An eye-opening (and sometimes blunt) conversation about one woman's discovery that not everything she learned about God and Sex growing up was necessarily what Jesus said, OR how things are done in the big city. We are grateful to Mattie Jo Cowsert, author of the new book God, Sex, and Rich People (Quoir Publishing), for taking the time to share her story with us, “shamelessly oversharing” about how she kept laughing and learning (even through some of the worst times) as her purity culture façade came undone and she found her authentic self underneath. Mattie Jo was a pastor's kid and proud purity ring wearer before she moved to New York City and experienced an unexpected worldview and identity implosion. Her popular blog God, Sex, and Rich People exposed the sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious realities of a young female EXvangelical navigating the diversity of the Big Apple, working for the 1%, and trying to have good sex without hating herself in the city that never sleeps (and never stops sleeping around). Mattie Jo has appeared on The New Evangelicals Podcast, IndoctriNation, and Talkin' Politics and Religion without Killin Each Other, among many others. She was invited by author Linda Kay Klein to join the Voices and Faces + Breakfree Together collaboration writing cohort on Religious Trauma, one of only ten individuals across the US to be selected.Find your guides at Quoir Academy! For decades, religion and the purity culture movement have told us a lot of things about female sexuality that are quite simply untrue. The problem is that the lies come packaged with many beautiful (albeit false) promises and are often served with good intentions, so it is difficult to recognize them as being lies until a lot of damage has already been done. These toxic teachings are wreaking havoc on Western culture, and because many of the ideologies are so familiar that they have become an ingrained part of our subconscious, the influence often goes far beyond what we realize. In this episode, Char, Josh, and Liv are joined by Linda Kay Klein, author of the book Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free. They talk about the common threads we all experience as a repercussion of these damaging beliefs, and share some of the ways they and others are healing from religious trauma to embody the fullness of their whole selves, including their sexuality. 16 years ago, Linda Kay Klein embarked on a storytelling journey that would change her life (and the lives of many others). In her 2018 book Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free, Linda captures the experiences of hundreds of women, herself included, who grew up within and confronted the consequences of the Evangelical purity culture movement in the 90s and early 2000s. Through Pure and her nonprofit, Break Free Together, Linda has created numerous spaces to bring folks together to share their stories about repression, bravery, and ultimately freedom. We are thrilled to have her as a podcast guest! Freedom comes in expected and unexpected ways. For instance, in this episode, learn how shrimp tails and boxes drawn on a dorm room wall were formative experiences that helped Linda access the bravery to tell the story that she was so afraid to share. “The great thing about doing something that you're really, really afraid of is the feeling when you survive.” Linda, Jeremiah, and Julia also discuss: What makes purity culture particularly appealing and damaging to adolescents (10:00): At a time in which youth are particularly vulnerable, leaders within the purity culture movement combine language of belonging and intense emotionality to create a culture of conformity. Linda describes, “When I left Evangelicalism, I had to contend with how damaging it was. I went in with a pretty good sense of myself and the world.” Sadly, the confines of purity culture had long-lasting, devastating consequences. The grief and anger that accompanied the writing process (21:30): Initially, Linda was hopeful when she met other women who could relate to her story. “But then, when the numbers started to add up, and it became clear that this was a lot of people who are hurting, that became something to grieve over time.” Additionally, the systemic coverup of overt and covert sexual abuse in churches and the ensuing silencing of survivors showed that the people who were supposed to protect a generation of women had failed to keep them safe. The confusion in finding your freedom (30:00): As a sexual health coach, Linda's clients often want to dive right into “fixing” sexual problems. Linda wisely takes a step back and asks people to explore simpler decisions. After all, purity culture's rigid binary system increases the anxiety around the decision-making process. Identifying what you want sexually is really challenging when you're not even sure how to decide what you want for dinner. What it's like to have relationships with people who are “worried” about you (42:00): When a person leaves Evangelicalism, those within the community tend to worry about your wellbeing, and even your salvation. Linda describes her experiences of navigating this, and Jeremiah and Julia introduce a potential support group: Moms of Millenials Straying from the Church. How motherhood impacts sexuality (58:00): Linda describes how she talks about sexuality with her 19-year-old stepdaughter differently than she experienced in the church, and how parenting a newborn can introduce a new type of intimacy within the couple and family relationships. Wherever you are in your journey toward sexual freedom, we hope that you can find comfort and healing in the power of telling and sharing stories. Let's heal together!

