The Celtic Soul podcast returns for the first episode of 2025 and host More than 90 Minutes Editor, Andrew Milne welcomes back Alternative View Editor, Matt McGlone to chat about all things Celtic. The Bhoys look back on 2024 through green tinted glasses and talk about recent games over the festive period and look ahead to upcoming fixtures both in Scotland and Europe. They chat about former players and recount famous Celtic away days from Milan and Kiev and meeting former players from meeting members of the Lisbon Lions in Glasgow pubs to sharing the stage interviewing many Celtic greats. They address the need for Celtic to introduce a resale ticket system for season book holders to allow empty seats to be full on all match days and to give more people the chance to enjoy a game at Paradise. Listen to how Matt ended up with one of Mo Johnston's boots from Love Street in 1986 and then blanking him at a petrol station in Glasgow when he done the unforgivable and crossed the city for 30 pieces of silver and he will forever be known now as Judas. A final hurrah for Liverpool, a surprising challenge from Villa Park that earns Graham Taylor the England job, Rangers march on under Graeme Souness while stealing the signature of Mo Johnston from under Celtic's nose, the outcome of the Taylor Report: the 1990s splutters into life, trying to create its own atmosphere.
Judas Part 1Another tale from the Celtic WikiFor Celts of a certain age, there is not a name that illicits greater emotion than Mo Johnston. Signed in a record deal in October 1984 he was part of a Celtic forward line that should have achieved even more than it did and during that spell. He completed perhaps the greatest team goal in Celtic's history in the 5-0 title triumph at Love Street. He left but was set to return in a dramatic move in 1989 as Celtic set to try and wrestle the initiative back from Rangers. The rest, as they say, is history.Enjoy… This is a public episode. This week's interview series episode was a reunion for Jimmy Brennan and Craig Forrest, as former Toronto FC goalkeeper Greg Sutton joined his old CanMNT teammates, James Sharman and Brendan Dunlop. They laughed about some of the early days at TFC, described what it was like to play for Mo Johnston, and just how bad it was to play on that OG turf, each and every day. Now the master coach of both the men's and women's teams at Concordia University, Sutton tells the crew about the depth of talent playing in Quebec, how the pathway to the CPL has kept players home instead of heading south chasing NCAA opportunities, and what it was like working with Jesse Marsch at the Montreal Impact.
His nickname isn't "JFR" for no reason, it's earned. The Sporting KC captain is passionate & fiery. He knows his teammates, coaches, and the fans, all expect this from him. We sat down with Johnny Russell this week to talk about that passion, a frustrating season, and of course... cars. The 32-year-old Scotsman had just got off the treatment table after getting some work done for an "ongoing hamstring problem". But that kind of work is common and he says it's nothing that's holding him back right now. I'd make sure to get the most out of the incredible facilities at Pinnacle as I could, as well. We asked Johnny if he feels like SKC is headed in the right direction after showing signs of life in the 2-2 draw with FC Dallas. "We haven't reached the standards we set last year," he says. "We know that ourselves." Russell is well aware he just hit #5 on Sporting KC's all-time scoring leader charts. He even says he's set "targets" for himself, the first of which was his friend Mo Johnston. Johnny plans to keep climbing the ranks in KC with an eye on Preki at the top. With Alan Pulido out, he's taken over penalty kick duties. He gives us some cool insight into reading keepers and his PK tactics. A few weeks ago after a match, Russell went into the stands and confronted a fan. But after scoring last week, he celebrated in that very spot and once again made peace after the match. "JFR" says he heard some things he didn't like that were directed at his teammates. Things that went beyond criticism, which he says they deserved that night. "I didn't like it. I lost my cool in that moment." We also reminisce about other times he fiercely defended his teammates. Remember the Vancouver Whitecaps getting double red cards? Without Gadi Kinda and a #10, Peter Vermes says the front line has slowly been learning to adapt to a different look in the midfield. Johnny tells how he and Daniel Salloi are working to find space in the final third and create chances. Finally, we get to one of Johnny Russell's favorite things about the US. American muscle cars. He tells us which teammates drive cool cars and that one of them just got rear-ended. And what is JFR's dream car? Just call him 'Russell... Johnny Russell'. Learn more about your ad choices. Shaughan McGuigan joins Craig Anderson to talk over Scotland's massive 1-0 victory in Vienna and sing the praises of, well, more or less everyone. They discuss why Steve Clarke's side are a confusing team to work out and plot the path to World Cup qualification. The boys then cover the latest in our list of memorable Scotland matches, a 3-1 victory over Spain in 1984. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Craig Brown, the last man to guide Scotland to a World Cup finals in 1998, relives some of his football highs and lows. His bittersweet memories of the game include the famous World Cup campaign in France, and coaching Scotland under 21 teams to victory. However, he tells host Kevan Christie that in Glasgow you're either green or you're blue and how he felt the fans and the media's gaze - especially when he became embroiled in a defamation case with the now defunct News of the World. Celtic Soul Podcast Episode 52 with More than 90 Minutes, Editor Andrew Milne chatting to Paul McQuadePaul McQuade is the Editor of the Shamrock Fanzine. He is also the man behind the Walfrid Walking Tours and is one of the founding members of the Celtic Graves Association. He has written three books on Celtic, Said Lizzy To Philip How Celtic Gate Crashed the Coronation, This Is How it Feels to be Celtic an account of the Invincible Season and a book of Celtic Quotes. He is currently writing a biography of Johnny Doyle.Paul and Andrew chat about the current situation at Celtic while Paul reflects back on his formative years growing up and starting on his Celtic supporting journey. Johnny