Reading 1Acts 13:14, 43-52Paul and Barnabas continued on from Pergaand reached Antioch in Pisidia. On the sabbath they entered the synagogue and took their seats. Many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaismfollowed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to themand urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God.On the following sabbath almost the whole city gatheredto hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousyand with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said,“It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject itand condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life,we now turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us,I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvationto the ends of the earth.”The Gentiles were delighted when they heard thisand glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, and the word of the Lord continued to spreadthrough the whole region. The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipersand the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them, and went to Iconium. The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.Reading 2Revelation 7:9, 14b-17I, John, had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. Then one of the elders said to me,“These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress;they have washed their robesand made them white in the blood of the Lamb.“For this reason they stand before God's throneand worship him day and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them. For the Lamb who is in the center of the thronewill shepherd themand lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”GospelJohn 10:27-30Jesus said:“My sheep hear my voice;I know them, and they follow me.I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all,and no one can take them out of the Father's hand. The Father and I are one.”

It's no secret that the alternative protein startups are struggling these days. A combination of lower revenue, intense competition, and less available venture capital is leading to a contraction in the sector, with countless alt-meat and dairy companies conducting layoffs, declaring bankruptcy, and even folding altogether.  Enter Ahimsa Companies, a newly formed investment group acquiring promising but distressed plant-based brands. This isn't charity, though. Ahimsa's belief is that, with their consolidation strategy and pooled resources, these brands that are built on a strong underlying product can become profitable under the Ahimsa umbrella. As Ahimsa CEO Matt Tullman says in this conversation, pendulums swing, and many of these companies can be brought to profitability, meaning they could ultimately be sold at a much higher price than their valuation during this period in which plant-based products are in the valley. So far the company has acquired Wicked Foods, Simulate's Nuggs, Blackbird Pizza, an Ohio plant-based foods manufacturing plant, and more.  Matt is a man of many talents, as you'll hear in this episode. In addition to being CEO of Ahimsa Companies, he founded and sold his own education tech company, and is also the co-founder and CEO of Outlier Health, the parent company of supplement company Complement and of No Meat Athlete. He's both a missionary for plant-based lifestyles and a mercenary seeking to combine his passion for plant-based foods with profit.  Discussed in this episode Ahimsa Companies is looking for plant-based startups to acquire. Here's an analysis of their strategy and history. Interview with Matt in which he describes Ahimsa's goal by declaring that “we've got to step up and try to help these companies survive.” Story about Ahimsa's acquisition of the Plant Plant in Ohio.  Both Paul and Matt are interested in AI's potential to enable human-nonhuman communication, something Noa Weiss discussed on a past episode. Matt recommends reading both The Hard Thing about Hard Things and The Surrender Experiment. Matt also recommends Paul Graham's essay, Do Things That Don't Scale. More about Matt Tullman Matt is the co-founder and Group CEO of the Ahimsa Companies – a private equity firm acquiring and operating best-in-class plant-based food and manufacturing companies. He is also the co-founder and CEO of Outlier Health, the parent company of  Complement and No Meat Athlete, which have served nearly 13 million people just in the past three years. He's also an investor in health/food/bev startups, and a contributor to Inc. Magazine.  Previously Matt founded a ed-tech firm that was ultimately acquired by Stride Education (NYSE: LRN). Matt is most proud of bootstrapping a business that was named to the Inc. 500 list of fastest growing companies in 2021. He has dedicated his career to growing nutrition-first health companies to help catalyze the movement to a plant-based lifestyle for the mainstream consumer.

Send us a textIn this episode, we follow up on our last episode where we concluded with the fact that God is the Author and Determiner of morality. Arnie and Fred begin by noting that moral character is unique to mankind. We discuss the human spirit which was created by God when He created mankind in His image. We look at several passages in Genesis which tell us this. Jesus notes that God is a Spirit which identifies us as spiritual beings as Moses said, made in His image. Both Paul and Peter discuss our conscience which functions as our moral compass if we listen to it properly. We look at what Paul says about the possibility of searing our conscience to the point it is desensitized and doesn't work as God intended. We note that morality is universally applicable. God is no respecter of persons. His moral requirements apply to all countries and people who live in them. We close out this episode by noting that immorality is the same as sin. We will begin our next episode by a fuller discussion of this fact. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. Scripture Reading: Acts 13:13-52 13:13 Then Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia, but John left them and returned to Jerusalem. 13:14 Moving on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. 13:15 After the reading from the law and the prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, “Brothers, if you have any message of exhortation for the people, speak it.” 13:16 So Paul stood up, gestured with his hand and said, “Men of Israel, and you Gentiles who fear God, listen: 13:17 The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay as foreigners in the country of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. 13:18 For a period of about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. 13:19 After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave his people their land as an inheritance. 13:20 All this took about four hundred fifty years. After this he gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. 13:21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty years. 13:22 After removing him, God raised up David their king. He testified about him: ‘I have found David the son of Jesse to be a man after my heart, who will accomplish everything I want him to do.' 13:23 From the descendants of this man God brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, just as he promised. 13:24 Before Jesus arrived, John had proclaimed a baptism for repentance to all the people of Israel. 13:25 But while John was completing his mission, he said repeatedly, ‘What do you think I am? I am not he. But look, one is coming after me. I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet!' 13:26 Brothers, descendants of Abraham's family, and those Gentiles among you who fear God, the message of this salvation has been sent to us. 13:27 For the people who live in Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize him, and they fulfilled the sayings of the prophets that are read every Sabbath by condemning him. 13:28 Though they found no basis for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 13:29 When they had accomplished everything that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb. 13:30 But God raised him from the dead, 13:31 and for many days he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are now his witnesses to the people. 13:32 And we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors, 13:33 that this promise God has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm, ‘You are my Son; today I have fathered you.' 13:34 But regarding the fact that he has raised Jesus from the dead, never again to be in a state of decay, God has spoken in this way: ‘I will give you the holy and trustworthy promises made to David.' 13:35 Therefore he also says in another psalm, ‘You will not permit your Holy One to experience decay.' 13:36 For David, after he had served God's purpose in his own generation, died, was buried with his ancestors, and experienced decay, 13:37 but the one whom God raised up did not experience decay. 13:38 Therefore let it be known to you, brothers, that through this one forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, 13:39 and by this one everyone who believes is justified from everything from which the law of Moses could not justify you. 13:40 Watch out, then, that what is spoken about by the prophets does not happen to you: 13:41 ‘Look, you scoffers; be amazed and perish! For I am doing a work in your days, a work you would never believe, even if someone tells you.' ” 13:42 As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people were urging them to speak about these things on the next Sabbath. 13:43 When the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who were speaking with them and were persuading them to continue in the grace of God. 13:44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city assembled together to hear the word of the Lord. 13:45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and they began to contradict what Paul was saying by reviling him. 13:46 Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, “It was necessary to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we are turning to the Gentiles. 