Today's is a special episode focusing on sibling dynamics. We take a break from our typical therapy sessions to talk to Leslie's 34-year-old twins, Dale and Carrie. Together they share in an open and honest conversation the challenges of being themselves and being in relationship with each other. Dale had intense emotions and challenging behaviors as a kid, and doesn't understand how Carrie didn't hate her, or at the very least resent her. Carrie was easy going and flexible, and she grew up wondering if there was something wrong with her. In this dialogue we look at how complex sibling relationships can be. What happens when one sibling has higher needs than the other? How do parents balance the needs of each child when helping one can actually hurt the other? Hear what Dale and Carrie reveal about the evolution of their relationship not just as siblings, but as twins, from childhood to adulthood.About our guests: Dale Rubury is excited to be back on Is My Child A Monster? as she was a producer and special guest in Season 1. After graduating from college with a degree in Zoology, Dale moved to warmer climates to pursue a career with animals. She worked at the largest primate sanctuary in North America for 7 years before moving on to a different career path. For the past few years, she has been in the world of construction where she was building yurts and working for Habitat for Humanity. Dale is currently enrolled in a graduate program to become a Physical Therapy Assistant. Dale is proud to say that she has a healthy relationship with her anxiety.  Carrie's passion for exploring humanity, in all its messiness and wonder, has driven her career. Her career has led her across the globe, working in Latin America and Africa, and across various industries, from public relations and restaurants to leadership development and healthcare. Carrie continued to follow her curiosity about how people change and grow into graduate school to earn her MSW. Carrie is currently working as a clinical social worker in a community practice in upstate New York. She lives with her husband and dog, Lou. Outside of work, she is likely cooking with friends or adventuring in some wilderness. Resources:Leslie's Handout on The Need to Feel Significant Leslei's Handout on The Need to Feel a Sense of BelongingIs My Child a Monster?  S1 Ep 14 The Apology Episode with Special Guest Dale RuburyLeslie's video of the Orchestra Metaphor which teaches us  to respect people for who they areLeslie-ism: All children need to feel like unique individuals and also need to feel like they belong.Timestamps:1:53 The metaphor of a mobile: a family systems perspective where all family members impact each other 10:17 For the low needs child you can explain that “It's hard being [the sibling with anxiety], and it's hard being you”12:26 Holding the dialectic dilemma: “I love her and am also angry at her”16:30 The empathy issue for children - when a child is young and struggling, they may not be able to understand the other person's perspective 17:47 Give the problem back to the child who is being mean  It's Dale's problem, not Carrie'sGive compassion to the child who is struggling in the moment Connect to the child who is the “victim”

In this episode of the Health Care Education Transformation podcast, cohost Sean Bagbey interviews Lisa Stejskal, a PTA educator with extensive experience in the field. They discuss the importance of connecting PTA educators across the country and the creation of teaching and networking communities. These communities provide a platform for PTA educators to collaborate, share ideas, and stimulate innovation in specific areas of interest. Lisa shares the success of these communities and the impact they have had on educators, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. They also discuss the need for stronger connections between DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) and PTA educators and the value of bridging the gap between the two professions.Key Takeaways:- Teaching and networking communities for PTA educators provide valuable opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and innovation.- These communities help address the limited support and mentorship available to PTA educators, especially in programs with only two full-time faculty members.- The communities have been well-received, with participants forming connections, exchanging information, and providing support to each other.- The communities have also led to increased participation in in-person events and engagement with other resources, such as the PTA Educator Facebook page.- Adjunct PTA educators can benefit from joining these communities, as it broadens their perspectives, helps them navigate academia, and fosters connections with other educators.Find out more at the following resources:https://www.facebook.com/APTAAcademyofEducationIf you are taking the NPTE or are teaching those about to take the NPTE, visit the NPTE FInal Frontier at www.NPTEFF.com and use code "HET" for 10% off all purchases at the website...and BREAKING NEWS!!!! This episode is a change in our typical format where parents share their struggles and challenges in therapy sessions recorded live.  This is a conversation between Leslie and her daughter, Dale. It focuses on the topic of raising a responsible child versus an obedient child.  We all want children who listen to us. But it's not as simple as telling our children what to do, and expecting them to do it. In today's conversation, Leslie will help us define the difference between these two ideas. Dale and Leslie explore these ideas in her childhood and reflect on the value of these principles in her adult lifeDale Rubury is Leslie's daughter, a producer of this podcast, and today's guest. After graduating from college with a degree in Zoology, Dale moved to warmer climates to pursue a career with animals. Michael is a clinically-based athletic trainer with over 30 years of experience in rehabilitation and performance training. He is on Clinical Adjunct Faculty at the University of New England, is a licensed Physical Therapy Assistant, and is a Certified Clinician through the Postural Restoration Institute®. He has provided consultation, treatment and/or presentations to numerous professional athletes and teams, universities, professional associations, and other national and international organizations. He is an internationally recognized speaker on topics related to sports medicine, rehabilitation, training and performance and has been published in numerous professional and informational capacities. In this episode, Michael shares his inside out view on the human system. He talks about how we develop in utero as 99% fluid and explains his view of the body as a hydro-bio-dynamic system. He uses the concept of flow to create an image to his clients about what he is trying to help them achieve. He explains his view of suction within the body using an analogy of stepping in mud. “If you take a step and you step in mud, and it's dense mud and you stand in it for a period of time and you go to pull your foot out, it's holding you hostage, really sucking you down. If you step in it and move quickly or it's too fluid, then your body is just able to move out of it easily.” He explains how this works in the diaphragm and uses his body to animate this concept of turning around his internal structures. This is definitely one you