Nicole Rodriguez always knew she wanted to pursue strength and conditioning, but the extent of her journey — spanning 44 countries and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games — is nothing short of inspiring. During her time at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, Rodriguez recognized the value of experience and environment, later joining the EXOS International Program to coach globally. Eager to test her skills and help standardize coaching education, she sought out developing countries to advance their sport infrastructure. Rodriguez outlines key differences between U.S. and European approaches: while the U.S. excels in strength methodology, Europe enhances sport-specific application through tactical periodization. Additionally, she highlights Europe’s emphasis on rehabilitation and an “inverse relationship” between time in the weight room versus pitch-side with sport coaches. Rodriguez also describes her work with Poland’s Ministry of Sport and Tourism to pursue NSCA Global Chapter status, aligning with her passion for improving strength and conditioning education and implementation worldwide. It's being able to adapt and form a needs analysis and build a program for any sport or activity based on demands, recognizing key aspects of an activity or a job or a sport or a position that give you windows of trainability to help that athlete or person.” 21:23 “I always believe in Harry Truman's word that you can be successful in life without getting the credit. And there's a lot of things that we have to do in the industry where we're just do not get any credit. And it's just part of the job. But we try to use it as a positive way of working together.” 31:30 “Those are the two things that I always work to remember is, hey, keep the peace in the environments that I work in because they are high-stress environments. But also, this concept of you don't always have to be super bubbly and always smiling. It's helpful. It's very helpful if you have that ability to stay positive through the thick of the scenario. But sometimes it doesn't always need to come from positivity but more of this idea of staying neutral, yeah, so you can make the next best decision.” 35:22
The knot in your stomach. That flush of unease when you know you've fallen short of your own standards. The only way to truly adapt and evolve is through real vulnerability—not the gentle, polished kind from TED talks, but the raw honesty that forces you to confront hard truths about yourself. This isn't about stepping out of your comfort zone in a clichéd way; it's about embracing the discomfort and going to war until you're fully transformed. Today's guest, Kyle Holland, knows a thing or two about facing challenges head-on. As an Exercise Physiologist with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, he's worked in some of the most demanding environments and spent 10 years with the 160th SOAR(A), a Special Operations Unit in the Army. Kyle has also trained professional athletes and MMA fighters at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning and worked with both the University of Iowa and Louisville's football programs. A devoted husband and father of three, Kyle brings a grounded perspective to every topic he tackles. In this episode, Brett and Kyle dive into real talk on topics including: Taking accountability for your actions when you're in the wrong How to turn your setbacks into springboards for grow with grace Strategies to avoid being cut by the double-edged sword of strengths and weaknesses Why politics gets us so riled up *Brett reveals a major life change and how he's choosing to respond We want to thank Kyle for joining us! Strength and conditioning for young pro athletes isn't easy, but because they're bouncy and resilient, you can experiment more to find a line of best fit. But what about when you're training older athletes aged 35 and up, either in the general population or a pro sports setting? That's the question legendary strength coach answers in this podcast. In this part 2, he and former Lakers S&C coach Tim DiFrancesco discuss:Why you should make a “who's smarter than me?” list and then seek those people out to learn from them How he approached coaching veteran athletes with the Boston Red SoxWhy the most important question to ask is “Does this hurt” and any answer other than “no” means “yes”What the number one reason is for older athletes getting hurt and how to avoid itWhy over-valuing your own knowledge leads to under-networking Which exercises he typically avoids with veteran athletesWhy a coach needs to be an effective face reader and active listenerHow being a bouncer and bartender gave him the soft skills needed for coachingWhich coaches and PTs he sought out for mentoring and who he recommends todayRead Mike's new book, Designing Strength Training Programs and Facilities (2nd edition), check out his articles at strengthcoach.com, and follow him at @mboyle1959 on Twitter and @michael_boyle1959 on Instagram