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘I have appointed you to be a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth.' ” 13:48 When the Gentiles heard this, they began to rejoice and praise the word of the Lord, and all who had been appointed for eternal life believed. 13:49 So the word of the Lord was spreading through the entire region. 13:50 But the Jews incited the God-fearing women of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out of their region. 13:51 So after they shook the dust off their feet in protest against them, they went to Iconium. 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.OutlinePaul's Speech at the SynagogueA message of exhortation for the peopleHear me Men of Israel, and Gentile God FearersThe God of Israel chose our ancestorsGod made the people great in Egypt and led them outGod endured the people in the wildernessGod gave the people the landGod gave the people judgesGod gave the people a kingGod removed the bad king (Saul) and gave the people a good king (David)From the David came Jesus the SaviorJohn the Baptist announced repentance and JesusLike the prophets predicted, the people did not recognize Jesus and killed himJesus was crucified, buried, and then appeared to manySo, “we proclaim to you the good news about the promise to our ancestors,” the promise has been fulfilledThe Son shall never see decayThrough the Son there is forgiveness of sinsThrough the Son there is the justification the law of Moses could not bringSo, do not scoff and believeFrom the Law to the MessiahWith minor modifications, the explanations below come from Jason A. Staples' Paul and the Resurrection of Israel: Jews, Former Gentiles, Israelites. The law (Torah) was never going to work—it was never going to be followedDeuteronomy 31:16–1831:16 Then the LORD said to Moses, “You are about to die, and then these people will begin to prostitute themselves with the foreign gods of the land into which they are going. They will reject me and break my covenant that I have made with them. 31:17 At that time my anger will erupt against them and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome them so that they will say at that time, ‘Have not these disasters overcome us because our God is not among us?' 31:18 But I will certainly hide myself at that time because of all the wickedness they will have done by turning to other gods.Deuteronomy 31:24–3031:24 When Moses finished writing on a scroll the words of this law in their entirety, 31:25 he commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the LORD's covenant, 31:26 “Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God. It will remain there as a witness against you, 31:27 for I know about your rebellion and stubbornness. Indeed, even while I have been living among you to this very day, you have rebelled against the LORD; you will be even more rebellious after my death! 31:28 Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them. 31:29 For I know that after I die you will totally corrupt yourselves and turn away from the path I have commanded you to walk. Disaster will confront you in the days to come because you will act wickedly before the LORD, inciting him to anger because of your actions.” 31:30 Then Moses recited the words of this song from start to finish in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel. Deuteronomy 30:1–630:1 “When you have experienced all these things, both the blessings and the curses I have set before you, you will reflect upon them in all the nations where the LORD your God has banished you. 30:2 Then if you and your descendants turn to the LORD your God and obey him with your whole mind and being just as I am commanding you today, 30:3 the LORD your God will reverse your captivity and have pity on you. He will turn and gather you from all the peoples among whom he has scattered you. 30:4 Even if your exiles are in the most distant land, from there the LORD your God will gather you and bring you back. 30:5 Then he will bring you to the land your ancestors possessed and you also will possess it; he will do better for you and multiply you more than he did your ancestors. 30:6 The LORD your God will also cleanse your heart and the hearts of your descendants so that you may love him with all your mind and being and so that you may live.A new covenant is comingJeremiah 31:31–34.31:31 “Indeed, a time is coming,” says the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 31:32 It will not be like the old covenant that I made with their ancestors when I delivered them from Egypt. For they violated that covenant, even though I was like a faithful husband to them,” says the LORD. 31:33 “But I will make a new covenant with the whole nation of Israel after I plant them back in the land,” says the LORD. “I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts and minds. I will be their God and they will be my people. 31:34 “People will no longer need to teach their neighbors and relatives to know me. For all of them, from the least important to the most important, will know me,” says the LORD. “For I will forgive their sin and will no longer call to mind the wrong they have done.”This passage presumes the following three premises:(1) Israel's covenantal infidelity: The passage explicitly states that the reason a new covenant is needed is that Israel has broken the covenant made at the exodus from Egypt through infidelity and injustice.(2) The curse of the covenant: Israel consequently no longer stands in a relationship of covenantal favor with YHWH. This is made explicit in Hosea.Hosea 1:9Then the LORD said: “Name him ‘Not My People' (Lo-Ammi), because you are not my people and I am not your God.”Like the other nations, Israel now stands under God's wrath rather than under covenantal favor until the covenant is renewed.(3) Future restoration: YHWH will nevertheless renew his covenant with Israel and Judah, reelecting and readopting Israel as his people and restoring them to covenantal relationship and favor: “I will be their God and they will be my people” (Jer 31:33).God promises not only to return and restore Israel but also to rectify the root cause of Israel's present plight: the infidelity and injustice that brought Israel under the covenantal curse in the first place. That is, whereas the broken covenant had been contingent on Israel's obedience to external written instructions (Torah), the new covenant will involve YHWH writing his Torah on the heart of Israel, who will then naturally fulfill the parameters of the covenant.Of course, while the specific language and imagery of the new covenant prophecy is unique, the idea that Israel's restoration will be accompanied by Israel's transformation into a just people is by no means unusual in the prophets. On the contrary, it is a biblical commonplace that since Israel's exile was the result of Israel's infidelity, Israel's restoration will necessarily involve renewed fidelity and righteousness. Restated in more familiar Pauline vernacular, Israel's restoration requires Israel's justification—that is, for Israel to be restored, Israel must become a righteous people who live according to YHWH's stipulations. This ethical transformation will then ensure that the restoration is permanent, a sentiment reflected in the prophetic declaration, “Your people shall all be righteous; they shall possess the land forever” (Isa 60:21).The new covenant shall come about by divine transformation—new heartsEzekiel 11:17–2111:17 “Therefore say: ‘This is what the sovereign LORD says: When I regather you from the peoples and assemble you from the lands where you have been dispersed, I will give you back the country of Israel.' 11:18 “When they return to it, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations. 11:19 I will give them one heart and I will put a new spirit within them; I will remove the hearts of stone from their bodies and I will give them tender hearts, 11:20 so that they may follow my statutes and observe my regulations and carry them out. Then they will be my people, and I will be their God. 11:21 But those whose hearts are devoted to detestable things and abominations, I hereby repay them for what they have done, says the sovereign LORD.” Ezekiel 36:24–3136:24 “ ‘I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries; then I will bring you to your land. 36:25 I will sprinkle you with pure water and you will be clean from all your impurities. I will purify you from all your idols. 36:26 I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh. 36:27 I will put my Spirit within you; I will take the initiative and you will obey my statutes and carefully observe my regulations. 36:28 Then you will live in the land I gave to your fathers; you will be my people, and I will be your God. 36:29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and multiply it; I will not bring a famine on you. 36:30 I will multiply the fruit of the trees and the produce of the fields, so that you will never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. 36:31 Then you will remember your evil behavior and your deeds which were not good; you will loathe yourselves on account of your sins and your abominable deeds.2 Corinthians 3:1–63:1 Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? We don't need letters of recommendation to you or from you as some other people do, do we? 3:2 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone, 3:3 revealing that you are a letter of Christ, delivered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on stone tablets but on tablets of human hearts. 3:4 Now we have such confidence in God through Christ. 