After making their mark on the world with the Earthworm Jim series, Shiny Entertainment set out to create bold, weird video games that weren't specifically engineered to sell action figures and Saturday morning cartoons. As the '90s rolled on, the developer released unique creations like MDK, Messiah, and Sacrifice, but the shift to the 21st century saw the studio transform into just another maker of movie tie-ins. And, as responsible, thoughtful podcasters, we can only ask "What the hell happened?" On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Stuart Gipp, and Digital Foundry's John Linneman as the crew digs into Shiny's eclectic catalog to discover the joys of playing as chubby angels and snipers with incredibly odd heads.Retronauts is a completely fan-funded operation. Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are building community.Community, support, collaboration, and a whole lot of laughter...A couple of months ago, we received an IG message that read, in part: “Hello, My name is Jurgen. I created an online marketplace for verified Pittsburgh small businesses called YinzMart.com.” Jurgen went on to say that YinzMart is meant to help yinzer- owned businesses. Well, you can imagine our joy when we read “yinz” and “yinzer” in the same paragraph… Needless to say, Jurgen and Tressa set up a call to chat. As Tressa sees it, the mission of YinzMart is to lift up local small businesses, help them in new and innovative ways, connect them with each other, and build community. And she was inspired to not only feature Jurgen & YinzMart on the show, but to welcome some of the small business owners who are part of YinzMart. What followed was a joyful meeting at the very cool and very modern Digital Foundry on Penn State's New Kensington campus. (A huge thank you to the folks at the Digital Foundry - specifically, Alyssa Pistininzi - for their hospitality.)In short, the group of folks we assembled are incredible humans who care deeply about their communities and their fellow small business owners: Jurgen Koster, Kelly Cravotta, Julian Figarette, HongChing, Cassandra Ross, and Emily “the bun” Benka. You'll hear about their journeys as small business owners, about how they support each other and how others support them, and how YinzMart is supporting them all. David and Nilay start the show by exploring the increasing disconnect between the people who make AI products, and the people who keep saying they don't want them. (Or, at least, don't want to pay for them.) The AI industry is starting to retrench to a business-first approach, because there's simply no killer app for it yet. Speaking of no killer apps! Allison Johnson then joins the show to talk about the shockingly short life of the Samsung TriFold, and her bizarre journey to try and review the now-dead foldable. Finally, in the lightning round, it's time for Brendan Carr is a Dummy, the fate of the metaverse, and some important internet debunking. The guys at Digital Foundry put themselves in a bit of hot water because they absolutely glazed DLSS 5 - the new technology shown by NVIDIA - and it amounts to an advanced Snapchat filter. I'm willing to give them a pass if only because geeking out about tech is what they do, and I am sure this is very impressive on a technical level. However, NVIDIA is calling it "content control Generative AI" and they say it is just a tool. In one breath, they say it doesn't change anything about the art style or graphics, and in the other they proudly announce it makes changes at the "geometric level". But it's just a tool, guys. The devs have the control and it isn't meant to replace a team member, duh. Ofcourse then one need ask: why does it generate geometry, rather than say enhance/smooth like DLSS4.5?
Prof and Dev talk about Nvidia's newest foray into making life into an AI-fueled hellscape--with an assist from Digital Foundry's heel turn. Then, we chat about God of War: Ragnarok, Pokemon Pokopia, Slay the Spire 2, adn Diablo IV.

Handhelds are on the rise! Where once the only option was a Switch or a Steam Deck, now we have Android devices like Ayn's ODIN line, Lenovo's Legion Go, and ROG's Ally series. Plus, Playstation and Xbox are expected to commit to hybrid or handheld consoles in the near future. So, how do you know where to start? Do OS's matter? Do price points differ greatly? Here's a casual guide to handhelds on the market today or coming very soon. Their price points, who we think they are for, and why you might choose one over the other. We aren't trying to be Digital Foundry. We aren't going in depth into tech specs. This is just an overview of what we like and don't like of each.

