Boys' Bible Study

This intense Bible fanfiction thriller starring Christopher Walken is now heralded as a cult classic despite not being critically understood at the time of its release. The New York Times described it as "…bad enough to end the recent proliferation of religious thrillers." It's true that the 1990s were filled with religious thrillers -- we at Boys' Bible Study have extensively covered the "angelslop" and "devilslop" that proliferated through the era, with audiences fascinated by Christian pop culture moral frameworks imbued on human life. But the New York Times is completely wrong — THE PROPHECY has stood the test of time as the BEST of the 90s religious thrillers, in part because its timeless tone doesn't rely on the groan-inducing "smart, sexy, funny" humor typical to the decade. THE PROPHECY is instead gritty and otherworldly, with impressive visual effects and character design that rival the HELLRAISER franchise. Its well-researched Biblical scripture lends it credibility, and its fictional expansion of the Bible — centering on a lost 23rd book of Revelation, known only to angels — is written so convincingly it feels nearly realistic. The film takes place in contemporary Los Angeles, where a priest-turned-LAPD detective (Elias Koteas) uses his knowledge of Christianity to solve a case of biblical proportions. A mysterious dead body carrying an ancient Bible with unknown additional text is autopsied to reveal biology in common with an unborn fetus, initiating the detective into a modern-day war between angels and demons over the soul of a disgraced cannibal Korean War veteran whose power could tip the metaphysical scale of evil and turn earth into a second hell. The film is notable for its A-list cast, including a show-stealing appearance by Viggo Mortensen as Satan, and for its treatment of Native American mythology. Although we at BBS can't confirm the film's accuracy, the portrayal of indigenous religion feels well-researched and respectful — a unique fusion of indigenous and western mythologies that reads as a genuine lesson in cross-cultural respect. THE PROPHECY is the rare religious-themed film that is both entertaining and well-researched, stimulating on whatever spiritual level the viewer receives it. This week, we review Cyborg 2: Glass Shadow (1993), Michael Schroeder's cyberpunk sci-fi action B-movie set in a future dominated by corporate warfare and synthetic humans. Angelina Jolie and Elias Koteas star as Cash Reese and Colt Ricks — a cyborg assassin and her combat trainer — in a story that explores identity, autonomy, and what it means to be human. With Cash literally packed with a liquid explosive called "Glass Shadow" and used as a walking weapon by the ruthless Pinwheel Corporation, this film raises intriguing questions about who truly owns your body — and your soul.Is this Jolie's most explosive early role, or just a blast from the B-movie past? Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay spent the evening playing pool and arcade video games at the Foot Lair before jumping on to talk "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Andy kicks the episode off by talking about the delicious pizza in the movie, and how it reminded him of the time he was physically tossed out of a $1 slice joint in New York. Then the fellas try to make sense out of one of the most befuddling kids movies that for over a decade was the most successful indie movie of all-time. On paper, none of it should work, but thanks in large part to the genius design of Jim Henson's last effort in film, the ridiculously cool costumes brought the comic book-turned-cartoon to life. Pairing the turtle designs with Hong Kong's legendary Golden Harvest production team brought top tier martial arts to the big screen with a grimy rain soaked late '80s New York as the backdrop. Not only did Raph and the gang look lifelike, but they faced off against one of the coolest looking villains ever with Shredder's incredible design. Toss in Degen Cinema royalty, Elias Koteas, as the bulky Casey Jones, and you have an undeniable children's classic that has six year olds, and grown degens shouting T-U-R-T-L-E POWER.

