In this episode of This Week in Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik talk with Dr. Jim Green, former NASA Chief Scientist. He discusses how we can search for technosignatures that might indicate advanced civilizations in other star systems, new ideas on Mars sample return, and his fascinating experience consulting on the movie, The Martian! Also: this week's robotic landings on the Moon - one successful, one partly so; what's up with the USAF X-37B mini-shuttle; and recent news on those Energizer Bunnies of space, Voyagers 1&2. Their wings have been clipped a bit, but they just keep going... join us! News Lunar Landing Week: Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander achieved a flawless touchdown in Mare Chrisium, the Intuitive Machines Athena lander reached the Moon's south polar region but experienced issues with its navigation radar (and tipped over), and SpaceX's Starship test flight 8 successfully caught its booster for the third time but lost control of the upper stage, resulting in the breakup of the upper stage and debris over the Bahamas and Caribbean. NASA powered down additional instruments on both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 to extend their remaining power supply, including Voyager 1's cosmic ray system that helped confirm its entry into interstellar space in 2012. The secretive US Space Force X-37B space plane landed at Vandenberg Space Force Base after 434 days in orbit, completing its seventh mission, which tested new orbital capabilities, including aerobraking techniques. A newly released list showcases the world's top ten locations for dark skies and stargazing, with the US only having only one location—in Hawaii—to make the list. Dr. Jim Green His Career: Dr. Green goes over his former role as NASA's Chief Scientist and highlights key aspects of his career, including running the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) and leading NASA's Planetary Science Division, and how his interest in space first began. The Martian: Dr. Green also explains how he got involved as a consultant for Ridley Scott's movie, "The Martian," and how NASA got really involved with the film. He also shares his favorite scene from the movie. NASA's Search for Alien Civilizations: Dr. Green shares how he helped shift NASA's focus from traditional SETI to searching for technosignatures like Dyson Spheres and O'Neill structures in other star systems, securing $10 million in funding for research that could detect megastructures in our astronomical data while noting that humanity may need similar space habitats in 800 million years when the sun makes Earth uninhabitable. Mars Sample Return Strategy: Dr. Green explains how NASA's evolving plan to return samples fropm Mars includes developing Mars Ascent Vehicles that could eventually support human missions while revealing that Perseverance was deliberately designed to place sample tubes on the surface so any nation could retrieve them, making the mission more politically viable with budget offices and Congress. Humanity's Cosmic Future: Dr. Green reveals that he helped create NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program to support new companies for lunar missions. Despite early failures, he emphasized that humanity must utilize space resources and capabilities to ensure our species' long-term survival. Discover Al's unique fly pattern techniques for enticing steelhead and gain insights into the rich history of spey casting, from Jim Green's legacy to present-day innovations. Tune in to uncover the secrets that will make your casts easier and more effective than ever before! Show Notes with Al Buhr on Two-Handed Casting.  01:22 - Al Burr takes us back to his early days in fly fishing at the age of 15. Despite being mostly self-taught, Al's keen observation and persistent curiosity paved the way for his mastery of fly casting. 03:31 -  Al's journey into two-handed casting began when he received a 16-foot boron rod from Jim Green. Eventually, Al learned the figure of eight method from Canadian experts on the Skagit River. Two-Handed Fly Casting: Spey Casting Techniques 12:22 - Al's journey to writing his book began with his involvement in the Federation of Fly Fishers. As the program expanded to include two-handed casting certification, Al took on the role of chair and recognized the need for a clear instructional guide. Over time, this booklet evolved into a larger technical manual, covering basic and advanced casting techniques   Understanding Constant Tension in Spey Casting 18:00 - Constant tension eliminates the need for pauses in the back cast, ensuring a smooth, continuous motion crucial for efficient casts. Regardless of line length or shape, constant tension allows anglers to regulate the depth of the D loop, enabling them to cast effectively without needing ample space behind them. 29:00 - The stop-and-go approach or forced turnover involves pausing or stopping during the casting motion, causing the rod to unload and reload with power. This pause can lead to slack or waves in the line, affecting the efficiency and accuracy of the cast. 32:53 - Besides constant tension and the power-up technique, another key aspect is using a modified D loop for casting efficiency. 48:04 - Al recounts a conversation with Tim Rajeff during a casting event in San Francisco. "The man who straightens his rod the fastest will win." - Tim Rajeff 55:48 - Al explains the figure of eight casting technique as visualizing an eight laid horizontally. You perform a crescent lift and a round lift for one side of the eight, drop down to form an X, and then curve back up for the other side. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/581

NASA's Chief Scientist Dr. Jim Green joins Tim to talk about big plans for the red planet, Mars. Jim has had a long and distinguished career on some of the agency's major research projects and missions that have explored the rest of our solar system, from Mars to Pluto. In this episode, Jim gets into detail on what we have learned, can learn and will learn from Earth's next door neighbor. He uncovers some of the secrets of Mars. This episode was originally released on September 27, 2021. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Life_on_Mars.mp3 Next to the Moon and the Sun, the most captivating celestial bodies in our night sky for mankind over thousands and thousands of years has been Mars. The red planet. The fourth rock from the sun. So, it made sense when we started to make plans for space travel, Mars would figure prominently into those plans. As far back as the inception of both the Soviet and American space programs in the late 1950s and early 1960s, space scientist started making plans to explore Mars. By July 4, 1997, NASA was able to land a spacecraft on Mars.  The Mars Pathfinder was launched on December 4th 1996. Six months later, it landed on Mars. The unit featured the first-ever robotic rover that sent an unprecedented amount of data on the planet back to scientists at NASA. After that, there were other missions, which included Mars orbiters, landers, and excavators.  And the United States hasn't been the only country working to explore the planet. The Soviet Union, then Russia, then China, then India, and even the United Arab Emirates have launched missions to Mars. Each time, we learn something new and something significant about Mars. But in the end, there is one question that continues to drive mankind's quest to visit Mars. Is there life on that planet, and if so, what does it look like? Jim Green has worked to find the answers to this and many other questions throughout his career as a scientist at NASA. Links NASA's Mars Exploration Program James L. At Marshall, Dr. Green developed and managed the Space Physics Analysis Network, which provided many scientists, all over the world, with rapid access to data, other scientists, and specific NASA computer and information resources. In addition, Dr. Green was a safety diver in the Neutral Buoyancy tank making over 150 dives until he left MSFC in 1985. From 1985 to 1992 he was the Head of the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The NSSDC is NASA's largest space science data archive. In 1992 he became the Chief of the Space Science Data Operations Office until 2005 when he became the Chief of the Science Proposal Support Office. While at GSFC, Dr. Green was also co-investigator and the Deputy Project Scientist on the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) mission. From 1992 to 2000 he was also the Deputy Project Scientist for Mission Operations and Data Analysis for the Global Geospace Science Missions WIND and POLAR.
