When 17-year-old Alissa Turney is reported missing in Phoenix, it takes years before detectives treat her case as a homicide. A new investigation unearths dark family secrets, leading to a dramatic courtroom drama and an outcome no one saw coming. Andrea Canning reports.
In today's episode, I sat down with Sarah Turney, sister of Alissa Turney, and we talked about everything that's happened leading up to and following her sister's murder trial, where their father was the accused. Shockingly, Michael Turney was acquitted after a lack of preparation from the prosecution. She also shared some personal details about how she's been exploited by 20/20 and other content creators and how it's shaped her views on true crime. Sibling rivalries are a normal experience. Typically they happen when you're younger and eventually you grow out of them (hopefully) and the bond that forms after is something that is unbreakable. Alissa Turney was a girl who didn't always see eye to eye with her younger sister Sarah when they were kids, but ultimately, a few decades later, and Sarah would do anything possible to bring justice in this strange and disturbing case.

Sarah's fight to capture the murderer of her late sister, Alissa, has made big waves in recent months due to her social media campaigns, billboards, Voices for Justice podcast, media interviews, and of course, her iconic TikTok videos. Nearly two decades after Alissa's disappearance, Michael Turney, Sarah and Alissa's father, has been charged with second-degree homicide. Sarah joins Celene Beth this week to talk about the work she has done on behalf of her sister, Alissa, and learning about the death of Charles Vallow in her hometown in Arizona. To listen to Sarah's journey and get info on her advocacy work, please check out https://www.voicesforjusticepodcast.com/.
A plan of Michael Turney's is found, and even though it's not related to Alissa it puts him in prison for 10 years. Sarah continues her search for justice, finds new allies and her own voice.. and in doing so might have just broken this case wide open.
May 17th 2001 was Alissa's last day of her junior year at Paradise Valley High School… but normal teenager excited for summer adventures, just disappears? Initially her case was closed as a troubled teen running away from home. After family secrets are revealed, things might not have been so simple. With time, the truth has slowly unraveled due to her sister's love and dedication to finding answers which resulted in the arrest of prime suspect Michael Turney. If you are looking for even more details and information on this case check out Voices for Justice by Sarah Turney, which includes interviews with their friends and family, a look into Alissa's childhood, and Sarah's personal journey for her sister's justice. Please be advised we do discuss the topic of sexual abuse throughout this case. Welcome to Episode 39, the week of family issues. We are doing things slightly different this week, we have recordings from the cases we talk about! Amanda starts it this week with the almost sympathetic story of Amanda Pan. Pan didn't appreciate the way she was raised and decided to take matters into her own hands...so to speak. Victoria follows up with Michael Turney and the awful way he treated his daughter and the unfortunate result. The story dives into the great work and steps a sister will take to get justice, even if its against your own father. #justiceforalissa P.S. Don't forget to Like, Subscribe, Tell your friends and Download! Check out all the socials and leave us some love, hearing from you makes our day! BYYYYEEEE
Sarah Turney is one of the strongest, most level headed and kindest people I've ever spoken to...and that's all in the face of a fight for justice for her sister Alissa Turney. I highly recommend you listen to her podcast "Voices For Justice" all the way through, but listening to this full episode of "Be Here For a While," will give you a general background that I hope encourages you to look further into Alissa Turney's life, her disappearance and Michael Turney's bizarre life and transgressions. It was May 17th, 2001 in Phoenix, Arizona. Michael Turney, a single father called 911 and reported his step daughter, 17 year old Alissa Turney, missing. He told police that she disappeared between the time he dropped her off at home, and picked up his biological daughter, Sarah from a friend’s house. He continued to tell police where he suspected she’d gone. Alissa had talked frequently about going to live with her Aunt in California, and Michael felt she had finally done it. The department, already having many missing people reported, assumed that she was a runaway and would turn up soon. But Alissa’s disappearance would end up becoming much more complicated.
