Following on from the viral success of his retro throwback to the days of the ZX Spectrum and other 8-bit home computers, MJ Hibbett brought his musical mix of comedy and meme-ability to the Edinburgh Fringe… although the hit song was released in 2000, and he didn't make the Fringe till 2015, this might feel tenuous but when you have a one-hit wonder online, you live the dream. MJ, along with Steven Hewitt, expanded that little ditty into a time-travelling rock and roll opera, mixing in Back to the Future, Ukuleles, and obscure Doctor Who references. They join myself and Jen Blacker in he Leith Radio Studios to talk about the show, viral success, and of course, they brought a guitar for a bit of a turn. So not only are we back in time to 2015 but back in time to 1982 as well. It's the Free Fringe at Sneaky Petes, it's Hey Hey 16K.

This week on Axe of the Blood God, Kat, Nadia, and Eric board the Magic School Bus and travel back to the very beginnings of JRPG development. PC98 Audi from Digital Foundry makes a guest appearance to delve deep into the machine that arguably started it all: The humble PC-88. Audi also has tons of history to share about the MSX, and other high-tech '80s stuff that was vital to the early evolution of JRPGs. Frankly, he's the proverbial Miss Frizzle on this trip. Without him, Kat, Nadia, and Eric would probably fall out of the bus and get eaten by a microprocessor. Also in this episode: Kat's in Super Robot War heaven, we have a trailer for Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher 2, and Square Enix is gonna make you wet with a new Star Ocean game. ["Hey Hey 16k" is by MJ Hibbett and the Validators. Enjoy your earworm]

Ben Baker has always been fascinated by the world of pop parodies - musical spoofs or pastiches of existing bands, singers and genres - from "Spitting Image" to "Horrible Histories". In this first edition he looks at three and a bit decades of ribbing directed at the Mancunian mouthpiece that is Steven Patrick Bulbous Overcoat Morrissey and The Smiths. A misunderstood and unfortunately all too understood character that many have taken great delight in aping or paying tribute to, including Radio Active, Who Dares Wins, Frank Sidebottom, Mitch Benn, MJ Hibbett, The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Bill Nye The Science Guy, Armando Iannucci, Harry Hill, Jay Foreman, Darrell Maclaine and...Bernard Manning?! --------------------------------------------- Why Cant I Be You? is written and produced by Ben Baker. All clips come under review as fair use and are copyright their original sources. Got someone in mind you'd like me to cover in a future "Why Can't I Be You"? Or spot any Moz-mocking that I've missed. Let me know on Twitter @BenBakerBooks. And remember the lesson of The Smiths. Just because a bunch of wankers like it, doesn't mean that it's shit....

Mark "MJ" Hibbett is one of the most unique, funny and intelligent figures on the British indie pop scene. The man knows how to write a tune and, what's more, get a crowd going. He's been making music since forming his first band on the way home from a school art trip in 1981 and, along with his troupe the Validators, has been gigging for years. His list of accolades include releasing the first ever internet single and getting loads of recognition from the likes of the BBC and Rolling Stone. He's got a great new album out, Still Valid, and here we chat about that, gigging, footy, his ambitions to become a doctor (oh yes) and how he turns a room when people don't like him into a room who love him. This is not so much the holiday podcast as the pre-holiday podcast, because for all we are away now, I recorded this on Thursday night before going away, as we prepare ourselves for the unspeakable burden of doing absolutely fuck all for two weeks. I am taking a pile of books and a pile of new music and we are going to do pretty much nothing at all.  My parents used to do really adventurous travelling when we were young, but honestly I don't have the energy.  I am so incredibly fucking exhausted from constant Toadery that actually, despite having a holiday inferiority complex, pretty much all I can cope with at the moment is a couple of weeks of fuck all. Even last year when we went to Portland for a couple of weeks, we took all the technology and recorded interviews and all sorts at Pickathon.  It was relaxing and nice, but I still got a hell of a lot of work done.  This time I will take along some tunes which I have been meaning to catch up with, perhaps record a podcast or two, and basically spend the rest of the time lying in the sun by the pool.  My folks might not be all that impressed, but the recharging of the batteries is the sole purpose of this trip and I think we might manage just that. The Toadcast - the weekly podcast from Song, by Toad

Yes, another one. Mwah hah haaa. Lock up the kids, Campfires & Battlefields, because the Song, by Toad musical cuss-o-rama is back on air for more blethering, swearing, slurring and first class tunery. Actually, I don't think this one is anything like as good as the first, if I'm honest. It's a bit over-long at fifteen songs so I think in future I'm going to limit myself to ten or twelve at the most, not least because my shitbox of a computer starts having a panic once I've stuffed that many audio files into a single project. So, fifteen songs then, with a bit of an emphasis on late 80s jangly indie guitar and containing one of the most brilliant ever drunken fuck-ups about three-quarters of the way through. Beware the horrors of letting your children turn into indie kids, people! So a bit too long, and occasionally too much inconsequential chatter, but we live and learn and the next one will be better, I promise. Toadcast #2, the 80s English Indie One 1.
