Chris Smither has been Peter Mulvey's mentor since back in 1993, when the young Mulvey opened for the already seasoned Smither. The blues and folk legend liked what he heard and enjoyed the similarities in creativity and quirks and he took that young man on the road with him. Their musical partnership has crossed paths and outlasted the digital age, the pandemic, parenthood and the indictment of a former president. Along the way each has worked to influence their best habits and life lessons on the other and as far as mentor-mentee relationships go, this one is for the history books. Also there are nods to David 'Goody' Goodrich, Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst and the woman behind it all: Carol Young (aka Smither's long-time manager, aka his wife). In this rare joint interview, we address the important questions: like why do they delight in calling each other by their last names? Smither shares that he was first called by his last name in Paris when he was in school. They debate who has the better hometown: Milwaukee or New Orleans. Actually it's not so much a debate as a reflection on New Orleans music, since that is clearly the better spot to grow up a musician. Mulvey reflects on their musical differences citing some of his main inspirations to be Kendrick Lamar and Ani DiFranco versus Smither's affinity for Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. We break down how each feels about fatherhood and try to get Smither to spill his secret to longevity. Spoiler alert: it's not from remaining still. Chris Smither's 20th album All About the Bones is out now. Peter Mulvey's latest is the acoustic retrospective More Notes From Elsewhere.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? In an engaging dialogue, musician Peter Mulvey is inspired to create a new song after talking with poet Naomi Shehab Nye and exploring the profound impact of art, poetry, and music on human connection. They reflect on their personal experiences, discussing the role of these artistic forms in creating and strengthening bonds between individuals. Highlighting the works of Emily Dickinson and Lorine Niedecker, among others, the conversation underlines the importance of allowing art to transcend definitions and speak directly to the heart. Stories of personal anguish, the quest for originality, and the legacy of past artists underscore the dialogue, emphasizing art's power to resonate on both personal and universal levels. The session reinforces the notion that art and poetry should be accessible, inviting listeners to experience them intuitively rather than analytically. Through personal anecdotes and a shared passion for creativity, the speakers inspire a resolve to continue exploring and contributing to the vast world of artistic expression. Currently tearing it up on the road with Brandi Carlile and Allison Russell, The Ross sister's musical roots began with their intense classical training, family gatherings and in church. All five of their siblings played music, toured around with their minister parents and even had their own family band, Sisters of Praize with older sisters Charice Ross on violin and Rickena Johnson on viola. After Chauntee was done with college, she and Monique teamed up again and ventured out in the Milwaukee music scene where they cut their teeth and tried their hand at all sorts of different styles: hip-hop, jam bands, electronic music and singer-songwriters. There, they met a kindred in Peter Mulvey, who they started performing with in 2016.SistaStrings officially made the move to Nashville in the summer of 2021. Once there, they started playing gigs with Allison Russell. Monique's encounter with Brandi Carlile at Newport Folk Fest, led them to both touring with her band. In our conversation, Lizzie and Cindy talk to Monique and Chuantee about being romantic string players thanks to their classical background, which also gave them a very thick skin. They also talk about the decision to pursue a musical path into the folk and Americana world, which is notoriously a white space. Spoiler alert: it wasn't an easy decision, but it's one they have not come to regret.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Milwaukee-born Peter Mulvey has, along with classical duo SistaStrings, made an anti-fascist record. According to Peter, “to make an anti - fascist record, you must keep kindness and compassion in the foreground.” Love is the Only Thing goes from family, to politics, to family, racism and then back to family. It's as optimistic and introspective as it is filled with "running out a burning building" type of songs. All the while, Peter is joined by powerful, thoughtful and extremely talented musicians in Monique and Chauntee Ross.Lots has happened in Peter's life since his last album. He moved to New England, fell in love and got married, A PANDEMIC, and he's become a father. All these eek their way into songs on the new album. A particularly poignant song is the co-write with his partner about their possible future as parents (good luck not crying to all the parents out there!). Don't worry if you didn't catch all the buddhist references, we talk about each one in finite detail. Enjoy!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Celebrate 15 years Live Music Saturdays in Summer – Berkshire Busk! Roadside From Memorial Day through Labor Day, BMD will host Berkshire Busk! Roadside a satellite stage next to our outdoor pavilion in Sheffield. Saturday Afternoon, June 4th: 2:30 - 4:30 PM Dylan Patrick Ward Don't let his roughish good-looks fool you. Dylan Patrick Ward is a sensitive boy. Hailing from Vermont's Dirty South, he started self-recording and releasing lofi Indie-Folk albums from his childhood bedroom at his parent's house in 2020. Now he plays anywhere he can and continues to write darkly comical, melodic songs about down-on-their-luck loveable losers that owe a debt to the Mountain Goats, John Prine, George Saunders and The Simpsons. He's opened for acclaimed folk singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey who said "...he's funny. He's also as serious as an axe-handle." Musicians will take the stage for Live Music Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., rain or shine. Entertainment accompanied by craft cocktails served from our outdoor bar featuring BMD's Cultural Cocktails program. Berkshire Mountain Distillers, a community-focused business in support of regional ingredients and the Berkshires' first legal distillery since prohibition, will commemorate its 15-year anniversary this year with a series of programs and events. BMD began on an old apple farm in Sheffield, a right-to-farm village in the southwest corner of Massachusetts known for endless rows of corn and Revolutionary-era uprisings. In 2007, Chris Weld founded BMD on this simple farmstead on East Mountain, at the former site of granite-based Berkshire Sodium Springs, circa 1900. Water from these pristine springs is still used in formulating our products joining other locally sourced high-quality ingredients to produce one-of-a-kind Berkshire spirits. In 2014, BMD moved to a new production facility in Sheffield where our hometown team continues the handcrafted spirit-making tradition with great passion for the art and science of beverage-making. We support local businesses and community-based non-profit organizations, and are excited to welcome visitors to our production facility, tasting room, store and greenhouse, plus our new covered outdoor pavilion surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire landscape. Come visit!