Not all strength training is the same; lifting a barbell is different than swinging a kettlebell and using a set of dumbbells provides a completely different workout than using a machine. To make sure that you are doing the best exercises and workouts for your goals, you should first have an understanding of how the human body is designed to move and the different ways that it can be challenged with exercise. Kevin Carr is a Boston-based performance coach, educator, massage therapist, author and a co-creator of the Functional Strength Coach Certification that teaches how to design strength-training programs for the way the body is designed to move. Coach Carr works with Coach Mike Boyle, the founder of Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, a facility that helps individuals from professional athletes to septuagenarian grandmothers improve their ability to perform their favorite activities (Coach Boyle has helped the Boston Red Sox and Boston University Men's Hockey win the World Series and National Championship, so they know what they're doing) and that has been recognized by Men's Health as one of the top gyms in the U.S. Kevin is also the co-author of Functional Strength Training Anatomy, a book that explains how to strengthen your body by using the muscle the way they are designed to work. On this episode, Kevin talks about the difference between bodybuilding and performance training and why you should be doing the latter instead of the former. In addition, he shares how some of your muscles actually function (not the way you think) and the types of exercises that you should be doing to help them become stronger so that you can perform your best. It's an enlivening talk with Kevin Carr and Mary Kate Feit who are the authors of the book, Functional Training Anatomy. Kevin is a strength and conditioning coach and manager at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (MBSC) while Mary Kate is an assistant professor of strength and conditioning in the School of Physical Education, Performance, and Sport Leadership at Springfield College. First off, I ask them what pushed them to write the book and how it goes when it comes to dividing their duties in filling in information since they are both working on it. Kevin also mentions the people who are involved in making them come up with creating this medium to serve as a guide to active people. Our conversation flows within the content of their book that also gives me more understanding when it comes to doing the proper training and performing different movements. As for movements, Kevin answers my question if he will be doing a video series to show the correct posture and movements that are demonstrated in their book. Kevin and Mary Kate openly share their story about how their respective clients improved a lot while following their training programs. Mary Kate mentions as well how she gives programs to the people who want them. Since they also encounter people who have been injured due to training, Kevin tells me what they specifically do for them, which is something most people will truly admire to hear from him. There's more to learn from them so watch this full interview and find out their straightforward but uplifting answers to our last question. Want to connect with Kevin and Mary Kate? On Episode 27, we are joined by all around fitness and wellness guru, Kevin Carr. A degree in kinesiology, a certified massage therapist, strength coach, and personal trainer, and so much more. Talking briefly on his love for lifting and training taking off during high school level sports, Kevin gets right into where his passions lie now. Wearing many hats throughout each and every day, we are fortunate to get into his thoughts, practices, and experiences in the fitness world. Important Notes: 00:02 - Kevin found his love for athletics through a few different instances. One, like several others in this field, suffering an injury in high school heavily influenced him to pursue exercise science. 00:05 - Kevin himself, interned very early on in his college career, and because of that the internship process has played a very vital role in his business. It shows how someone works, their personality, and that they care, as it is essentially a three month interview process. 00:12 - Movement As Medicine, the therapy end of a joint venture with Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning. Carr and others working towards providing manual therapy to help people move and feel better. 00:14 - There is a gray area between strength training and physical therapy, and with people coming in and out of his office, he finds that many can’t deal with issues pertaining to capacity. 00:19 - Instrumental or manual therapy is neurological in nature. Opposed to the common misconceptions of those who use terminology to describe that the muscle makes up is instantly changed. There is a neurological window of opportunity when coming into the office. 00:21 - Condition your body in therapy so that the progress sticks during actual conditioning. 00:22 - The traditional physical therapy model is passive. With an insurance based model there is no skin in the game, in terns of investment. 00:25 - There is always variability in the way that people move. Your body is very good in finding solutions whether they are efficient or not. 00:31 - As humans we are wired to function unilaterally, so our training should represent that as best as possible. 00:42 - The adaptions you have from your sport, is probably best for your sport. 00:47 - Remote coaching has its place, but in-person training is where those corrections can truly be made to their fullest potential and understanding. 00:55 - Defend your program. No one should go into a program before understanding the desired outcome for that training choice. Defend your program.