3:5 Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as if it were coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, 3:6 who made us adequate to be servants of a new covenant not based on the letter but on the Spirit, for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.Paul emphasizes divine transformative activity in 2 Corinthians 3, where he explains that Messiah has written on the Corinthians themselves, “not with ink but with the spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts” (3:3). They have thereby been incorporated in “a new covenant, not of the letter but of the spirit—for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life” (3:6). This passage is especially important not only because it explicitly invokes the new covenant and heart transformation of Jeremiah 31 but also because it reveals how Paul links that promise with Ezekiel's declaration that YHWH would “give you a new heart and a new spirit” (Ezekiel 11:19; 36:26), connecting the new covenant with the spirit language that so permeates the Pauline epistles.Remarkably, the prevalence of these very concepts of spirit, heart transformation, justification by grace, and new creation in the Pauline epistles have frequently been understood as evidence that Paul has departed from a traditional Jewish covenantal framework. This is a puzzling claim in light of other early Jewish evidence that strongly associates the reception of the spirit with the new covenant. Based on that evidence and Paul's own conflation of “new covenant” and “spirit” in 2 Corinthians 3:3–6, it is apparent that Paul's emphasis on receiving the spirit does not signal a departure from traditional Jewish covenantal theology but instead demonstrates exactly the opposite. In the Prophets, the promise of the spirit is all about Israel being empowered to obey, and Paul's references to the gift of the spirit, circumcision of the heart, and other related concepts are ways of saying that the new covenant has been initiated. This is why Paul writes to the Thessalonians of his confidence that “you yourselves are taught by God to love one another” because God has “given his sacred spirit to you”—that is, the new covenant promise of intrinsic divine instruction and ethical transformation has come to pass. The law (Torah) is a curse not because it is bad but because it is good but it was not (and will not be) followedRomans 3:19–233:19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 3:20 For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 3:21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (which is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed—3:22 namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.Deuteronomy 30:15–1830:15 “Look! I have set before you today life and prosperity on the one hand, and death and disaster on the other. 30:16 What I am commanding you today is to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to obey his commandments, his statutes, and his ordinances. Then you will live and become numerous and the LORD your God will bless you in the land which you are about to possess. 30:17 However, if you turn aside and do not obey, but are lured away to worship and serve other gods, 30:18 I declare to you this very day that you will certainly perish! This framework helps explain Paul's assertion that those “from works of Torah are under a curse” (Galatians 3:10) and his strident insistence on the inability of the “letter” or “works of Torah” to make God's people righteous. The Torah itself prospectively declares Israel's infidelity to be inevitable because even as the new generation prepared to enter the Promised Land, YHWH still had not given them “a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear to this day” (Deut 29:3). Consequently, when (not if) the covenant has been broken and the people have fallen under the curse, Israel's God will be vindicated for his dealings with his people (Deut 31:16–22). YHWH's justness is all the more demonstrated in that even after Israel's inevitable infidelity, he will yet redeem them, at which time he finally will circumcise their hearts, enabling them to keep the (renewed) covenant henceforth (Deuteronomy 30:1–14). The Book of the Torah is therefore given to Israel “as a witness against you” (Deuteronomy 31:26), in anticipation of Israel's covenant-breaking, thereby vindicating YHWH in light of what will come. That is, later hearers and readers will be able to recognize that Israel has been unfaithful despite YHWH's fidelity. The knowledge of sin is revealed through Torah precisely because sin had not been removed from the heart of Israel when the Torah was given. But without a command to transgress, that sin lay latent, present but hidden: “where there is no law, there is no transgression” (Romans 4:15). The command is therefore necessary to awaken and reveal sin in order that sin may be dealt with. This is what Paul means when he says “I would not have known sin except through the law” (7:7). Consequently, although “the Torah is sacred, and the command is sacred and just and good” (7:12), because of the presence of sin in the flesh, it is nevertheless an administration of death (2 Corinthians 3:7), since “the command which was for life, the same was for death” (Romans 7:10).The problem is not with the command but with the inclination of the people, and the command reveals that problem precisely by “bringing about my death through what is good so that through the command sin would become utterly sinful” (Romans 7:13). That is, since the Torah is good, the fact that the command resulted in death reveals the true source of that death—sin dwelling in the “fleshly” inclination of those to whom the command was given, who are not only unable to keep the command but inclined to rebel against it (7:8–9, 14; 8:7).While the command reveals that sinful inclination, it cannot remove it. That removal, Paul argues, must take place pneumatically, on the same “spiritual” plane as the Torah itself, through the circumcision of the heart by the spirit.Does faith nullify the law? No!Romans 3:313:31 Do we then nullify the law through faith? Absolutely not! Instead we uphold the law.It is in this respect that Paul can argue that his gospel in no way “discontinues Torah through fidelity” but rather “establishes Torah” (Rom 3:31). He is not arguing that the Torah has been eliminated, nor does he argue against “legalism” or “law-keeping.” Instead, he argues for a particular understanding of the written Torah's function. “The works of Torah,” he argues, are not a means through which the covenant can be kept or reestablished – the covenant has been broken and cannot be renewed in that manner. Instead, the written Torah, in its proper function, simultaneously serves as a witness to God's justness and fidelity over and against Israel's infidelity and injustice while also pointing forward to the ultimate pneumatic justification of God's people via the new covenant after passing through the curse for disobeying the command – that is, after the age of wrath. The Spirit of Christ is God's glory revealed2 Corinthians 3:7–183:7 But if the ministry that produced death—carved in letters on stone tablets—came with glory, so that the Israelites could not keep their eyes fixed on the face of Moses because of the glory of his face (a glory which was made ineffective), 3:8 how much more glorious will the ministry of the Spirit be? 3:9 For if there was glory in the ministry that produced condemnation, how much more does the ministry that produces righteousness excel in glory! 3:10 For indeed, what had been glorious now has no glory because of the tremendously greater glory of what replaced it. 3:11 For if what was made ineffective came with glory, how much more has what remains come in glory! 3:12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we behave with great boldness, 3:13 and not like Moses who used to put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from staring at the result of the glory that was made ineffective. 3:14 But their minds were closed. For to this very day, the same veil remains when they hear the old covenant read. It has not been removed because only in Christ is it taken away. 3:15 But until this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds, 3:16 but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is present, there is freedom. 3:18 And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit.Paul presents the Torah revealed through Moses (the “letter”) as a mediated and attenuated version of the unmediated, heavenly, spiritual, eternal Torah revealed to Moses. It is the latter Torah—the “Torah of fidelity” (Rom 3:27)—that Paul understands as written on the hearts of new covenant members, who no longer must look to “Moses” to see the glory of God filtered through the veil because they now see what Moses himself saw.The Messiah has put an end to the age of wrath—he has atoned for the people and changed their heartsIn summary, when Paul speaks of deliverance “from this present evil age” (Galatians 1:4; cf. Romans 12:2) and proclaims that now is the “season of good favor” (2 Corinthians 6:2), he is operating from within the same framework as his contemporaries who referred to “the age of wrath.”Israel is under the ongoing reality of the Deuteronomic curses, of which death itself is the ultimate curse. For Israel to overcome death, God himself will have to provide the solution to Israel's chronic infidelity. This traditional connection between Israel's restoration and justification (that is, becoming a righteous and just people) explains why justification is so central to the gospel. The messiah died to put an end to the age of wrath characterized by sin and to inaugurate a new era of God's favor characterized by fidelity mediated through the spirit and resulting in the blessings promised to God's people of old. Whereas Israel's moral impairment and inclination to sin meant the Torah could never grant what it promised (Romans 8:3), God has acted to fulfill that promise, providing a new heart and new spirit capable of exceeding the justness that could be accomplished through the written Torah (Romans 8:2–4, 9–17; 2 Corinthians 3:4–18).But the end of the age of wrath does not mark a discontinuation of Torah (Romans 3:31). In the death of the messiah who fulfilled the Torah's requirements to end the wrath brought about by disobedience to Torah (cf. Romans 4:15; 3:19–31), the Torah has come to its telos (Rom 10:4): the curse of death followed by the renewed life promised by the Torah itself. Those who have received the spirit are therefore no longer “under Torah but under favor” (Rom 6:14–15), having moved beyond the age of wrath into the age of favor.