Doyle died on his 11th birthday and he now finds himself writing a biography of the player. As a youngster he waited outside the stadium to get Mo Johnston's autograph, he has no plans to write a book on him.His love of Celtic and Celtic's history started at a young age when he was gifted a collection of books on Celtic and started to travel on supporters buses. He chats about selling Not the View during his University years in Edinburgh and the story telling that he has enjoyed from fellow Celtic supporters over the years. The 90's may have been bad but you have to chuckle when he mentions Tony Mowbray's testimonial when we were singing “Always look on the bright side of life”. A Monty Python moment!Player recruitment and the policy of interference going back to Gordon Strachan's time as manager get questioned and the fans stories of buses and away trips to Europe which may well lead to a book, Paul recounts stories like the bus that crossed the Alps from Turin after the windows were put in and takes us right back to the Celtic Brake Clubs who were the originators of Football Away Days. Like his pal, Brendan Sweeney, Paul's research for his books is amazing and that shines through in this conversation with his knowledge and love of Celtic. Both Paul and Brendan are just two of the founding members of the Celtic Graves Association and it was great to see how it came about and the work they and the other volunteers have done since then and the famous names they have honoured and remembered. Paul also takes us on a Virtual Walfrid Walking Tour starting at Celtic Park which leads us then through the streets of the East End of Glasgow from the 1870's onwards which is a fascinating listen. It's the day of reckoning for Scotland and Jim Leighton who are looking for a big result to keep them in the tournament. They take on Brazil who are essentially a sexier Ireland. And we finally get an answer on whether Muller or Mo Johnston are the world's number 1 striker... (it's neither). Meanwhile underdog's Costa Rica are up against a disappointing Sweden side in a game which inspires some Roy Keane-esc disgust in goalkeepers from one of our panel. There's further reactions to the Dunphy - Jack Charlton fallout and similar levels of vitriol from Dublin street traders to the new one pound coin. Krys and Good John are joined by John Hughes, aka Yogi, a man of many clubs as both player and manager. We start off by talking about Ann Budge's proposal for a 14-14-14. Is this prospect doomed with a number of clubs publicly objecting before discussions take place next week? Yogi then talks us through his playing career, which began at the humble surroundings of Newtongrange Star and Berwick Rangers. After a brief stint at Swansea, he made his name with Falkirk under Jim Jeffries in a five year spell that saw two promotions and a Challenge Cup success. His performances earned him a move to Celtic under Tommy Burns for just under 18 months before moving onto boyhood team Hibs then Ayr United. As he was winding his playing career back at Falkirk, Yogi then became Manager at the club, taking them into a five year stay in the top flight and a Scottish Cup Final in 2009. He then had just over a year at Hibs and then short stints at Livingston and Hartlepool before moving to Inverness in 2014. It was in the Highlands he enjoyed, arguably, his best success, winning the Scottish Cup and finishing third in 2014/15, thus winning Manager of the Year. This podcast is a joy from the start as Yogi reminisces over his career where he's played alongside some of the games best characters from Simon Stainrod to John Collins, from Mo Johnston to Russell Latapy. His passion for the game is there for all to see. We hope he's back in the game soon, maybe even in Perth.

This week St Anthony is joined by a Celtic star whom Saint would put into a list of potential all time great Celtic strikers - Mr Frank McGarvey. Most will know that Frank began his career very succesfully at St Mirren before, in May 1979, McGarvey signed for Liverpool for £270,000. However, his tenure with the club lasted only 10 months. Unable to breakthrough into the first team, McGarvey sought a transfer. Liverpool accepted a bid of £270,000 by Celtic in March 1980, and for a short time McGarvey became Scotland's most expensive footballer. McGarvey played 245 times for Celtic over five years, scoring 113 goals. In that time he won two League Championships, two Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup. However, Celtic manager David Hay decided Mo Johnston and Brian McClair would be his forward line for the 1985–86 season and declined to offer McGarvey an extended contract. His final, and perhaps most notable act as a Celtic player, was to score the winning goal six minutes from the end of the 1985 Scottish Cup Final. In June 1985 McGarvey rejoined St. Mirren for £80,000. Two years later, he won a third Scottish Cup with them. In total he played 387 times for St Mirren, scoring 125 goals. Later in his career, McGarvey had spells with Queen of the South (where he was player-manager), Clyde (with which he won a Second Division Championship title at the age of 37) and Shotts Bon Accord. Having retired from the game before footballers began earning high salaries (he notes that he "took home £190 a week after tax" while playing for Celtic) McGarvey now works as a joiner. In 2008, McGarvey wrote an autobiography called Totally Frank in which he described the highs and lows of his career and revealed how he overcame a long-time gambling addiction
In the summer of 1989, the Catholic striker, Mo Johnston, shocked Scotland by crossing the sectarian divide in Glasgow and signing for the traditionally Protestant club, Rangers. This week the Aborigine Australian Rules star Adam Goodes, decided against walking away from the game he loves, having endured weeks of racial abuse at the hands of some opposing fans. It’s not the first time that the sport has been at the forefront of the countries debate on integration. In 1993, whilst playing for St Kilda, Nicky Winmar responded to similar racial abuse by raising his shirt and pointing to his skin. The photograph is an iconic image in Australian sporting history. But has anything really changed in those 22 years? Don’t Ban Drugs… Embrace Them! With more allegations and strenuous denials dominating the world of athletics, we ask if sport would be better off if performance enhancing drugs were regulated, as opposed to banned.
