Funeral Mass vs. Celebration of Life by DMR
Johnny Luby's Weekly Ramblings Shane MacGowan's Funeral Mass takes place in Nenagh this afternoon.
November 22-25,1963 spanned Friday through Monday. It saw the assassination of the President and the live television broadcast of the assassin's murder. A television first. Meanwhile Americans of all political parties and those with none sat riveted in front of their television sets as the solemn pageantry of a state funeral unfolded. From the arrival of the casket, young widow and new President and First Lady at Andrews Air Force Base to the arrival ceremony at the US Capitol, through the televised Funeral Mass at St. Matthew's Cathedral to internment at Arlington National Cemetery. The images are iconic and unforgettable. In this episode, René Lafayette pays tribute to the memory of the 35th President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
Join Father Kirby as he discusses the true purpose of the funeral Mass and why it's not a celebration of life. Are you aware of the misconception surrounding this sacred ceremony? Share below!—Morning Offering with Fr. Kirby, November 15, 2023—————————Every morning, join Father Jeffrey Kirby as he begins the day with prayer and reflection. In a few short minutes, Father Kirby guides you in prayer, shares a brief reflection grounding your day in the Church's rhythm of feast days and liturgy, and provides you with the encouragement necessary to go forward with peace and strength. Let us do as the saints urge and begin our days in prayer together so as a community of believers we may join the Psalmist in saying, “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” (Psalm 5:3-4)

"In one way it was a very straightforward celebration of a Funeral Mass as would take place at the death of any Catholic in any parish church. And yet in another way it was a uniquely historical event and an event of great emotional depth and stature. "I think we can say it's the first time [in over 200 years] that a pope has buried a pope who has just died and in that sense there was a uniqueness to it. But I think it was also a moment in which, for me certainly, there was a heightened sense of loss - a sense of my own sadness that Benedict is no longer with us in person. At the same time the ceremony was an unshakable expression of faith and trust in the promises of Jesus. So we had both sadness and hope, we had the grief of loss and the certainty of faith. "There were some words used in one of the prayers that appealed to me, particularly, and it was an appeal to Mary Salus Populi Romani, that she would intercede that Benedict would now see the face of Jesus and that we would be comforted on our pilgrim way. "Those words touched me because I reflected on how much Benedict, his life and his spirituality, was focused on a relationship with Jesus. Those books that he wrote about Jesus of Nazareth in some ways summed up not only his learning but also his spirituality and his prayer. "The other day, Archbishop Gänswein, who knows him better than anybody did, was saying that it was that image of Jesus always accompanying the Church, always being with the Church, that was the most radically fundamental thing in Pope Benedict's life. "And I was thinking of the time when I was in St Peter Square when he gave his last homily as serving Pope before he left for Castel Gandolfo. In that homily, he used the image of Jesus asleep in the back of the boat when the storm came on the Sea of Galilee and the disciples were frightened." Archbishop Gänswein repeated that and gave a little gloss on it. He said, "Benedict used to say, 'but now Jesus never sleeps and he's always with us'." So during the Mass I was thinking about those things and, quite simply, how lovable Benedict was and therefore thanking God for the gifts that He gave us through him. Cardinal Vincent Nichols Vatican, 5 January 2023

Jesus Tells Us That More is Happening Than Just Our Letting Go When Someone Dies There is an ancient and beautiful prayer reflecting on the loss of a loved one and turning to God. It begins beautifully. We seem to give them back to you O God . . . Who first gave them to us. We seem . . . The simple truth is God Who has given them . . . has never taken His hand off them. They have always been His. The prayer catches a beautiful note on leave taking. We are saying good-bye. We are letting go. In a real way, especially as we accompany a person through the difficult stages of having a chronic illness, there is a lot of leave taking and saying good-bye. Yet our Gospel reading (scripture of Jesus raising from the dead the only son of a mother) goes beyond this prayer and saying good-bye. In the Gospel, a remarkable scene is described, as a mother, friends and neighbors march in a funeral procession. They are shedding their tears of sadness and loss. They are crying their good-byes. As they move forward, the Lord arrives. We do not reflect on this part of the scene enough. Precisely at the moment of leave taking, the Lord is pleased to introduce Himself. One of the powerful moments of a Funeral Mass, or Memorial Mass, is not merely a leave taking. It is the moment, in our grief and all that we have gone through, we encounter Christ. And, that changes things. When the Lord is present, everything becomes different. The Lord Says There is More Happening Here Than You Realize In the scripture, the Lord stops because He is moved. St. Luke points out that Jesus does not stop because of the young man. Our Lord is moved by the grief of the mourners, especially the mother. The Lord heard the weeping, and He stopped. The Lord tells the mother to stop crying. He is not saying, get over it. He did not say your tears have no value to Me. It is the Lord saying that there is more happening here than you realize. The Lord stops the movement of grief for a moment. He places His hand on the coffin. The Lord says, young man, I tell you, arise. During this month in which we honor and pray for our deceased loved ones, hear what happens when Jesus arrives at a Memorial or Funeral Mass. Listen to this Meditation Media on what happens when a person dies.

There have been emotional scenes this afternoon at the funerals of the two Sligo murder victims, Michael Snee and Aidan Moffitt. The funerals took place at the same time, in Sligo and in Lisacul in Co. Roscommon. In his homily at the Funeral Mass for Michael Snee, Fr Noel Rooney, parish priest of St. Joseph's Church in Ballytivnan, spoke of the sadness, grief, devastation, disbelief, and anger, at Michael's death He said it was important not to allow the horror of Michael's death define his beautiful life. He said Michael was a beautiful, kind, and gentle person. He was much-loved and had a heart filled with love. Fr Rooney said that last Tuesday, the day his body was discovered, he had cooked a stew for his family and phoned at 6.30pm that evening to ask if they had enjoyed it. He had planned a visit to Rosses Point with his nephew later that evening, but was cancelled because of the weather. And later that same night, around 10.30pm, his two nieces would make would make the grim discovery. Aaron Spring, nephew of Michael, spoke of Michael's love for his family, and said the Moffitt family were also in their thoughts at this time. Among those in attendance at the funeral was the aide-de-camp to An Taoiseach. Meanwhile, at the same time, Father Michael McManus, a close friend of the Moffitt family, was the chief celebrant at the Funeral Mass of Aidan Moffitt at Liscul in Co Roscommon. He said last Tuesday morning was one he would never forget, when he heard of Aidan's death. Words failed him at this time, he said. He prayed also for the family of Michael Snee. He said Aidan was a man of great faith and faith would help people get through this difficult time. While tributes were paid to Aidan by Martin McMahon. Listen to all four contributions here.

Sometimes the beauty of a moment or of something we are looking at or experiencing, forces us to pause and sort of take it in. The beauty is at another level. It is not on the surface. It is beneath the surface. One has to work a little harder to experience the beauty not just see the beauty.