This concept was inspired by his observations of societal changes during the early pandemic and highlights the need for people to stitch together various cultural elements to find personal significance.Impact of the 90s: Both Paul and Stewart reflect on the influence of the 90s, a time they describe as the "big tent" era, where cultural synchronization was more prevalent. They discuss how the transition from this cohesive period to the fragmented present has affected millennials, who grew up with certain expectations of continuity and stability that have since been disrupted.Role of Technology: The conversation underscores the critical role technology plays in the Patchwork Age. Paul points out that technology has accelerated the fragmentation of cultural institutions and facilitated the creation of micro-tribes, while also providing tools for these smaller groups to connect and find meaning.Puritanical Thought in Modern Society: Paul delves into the resurgence of puritanical thought in contemporary culture. He explains that in the absence of a unifying big tent, many people and communities turn to strict, puritanical codes to create a sense of order and certainty, often resulting in exclusionary or cult-like behavior.Cultural Hybridization: The discussion explores how the 2020s are marked by the hybridization of cultural forms. Paul and Stewart note that the blending of genres, ideas, and traditions—partly a result of the digital and analog worlds colliding in the 90s—continues to shape the way people create and interact in today's fragmented cultural landscape.Challenges of Micro-Tribalism: The shift from large, cohesive cultural institutions to smaller, fragmented micro-tribes presents unique challenges. Paul discusses how these micro-tribes often face internal fractionation, leading to further fragmentation and instability. He emphasizes the need for individuals to navigate this complexity creatively to find stability and meaning.Future of AI and Synthetic Relationships: The episode touches on the future of AI and its potential to create synthetic relationships. Paul predicts that as AI technology advances, people will form relationships with AI entities, which could lead to complex ethical and philosophical questions about consciousness, embodiment, and the nature of human connections in an increasingly digital world.

Friends of the Rosary, Today, June 11, we celebrate the memorial day of St. Barnabas. Though not one of the 12 apostles chosen by the Lord Jesus, he is traditionally regarded as one of the 72 disciples of Christ. He was responsible for welcoming St. Paul into the Church. St. Barnabas was born to wealthy Jewish parents on the Greek-speaking island of Cyprus, probably around Christ's birth. He studied at the school of Gamaliel (who also taught St. Paul). Later on, when Christ's public ministry began, Barnabas may have been among those who heard him preach in person. At some point, either during Christ's ministry or after his death and resurrection, Barnabas decided to commit himself most radically to the teachings he had received. He sold the large estate he had inherited, contributed the proceeds entirely to the Church, and joined Christ's other apostles in holding all of their possessions in common. Both Paul and Barnabas received a calling from God to become the “Apostles of the Gentiles,” preaching and suffering persecution and hardships for the sake of establishing Christianity among those of a non-Jewish background. The reference to the “laying-on of hands” in Acts, chapter 13, suggests that Paul and Barnabas may have been consecrated as bishops on this occasion. Barnabas was stoned to death by a mob in Cyprus around the year 62. St. Luke described Barnabas as “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith (Acts 6:24).” He was known for his exceptional kindliness, personal sanctity, and openness to pagans. Ave Maria! Join the world's largest aviation community at aopa.org/join Full notes below: Dennis has a Cardinal RG with a prop governor issue. When it's warm, the prop underspeeds just a little. He's done a bunch of troubleshooting, and he is at a loss. The manufacturer said to send his prop in, but he is reluctant to do that given how often prop shops deem them unfit for continued service. Dennis is an A&P and he asks if he is allowed to open up the governor and work on it. Mike said he doesn't advise it because he both can't do it legally and doesn't have the right tools. Both Paul and Colleen said their props do the same thing, and they recommend he crank up the rpm just a little since a small amount of overspeed is allowed under the type design. Luis is looking to get back into aviation maintenance after earning an A&P many years ago. The hosts debate the FAR, which says that a mechanic is current if the Administrator deems he or she so, or if the mechanic has served as a technician for the past six months. The hosts think Luis should use the preventative maintenance provisions to do the work without supervision. Jeff built an airplane with a PZL Franklin 235 and the engine won't make full power. The static rpm is 2800, and anything beyond 2100 kills the engine. He thinks either his homemade exhaust is causing too much back pressure, or there was a manufacturing issue. He wonders if there's a way to isolate the problem. The ignition timing is set to 32 degrees, which is the manufacturer spec. Mike and Paul recommend backing off the timing first to see what happens. Paul suggests he could also remove part of the exhaust to see what happens. Josh wonders if we are too eager to get off avgas, specifically because of its proprieties as a lubricant. He's always heard that it lubricates valves, but Mike thinks it's probably not a concern. It's true that before valve seats were hardened, there was some microwelding, which led to valve seat recession. Lycoming switched to hardened valve seats in the 90s, and Continental switched in the early 2000s. There is a possibility that some of the older Continental cylinders could have problems with valve recession, but it's too early to tell. He details the work that AOPA is doing with the dual-fuel Baron, which is seeking to understand some of these issues.

Ok, we weren't living under rocks. Both Paul and I knew about how Jared from Subway got busted for messing with kids. But that's ALL we knew prior to doing this episode. We didn't know the sheer evil and depraved monster that hid behind the all American good guy image that he and Subway put in front of the cameras. We cover how he went from being extremely morbidly obese to becoming slim, rich and famous using the so called Subway diet. He was so famous that even famous people wanted to be seen with him. He was on every TV multiple times a day, and he became a very well paid and popular motivational speaker, while he and Subway laughed all the way to the bank. We also meet a courageous woman who Jared revealed his true nature to, causing her to launch a crusade to bring him down. This ruined her life. We also cover how his #1 man became an enabler, supplying Jared with all the forbidden treasures he wanted, and how this ultimately led to his downfall. He used his charity to fund his adventures. He flaunted how he was able to get away with his depravity, and if he hadn't been caught, he'd still be doing it, and who knows what it would have escalated to. Subway even tried to cover it up at first. He literally thought he was bulletproof, but luckily, he was taken down. So, join us. Grab a soda and a Jersey Mikes, or Firehouse Sub or a Pub Sub. Anything but a Subway sub, and get ready for an intense episode about one of the sickest pukes we've ever covered. As a young man, GW Chew saw his family dying early of lifestyle-related diseases, and he thought maybe he could do something about it. With a last name like that—yes, “Chew” is his real last name—maybe GW was destined to become a chef—that's exactly what he did.  Because of his interest in Seventh Day Adventism, GW gradually became Chef Chew by experimenting with Seventh Day Adventist recipes, ultimately leading him down the path of opening up his own restaurant and now to being a plant-based meat manufacturer. His company—Something Better Foods—is already selling six different plant-based meats to school districts and some Whole Foods Market locations.  As you'll hear in this interview from Chef Chew, unlike most plant-based meat, he doesn't rely on extrusion of plant protein isolates, but rather uses a layer-ization process he pioneered using whole soybeans to make his brand of alt-meat called Better Chew. As Chef Chew says, “it looks like chicken; it tastes like chicken; but it ain't chicken!” In this conversation we talk about Chef Chew's life path, his alternative financing strategies for Something Better Foods, where he's been and where he intends to take the company.  Discussed in this episode Chef Chew went through the ICA Fund accelerator program. He recommends watching Live to 100 on Netflix. He loves the book Start with Why by Simon Sinek. He started with the Country Life Cookbook, which you can get for $2 on Amazon! Both Paul and Chef Chew love Butler's Soy Curls Our past episodes (51 and 108) with Plant Based On a Budget's Toni Okamoto More about Chef GW Chew GW Chew, aka Chef Chew, is the Founder & CEO of Something Better Foods Inc. and has been a vegan food inventor/restaurateur for over 15 years. Adopted at birth into a family with the last name “Chew,” Chef Chew believes that he was born with a mission and purpose to change lives for the better, one chew at a time. Chef Chew grew up in the “country” amongst a family of very heavy meat eaters and noticed over time that a lot of different diseases, from diabetes to cancer, plagued the members of his family. He later discovered that many of those same diseases have been linked to poor diet and overconsumption of animal meat products. Inspired to begin living a healthy lifestyle, Chef Chew switched to a plant-based diet in 2001 and started experimenting with creating vegan food products in 2004. He painstakingly invented the Better Chew proteins in his mom's kitchen and has perfected the textures and taste over the past 15 years. As part of his mission to democratize the access of healthy food, Chef Chew most recently created the Better Chew Box to deliver healthy and affordable plant-based protein solutions directly to your community!

