On Mission: Impossible weekend, it seemed right for Have You Ever Seen to feature a flick all about an impossible mission to climb a cliff, get inside a Greek island fortress and blow up some enormous German blasters. Our 667th episode talks about that trek, but also about revenge and wartime honour. Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn and David Niven lead a fine cast in The Guns Of Navarone, as they and their team try to save the lives of 2000 men. The actors are skillfully guided with tension and even humour by J. Lee Thompson, who was on the roll of his life directing Cape Fear the year after he made this Oscar-winning WWII film. So to celebrate America's Memorial Day, enjoy Ryan's monologue about The Magnificent Six killing a whole whack of Nazis. Well, Actually: at the 38:30 mark, "then became a Russian citizen" should have been "then became a BRITISH citizen". Also, David Niven was one of the Oscar hosts in 1974 when he was onstage during the streaker's appearance (Elizabeth Taylor actually presented Best Picture). Theater projection booth ambience — the feature film is Five Minutes to Live from 1961 and starring Johnny Cash and Ron Howard. This episode also includes just about everything else I loved of that era in theater and film. There will be the pre-movie sirens call for Lobby refreshment and money back guarantees for those who have gotten too much suspense from Hitchcock's Homicidal. And some Gregory Peck greats as we're treated to trailers for Guns of Navarone and On the Beach (which still feels pretty fresh for our turbulent world, unfortunately).Take a mental break in the projection booth… Just don't forget to look out for the cue dots. This episode's cover uses an original photo by Diego Ramirez.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit rajeevsrinivasan.substack.comIn all humility, I accept that my endorsement of Donald Trump for the office of POTUS doesn't make a difference, but I think it's important for me to articulate why I think Trump is the better choice for all concerned. On the one hand, there are the purely objective factors: economic policies, foreign policy, immigration, and so on. On the other hand, there are the subjective factors: who I personally think is good for the US and for India, the only two countries, lets' face it, that I care about. The subjective factors are the ones that matter, I suspect, and my views are shaped by my own personal history. I grew up in an India that looked up to America; many houses had framed photos on their walls that showed a young John Kennedy walking with Nehru in the Rose Garden of the White House; as a food-deficit country we awaited the PL-480 shipments of foodgrains, so much so that cornflour in Malayalam is called ‘American maavu' or flour. I remember as a child when Marilyn Monroe died, and John Kennedy, and I listened to the Voice of America coming in on shortwave radio from, I think, Mauritius; I went to the nearby US Information Center to see an exhibit of moon rocks; my father's PhD thesis was on John Steinbeck; I read SPAN magazine that showed a sanitized picture of life in the US that was aspirational. In college, I devoured information about America, reading Time and Newsweek magazines. I went to the US consulate in Chennai to use the library; and my beloved professor Anthony Reddy, seeing our collective obsession with the US, referred to it as “God's own country” (this was before Amitabh Kant as tourism secretary propagated that moniker for Kerala, and in any case I believed that my two homes – Kerala and California – were indeed God's own countries, at least before systematic rot set in).America permeated our consciousness. Those were the days before TV, and so American soap operas were not yet available in India, but American films were, and I still remember watching many of them. It was our Saturday ritual in the open-air theater. Do I remember many of them? No, but a few, like “Guns of Navarone”, “Death Wish”, still stand out. No, not exactly highbrow, but they left an impression. So did reading William Faulkner, “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”, Tennessee Williams, and even “The Exorcist”. Nixon and Kissinger and their decision to send the 7th Fleet into the Bay of Bengal to intimidate India in 1971, and the shenanigans of Watergate, plus their  coverup of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam, gave me the impression that Republicans were not to be trusted and that they were the bad guys, as compared to the Democrats: I remembered the two Kennedy assassinations.