An all new Appreciation Month is upon us here at Cinema Degeneration and this time we are delving into the twisted works and mind of the one and only Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg whose career started in the late 1960's! It's a month long (maybe longer) celebration of all things body horror, strange killers, telekinesis, rampant diseases, sexual perversions, more body horror, technological mutations, oh and did we mention body horror??? Our 4th episode is based upon one of his more odd efforts with the 1996 quirky thriller "CRASH".  Starring James Spader, Holly Hunter, Elias Koteas, Deborah Kara Unger, and Rosanna Arquette.  A controversial movie based off of the J.G. Ballard novel of the same name about car crash victims that are suddenly "turned on" by car accidents that become involved in a cult-like subculture of likeminded lost souls. Containing scenes of violence and depravity that have to be seen to be believed.   If that doesn't sound intriguing to you, then you've got to check your pulse because you may already be dead. Our deep dive discussion and dissection on this film is headed off by Cameron Scott and Marcus Koch. Buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride!   "Maybe the next time, darling. Maybe the next time."

He shares memorable experiences working with industry giants like Billy Bob Thornton on Goliath, Quentin Tarantino, Faye Dunaway, and Ethan Hawke on Alias, and discusses his unique approach to improvisation within scripted dialogue. Kevin's philosophy of "just committing" to choices, even when they might be mistakes, has led to some of his most memorable on-screen moments. The discussion delves into Kevin's extensive television career beyond Alias, including his work on Scorpion alongside Elias Koteas, The Blacklist, and his collaboration with comedy legends like Stephen Merchant on Hello Ladies. Kevin reflects on his friendship with Jack Black from their UCLA theater school days and his musical endeavors with Kyle Gass of Tenacious D in their band Trainwreck. These connections highlight the collaborative nature of Kevin's career and his commitment to building genuine relationships in the industry.Throughout the conversation, Kevin emphasizes the importance of being a good listener and staying present in the moment, skills that serve him not only as an actor but also in his personal life and relationships with his children. He discusses the evolution of television production, comparing the cinematic quality of Alias shot on 35mm film to today's HD productions, and shares insights into the fast-paced nature of television work where actors must shoot eight pages of dialogue per day and be ready to commit fully to their performances. The episode concludes with Kevin Weisman sharing his legacy vision: to be remembered as someone authentic who made people laugh and truly listened to others. He encourages listeners to support Save the Children and No Kid Hungry, organizations working to ensure children have access to meals, especially those who rely on school lunch programs. In "Seven Veils", he also reunites with Seyfried, who he worked with on the 2009 film "Chloe", in this visually stunning, propulsive work, filmed on location during the staging of his acclaimed production of "Salome". Egoyan directed the opera "Salome" in 1996, the first opera in what would be many to come over his career. Best known as a prominent film director since the 1980s, Egoyan has proven he is a master of both mediums, and "Seven Veils" is his way of bringing both together. The film stars the great actor Elias Koteas ("Exotica", "Crash") who joins us in this conversation. Support 'The People's Joker': https://www.thepeoplesjoker.com/ Joku and Rosa review and analyze 'The People's Joker' a 2022 / 2024 American parody superhero film directed by Vera Drew, and written by Vera Drew and Bri LeRose. The film unofficially parodies characters from the Batman comics, and the main character is a transgender woman based on the Joker, played by Drew. The film also features Scott Aukerman, Tim Heidecker, Maria Bamford, David Liebe Hart, Robert Wuhl, and Bob Odenkirk in supporting roles. We also review 'Nosferatu' a 2024 American gothic horror film written and directed by Robert Eggers. It is a remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 film Nosferatu, itself inspired by Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampire Nosferatu and Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp as the married Hutter couple, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe in supporting roles. We also review and discuss 'Crash' a 1996 Canadian erotic thriller film written, produced and directed by David Cronenberg, based on J. G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name. Starring James Spader, Deborah Kara Unger, Elias Koteas, Holly Hunter and Rosanna Arquette, it follows a film producer who, after surviving a car crash, becomes involved with a group of symphorophiliacs who are aroused by car crashes and tries to rekindle his sexual relationship with his wife. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