John enjoyed what was a very long week judging an extremely talented group of horses. Both Paul and John dive into what it means to judge at a high level within the Arabian industry, from technical knowledge, scrutiny of the details, and the endurance required to stand in an arena all day long without much walking and definitely very little sitting. They discuss the potential of conflicts of interests in such a tight-knit community, and discuss their strategies to avoid them. They also discuss why a horse may end up placed drastically differently from one judge to another - from background, to personal preference, to what one person saw that another may have missed. They also jump into auction transparency: When John took on the Head Trainer position at Cal Poly Pomona, an end was brought to private treaty sales from the Cal Poly program and all horses were sold at auction. John talks through how he approached this unique problem, and how Cal Poly has not only sold more horses, but have drawn more buyers through their practices that set forth an alternative blueprint for managing sales in the Arabian industry. Paul Johnson welcomes U.S. Senator and No Labels Founding Chairman Joe Lieberman to discuss how No Labels plans to revolutionize American politics by empowering the actual majority. The two discuss how Lieberman almost became Vice President for candidate John McCain, their opinion on how many of today's leaders operate, how U.S. politics and the public seem to be going in different directions, and what No Labels should do to get the amount of delegates that are necessary to actually become president. Today's episode revolves around one of the most controversial topics of today: No Labels' attempt to put their party on the ballot and potentially nominate an independent candidate for president. Senator Joe Lieberman shares the story of how he, as an independent candidate, was both a Democratic nominee for vice president and almost became vice president under a Republican nominee, Senator John McCain. Paul and Senator Lieberman discuss their belief that U.S. politics is a lot more divisive than the public is, and why they believe that's the case. Both Paul and Sen. Lieberman believe that promoting the divisions is a very profitable model for the political parties and the nightly news. Politicians respond to that by being even more divisive. Senator Lieberman shares an interesting stat: “49% of the American people describe themselves politically as Independents." He sees that as a reaction to the Republican and the Democratic parties. Paul points out that less than 10% of the public vote in partisan primaries and, because of gerrymandering, out of 500,000 elected offices, 70% are decided with no real opposition in the general election, leaving most voters cut out of the process of electing their officials. As a result, Senator Joe Lieberman says that too many leaders are playing to the narrow base of people who vote in the primary and using fear to exploit the insecurity around various problems. Everything is existential, and we use alarmism on every issue. This exploitation is dividing the country. Paul touches upon what led him to become an Independent, and how, as an Independent, it became much easier to see the excesses of both parties. He points out that both parties see themselves as entitled to being only one of two choices to the American people, and they see No Labels as a spoiler, meaning they don't believe other choices should be available. Senator Lieberman illustrates some of the challenges of the current dual-opposing-parties political system, that No Labels aims to not only give people choices, but to try and allow for a more optimistic view of America than exists within the two parties today. Fun fact: the last successful third ticket at the presidential level was none other than Abraham Lincoln in 1860. According to Lieberman, even though a third party candidate for president has not been elected since Lincoln, third party candidates, if they've been credible, can really make a difference on policy. Teddy Roosevelt made both parties focus on conservation and rights for workers. Ross Perot campaigned around a balanced budget that resulted in Bill Clinton focusing on the first balanced budget in decades. Paul and No Labels Founding Chairman Joe Lieberman talk about what would be necessary for No Labels to be able to get the amount of delegates that are necessary to actually become president.     Mentioned in This Episode: optamerican.com Addictive Ideologies: Finding Meaning and Agency When Politics Fail You by Dr Emily Bashah and Hon Paul Johnson The Optimistic American on YouTube - @optamerican Become a premium supporter of the show: OptAmerican.com/premium Senator Joe Lieberman NoLabels.org Ronald Reagan Tip O'Neill Donald Trump John McCain Abraham Lincoln George Washington Gallup.com  Barack Obama Hillary Clinton Bill Clinton  Joe Biden

Paul had seen God move in mighty ways. Often when many were coming to salvation, it also was a time when persecution and hardships were the greatest. Fourteen years earlier, while he and Barnabas were preaching in Lystra, Paul noticed a crippled man listening who had believing faith. He healed the man, and he immediately stood up and walked. When the crowds witnessed this miracle, they did not praise God but began to worship Paul and Barnabas as pagan gods. Both Paul and Barnabas pleaded with the people not to believe such lies, but scripture says that “they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.” (Acts 14:18)Jews from Antioch and Iconium convinced the people to turn on Paul and Barnabas. They stoned Paul until they were convinced he was dead, then drug his lifeless body through the streets and out of the city. Other believers gathered around his body, grieving and likely making plans for his burial. But while they were gathered around what they thought was the corpse of Paul, he rose up and returned to the work of the gospel. This event may be what Paul is referencing in 2 Corinthians 12:1-6. In recounting this amazing experience, we learn three characteristics of a true disciple:The mark of a true discipleThe hope of a true discipleThe desire of a true disciple

Romans 2:27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? John wrote about those who believe in Jesus when he wrote, 1 John 5:2-3 “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.” Both Paul and John understood that those who believe in Jesus keep God's commandments and do them with joy. Paul said in vs. 27 that those believers will judge those who do not believe in Jesus, yet are circumcised and know the letter of the Law. Those who do not believe in Jesus are transgressors of the Law. Those who do believe in Jesus, although they have transgressed the Law, are considered by God as having fulfilled the Law through the righteousness of Christ. Isn't this an amazing truth?! What is the believer's judgment about those who are circumcised, know the Law, yet habitually transgress it? Their judgment is that only those who trust in Jesus can be regarded by God as having fulfilled the Law of God. They also testify that only those who love with Jesus can be regarded as righteous in Christ. Loving with Jesus is the evidence that one is justified before God. Are you justified before God? Do you live to love with Jesus? If so, have you rejoiced today in your salvation and the gift of righteousness that has been reckoned to your account before God? In this episode of The Optimistic American, Paul Johnson sits down with Brandon Tatum to discuss race and police relations in America. They cover some very controversial issues ranging from race relations, the reality of White privilege, police shootings, and the 1619 Project. Paul and Brandon start the conversation by discussing Brandon's early life, his relationship with God, and playing competitive sports. Brandon explains what it means to be uncoachable and why you should stop taking things personally. Brandon shares why he believes too many Black people have a victim mindset that enslaves them in a "mental plantation." According to Paul, the answer to a victim mindset is purpose, and chasing happiness is not sustainable. People should focus on finding meaning. Only then can they find true happiness. Paul highlights how the victim triangle is keeping you stuck. Brandon shares how he discovered a passion for policing after going on a life-changing ride along. Paul and Brandon discuss the disconnect between the police and the general public. Both Paul and Brandon discuss their involvement with police, Brandon as a police officer and Paul as Mayor of the 5th largest city in the US. Brandon reveals what the data says about police killings and racial bias - and why it's rarely about race when a cop pulls you over. Brandon points out that many people raise their children to hate the police and that does damage to the child and to society. Brandon and Paul agree that the case of Tyre Nichols was not about race, or even systemic racism, but there are groups of people who want it to be about race because it drives their agenda. According to Paul, people are so focused on racism especially as it comes to police departments that it actually harms their ability to fix the real issues. He points to the bigger issue of creating relationships between police and neighbors but that requires resources. Brandon explains why we need community policing and how defunding the police will only lead to low-quality policing. Brandon goes through the best way to interact with the police and how to act when a cop pulls you over. When it comes to police brutality, Paul believes the worst thing you can do is trust the media on the right or left because they rarely have facts on what actually happened, and they profit from sensationalized reporting. The police kill about 2 to 4000 people a year. Medical malpractice kills more than 300,000 people annually - but the police are the enemy. Brandon reveals that white people are shot twice as much as Black people - but you will never see it in the news. Brandon and Paul discuss opposition to The 1619 project because it has bad history. It's designed to divide people, and most importantly, abandon the foundation of our country based upon the Declaration of Independence. We were also abandoning the importance of believing that all people are created equal. For Brandon, it's disgusting that some people profit from us living in fear and hating each other. Paul describes the link between agency and finding truth.     Mentioned in This Episode: optamerican.com Brandon Tatum's LinkedIn Subscribe to Brandon Tatum's YouTube Channel Beaten Black and Blue: Being a Black Cop in an America Under Siege by Brandon Tatum