Are you aware that we are tragically shaming an entire generation of young women, teenagers, in our churches and youth groups. If they have had sex (whatever we mean by that, or our girls thinks it means), they are stigmas in the eyes of God and bad. Linda Kay Klein, author of "Pure", describes it this way, "The purity message is not about sex. Rather, it is about us: who we are, who we are expected to be, and who it is said we will become if we fail to meet those expectations. This is the language of shame.” The Song of Songs pushes against the consequences of such a message. There is a powerful love that can begin to heal the shame. There is a God who truly does love the unlovable, who loves the shamed, even the impure. We can show such a beat-up woman how to enter that embrace—as she is. Support The Show: https://www.gospelrant.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Julia and Jeremiah are sex therapists who work often with people who were raised in high control religious environments. They are also the hosts of the podcast Sexvangelicals.  We are grateful to welcome occasional co-host Ken Best for this episode and the next as the conversation went so well that we split it into two episodes.  We talk about common assumptions around sexuality in church culture. We consider what the term “value-based” means. We unpack some of the potential damage from various fundamentalist (both religious and otherwise) frameworks of sexual health.  It was an enjoyable, honest and open conversation. Given that the topic is sex you will likely hear things that upset or offend you, no matter where you are on the spectrum of religious/non-religious. After all, sex therapy is unafraid to delve into some topics and questions that are often left unaddressed. Linda Kay Klein (who is interviewed by her husband, Jimmy). Linda is something of a trailblazer. She's the best selling author of Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free. She has a lot of wisdom to offer and among other things in this video, I think she gives women permission to be themselves, to begin to define sexuality on their own terms, and to name the dis-health of the evangelical purity culture. Yes, it's challenging, but that's not to say that staying with the "tenants" of the purity culture isn't messy either! Linda has spoken around the world from the TEDx stage to The Apollo's Women of the World Festival. Her work has been featured by the New York Times, NPR, CBS, NBC, Elle Magazine, and 150 other outlets. Learn more at lindakayklein.com

In Linda's book Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement that Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free, she discusses what it was like as an Evangelical girl growing up in purity culture and the effect it had on her sexuality. The book also highlights the countless other women who she interviewed nationwide on the same topic. Whenever I do workshops within a church community, I recommend this excellent book which mirrors so many stories of women who grew up in religious communities in the 90s. In this podcast, we discuss her work as the founder and president of the nonprofit, Break Free Together and her work as a personal coach dedicated to helping people release shame and claim their whole selves.  She is changing lives and I am so happy to have spent our time together.   Linda's work was born out of her 15 years of research on religious trauma around sex and gender, documented in her award-winning book. Linda's work has been featured by CBS, NBC, NPR (her interview with Fresh Air's Terry Gross having been named one of the top ten of the year), and over 150 other outlets, and she has been highlighted on the TEDx stage, and at The Apollo's Women of the World Festival, the 92Y SHE Summit, and over 100 other venues.   Linda is also teaching faculty at Claremont Lincoln University and consults with organizations and individuals committed to doing good. Previously, she was the founding director of Echoing Green's multi-award-winning Work on Purpose program. The program's leadership development curriculum on how to find and follow your purpose was adopted by over 200 colleges/universities, nonprofits and corporations and has impacted tens of thousands of emerging professionals. Prior to this, she led Moving Millions, propelling what was then a $181-million campaign for large-scale investment in women and girls into the global community of 100+ donor-activists committed that it is today, and held other roles within academia and the women's funding movement.   Linda has contributed to several publications, and authored two successful curricula and training programs. She was awarded the NYU Reynolds Fellowship in Social Entrepreneurship for her work on religiously-rooted sexual shame in 2006. She later became a judge for the Forbes 30 Under 30 faith-based initiative, and the Echoing Green, AshokaU, and NYU Reynolds social entrepreneurship fellowship competitions. She is chair of the Board for the Forum for Theological Exploration board, and sits on the advisory boards of Feminist.com's Our Inner Lives initiative and New York University's Of Many Institute for Multifaith Leadership.   Linda holds an interdisciplinary Masters degree in gender studies, religious studies, oral history, nonfiction writing, and art as social change from NYU and is a trained Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education facilitator. A Midwesterner at heart, Linda lives in New York City with her family. She is the wife of a writer and social change agent who inspires her every day, and the “bonus mom” to a very cool teenager.   Learn more about Linda at Break Free Together and follow her on Instagram.

For many of us raised in the Evangelical tradition, we're familiar with what the term "purity culture" means on the surface: teaching children to save their first time having sex until they're married to that one person with whom God had always intended them to be. However, as time went by and the scars began to manifest, we realized what it entailed deeper down: sexual shame, sexual silence, and social and structural hierarchies that overwhelmingly subjugated and victimized young women. In her book, Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement that Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free, Linda Kay Klein interviewed a number of women over a 12-year period who were raised in the purity culture movement to get intimate perspectives on the environments that foster it, the damage that comes from it, and ultimately, the healing that can begin when separating from it. Interviewers: Jim Rohner and Jonathan Williams ABOUT LINDA KAY KLEIN Linda Kay Klein is an author, speaker, teaching faculty at Claremont Lincoln University and the President and Founder of Break Free Together, a not-for-profit that uses story exchange to help people release shame and claim their whole selves. Raised in purity culture, she's made it her mission to coach and consult with both people who experience the PTSD-like symptoms that have arisen from purity culture and organizations who are striving to establish a greater good.

Klein has been advocating for change in the realm of the American Evangelical Christian Church for over a decade. She was taught that a women's sexuality is viewed as shameful in the eyes of the church. Conversations with other young women coping with these same identity issues facilitated her own healing and lead her to write this book. Kathryn also interviews Global Grassroots president Gretchen Ki Steidle, author of “Leading from Within: Conscious Social Change and Mindfulness for Social Innovation”.