For this weeks episode I had the opportunity to speak with someone who has a position that any Canadian Strength and Conditioning Coach would love. He is the strength and conditioning coordinator for the San Jose Sharks, Mike Potenza. We discuss how he and his team evaluate athletes and track workload in order to optimize performance within season and maximize adaptations during the off-season. Mike is currently in his 15th season as the San Jose Sharks Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. He's responsible for the team's overall strength and conditioning programs -- including the creation of individualized postseason workout programs and assistance in the rehabilitation efforts for all injured players. Before coming to San Jose, Potenza served as the strength and conditioning coach for the University of Wisconsin men's and women's hockey teams, both of which were 2006 NCAA National Champions. There, he worked with former Sharks center Joe Pavelski. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Exercise Science from Springfield College and Master's degree in Human Movement Science from Boston University. Potenza completed an assortment of strength and conditioning coaching and internship experiences before his time at Wisconsin. At the University of Miami (Fla.), he served as a weight training, speed and post-workout coach for the perennial nationally-ranked Hurricanes football team. While earning his master's, Potenza instructed professional, amateur and collegiate athletes at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning Mike has been involved in the development of some amazing products, including Optimizing Adaptation and Performance, which he co-created with Kevin Neeld and James Lavalle. He is also the president of the Strength and Conditioning Association of Professional Hockey and part of a group that put together Pro Hockey Strength dot com. A site that houses the best of the best from Strength and Conditioning Coaches across the NHL and AHL. Highly recommended if you train any level of hockey athlete. I've rambled on for long enough, so let's dive in.

Today we welcome coach Kevin Carr to the show to talk about the importance of coach/client relationships, movement quality, principles of programming, progressions and regressions, his work with hockey players and endurance athletes, and cognitive health. Kevin has worked at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning for 12 years as a strength coach, personal trainer, and as a manager. Additionally he is a manual therapist and runs a rehab clinic called Movement As Medicine along with four other coaches where they look to help MBSC clients bridge the gap back to training from rehabilitation. Finally, Kevin is also the founder and manager at Certified Functional Strength Coach alongside Mike Boyle and Brendan Rearick. We first get into Kevin’s background and how he got started at MBSC. At age 18, he was a self proclaimed 18 year old meathead working at a Gold’s Gym. At the time he was a CPT and was going to be going to school for Kinesiology, and it was through a member of the gym who had told him about an internship opportunity at Mike Boyle’s facility. Kevin applied, was accepted, and has been there ever since. Around 2014, Kevin and fellow MBSC coach Brendan Rearick had both gone through massage school and opened up their clinic Movement As Medicine within the walls of MBSC. Next, we talk about Kevin’s evolution as a coach from the time he first walked through the doors of MBSC to where he is at now. The first thing he learned was how to train people like athletes and put the emphasis on moving well as opposed to just crushing them with excess load or volume. Furthermore, he learned the importance of communication and how to build relationships with his clients, which flew in the face of what he thought coaching was about at the time. Kevin talks about the value of being personable with every member within the facility, regardless if they’re your client or not. While he is naturally more introverted, coaching has allowed him to develop his extroverted skills and he expects all of his coaches to follow suit and fit within the outgoing culture of the facility. We then transition into some training talk starting with principles of program design. The first thing they address at MBSC is that they don’t want people to be in pain, so they teach progressions and regressions so that clients can work around injuries. The first step of designing any program is the prep work intended to improve movement quality and having alternatives on hand for clients who need to make modifications. The next thing he looks at is basic locomotion (skipping, hopping, bounding) and power development while scaling to the individual. With the actual strength component of a program, he wants to address the fundamental movement patterns, both bilaterally and unilaterally while ensuring that clients are using the appropriate exercise, load, and volume. While the framework of the basic template doesn’t change much from person to person, Kevin still uses an individualized approach by regressing and progressing movements according to what the client is capable of doing. This starts by having an understanding of what is limiting the client along with basic principles of anatomy and biomechanics. Coaches need a keen eye for movement, which takes time in the trenches to develop. This leads into a discussion on exercise selection and not creating more complexity just for the sake of it. As a coach you need to remember that just because you might be bored of an exercise, doesn’t mean that your client is. The basics go a long way and most people will never reach the point of mastery. We switch gears and take a peek at the type of clients that Kevin works with most. While a broad array of people walk through the doors at MBSC, they have created a niche with hockey players and surprisingly to him, runners and endurance athletes. When talking about his work with endurance athletes, oftentimes they will come to him in...
This was a awesome interview with my friend CJ. He has been mentioned multiple times on the show from other people which just shows the respect that people have for him. He went on to work at MBSC, Malden Catholic High School, and now is currently the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Groton School. CJ has always had a passion for helping people and athletics and in a short period of time has already made his mark in the Strength and Conditioning Field.