Slideshow for this message is available Introduction James 2 Happy New Year, Faith Community Bible Church. Welcome to 2023. Today we return to the book of James and we are in James chapter 2 verse 14. So turn with me there. Now it's been about a month since we've been in the book of James and today we come to the heart. Everything James is trying to say revolves around the hub of chapter 2 verses 14-26. There could hardly be a more important section of the Bible to understand if you are going to get your mind the doctrine of justification, the doctrine of how we are made right with God. Let's review what James is trying to do. Remember the setup of the book of James. James was the brother of Jesus. He grew up with Jesus. He washed dishes along side of Jesus. He split wood and worked in the garden with Jesus. But he didn't believe in Jesus till after the resurrection. The fact that this sort of unbelief was possible frightened him. Realizing that it was possible to be in this kind of proximity to the Lord of the universe without possessing genuine faith was eye opening to say the least. How could that be? He thought he had a faith. But upon examination, it's pretty hard to say you have a genuine faith while simultaneously accusing the Messiah, God come in the flesh, of being a lunatic. That's a pretty good indication your not on the right track. So it probably got James wondering, “How many people think they have saving faith but really don't.” How many people think, “Oh yeah, I'm good with God.” And God saying to them, “I'm not good with you.” So the book of James was written as a test for the legitimacy of our faith. James is on a mission to make sure you and I are not deceived the way he was. Many people come to church, live moral lives and think because they do those things, they are Christians. But that does not make them Christians. So what does? James wants to tell us. He doesn't want us to be deceived. Here's the really, really scary thing about being deceived. By definition, you don't know it. You are convinced you are not one of those poor deceived fellows. There's not even a hint of doubt. I'm not deceived! But the reality is you are. When the reality finally lands, there is shock, surprise, maybe even horror. Let me give you an example. If I were to ask you, “Do you think you are good judge of people's character?” You'd probably say, “Yes.” That's how 99% of the human race answers that question. Let me ask you a second question, do you think that 99% of people are good judges of character? Not a chance in the world. In fact, most studies reveal that the people who are the worst at this are the most confident. They are the most blind. And you might think, there's no way. I know I'm a good judge of character. But how do you know you're not one of the people who is the most confident but in fact is the most blind? The only way to know for sure would be to take an objective test. To trust a test outside of our own perception. Well, that's what James is doing here in regards to faith. He's saying, “I actually don't really care what you say. People can SAY and do SAY anything. I'm going to trust the objective test results.” He's trying to push our confidence outside of our own perception to something objective. He's trying to say, the whole problem with being deceived is that you are listening to the wrong source. You need other sources of truth. Your relying too heavily on your internal world. You need to locate your confidence on something objective outside of your internal world. And so he's developing a series of objective tests to help us evaluate the genuineness of our faith. That's what the book of James is all about. And we've seen many of these test thus far in the book. Genuine faith has joy in trials Genuine faith doesn't seek the world's approval Genuine faith is not characterized by anger. Genuine faith does not show favoritism. But today we come to the core principle at work in all tests. It's the operating principle out of which the test questions come. And here is that principle: Genuine faith works. This is a two week series on verses 14-26. Today we are going to focus on the principle in verses 14-18 and then next week will focus on the examples he gives in verses 19-26. So let's look at the principle here: Now every Christian who reads their Bible carefully, at some point in their life struggles with this text. Why? Because it appears on a surface reading to be in direct contraction to what Paul says about faith in Romans 3 and in Galatians 2. So keep in mind that James is saying faith without works is useless. In fact, he's going to summarize it here in verse 24. That's the summary point of this entire section. If you know anything about the reformation, you can almost hear Martin Luther and Zwingli and Calvin groaning right there. All the reformers would just be squirming in their chairs. All the reformers focused on Paul's articulation of justification which, in fact, is the exact opposite of James. So get James' articulation in your head. A person is justified by WORKS and not by faith alone. Now let's read Paul. Paul is in a section in Romans 3 where he is talking about the hopeless condition of mankind in their sin. He's saying we are all under sin. We are just sin machines. If you want to use works as a qualifier to enter heaven, we are all failures. None of us can be justified, can be made right with God on the basis of our works. Romans 3 If that wasn't clear enough he says it again in verse 28. And if that wasn't clear enough listen to how he says it in Galatians 2. In Galatians 2 Paul is talking about the danger of trying to make distinctions among ourselves based on our works. He's saying, “Listen, our works don't make us right with God. God makes us right with God.” Listen how he says it. Galatians 2 Now just to illustrate this in all it's brilliant 3D color, let's put Paul and James side by side, let's put them in the boxing ring and let em fight it out: So what's going on here. Is the Bible contradicting itself? If the Bible is contradicting itself, we all just need to go home because one of the most basic tenants of Christianity is that the Bible has internal consistency. There's an integrity to it. Well, let me put an end to the suspense. The Bible is not contradicting itself. Let's begin by saying, even within the book of James, there's plenty of evidence that James agrees with Paul and the reformers. Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone apart from any works of the law. James would agree with that. Both Paul and James were at the Jerusalem counsel in Acts 15 where they all agreed salvation is for all people apart from works of the law. Earlier in chapter 2:5 James talks about Christians as being heirs of the kingdom. Think about what that implies regarding salvation. What is the difference between wages and an inheritance? Wages are given because of work performed. Inheritances are given because of who you are. Wages are related to effort. Inheritance is related to DNA. Wages are conditional upon performance. Inheritance is certain. Wages are deposited piece by piece according to merit. Inheritance is already in the bank. These are massively different concepts. For James to say that Christians are heirs to the kingdom means we are not earning our salvation; we are heirs of salvation. There's no way James is saying, "You are heirs of the kingdom of God, now work to get your inheritance."James agrees with Paul. We are saved by grace. So why do Paul and James sound so different? Why do they sound like they are contradicting one another. The answer is simple. Paul is using the word justification differently than James. To illustrate this, let me ask you to interpret this sentence. Here's the sentence: What do I mean? It can mean one of two things. If I just got in trouble with the law, then it almost certain means, I'm going to a lawyer and he is going to give me some advice. But grammatically it has another possible meaning. Let's just paint a different context. Let's say I was a successful well-known, seasoned lawyer who had been in the industry for 40 years and I changed my focus from practicing to consulting. Now what does that sentence mean? I'm going to go consult a lawyer. It's literally the opposite meaning. Instead of going to receive advice, I'm going to go give advice. The word justification is similar in that it can have opposite meanings. James is using the word justified in a different way than Paul is using it. So let's start by explaining the two possible different meanings: The word justified, δικαιόω, can mean to be made right. So, given that definition, if you have a debt, you justify yourself, you make yourself right, by paying the debt. When you make that payment you have become justified because now the debt has a zero BALANCE. Think about how we use the word in reference to our word processors. When we JUSTIFY the margins in our documents we are balancing the left and right sides of the document. Justified is to make