It is with great sadness that I post this episode today. James Darren was a multi-talented actor and singer. From his iconic roles as Moondoggie in the Gidget films of the 60's to his starring roles in “The Guns of Navarone" and “T.J. Hooker,” along with his recurring role as Vic Fontaine in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” he wowed audiences around the world. Plus, with his Grammy nominated hit “Goodbye Cruel World,” he could do it all. And besides appearing on “Between the Lines” he was also a long-time friend. He passed this morning leaving millions of adoring fans with heartbreak. My wife and I are amongst them. In this episode we share so much of his kindness and talent that it should only bring back beautiful memories of this beautiful man.Support the show

We talk about the paradox of comforting war films; Carl Foreman's script, which placed mythmaking far above historical fact; J. Lee Thompson's directing style, which balanced blockbuster action sequences with philosophical and moral quandaries; the stellar cast, featuring David Niven, Anthony Quinn, and Gregory Peck in a surprisingly morally grey role; and we make connections between The Guns of Navarone and the many films that borrowed from its formula, including The Dirty Dozen, Star Wars, the James Bond films, and Guardians of the Galaxy. In the late 50s and early 60s a lot of you watched the very popular “Gidget” movies. Television, film actor, and TV director James Darren was the star of these films, along with co-star Sandra Dee. He played the part of Moondoggie. James was also in “The Guns of Navarone” and “Because They're Young.” And on TV, he was in “The Time Tunnel” and the police drama “T.J. Hooker.” On WOKY, in the 60s, we were playing his hits “Goodbye Cruel World” and “Her Royal Majesty.”

What happens when a man's creation becomes his agent of destruction? Well, the Modern Prometheus (Brad) finds out when his Frankingstein monster (The Board of Many Things) immediately turns on him as it casts an uncaring eye towards the 1985 Cannon ripoff of Indiana Jones King Solomon's Mines.  Despite being directed by J. Lee Thompson (Cape Fear, Guns of the Navarone, Mackenna's Gold, 10 to Midnight), scored by Jerry Goldsmith (Alien, Patton, Chinatown, Papillon), and starring Richard Chamberlain (The Towering Inferno, The Thorn Birds, Shogun), Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct, The Quick and the Dead, Sliver), and John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Sliders) this movie is a ROUGH ONE. What started as a potentially fun romp turned sour quickly with a sloppy bouillabaisse of tonal whiplash, not-so-casual racism, and BOREDOM. Sean handles the assignment with typical aplomb, but Brad has several nervous breakdowns throughout the course of the episode. This was supposed to be one of the more fun board choices. Navarone Garcia is Priscilla Presley's son. Navarone Garibaldi Garcia (born March 1, 1987) is an American musician who serves as the lead singer of Them Guns. Them Guns is a Los Angeles-based rock band made up of members Garcia (guitar/lead vocals), Kyle Hamood (lead guitar/vocals/keys), Bobby Vega (drums), and Chuck Holiday (bass). Santa Cruz Waves described their sound as "...a rock base, a tinge of surf/ska vocals, and funked out keys, a sound to satisfy the traditional, to alternative, to psychedelic rock music enthusiasts...birthed from the barrels of Them Guns". Navarone Garcia was raised in LA.  He was introduced to drugs and started using at a pretty young age.  He became addicted to fentanyl in 2016.  After getting clean in 2020 and a few relapses in 2022, he is now clean and sober for real.  He is now traveling with Michael Deleon from Steered Straight. He is talking to kids mainly about the danger of fentanyl and helping to raise fentanyl/vaping awareness.  The main point he wants to get across is that there is fentanyl in everything and it doesn't seem to be an accident. It's not like one dealer put fentanyl in their batch and it started killing everybody.. and all the other dealers said GREAT IDEA. It seems planned. Sean is joined by his mate Mark to discuss one of Mark's favourite films: The Guns of Navarone (1961); One of the best adventure films ever made. It gets very philosophical. Discussion Points: -Mark was also introduced to older films by his Dad. -The strength of every single character. -Mark was impressed by the set-up of the film. -The brilliant scene with the exhausted, battered Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Command pilots. -The lack of vilification for those making the difficult, near-impossible decisions in wartime. -The challenge of having morals in war. -The Oscar-winning special effects and how well they hold up. -The personal conflict between the characters, particularly Mallory and Franklin. -Sean's terrible note-taking returns (because he enjoys the film so much). -The myth of the 'clean' Wehrmacht. -The sheer insanity of war and the sheer insanity of trying to apply rules to it. -The iconic traitor scene. -Dispensing with airs and graces in wartime. -Sean prefers matte paintings to terrible CGI. -The best lift scene in cinema. -Surprising Wallace and Gromit trivia. -The bittersweet climax of the film. Raised Questions: -Does your Dad influence your taste in films? -What happened to writing in films? -Why did they 'bin off' the first Director? -Why Stanley Baker took such a small part? -Did you know they cast a pop singer? -Can you win the war but lose yourself in the process? -Can the whole