If have not already done so, please head to the link below and make sure to download our podcast reflection sheets. They're absolutely free! https://artofcoaching.com/podcastreflections/ Imagine this; you wake up alone in a hospital. Every time you touch your skin, no matter how gently, you bruise. To the point, if you roll over wrong or you scratch an itch, or you rub your eye, you may wake up the next day with hundreds of bruises. Not only that, but you're also told by doctors and surgeons that you have a disease, an affliction that only one in a million people will ever get. How would you act? What goes through your mind? If you've ever spent time in a hospital, you know what that environment feels like. You know the smell. You know the sounds, and the footprints. You see the urgency of doctors and nurses, the beeps, the clangs, and the bangs. There's a deafening silence while you sit in your own head thinking, "where am I, and what's going to happen?". Everyone, our guest today has an extraordinary story, and everything I've just described is a part of it. Brendon Rearick came back and is in remission from a very rare condition called Aplastic anemia. I'm going to let him tell this story, but I encourage you to listen up. As with every episode, please understand that nothing in these podcast episodes is just for strength coaches. Nothing is for people in any vacuum type situation. The lessons we experience in our lives are the very things that shape our outcome and our profession and our personal lives. So take heed, listen, and write notes. There's a lot of great stuff coming your way on today's episode. Brendon's personal mission is to spread the positive by-products of coaching and movement as far as he can using strength and conditioning as his platform. With a degree in Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Brendon got his start at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (MBSC) in Woburn, MA. The growth-focused environment at MBSC motivated Brendon in a way he had never experienced. Over a few short years he progressed to become the Program Director and earned his massage therapy license. Soon thereafter, he started an education company with four co-workers – Certified Functional Strength Coach. In five years, CFSC has certified over 6,500 trainers in over 50 countries. Now a California resident, Brendon travels and coaches often for Certified Functional Strength Coach, and has recently become an active speaker at the Perform Better summit conferences. His next venture will be opening a gym Train Smarter and Harder with his wife Jenny in the beginning of 2020. With an inexhaustible drive to learn more, practice his craft, and be the best version of himself, Brendon dedicates his free time to continuing education, dancing with his 3-year old daughter, reading, writing, and enjoying the outdoors. In this podcast I am speaking to Coach & Manager at Mike Boyle Strength & Conditioning and Owner of Movement as Medicine, Kevin Carr. I really enjoyed this episode with Kevin as it built nicely on the back of the previous episode where I was interviewed by Brett Bartholomew. A lot of what Kevin and I discussed was like music to my ears as I think it's essential to hear of how a strength coach like him has built a really successful business and has diversified so well. As well as all the business development chat, there is also plenty of talk in there about how Kevin coaches a huge variety of populations and how his language, demonstrations and education differs. Exercise science is an oxymoron. Yes, there is tangible evidence that suggests how different types of exercise can influence the physiological systems of the human body. However, there are so many variables: the amount of weight used, the exercises performed, equipment used, the quality of nutrition or the amount of rest, that it can be really difficult to know exactly how your body will respond to an exercise program. Top personal trainers, strength coaches, researchers and educators will NEVER give you a definitive answer about how your body will respond to a workout and are ALWAYS learning how exercise effects the human body. The point is that NO ONE can tell you exactly how your body will react to any type of exercise, it will always take some trial-and-error to identify the most effective workouts for your needs. Mike Boyle is a first-generation strength coach, meaning he was in the first generation of professionals who were able to make a living as a conditioning coach working exclusively with athletes. Coach Boyle owns Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning outside of Boston, MA, besides helping multiple teams and athletes compete at the highest levels he is an educator and author who is well known for changing his mind or adjusting his coaching techniques when he realizes that he could be doing something in a different, better, more efficient way. On this episode of All About Fitness, Coach Boyle provides insights into how he stays on top of the constantly evolving field of exercise science and how he has adjusted his approach to programming over the course of his career. Today’s episode features the return of strength coach Mike Boyle. Mike is one of the foremost experts in the fields of Strength and Conditioning, Functional Training and general fitness. In 1996 Michael co-founded Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, one of the first for-profit strength and conditioning companies in the world. He is the author of “Functional Training for Sports”, “Advances in Functional Training for Sports”, and “New Functional Training for Sports”. Mike made huge waves in the industry when he put down a firm stance against bilateral barbell squatting, in favor of goblet squats and single leg work, which he spoke on in his first guest appearance. Although many doubters would arise, on last episode, Mike gave some very clear anecdotes