everything balanced. So that's one usage of the word. This is the way Paul is using the word. But the word justified has another possible meaning. It had another meaning then just as it has another meaning now. It can also mean, to prove yourself right? For example, I'm a tech nerd so I love clean energy. If you said to me, hey solar energy is bad for the environment, I'd say, "Can you justify that statement." How am I using the word justify there. I'm not saying, you're in debt and you need to balance the books. Rather, I'm saying, demonstrate that this statement is a true statement. Demonstrate that the claim is legitimate. I'm saying, prove to me that what you said is true. Give me evidence for your claim. That's exactly the difference between Paul and James. When Paul says we're justified by faith, he means we cannot BALANCE the debt on our own. We cannot be made right with God except through the merits of Jesus Christ and the works of Jesus Christ. We can't make ourselves right. It doesn't matter how much we work. Our works will never balance the books. The only way to balance the books is for God to credit us his righteousness. The credit, the balancing is an act of the mercy of God apart from our works. That's why he says, “by works of the law no one will be justified” James on the other hand is coming at it from the opposite perspective. You claim you've been justified apart from the works of the law. Great, demonstrate it. Prove to me that what you are saying is more than just words. Let me illustrate this way. Right now, it's winter and all the leaves are off the trees so it's hard to tell the variety. You come over to my house and you see these two trees in my back yard. And I make a claim, “This tree is an apple trees.” Paul and James would respond differently to that claim. Paul would say, I don't care what you say. What makes an apple tree an apple tree is DNA. It's genetics. No amount of spading the ground, fertilizing, watering will make an apple tree. No amount of talking. An apple tree has to be born of an apple seed. And an apple seed comes from God. God makes apple trees apart from the will of the apple tree or men. That's Paul. James would listen to that same claim, “This tree is an apple tree.” And he would, "I don't care what you say. How do I know those aren't just words. Prove it. Let me see the shape of the leaf. If it's an apple tree it will have a certain shape. If it's an apple tree there will be a certain type of flower when it blossoms and then you will see the fruit. Give me some evidence that your claim is true. That's James James and Paul looking at Justifications from opposite sides of same coin. Paul is talking about cause. What's caused you to become saved. James is talking about effect. If you have been saved, what effect will that have on your life. What effect does that salvation have on your living. Paul and James are concerned about different abuses. Paul says, “You think WORKS can get you into heaven. Ha! Your fooled.” James says, “You think WORDS can get you into heaven. Ha! Your fooled.” Paul is guarding against people who think they can TOIL their way into kingdom. James is guarding against people who think they can TALK their way into kingdom. When Paul says we're justified WITHOUT works, he means it's God's mercy that MAKES us right with God. When James says we're justify BY our works, he means it's our works DEOMONSTRATE God's work. Or as it has been famously articulated: I think you need quotes on the second faith in order to read it properly. So that's how to understand the text. The Application Now there's a tremendous amount of satisfaction that comes in understanding the concept here. It feels good to have intellectual resolve. But we need to make sure we don't miss the point. It is so important to not just understand how the test works but to actually take the test. It's literally the difference between understanding how an MRI machine works and getting an MRI. Let's not treat this like an academic exercise. James intends this test to land and confront us. He intends us to take the test and to have the test results come back. Don't give this test to other people. Give it to yourself. Here's how you take the test. There's three questions on the test. So in order to pass the test you just have to check yes to three questions. It's a very simple test. The test will answer this question: do I have saving faith? Historically, theologians have given saving faith three characteristics, and they've used three Latin words to describe these elements of saving faith. So the first question on the test is do you have notitia? Do you have the information of the gospel? The first “element” that saving faith entails is an intellectual understanding to the bare facts of the gospel. It's the raw fact. It's the data. It's the information. You have to know what the gospel is or you cannot be a Christian — you must know that Jesus, the eternal Son of God took on flesh and was born of the virgin Mary. He was born under the Law and was obedient to God and then died on the cross for our sins and rose again all in fulfillment of the Scriptures. You have to know who God is. You have to know the facts. Being a Christian is not less than that. But James wants us to go beyond the intellect. Let's get beyond the raw data. Now the way he illustrates the necessity of going beyond raw data is by giving us an example. It's just absolutely startling example. What is he saying here. It's not bad to know about God. You do well. But let me just remind you, it'a a lot more than knowledge. Be careful in being smug in your knowledge. Be careful in pointing to knowledge as the evidence that your faith is genuine. Knowledge is part of the equation but it's not all of the equation. Could a demon write a systematic theology? Yes. What would a demon score on a quiz in seminary about the attributes of God. He would score 100% Do you see the point? Knowledge of God is great. But you can have perfect knowledge of God and still be nothing more than a demon. Perfect knowledge of God has elevated you no higher than rank of demon. That might surprise you. But it's true. So what else do I need? How do I distinguish between true saving faith and the experience of demons? It must be related to something other than knowledge. Well there's a second aspect. Here's the second question on the test. Not only must there be an intellectual assent to the facts of the gospel, there must also be a conviction that these facts are true. When the facts land, an emotional response is created. There must be an emotional response. For example, I can tell you all the facts (information, the notitia) of the story of the Apollo missions and the landing on the moon. But you must believe that it is true. Some people have a knowledge of the facts of the lunar landing. But they believe the whole thing was a great big fabrication. They think it was all one big giant hoax and consequently they feel nothing. There's no assensus. But if you do believe it's true, if you watch the footage, you see the rocket taking off, you watch it land on the moon, it creates a feeling of awe. That's amazing that they did that. Saving faith both understands the gospel facts and believes that those facts are true. But you know what? You still haven't advanced beyond a demon. He says, “You believe God is one. Good! So do the demons. The demons believe and what? Shudder. There's assensus.” Belief is a shorthand way of saying you have both notita and assensus. You see a demon has notitia (knowledge). He has knowledge that God is one. And he has assensus (believes) - he believes that God is one. And because he believes there is an emotional response. He shudders. There's the emotional component. Believe me: a demon respects God. I think it's probably quite accurate to say that a demon believes that God is one more than you or I believe God is one. Demons have been to the absolute greatest seminary in the universe. They've been to heaven. They have seen God. They know more about God than Paul, James, Moses combined. They both know and believe. "Get all the knowledge you can about God. That's wonderful. Be as precise and accurate as possible. Terrific. Then believe that these things are true. Terrific. But those two things by themselves still don't qualify you to be anything more than a demon. You can be a demon and have that. So what is it. Your killing me. What separates demons from Christians? There's a third aspect. He's the third question on the test. It's the trust. It's a decision of the will to place my life under submission to what I know and believe. To return to the appollo rocket analogy. Faith is not just receiving the raw information that rockets made it to the moon. It's not just agreement that this event happened. It's also trust. It's saying, “I'll get on that rocket. I'll believe it to the point where I will put my life in that rocket.” Faith is not merely a matter of the intellect, nor of the intellect and the emotions combined; it is also a matter of the will. It's a determination of the soul to commit and entrust my life entirely to something. Without this act of the will, the object of belief - which in this case God - which remains outside of him. It cannot be part of him until he surrenders his will. God is able to help; he is willing to help. But if the sinner is unwilling to trust him, if he has no fiducia then God cannot help. Listen it is at this point where most ‘so called Christians' are deceived. This is why James is so big on works. Because the works is the evidence that you have fiducia. The works is the evidence that your faith is genuine. It's why he gives the example of helping the poor. How can you say, “I have genuine faith in God” when I'm not interested in what God tells me to be interested in. How can you say, “I've gone all in with God.” while not going all in with