The annual cycle Torah reading for this week is parsha "Chukat," Numbers chapters 19 through 21) and it contains what is sometimes called the most enigmatic "chuq" (or, "do this because He says so") in the Torah: the Red Heiffer, or parah adumah. Even Solomon is thought to have said he just didn't quite get it. But, even more interesting, what might be the SECOND most mysterious 'chuq' in the Torah is in this same parsha! The "bronze serpent" (but the Hebrew term is much more alliterative: 'nachash nachoshet') - aka the 'snake on a stick.' There is a common thread that runs through this entire portion, too. Actually, several, but all evidently related: Death. And some important numbers. And water, in multiple ways, and 'salvation.' But still one more that Mark suggests, which may even help explain some of the confusion, is "I blame Moses." A young couple's giddy delight in each other at the wedding altar is completely understandable. Months of shared memories and reverent promises have propelled them to this moment—along with a surge of powerful biochemicals. Nothing could be more natural. A young soldier's deep loyalty to the men who have battled alongside him, guarded his back, and rescued him in deepest danger is completely understandable. We were designed to show love back to those who first loved us. But what explains God's deep and fervent affection for millions of human beings who have never warmed to His attention, trusted in His promises, or appreciated His vigilant protection? There's nothing natural—or understandable—about it. God chooses of His own marvelous free will to love those who ignore Him, seek those who consistently disobey His rules, and embrace those who crucified His Son. “In this is love, not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:20). “This is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Receiving the gift of God's persistent grace doesn't mean that we can ever fully explain it or understand it. But go ahead: embrace the mystery. And stay in grace. -Bill Knott

Do you love a good mystery? In Ephesians 3 we discover a mystery story like no other. There is a hero (Jesus), a villain (Satan), a crime (sin), a tragedy (condemnation), and a punishment and a resurrection (the Cross) ... and that's only the beginning of the story.

In this podcast, Eckhart talks about the awakening universe. He says the great miracle and the mystery is that the universe is conscious. In fact, Eckhart explains it is a manifestation of consciousness itself and we are part of that. Eckhart explains there are millions and billions of other life forms across the galaxies, but here on earth the universe expresses consciousness through us. He believes as we grow in awareness, we let go of the limitations of the ego – we discover we are more than a person with a personality. Ultimately, he says we learn to see others just as ourselves which in Eastern traditions is called meta in the west it's called love.