on just how good of results you can get in standard NFL combine training KPI’s without using the “sacred cows” of a barbell back squat. For today’s episode, we pick back up where we left off, talking about the departure of standard powerlifting means in training athletes, now focusing particularly on posterior chain development. With the exit of the barbell deadlift, Mike has an array of exercises and movements that heavily tax the muscles of the glutes and hamstrings, and can do so to a greater degree than typical bilateral straight bar work. For today’s episode, we’ll cover the biggest differences between the old and new functional training books, why coaches tend to be afraid of the term “functional training”, the evolution of Mike’s sprint training based on the ideas of Tony Holler, developing the posterior chain effectively and safely, and finally, Mike’s 3 “Go-to” total body lifts for developing athletes Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: The biggest differences between the old and new functional training for sports books Why coaches tend to be afraid of the term “functional training” Potential drawbacks of doing only single leg work in the weightroom Michael’s utilization of flying 10 yard sprints in a small space Velocity based training, system loads and jump squats Means of developing posterior chain without using deadlifts and good-mornings Mike’s 3 go-to lifs for athletes Quotes “I don’t think people look to learn, I think people look to be right and people look to support what they are doing” “If someone can show me a better way, I’m going to go with the better way” “I think most people are loading too heavy when they try to do their contrast stuff (heavy hex-bar jumps), and tilt the risk reward” “The less you want your athletes to get hurt, the higher you should keep the reps…. I might never go under 5 reps working with professional athletes” “If you are looking at posterior chain, then it’s really down to getting good at the one-leg straight leg deadlift” “To me heavy sled work is like a posterior chain leg press, and everybody from an athletic standpoint, should be trying to push the heaviest sled they possibly can” “The limit of posterior chain strength is way higher than what we think” “We never deadlift with a bar, ever, because it makes no sense” “I just don’t know if there is much better bang for the buck than Olympic lifts” “Athletes gravitate towards athletic things (in the weightroom)” About Mike Boyle He currently spends his time lecturing, teaching, training and writing. In 1996 Michael co founded Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, one of the first for-profit strength and conditioning companies in the world. Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning exists for one reason: to provide performance enhancement training for athletes of all levels. Today’s guest is Robbie Bourke, host of the “All Things Strength and Wellness” podcast. Robbie is a Strength and Conditioning Coach, Neuromuscular and Physical Therapist, Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist, and Holistic Health and Wellness Practitioner based in Glasnevin, Dublin. In listening to Robbie’s podcast over the last year, I’m really amazed by the amount, and diversity of knowledge that he has in realms of not only sports performance, but also nutrition, physiology, psychology and more. It’s always been my own quest to be well rounded, so seeing another podcast host younger than myself with the knowledge that Robbie has is inspiring. In talking to Robbie recently, we both realized that we were both excited about learning more about the same training modality: isometrics. Although a method as old as time, Robbie and I both think that many coaches and athletes are missing out by not considering this method in their regimes. Additionally, in this podcast, Robbie covers ideas on high-low, or the “barbell method” of training (Taleb), individualizing factors in training, training the nervous system, and periodization and training residuals. It’s always great talking with Robbie, and this was a wonderful conversation on many training topics of interest that are often hot with debate. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Robbie’s background and education in the human performance industry Thoughts on isometric training for athletic performance in light of old and new ideologies The “barbell principle” of attacking training in general, and specific movements from both ends of the spectrum Individualization factors in performance training Thoughts on application of delayed training effects and periodization Quotes “We know that this neural component of being able to activate and recruit motor units is a huge part of increasing biological output in terms of strength and how much force we can produce” “Strength training and all the exercises and means of strength training are just means, they are just one way to do it” “If the brain feels the body cannot produce force because a joint is in a bad position, it will not allow you to produce force” “It’s a universal principle to attack training from both ends of the spectrum” “The speed continuum for track and field does not carry over to field-based athletes” “We train everything, but it’s an emphasis based model” “Training residuals are the holy grail of training, and they are so individual to the person” “Due to delayed training effects, it’s definitely still worth having a sequential order in your periodization” “The more neurological the sport is, the more training residuals might be less of a factor” About Robbie Bourke Robbie Bourke is a Strength and Conditioning Coach, Neuromuscular and Physical Therapist, Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist, and Holistic Health and Wellness Practitioner based in Glasnevin, Dublin. In December 2009 Robbie completed an internship at Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning (MBSC), Boston, MA, USA, under world renowned strength and conditioning coach, Mike Boyle. Robbie completed his Higher Diploma in Neuromuscular and Physical Therapy at the National Training Centre (NTC), Dublin in October 2011. Robbie has completed many other courses such as Reed Davis’ Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, and Dr Natasha Campbell McBride’s Gut and Psychology Syndrome certification, and many more in the fields of strength & conditioning, nutrition, functional medicine, rehabilitation, and holistic health and wellness. As a strength and conditioning coach Robbie specializes movement quality, linear and multi-directional speed development, power development, strength training, energy system development, body composition,