TFIYE Ep#199: Release The Kraken Bunnies! In this episode, hosts Tim Trotter and Nate Foo kick things off with casual banter about their recent woes, including health issues (Tim's skull pains and chiropractor visits, Nate's headaches), matching flat tires on his and his wife's car, extreme California heat (109°F), and AC repairs. Tim shares details on his upcoming mini-vacation to Great Wolf Lodge for water slides, while Nate vents about tire shop hassles and worn treads potentially voiding warranties. They compare road noise in Washington vs. California highways and mention quirky musical roads that play tunes like the William Tell Overture via speed berms. The conversation shifts to major life updates: Tim recounts a grueling week helping his mom prepare for an estate sale on her 35-acre property following his father's passing. He describes hauling massive amounts of accumulated items, including a full shipping container, prepper supplies, barns full of tools, knives, flashlights, old hard drives, MacBooks (like a PowerBook G3), and endless cables. He highlights the emotional and physical toll, plus discoveries like forgotten family ashes. Nate discusses his brother-in-law's dying PC, which has led to piecemeal part replacements, essentially building a new rig. He also reveals last-minute travel drama for PAX West in Seattle: his cousin's sudden divorce forced him to book expensive hotels near Sea-Tac. Nate mentions a side trip to Vancouver, WA, for a family birthday, and they note the coincidence of both being near Great Wolf Lodge areas (though not overlapping). They reflect on reaching Episode 199, teasing the milestone 200th next time, and how they've recorded ~150 episodes together. They geek out over 56K modems, recalling dial-up sounds, specs, and modern USB versions still sold for ~$40 on Amazon for fax needs. They reminisce about connection speeds rarely hitting 53K due to phone line limits. Star Trek App: Nate shares an iOS RSS reader called "Stars" styled after TNG's LCARS interface (beeps, boops included), which Tim already uses weekly. They tie it to Star Trek's influence on iPads. Smartphones & Hardware: Discussion on Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 (now as thin as a regular phone when folded) and Flip; Nate plans to upgrade from his Z Fold 5 despite a center crease crack. They speculate on Apple's potential foldable (maybe an iPad Mini-like device or flip phone), rumors of an ultra-thin "iPhone Air," MagSafe changes, and a possible M4-powered Apple TV. Nate praises a $250 4TB Samsung Evo 870 SSD. Gaming & Apple: They lament Apple's slow gaming push, praising Digital Foundry's coverage of Mac performance (e.g., Cyberpunk on M1+ chips matching 30-series NVIDIA cards in efficiency). They dream of an Apple gaming console or updated Apple TV for titles like Death Stranding. The episode wraps with editing woes (Nate's Audacity setup vs. potential GarageBand switch) and family interruptions in Nate's studio. Clocking in shorter than usual, it's a mix of personal rants, tech nostalgia, and forward-looking gadget hype, ending on their signature "Get forked." This episode highlights the hosts' enduring friendship amid chaos, with plenty of laughs over shared absurdities like "kraken bunnies" (rabbits with papillomavirus horns). We are back with some of the under reported news stories from the past week, August 3 through 8. In today's Daily Fix:The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has been out for several weeks now, and the more gamers put time into it, the more problems they find. Our colleagues at Digital Foundry ran tests on all available versions of the game, and found significant performance issues on the console and PC versions. One of the worst issues would be a hard crash of the game that happens when loading the same save too many times, and a camera problem when playing the game for too long. There's also framerate hiccups all throughout the game across all versions. In slightly happier news, Tony Hawk wants a remake of Tony Hawk's Underground, the sub-franchise of the popular skating games that debuted in 2003. With the release of Tony Hawk's 3 + 4 later this year, we could be one step closer to another remake. And finally, Marvel's Thunderbolts*—sorry, Marvel's The New Avengers—remained number 1 at the domestic box office in its second weekend. The latest entry in the MCU dropped about 44%, which is less than the second week drops of Captain America: Brave new World, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and the third Ant-Man movie. Globally, New Avengers is approaching $280 million, but needs to hit around $360 million to "break even" for Disney.
The Switch 2 Nintendo Direct happened recently, and WOW was in incredible! Recently, Digital Foundry spoke on the lack of DLSS in Cyberpunk 2077 for Switch 2, and that was quickly proven wrong directly from CD Project Red confirming that DLSS is indeed present. We're going to talk about the backlash that lead to this error, and what it means.BECOME A MEMBER

Thanks to AG1 for sponsoring FPS! -- This week we're joined by John Linneman of Digital Foundry to discuss the PS5 Pro. It's been out for a few weeks now so we wanted to check in on how it's been doing post launch, how the library of games is performing and guess what the future holds. Plus we're lucky enough to be joined by Yevhenii Kulyk of GSC Game World, who right now is putting the finishing touches on STALKER 2. We talk through the challenging road to launch, what players should expect on day one and what the future holds for both STALKER 2 and the studio. If you're obsessed with Delorians, The Mummy and Pizza you can discuss that stuff with him directly over on Twitter: @JakeBaldino - Lucy James is a Senior Producer at Gamespot and a Creative Producer at Giant Bomb. She's actually, like, experienced and credentialed and has real life skills and stuff, while the rest of the gang would be funemployed if the YT algorithm didn't kiss them for random, inexplicable reasons. - Skill Up used to work at McDonalds but he got fired for skimming too many chicken nuggets. He says he regrets it since he hasn't had a better job since. -- Listen to the Friends Per Second Podcast on your favourite podcast platform: https://linktr.ee/friendspersecond Subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date: https://friendspersecond.substack.com/ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheFPSPodcast Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/friendspersecond Learn more about your ad choices.
