How do you treat those in society who may be disenfranchised? How do you treat those with special needs? How do you look at them, with both your eyes and heart? Do you save space for them as the Prophet did? Do you make them feel loved and welcome? Ihsan is to treat people with excellence, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Regardless of their connections. Regardless of their appearance. Treat people as a Muhsen because it's a reflection of who you are. How do you treat others? Sincerely, or superficially? In God's eyes, do you truly reflect Ihsan? He loves the Muhseneen.

In our 2020 American Muslim Poll, we found that one in three American Muslims has an immediate family member with a disability, which is roughly the same of every other faith community we studied.  In March 2022, ISPU went through a staff inclusivity and sensitivity training, an assessment of our materials, and more, with help from MUHSEN—an organization that provides programs and services to improve the experience within mosques, and engender positive communities, for those with disabilities. We are honored to now be a MUHSEN-certified nonprofit organization able to provide services and accommodations for those with special needs. On today's episode of Deep Dives with ISPU, ISPU's Outreach and Partnerships Manager, Petra Alsoofy, is joined by Joohi Tahir, Co-founder and Executive Director of MUHSEN, for a discussion on accessibility and disability in American Muslim communities. Haqq Dawah Media Presents: Streamline DeenAsSalaam Alkuim,Today's episode is about the third level of Faith Ishan:Ihsan is the highest status of religion Islam. Its definition that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) described is: “To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, He sees you.” The concept of Ihsan in Islam is also that a Muslim is a responsible person where he does things in a good manner. We can say that Ihsan means a Muhsen is sure that Allah is seeing him/her in everything he/she says or does in his life. So, a Muhsen does his best to say and do only what pleases Allah Almighty and conforms to His commands. In Holy Quran, Allah Almighty says: “Indeed, Allah commands justice, good conduct (Ihsan), and giving to relatives (and He) forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded” (Quran, 16: 90).If you enjoy this episode please search for Haqq Dawah Media wherever you play or download your favorite podcast. Also follow us on Twitter @TheHaqqDawahGrp or Facebook /thehaqqdawahgrpUntil next season,Fe Aman Allah

Imam Muhsen Al-Dhalimy of the Islamic Center of Portland Explains the Significance of the 7th Century Martyr, Husayn, and the Popularity of Arbaeen Biblical scholar, Dr. Susan "Elli" Elliott, discusses her book, Family Empires, Roman and Christian, Volume 1.  Imam Muhsen Al-Dhalimy is the spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Portlandon the corner of Denney and Hall in Beaverton. The Islamic Center of Portland is the only Shia Mosque in the Portland Metro.  Imam Al-Dhalimy was born in Iraq and made the pilgrimage to Karbala to mourn Imam Husayn and visit his shrine when doing so was illegal. Since the fall of Saddam Hussein, now between 10 and 20 million people visit the shrine of the grandson of the Prophet every year, making Arbaeen the largest peaceful gathering of human beings on Earth. I, inshallah, will be going on this pilgrimage courtesy of the Husaynia Society of Seattle. Imam Al-Dhalimy will talk about how the walk has changed and what it means for Shia Muslims and Iraq. Also, during the first part of the hour, I speak with Susan “Elli” Elliot who will be hosting a Jesus Seminar on the Road in Beaverton on October 19-20.  She is the author of Family Empires: The Roman Family Empire and Early Christian Responses.  In this book, “Dr. Elliott examines the Roman household form as it was changing during the Augustan era. Augustus relied on his version of that family form to establish his one-man rule of the empire. Dr. Elliott lays out several forms of resistance to the Roman empire and the family model on which it was built.” This program aired on my monthly show, Beloved Community, Friday, October 12th from 9-10 a.m.

Over the span of her 20 year career, Joohi Tahir has had vast exposure in the field of Sales & Marketing across a wide variety of industries.Aside from her corporate, professional accomplishments, her personal passion to advocate for Muslims with Disabilities has led to her appointment as Executive Director of a revolutionary nonprofit organization founded by Sh. Omar Suleiman called MUHSEN: Muslims Understanding & Helping Special Education Needs. With her own family and daughter being affected by disability, she started with small community initiatives, talks, and support groups, leading up to speaking to our Scholars about the need for our communities to be more aware and be made more accessible for our loved ones with Disabilities. The Goal of MUHSEN is to provide a “Special Friendly” environment and build “Masjids of Ihsan” which will be welcoming environments for all. Whether physical, neurological or cognitive disability, we are collectively responsible for caring for these individuals. As a leader of this organization, Joohi advocates and markets the needs for which MUHSEN will build programs and services across N. America.