God? That's not faith. That's something else. Let's take the book of James and apply it to TESLA stock, “If you came up to James and said, I have faith that TESLA stock will tripple this year." James would look at you and say, "Really? That's great.” I've got one question for you: How much do you have invested? Well, Nothing. James would say: You have notitia. You have assensus. But you do not have fiducia. You don't have trust. If you had faith, your investment would demonstrate your faith. But you no investment; therefore, you have no faith. James wants to know, “Are you a true Christian like you think you are? Are you invested? Does your life demonstrate that you actually believe these things? Have you actually entrusted yourself and all that you are into the hands of the God of truth.” This is why faith and repentance are always related. Those who put their faith in Christ turn from their sins. Investing in TESLA is a decision to not invest in everything else. Boarding the rocket is choosing to not stay on earth. And TRUSTING in Jesus Christ is a decision to NOT trust in anything else this world has to offer. It's not trusting in money, it's not trusting in people's opinions, your ability, your talents, your status… Repentance is not faith and faith is not repentance. But the two are impossibly interconnected. The turn to God in saving faith causes true repentance of turning from sin. I think what James is really concerned about is just how scary possible it is to have notitia (knowledge) and (assensus) and not have the one key piece (fiducia). This happens at all levels of life. How many of you know that overeating is bad for you (notitia)? How many of you believe that overeating is bad for you (assensus)? How many of you still overeat? You lack the fiducia. You actually trust something else. No matter how unhealthy it is, I choose to submit to food, because I want what food gives me. Why would we do that? We are willfully ignorant of the consequences, in pursuit of our precious. We think that by stubbornly fighting, we can somehow alpha male our way through it. Oh it's scary possible, friend. It's scary possible to have information about something, agree with something but not ultimately submit to it. That's why James uses demons as his primary demonstration of this phenomena. Demons don't shake their fist at God. What do they do? They shudder! They run from him. They respect the greatness of God and therefore they are frightened. They know what he can do. And rather to submit to him, they move about in the shadows. Remember what the demons said to Jesus during his earthly ministry. Leave us alone. Depart from us Son of God. They know what he was capable of doing. This, my friend, is the greatest evidence that you who think you are a Christian, in fact are not a Christian at all. Is that how you live your life? Leave me alone God. Leave me to myself. Leave me to my own devices. I want to lurk here in the shadows. If that's true, then you don't have fudicia. You aren't any different than a demon. It's very possible for us to know God is great, to believe God is great and shudder. It's possible to be scared of punishment, and to even alter your behavior and become a very moral person, even an incredibly moral person, even an incredibly religious person. But all of your religion and all of your morality is nothing but shuddering. It's just religious fire insurance. I know there's a God but I don't want to submit to him. I'll do just enough to keep him happy, to keep him off my back. The Gospel and How to Receive it So what do you need to do? What is the one thing you need to do? You need entrust yourself to the God of the Universe. You need to go all in. That's the ticket. That's the key. How do you know if you have saving faith? It works. It evidences itself in the will being bent in a certain direction. Windows orphas, trials. all sorts of stuff. There's an evidence in your life that you are all in with Jesus. The point for us is that all three of these characteristics must be present in faith or otherwise it is not saving faith. Let's take a moment and pray and bend the will to God. Prayer of Submission

Maribeth continues her conversation with Los Angeles Times writer Paul Thornton and brings Ed Ternan into their conversation about educating children on the danger of fentanyl. Following the death of Melanie Ramos, Paul and his wife had the drugs and alcohol talk with their children much earlier than they had anticipated. Maribeth advised putting this talk into the context of consent - the idea that you have control over what you put into your body. Both Paul and Maribeth knew this was part of a larger conversation they wanted to start with parents about this new threat to children and why children are turning to substances in such large numbers. Ed Ternan lost his youngest son Charlie in May of 2022. Charlie died shortly after taking what he thought was a Percocet he'd purchased online that turned out to be a "fentapill." At that time, this was not in the public consciousness. Charlie was a savvy college senior but did not know the danger of buying a pill online. Following Charlie's death, Ed and his wife founded Song for Charlie to raise awareness about fentapills. Ed shares Charlie's story and what he has learned during his two-year deep dive into understanding the new drug trade. "We need to rethink how we describe the drug landscape and reimagine the drug talk we have with our children around the kitchen table," Ed explains, "we need to move away from the scare tactics." In this episode, the three talk about having age-appropriate conversations with children to build trust and help them navigate a world that often feels overwhelming.

Welcome to episode 74 of Grasp the Bible.  Today, we will be talking about the four expectations that Spring Baptist Church has of its members.Healthy church members do the following:Regularly attend the Sunday morning worship serviceActively participate in a small group Bible study (we call them Life Groups)Serve in the church according to their spiritual giftsGive financially to the needs of the churchLet's talk about each one...Attending a Sunday morning worship service:  The writer of Hebrews exhorts Christians not to forsake the gathering of themselves (Heb. 10:25).  While it's true that we can worship God alone, He intended for us to worship together as a body.  Also, if we take a self-centered approach to worship, we miss out on the opportunity to minister to others at church and to inspire them to worship as well.  As our senior pastor often says, "If it won't keep you from work on Monday, it shouldn't keep you from church on Sunday."Actively participating in a small group Bible study:  Small groups allow for participants to discuss the Scripture being taught and it challenges them to find ways to apply it in daily life.  Also, many people form friendships in these groups that last for years.  What's more, most of the ministry in our church originates in our small groups.Serve in the church:  Most churches (including ours) rely greatly on members volunteering to do the work of the ministry.  Both Paul and Peter write about how the Holy Spirit imparts at least one spiritual gift to believers so they may serve in their local church.  We find completeness in our faith when we employ the gifts God has given us when we serve in the church.  Want to take an assessment to determine your spiritual gifts?  Take our free survey here.Giving financially:  Tithing is commanded in the Old Testament.  Jesus commends the Pharisees in the New Testament for tithing.  God expects His people to give financially to support the work of the local church.  A tithe (10%) is the base amount of what is expected, with gifts and offerings above that.  Survey after survey over the last 20 years consistently shows that American churchgoers give (on average) only 2% of their income to the church.  The most common reason not to give 10% is "I just can't afford it."  Yet, we pay our government much more in taxes each year!  Why don't we tell the IRS that we can only give them 2%?  It's because we fear the consequences...and so we pay our taxes.  God asks for less than the IRS, and we tell Him no.  What this says is that we fear people more than we fear God.  All we have belongs to Him; we are simply stewards of His resources.  No doubt, it displeases Him when we take His money and spend it all on ourselves and give little, if any, back to Him.  And then we wonder why our finances are such a mess.  We encourage people who are not currently giving to begin by giving something and then watch God work.  Continue to increase giving until you are at 10%.  Give more, if you want.We hope that you found this episode both challenging and helpful as you assess your spiritual health as a church member.

The Perpetual Chess Adult Improver Series is back, but this time with a twist. We feature a senior guest who is “more interested in sustainment than improvement”, and we have a guest co-host joining the conversation! Our guest, Paul Hedrick is a 56 year old literature and history teacher based in New Mexico. Paul enjoys listening to Perpetual Chess, but felt that older, less improvement focused chess lovers like himself were underrepresented on the podcast. To help guide the conversation, I enlisted the help of Han Schut. Han is a Chess Steps trainer, a Chessable Author and a frequent contributor to New in Chess magazine. The three of us try to sort out questions such as: Why does Paul study chess daily if his goal is not to improve? How can one know if they should shift their goals from “Adult Improver” to “Senior Sustainer?” How should one supplement the curriculum of the Chess Steps method? Both Paul and Han offered great perspectives on the different roles chess study can play in one's life, so I hope you all enjoy the conversation as I did.