Today’s guest is strength and conditioning coach, Mike Boyle. Mike Boyle has the trifecta of being one of the most well-known, well-loved, and most-hated strength coaches, all at the same time. He is one of the foremost experts in the fields of Strength and Conditioning, Functional Training and general fitness. In 1996 Michael co-founded Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning, one of the first for-profit strength and conditioning companies in the world. He is the author of “Functional Training for Sports”, “Advances in Functional Training for Sports”, and “New Functional Training for Sports”. Mike Boyle is incredibly popular for his work in training revolving around the needs of the athlete, but has become incredibly unpopular due to his dis-use of the bilateral barbell squat exercise. Many people are familiar with the fact that Mike doesn’t bilateral barbell squat his athletes, but most people will make a decision right there as to not look into how and why Mike got to this point, and continue doing everything they have been doing, as normal. Additionally, they don’t look at the results that Mike can get in athletes in markers such as vertical jump, without utilizing heavy compressive barbell work. Even if you are the vast majority of coaches who bilateral barbell squat your athletes (myself included), there is a lot of great thought processes and stories in this podcast with a legend in our field that will make you really, truly think about every piece you have in your training system, and if you might be able to get the same, or better results without it. For today’s episode, Mike covers his mentors and influencers in the field, the long-term process by which he stopped utilizing barbell squatting, performance advantages of deadlifts vs. squats, the results Mike can get in performance markers without squatting, and even Mike’s current personal workouts. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Mike’s mentors and influencers that had a big impact on his early years as a strength coach The long-term process by which Mike stopped utilizing back squats with athletes Concepts on the bilateral deficit, and the neurological inefficiency of bilateral movement Why many coaches are simply looking for agreement rather than learning Mike Boyle’s personal workout schedule Questions on what results you can get in speed and power measurements such as vertical jump in athletes with no squatting Squats, deadlifts, and spinal compression Quotes “The people that think, and question, and tend to speak their mind tend to be unpopular” “I can remember being told that your back should hurt for 4-5 days after a good squat or deadlift workout” “Having an athletic training background, you start to look at (10-20% of athletes with active back pain) and at least having those head scratching moments of, “hey this might not be the right way to go”” “It took about 20 years to get to this “OK we’re not doing this any more” point (on barbell squatting athletes)” “I’m so not married to any concept, I’m only married to the idea of best practices, I want my athletes to be the best, I want them to make millions of dollars” “The mobility and the slow grooving and all that stuff (to get athletes to barbell squat well), isn’t that like whittling a square peg (in a round hole)?” “The worst coaches are the ones who say “This is what I did when I was a player”” “I think people are afraid of the term “functional training” because they don’t know what it is” “We are inhibited bilaterally, we are less efficient” “What we do, particularly prevalent in the football world, is we listen to and copy people like ourselves…. all people call for is agreement” “The key to cheating is to know who to cheat off of (in regards to learning from others in the field...

Once upon a time when you walked into a commercial health club you saw row after row of treadmills and strength training machines. The only constant is change (someone smart said that, but I'm not sure who), nowadays when you walk into many health clubs or fitness studios you see a lot of open space and very few, if any strength training machines. That was then: commercial fitness used to be machine driven The original health clubs and fitness facilities were influenced by the bodybuilding culture so the focus was on equipment for muscle isolation so users could get their swoll on and hit their GAINZ. Over the past fifteen years or so there has been a tremendous shift and while many commercial gyms still have some strength training equipment they have gotten rid of extraneous pieces to create open spaces for members to move. Episode 39 of All About Fitness talks about how this change came about, who influenced it and, most importantly, how it benefits YOUR fitness program! This is now: many modern facilities feature plenty of open space and lots of different types of free weight equipment to challenge ALL of the muscles in your body at the same time (This is from Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning; Mike was a guest on episode 34 and his facility has repeatedly been voted one of the top gyms in the US by Mens Health) Thanks for tuning in!