HALLOWEEN HUMPFEST means we stay spooky five days a week all October long and on “TRUE THREAT THURSDAYS” our scares are rooted in reality. For certain movies there is a level of skepticism and exploitation you can't ignore but today's discussion involves a film based on one of the most notorious unsolved serial killings in US history. The seemingly unending spiral that is the Zodiac Killer case can feel very lofty but David Fincher manages to adapt Robert Graysmith's book on the killer in a way that strikes a fantastic line between terror, procedure and anxiety. We're talking about Fincher's 2007 true horror “ZODIAC” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Elias Koteas, Philip Baker Hall, Chloe Sevigny and many more. A real ensemble feast so well balanced and compelling that you can hardly tell it's pushing three hours. Arguably one of the best films based on a true crime that exists with some of the most frightening scenes we will see all month. Can we eat this movies butt any harder? Following the discussion, Bob presents some of his own evidence on who he thinks the Zodiac killer might be and it shocks Angela to the core. About a year ago, Bridget Fonda was a real dream lady to me. One of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. I've felt that way since seeing Jackie Brown as a kid. Unfortunately, I keep watching awful movies with her in them and the magic is crumbling away. Bridget Fonda, Elias Koteas, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, Maury Chaykin, Graham Greene and Don Mckellar are in this. You might ask how one could possibly go wrong with a cast like that. How could this film be anything but magical? Well, unless you're a Grandma in the mid 90s, you're probably gonna be befuddled. Tune in and find out the specifics. If you're enjoying this run, don't forget we have so very many episodes on Billy Crudup, John Cazale, Robert Longstreet, Radha Mitchell, Brandon Lee, Brad Pitt, Wesley Snipes, horror movies and now? Don Mckellar's second movie is a bit of a masterpiece. Hold onto your hats, its time for The Adjuster! Atom Egoyan tells a story of an insurance adjuster who bones down all the people he's helping file claims and they all stay at a hotel run by some religious people who just love the adjuster. Who is the adjuster? ELIAS KOTEAS! I bet you thought I was gonna say Don McKellar, but you were wrong... Don McKellar plays a real dork who works with the adjusters wife at a censorship center? This movie is gorgeous to look at. It's got that specialized Egoyan tragedy/trauma party cookin. Everyone acts their butts off. You should watch this. Don't believe me? Well I guess you should listen to this episode for more proof.

This week we're getting sloppy and erotic as we break down David Cronenberg's 1996 antithesis to the 90's erotic thriller, Crash, a movie about how people can't get off unless they're about to die horribly in a car accident. Adapted from J.G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name, which was an extension of his short story in the collection The Atrocity Exhibition, the film stars James Spader doing his best to look like making sweet, sweet love to a woman's leg wound is something he's really into. It also bring us Elias Koteas in his second appearance on the pod steaming up the windows with his menacing sexuality and Holly Hunter, taking the strange journey into the world of sexy death. Sound strange? Maybe more than a little off-putting? You have no idea. Listen to the episode for the full scope of the struggle.

Sometimes Hollywood “royalty” aren't enough for a film to stand out and become a blockbuster. When you have director Gregory Hoblit, behind such genre films as PRIMAL FEAR (1996) and FREQUENCY (2000), screenwriter Nicholas Kazan behind AT CLOSE RANGE (1986) and REVERSAL OF FORTUNE (1990), and Denzel Washington starring, you'd think the film FALLEN (1998) would be a blockbuster. But it wasn't. Why?Synopsis: Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) successfully captures serial killer Edgar Reese (Elias Koteas). On the day of his execution, Reese seems to have made peace with Hobbes, shaking hands. But while dying, he appears unrepentant. Days later, copy cat murders begin and drag Hobbes back into a crime wave that may be more than just done by a man.Besides Denzel Washington, the film's cast includes John Goodman, Donald Sutherland, James Gandolfini, and Elias Koteas. The movie was released during a wave of supernatural religious thrillers in the 1990's that were either hit or miss. FALLEN received mixed reviews and left the box office with little success. A Patreon pick from one of our listeners, the podcast crew take a look at the movie and give their thoughts.