may want to watch on YouTube. He explains how this model applies to strength training when we need to develop power and have more compression but we also need to decompress. He explains the role of the connective tissue / fascia and what happens when the tissues aren't fluid. What does this look like from a more traditional view of movement and pathology and how can this change the resting position of our joints. He talks about how society pushes messages of stability and how he wants his clients to feel safe with instability. He wants them to be able to wobble, not brace for optimal recovery. He explains his viewpoint of asymmetry and gives a great overview of the internal dynamics of our organs and the turn or procession that happens, which creates a leftward spin and opening, and right side bias. He discusses the left and right side of the brain in controlling these dynamics. He gives one of the best analogies I've ever heard for understand movement from the inside out. He describes our bodies as a snow globe and how we need to get the stuff inside of us to shake up so it can settle and redistribute better vs. having all of the stuff settled to the bottom or towards one side for long periods, usually our right side. He explains why senses are so important to our nervous system and how our current society can make us less focused on the present because of the over stimulation or focus on past and present. He explains how our brain is impacted. I ask Mike as a movement professional, where should we start, autonomics or somato-sensory? He explains how coaching and therapy is an art and how he has zero expectations and what that means to him and his patients. He says, “When the student is ready, the master becomes clearer”. I ask Mike what his thoughts are on pursuing more education so that we have tools to handle some of these 21st century problems, like rises in dysautonomia and how he talks to clients with potential trauma in a way that creates dialogue. If you are a movement professional this is a must listen! We bring things full circle with a bit of a deep dive into the emotional side of us and then Mike talks about the power of breath work and finding presence in your everyday. Mike gives 2 great pieces of advice for how to start using and tapping into some of these concepts for movement professionals and for anyone wanting to move and feel better. Thanks to my friend, my physical therapist, and our guest on this episode I'm finding out that so many of my back problems  could be stemming from poor pregnancy and c-section recovery.  If you've given birth, intend to, or know someone  who will be, listen up because the way you take care of your body AFTER pregnancy can have LONG LASTING effects and imbalances that may be causing you a lot of trouble now.  But don't despair, imbalances can be fixed and damage can be repaired with patient, consistent work.   Our guest today is Sarah Nichols, who was a licensed Physical Therapy Assistant for 13 years and has now made it her mission to educate and assist women in getting thier bodies back.  She loves to teach about improving your foundational strength, and getting to the root cause of physical problems and pain instead of just managing symptoms.  She has a genuine desire to help woman during pregnancy and post becasue, as she says, we're not taught how to protect our bodies and get our pelvis strong again which causes future problems in the lower back, hips and knees.  Her favorite body part to work with is the spine because that is usually where our issues start, that's certainly the case for me!    And just a quick update - I've been working really hard on re-building my own foundational strength, and improving imbalances with Sarah.  Our consistent work has paid off and while I have back issues that will never go away, my functioning and mobility has greatly improved and I've started getting back into walking and lifting weights.  The knowledge I now have and the foundational strength I've gained will keep me on the right track and feeling good!  If you're struggling like I was, my best advice is find the RIGHT helpers, be consistent in your exercises and treatments, and give it enough time!   I hope this episode give you hope if you're struggling.  Your body is amazing and incredible abilites to heal itself if you give it the right help!    XOXO Tara   PS. Welcome back to The Stoop Sessions where we have casual conversations about ministry on the Baltimore stoop. In each episode, Joel, Stephanie, and Eric talk through different topics and occasionally bring on a friend. As the Stoop crew continues their focus on personal evangelism, we offer Eric's testimony as an example of how the Lord uses people, sometimes without their knowing, to lead another to Christ. In today's episode, Stephanie interviews Eric on how his cousin, CJ, shared the Gospel with him. Eric began attending a church after his daughter was born. Around the same time, CJ was coming to an understanding of the Gospel, reading, and talking about Jesus. CJ and Eric met weekly to read and talk. God used these meetings to bring clarity and faith. Listen and be encouraged to take the Gospel to your own friend's and family, leading them to know Jesus. Stephanie Greer is a Gospel Worker funded through ONE HOPE serving with The Garden Church. Welcome back to The Stoop Sessions where we have casual conversations about ministry on the Baltimore stoop. In each episode, Joel, Stephanie, and Eric talk through different topics and occasionally bring on a friend. This episode begins a conversation on evangelism. We get it—life is busy, you have tried to share Jesus with those you know, it hasn't seemed to “work,” and you don't have time to develop new relationships. How can we possibly become better at personal evangelism when we're just trying to get through life? Additionally, many are discouraged because they feel they've never effectively shared the Gospel or seen someone become a believer. In today's episode, the team discusses their own challenges as they seek simple solutions. Not all hope is lost. We can become better evangelists as we develop new eyes to see, strengthen our own understanding of the Gospel, and learn to help individuals from one step to another as they explore the faith. Join us as we consider the topic of personal evangelism: how to build strategic relationships, see opportunities we often miss, take the next step with an unbeliever, and share the Gospel with the lost. Welcome back to The Stoop Sessions where we have casual conversations about ministry on the Baltimore stoop. In each episode, Joel, Stephanie, and Eric talk through different topics and occasionally bring on a friend. This episode rounds out a 3-part conversation on the topic of wealth. As the crew has discussed, the topic of wealth is one that affects everyone, whether rich or poor. Money is needed for physical survival. So it matters. And, at the same time, greed isn't limited to the wealthy. While wealth can certainly be a blessing from God, the Bible doesn't emphasize the goodness of wealth but rather the dangers of wealth. While it's good to pursue money to meet our needs, Biblically we should not good to set our eyes on money. In this third part, we call Christians to something greater than acquiring material things and building barns. Whether poor, middle class, or wealth, our goal must be living for the glory of God.