machine function with a faulty piece? -What is one of the most over-used sounds in film history? -Who stepped on the Birthday Cake? -Did you know 'rat' incendiaries were actually used in the Second World War? -Why don't they make films like this anymore? Mark's Recommendations: -Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022). -Pork Chop Hill (1959). Shout-outs: -The Decision Reel podcast. Thanks for Listening! Review It Yourself is now on YouTube! Murder by Decree is a 1979 mystery thriller directed by Bob Clark (Director of ‘Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things' and 'Dead of Night' (not the brilliant black and white British film from 1945 - featured in episode 13, but the 1974 American film ), he also directed ‘Black Christmas', ‘Porkys' and ‘Porkys 2' Murder by Decree was written by playwright John Hopkins, who scripted the Bond film Thunderball, and the Alec Guinness TV version of Smileys People. Hopkins referenced Conan Doyle's work, particularly Holmes' deduction and science skills but downplayed other aspects of the characters, such as Holmes' drug use, in favour of making them more likeable and human.Peter O'Toole was originally cast as Sherlock Holmes, and Sir Laurence Olivier was cast as Dr. Watson. But the two actors had not worked well together in the past, and were unable to overcome their differences for this movie. Rather, Holmes is played by Christopher (Captain Georg von Trapp) Plummer and Dr. Watson is played by James Mason.Plummer, described by IMDB as“ perhaps Canada's greatest thespian”, turned down the role of Gandalf in Sir Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and admits to regretting that decision. Question for James and Jon? Christopher Plummer had two roles in common with Peter Cushing, can you name them?James Mason reportedly, he once saved the life of Max Bygraves' son at a party at Judy Garland's house. The boy fell into the pool and Max did not notice. James Mason did and, fully clothed, he jumped into the water and pulled him out. He was scheduled to play James Bond in a 1958 television adaptation of "From Russia with Love", which was ultimately never produced. Later, despite being in his 50s, Mason was a contender to play Bond in Dr. No before Sean Connery was cast. He later turned down the role of Hugo Drax in the James Bond film Moonraker, which went to Michael Lonsdale. In his autobiography, "In Spite of Myself", Plummer noted that Mason was the best Watson he had seen, and that his death halted a proposed furthering of their on-screen partnership. The film also features:David Hemmings (Blow Up, Deep Red, Brabarella, Gladiator, Magnum Pi and Airwolf) as Inspector Foxborough, Anthony Quayle (Lawrence of Arbia, The Guns of Navarone) as Sir Charles Warren, Frank Finlay (Lifeforce, The Three Musketeers) as Inspector Lestrade, Geneviève Bujold as Annie Crook, Susan Clark as Mary Kelly, John Gielgud as Prime Minister Lord Salisbury, Donald Sutherland as Robert Lees and the Mighty June Brown as Anne ChapmanThe film's premise of the plot behind the murders is influenced by the book Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution, by Stephen Knight, who presumed that the killings were part of a Masonic plot. The original script contained the names of the historical suspects, Sir William Gull and John Netley. In the actual film, they are represented by fictional analogues: Thomas Spivy (Gull) and William Slade (Netley). This theory on the perpetrators of the killings is featured in a number of other Jack the Ripper-themed fictions, including the graphic novel ‘From Hell'.The replica nineteenth century dockland set took two months and fifty men to construct at Shepperton Studio's largest soundstage. The set also included a replica muddy Thames River, Alien was shooting concurrently in the same studios.Support the show by buying from our affiliate links…https://tinyurl.com/Murder-Decree-Blu-rayhttps://tinyurl.com/Murder-Decree-DVDhttps://tinyurl.com/From-Hell-Bookhttps://tinyurl.com/From-Hell-Companion-bookhttps://tinyurl.com/The-Five-Book Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. Hey there listeners. In this episode, we start a mini-series of panels talking about WW II mission movies that inspired my upcoming novel The Last Night to Kill Nazis from Clash books. My novel comes out this summer, during the pre-order period (You can get it from the Clash site, Amazon, Barnes, and Noble, or basically any indie bookstore) we will celebrate by talking about the movies that inspired it. In this episode, I am joined by two old friends. Returning is Marc Rothenberg regular listeners will know him from the annual top reads of the year countdown. My other guest is Devlin McCarthy an old hardcore scene friend who happens to be a nerd for all things World War Two. He was one of the first people I asked to read my novel to vet it for accuracy. We are gathered to talk about the classic WW 2 Mission movies based on the Alister Maclean novels The Guns of Navarone (1961), and Force 10 from Navarone(1978). These movies and the novels were major influences on Last night, my novel includes several easter eggs and direct homages to these movies. We talk about what makes these movies special, break down the elements that make a good mission movie, and give you some background on the creation of them. I will be mixing these episodes in, while still producing my normal programming, but if you are new here and looking for WW 2 film content it is coming. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/