Over the course of his 30-year music career, Peter Mulvey has released more than 20 albums, written hundreds of songs, played thousands of shows all over the world, shared bills with a wealth of notable performers and helped to enact change though his efforts as an activist and environmentalist. Before the Massachusetts-based singer and songwriter was gathering experiences and sharing his perspective with audiences spread far and wide, he was a theater kid growing up in Milwaukee. Prior to setting out on the road for a run of Midwestern shows (including a homecoming concert at The Back Room @ Colectivo on Feb. 17), Mulvey told My First Band host Tyler Maas about growing up on Milwaukee's northwest side, starting a band while attending college at Marquette, changing his artistic trajectory after busking in Ireland during a semester abroad, starting out in the Boston folk scene, the ups and downs of touring, and some of the standout experiences from the past 30 years. Along the way, Mulvey and Maas gush about how much they both like SistaStrings. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and Peter Mulvey with SistaStrings ("Don't You Ever Change").

Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter, road-dog, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Nineteen records, an illustrated book, thousands of live performances, a TEDx talk, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp, opening for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco, Emmylou Harris, and Chuck Prophet, appearances on NPR, an annual autumn tour by bicycle, emceeing festivals, hosting his own boutique festival (the Lamplighter Sessions, in Boston and Wisconsin)… Mulvey never stops. He has built his life's work on collaboration and an instinct for the eclectic and the vital. He folds everything he encounters into his work: poetry, social justice, scientific literacy, & a deeply abiding humanism are all on plain display in his art. www.petermulvey.comPeter's Patreon PageThis episode was recorded on April 12, 2021.Follow on Instagram - @fiveauthorquestions Follow on Twitter - @5AQpodEmail 5AQ - podcasts@kpl.gov 5AQ is produced by Jarrod Wilson. Like stumbling into a rose garden on a trek through the arctic, listeners of Emily Anderson’s music find themselves helplessly lifted into a world so hauntingly familiar, and yet so enchantingly curious. Anderson’s music is as shaped by this whimsical perspective as it is by her musical credentials. A multi-instrumentalist trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Anderson fills her songs with images of nature, hope, and the solar system, not to mention a few puns. Anderson hails from Fairbanks, Alaska, and now splits her time between her hometown and Los Angeles. Her upbringing in a tight-knit community has shared her musical perspective. One radio reviewer remarked of her 2017 full-length album Simple Things, “Emily Anderson’s music shatters the imagery you might have of surviving the long dark winters while living in Fairbanks, AK. One might expect dark introspection or a songwriter who bites back at life, but the songs on Simple Things are warm and emotive.”In recent years, Anderson has lent her skills to video games and game trailers Calico and The Stars Between Us, and shared bills with Danielle Ate the Sandwich, Peter Mulvey, and Aurora Birch. She’s toured across Alaska, the west coast, and Canada. She has also released three new singles, “Sarah,” “Gold,” and, on February 5, 2021, “Hugs.” The second, “Gold,” has been placed in a national ad campaign with Miller Lite, and was a finalist in both the American Songwriter and Songwriting University Song Contests. These songs, which tackle subjects like grief, mental illness, friendship, and pandemic isolation, are optimistic as well as raw. Anderson’s music reflects her determination to find light in tough times.https://emilyandersonak.com/

I interviewed singer/songwriter Peter Mulvey for this podcast, but also for my political podcast, called Estate Sale. You can hear our more political conversation https://player.captivate.fm/episode/4ac6c733-14bb-4ad7-bd74-57b8253c38c1 (in that episode). But for our purposes, I wanted to talk about music and songwriting. Peter is a prolific songwriter, bicycle enthusiast, social activist, and has one of the more compelling voices you will hear. In addition, he is just a blast to chat with, as I think you will hear. We talk about the pandemic, continue the discussion on political songs we started in that political podcast, and then cover his influences and favorite musicians. You can find more about his music, patreon page, videos, and activism at his https://www.petermulvey.com/ (website).

