Michael is a clinically-based athletic trainer with over 30 years of experience in rehabilitation and performance training. He is the owner and clinician at “Integrative Rehab Training” which provides rehabilitation, training services, consulting and educational programming based out of Cumberland, Maine. He is on Clinical Adjunct Faculty at the University of New England, is a licensed Physical Therapy Assistant, and is a Certified Clinician through the Postural Restoration Institute®. He has provided consultation, treatment and/or presentations to numerous professional athletes and teams, universities, professional associations, and other national and international organizations. He is an internationally recognized speaker on topics related to sports medicine, rehabilitation, training and performance and has been published in numerous professional and informational capacities. In this episode, Michael shares his inside out view on the human system. He talks about how we develop in utero as 99% fluid and explains his view of the body as a hydro-bio-dynamic system. He uses the concept of flow to create an image to his clients about what he is trying to help them achieve. He explains his view of suction within the body using an analogy of stepping in mud. “If you take a step and you step in mud, and it's dense mud and you stand in it for a period of time and you go to pull your foot out, it's holding you hostage, really sucking you down. If you step in it and move quickly or it's too fluid, then your body is just able to move out of it easily.” He explains how this works in the diaphragm and uses his body to animate this concept of turning around his internal structures. This is definitely one you may want to watch on YouTube. He explains how this model applies to strength training when we need to develop power and have more compression but we also need to decompress. He explains the role of the connective tissue / fascia and what happens when the tissues aren't fluid. What does this look like from a more traditional view of movement and pathology and how can this change the resting position of our joints. He talks about how society pushes messages of stability and how he wants his clients to feel safe with instability. He wants them to be able to wobble, not brace for optimal recovery. He explains his viewpoint of asymmetry and gives a great overview of the internal dynamics of our organs and the turn or procession that happens, which creates a leftward spin and opening, and right side bias. He discusses the left and right side of the brain in controlling these dynamics. He gives one of the best analogies I've ever heard for understand movement from the inside out. He describes our bodies as a snow globe and how we need to get the stuff inside of us to shake up so it can settle and redistribute better vs. having all of the stuff settled to the bottom or towards one side for long periods, usually our right side. He explains why senses are so important to our nervous system and how our current society can make us less focused on the present because of the over stimulation or focus on past and present. He explains how our brain is impacted. I ask Mike as a movement professional, where should we start, autonomics or somato-sensory? He explains how coaching and therapy is an art and how he has zero expectations and what that means to him and his patients. He says, “When the student is ready, the master becomes clearer”. I ask Mike what his thoughts are on pursuing more education so that we have tools to handle some of these 21st century problems, like rises in dysautonomia and how he talks to clients with potential trauma in a way that creates dialogue. If you are a movement professional this is a must listen! We bring things full circle with a bit of a deep dive into the emotional side of us and then Mike talks about the power of breath work and finding presence in your everyday. Mike gives 2 great pieces of advice for how to start using and tapping into some of these concepts for movement professionals and for anyone wanting to move and feel better. Again, you might want to watch this live on you tube so you can see what he is demonstrating. House Republicans killed a bill that would require each Virginia public elementary and secondary school board to provide free breakfast and lunch to students in a 5-3 party-line vote. The bill, HB 1967, introduced by Del. Michael Mullin, D-Newport News, was reviewed during the Pre-K-12 Education Subcommittee meeting Tuesday. The bill would have required every school board in Virginia to participate in federally assisted school meal programs. This follows the recent expiration of pandemic program waivers that provided free school meals across the country. These programs include The National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program and Community Eligibility Provision, both administered by the U.S....Article LinkSupport the show

In the 20th episode of the Postural Restoration Podcast I am joined by Michael Mullin to discuss his journey of applying the science of Postural Restoration concepts over the course of nearly two decades. Michael currently practices as a clinical Athletic Trainer through Integrative Rehab Training LLC in Portland Maine. Michael has been involved in various sport settings from early on in his career which eventually led him to use this experience in a more clinical setting while integrating multiple methods of rehabilitation strategies into one model. In this episode Michael discusses some of the differences associated with the management of a wide-ranging client base, and how he relies on various strategies to meet each client at their individual level. Although each of these individual clients are unique in their own compensation patterns and movement dysfunction, we discuss how many of them can be addressed through the same lens of respiration by setting a strong foundation for the appreciation of breathing mechanics.Michael discusses his early interest in education and seeking answers to questions that at the time were not being addressed. After discovering Ron Hruska’s work through an article titled “Hamstring injuries require triplanar assessment” he took his first PRI course in 2002 and began searching for other like-minded clinicians willing to ask and seek answers to some of these same questions. Through his course history with the institute Michael continued to grow along side it while discovering others who also shared his passion for integration and continued education. Michael became Postural Restoration Certified as part of the 2011 class, in which there are now over 200 certified clinicians throughout the world.Since then Michael has built his practice of Integrative Rehab Training LLC offering his skill set to a wide-ranging clientele. Michael has worked with all ends of the human spectrum, including dancers, skiers, singers, and all levels of athletes with various other sports. Throughout the various settings in his career, Michael has had the opportunity to host several PRI courses and continues to integrate with multiple organizations and models. He has furthered his knowledge and understanding of his truly multidisciplinary approach through these opportunities and through teaching these concepts to others. He has consulted and spoken through various professional organizations including many national and international Perform Better summits, private in services and on a daily basis with his clients. Michael is passionate about sharing his experiences with others as he aims to help them avoid any mistakes he himself has learned from throughout his career. This passion has continued to inspire others and has even led to his son Mitchell earning his own degree in Athletic Training as he hopes to continue to grow and practice alongside his dad.

This week we have another great episode to help you train smarter for your next OCR.  In this episode, I give you my tip of the week on how my wife figured out a simple trick to make your next barbed wire crawl alittle more pleasant. SGX Coach Brad Sims is on to give a race recap to the Goliathon Race held last month.  This is an incredibly descriptive summary of all 12 of the obstacles that were in the race.  This sounds like a fun race if you are on the East coast.  There will be another one coming up this fall you can sign up for. In our research review, I discuss inspiratory muscle training.  This unique resisted breathing training has been shown to lead to a variety of performance enhancements.  In this study we see how IMT may improve running performance when performed daily and as part of your warm up routine. This week coach's interview, we have on Michael Mullin from Integrated Fitness Training.  I had the please of hosting a workshop earlier this year, where Michael provided incredibly useful and eye opening information and training/rehab strategies.  The focus of this training was on breathing, but we also got into many applicable training principles. In this interview he explains why breathing should not be overlooked and how it is the foundation of everything we do.  He discusses the different physiological, biochemical, and postural effects of proper and improper breathing and simple ways you can incorporate breathing into your training.  While many focus on exhaling during exertion, we talk about all of the other breathing strategies that you need to consider. We get into why Michael doesn't like the term posture and how positioning is the key.  We discuss positioning and breathing during many common exercises like squatting and pull ups.  Even how many posture cues you have heard, may be making your posture even worse.  We also talk about technique for running and even monkey bars, to maximize performance and to keep you moving more efficiently. All this and much more in this weeks episode.   Complete Show Notes:  www.ocrunderground.com/episode-37