Hi, Brad here. In addition to co-hosting Estate Sale with Laurie, I also produce a music podcast called https://feeds.captivate.fm/music-at-three-pines/ (Music at Three Pines: The Podcast), where I interview musicians about their craft. Most of those interviewed come from the folk tradition, which as you know, has deep political roots through Rhiannon Giddens, Bob Dylan, and Woody Guthrie. One example, is singer/songwriter Peter Mulvey, who has always been a strong social activist through his music. We talk about the pandemic, the state of the campaign, and along the way, introduce you to some of Peter's music. Hope you enjoy the conversation, and also hope you will visit Peter's https://www.petermulvey.com/ (webpage) for more information on his music and activism.

To learn more and watch the video from this live session, please visit truefire.com/live.About Peter:Peter Mulvey has been a songwriter, road-dog, raconteur and almost-poet since before he can remember. Raised working-class Catholic on the Northwest side of Milwaukee, he took a semester in Ireland, and immediately began cutting classes to busk on Grafton Street in Dublin and hitchhike through the country, finding whatever gigs he could. Back stateside, he spent a couple years gigging in the Midwest before lighting out for Boston, where he returned to busking (this time in the subway) and coffeehouses. Small shows led to larger shows, which eventually led to regional and then national and international touring. The wheels have not stopped since.Eighteen records, one illustrated book, thousands of live performances, a TEDx talk, a decades-long association with the National Youth Science Camp, opening for luminaries such as Ani DiFranco, Emmylou Harris, and Chuck Prophet, appearances on NPR, an annual autumn tour by bicycle, emceeing festivals, hosting his own boutique festival (the Lamplighter Sessions, in Boston and Wisconsin)… Mulvey never stops. He has built his life’s work on collaboration and on an instinct for the eclectic and the vital. He folds everything he encounters into his work: poetry, social justice, scientific literacy, and a deeply abiding humanism are all on plain display in his art.Early in 2017, a series of upheavals found Mulvey living through a winter in a friend’s empty house in the small Midwestern town of Fort Atkinson. Unmoored and lost in the middle of his life, walking hours each day, sometimes with friends but most often alone, along the frozen marsh of the Bark river and through the wintry oak savannah nearby. The songs came in fast and strange and vivid. At night he wrote them down at a table in the spare house, just a mile from the Cafe Carpe (which Mulvey describes as his spiritual home). These songs became his new record, “There Is Another World,” a vivid dreamscape of imagistic, haiku-like auditory sketches, within which are plenty of wrenching, haunting, and even sweet songs.

Musings with Montse: Artists and Their (Honest) Stories

Peter Mulvey is a folk singer-songwriter and all around wonderful human. He is a deeply curious person who loves poetry, so I already knew we’d be fast friends and have a lot to talk about! We got a chance to sit down together in San Francisco, and we cover a lot of ground during this conversation. He tells us about a time he was living alone in an empty house in a little town, and the profound encounter with a fox he had during that time that led to beautiful lyrics. He talks about the important distinction between solitude and isolation, and I love how he unpacks the feeling of grief. He talks about what tools have helped him get through darker times, including being as he describes a “very persistent half-assed meditator”, nature, community, and looking after other people. I’d like to add an exclamation point on that last bit: if you’re going through a hard time, I can’t emphasize enough how useful it is to do something - however small - to make someone else feel better when you’re down. When I’m going through it, this is the one thing that consistently helps me get out of a funk. And I was happy to hear Peter say it too. He also tells us some of the writers and musicians whose creativity moves him. And wow - I got goosebumps all over when he describes his favorite memory – it’s a good one. Everyone I know who is friends with Peter says he’s one of the best humans they know, and I can see why. **Where to find Peter: ** Instagram Website This episode was audio produced by Aaron Morning. Peter Mulvey's music is emotional, rousing, gritty and real. The Milwaukee singer-songwriter has been at it since the late 1980's playing in the streets of Dublin and Boston before starting his career proper in the early 1990's. Mulvey's upbringing was with liberal parents who are in love with science and activism and fully supported their son's early interest in acting and then in music. His latest album, There Is Another World, was born out of giant life changes and upheavals.
