Are Earthquakes a Punishment from Allah? With Imam Omar Suleiman

The Thinking Muslim

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2023 73:24

The sadness we feel after the earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria is heightened by our Ummatic feelings of closeness to the worldwide muslim community. Many of those affected have been subject to years of civil war at the hands of a brutal dictator. Sadly, this is yet another disaster that has befallen this Umma and we pray that Allah has mercy on those that died and enter them into a place where there is eternal peace. This week we interview Dr Omar Suleiman to discuss the issue of earthquakes and whether they are a punishment from Allah, as many ascribe to these natural events or whether they are a test. Human beings can never understand the wisdom of Allah (swt) and we are without knowledge of the ultimate good and bad impacts of natural disasters. We ask Dr Suleiman to give us an understanding of the texts from the Quran and sunna that explain these events to us. Sadly, many especially in the West who may have not consolidated their Iman on a strong footing, question the wisdom of Allah and fail to develop the intellectual and spiritual resilience that is required to be a believer. We tackle how to build up this store of resilience. We also take the opportunity to discuss some of his political views on the broader Syrian civil war and the inconsistencies in some political activists. How does Neighborly Faith go about "train(ing) tomorrow's leaders to be faithful and flourish in an increasingly diverse world” and “knowing and serving all of our neighbors.” Is it an Evangelical bait and switch? Yaqeen Institute founder Imam Omar Suleiman said at one of NF's events, “I was and am fine with his (SBC President JD Greear) vision of the hereafter not having space for me, so long as it doesn't become an obstacle to me having space in the here and now.” Is that part of the point of the work Neighborly Faith does? In this episode, Imam Omar Suleiman (from Yaqeen Institute) answers one of the most frequently asked question, i.e I have dips in my Imaan, what to do? I was doing so good in my prayers, all of a sudden I feel low? I don't feel the freshness of my faith? and many more questions like this. Main idea that we need to understand is we all have fluctuations in our feelings, and having faith is one of them. So it's normal to have a dip in your imaan, but what's not is to engage in a major sin or continue in minor sins. In such times we become vulnerable, & that's where Shaytaan kicks in. IF we can learn to hold ourselves in these times of dipping imaan, then Allah S.W.T will make it easy for you further, and bless you more than anyone can imagine. All your prayers which you have been praying hard for months & years, will start coming true, and Allah will bless you in ways we can't even imagine. May Allah make it easy for all of us, and save us from the traps of Shaytaan. May Allah make us among who listen and apply.

Sparked by violent incidents that went viral of Israel's seizure of homes of Palestinians in East Jerusalem and Israeli soldiers firing on worshippers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the march is part of a mass, global solidarity movement that is demanding an end to Israel's system of occupation and apartheid, demanding an end to U.S. military funding to Israel, and calling for a renewed campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions to target the apartheid state. Rev. Celeste interviews Rev. Karen Fry, one of the Spiritual Leaders of Centers for Spiritual Living, Dallas. She's a Science of Mind minister who has a genuine love for all life. Rev. Karen is known for her prosperity consciousness and she is committed to living an abundant life! Karen's father taught her that nothing was hers. She gets to have the energy - the current of life. Money is an expression of this current. She gets to play with this limitless expression. There cannot be a limit in the money. In the 2008 recession, she made more money than she's ever made in her life selling a medical device using spiritual principles. She had a no ceiling income and later became a salaried minister. She did not see herself as limited because she is vigilant in keeping her consciousness aware of unlimited possibilities. She has an e-course called "Money is God in Action". We have to uproot the lies of the past and place our focus on living limitless. Rev. Celeste mentioned Edwene Gaines (https://edwenegaines.wwwhubs.com), who is a prosperity teacher who walks on fire. Karen watched her colleagues in Asheville, NC walk on fire and it was so transformative that she brought the instructor to Dallas. She realized this is for her. She went to Tolly Burkan (tollyburkan.com), who trained Tony Robbins to firewalk, and learned to firewalk from a spiritual perspective because she wants to help people break through barriers. Karen is a certified fire walking instructor. In New Zealand, she bungee jumped off a bridge knowing that the Universe's umbilical cord has her. She saw an energy of lights and held the vision that all is well. It was very freeing. She wants us to know not to let fear stop us, knowing That which is greater than me can do anything.Rev. Karen Fry discovered she had breast cancer seven months after accepting a position as co-spiritual leader and moving to Dallas. Karen used all of her spiritual tools and did a big universal "no" to the cancer. The cancer went away as she forgave herself and moved deeper into loving herself. She asked for the lesson, and rose above the statistics to became cancer-free. Once she fell inlove with herself, she found the love of her life, Rev. Dr. Petra Weldes.Karen started a "Be Love - Pass It On" movement in 2014 after a meditation where she realized that she came here to be boundless love. She made wristbands and t-shirts. It went over really well with teens and others. She continues to ask the question, how can I be love in this moment? The Science of Mind Archives in Colorado has a lot of history and information about spiritual principle. Karen became a member of the board in order for the teachings of Ernest Holmes to last (scienceofmindarchives.com).Rev. Karen is involved with Faith Forward Dallas, an organization that started with Imam Omar Suleiman and AME pastor,  Rev. Michael Waters. People come from different faiths and traditions to stand together.  Starting with the muslim ban, they have stood together at Botham Jean's murder, removed confederate statues in Dallas and gone to the border to support child immigrants with Rev. William Barber. The four areas of focus are immigration, racial equity, gun sense and unsheltered housing solutions.  She finds magic in her life when she is photographing wildlife. It's the closest thing to oneness as she looks through the lens of love at nature. She also finds magic in her 11-month young granddaughter watching her be excited about life in such a pure and joyful way.  Karen finds magic in traveling with Petra.Check out the amazing Science of Mind class at CSL Dallas with Karen's partner, Rev. As the political polarization divides the US population, the once ideas of social progress turned again into securitarian attempts to protect the borders, the job market, the national identity, therefore reviving the White Supremacy mindset. The acceptance of violence, racism and social injustice nurtured the institutionalization of the fears depleting the State engagement to dignity. George Floyd's death crystallized the wrath of the minorities seeking for a systemic change with the unprecedented massive support of the majority. As a Muslim clerical and human rights activist, Imam Dr Omar Suleiman will share his perspectives on the renewal of the new Civil Rights movements. In a discussion with the French activist Dr Maïmonatou Mar, he will talk about the need to tackle the democratic crisis through a two side strategy: radical and human of reformation (top down) and community empowerment (bottom up). From an updated narration of State racism, Imam Dr Omar Suleiman will point at the urgent need for institutional reforms to collectively break free from social injustice. If rooted in a racial American story of White Supremacy, his description of social injustice will echo with other types of nationalisms worldwide, all of them being threats to life of the most deprived. Imam Dr Omar Suleiman will highlight as well the crucial importance of smart intersectional alliances to restore power and dignity of each and everyone through communities. He will illustrate it with his multiple experiences, including the Faith Forward Dallas at Thanks-Giving Square, a multi-faith coalition of clergy for peace and justice operating at the Border.  SPEAKERSImam Dr. Omar Suleiman is a world renowned scholar and theologically driven activist for human rights. He frequently writes for CNN, USA Today, The Guardian, Huffpo, and The Dallas Morning News. His career started in his hometown of New Orleans where he served as the Imam of the Jefferson Muslim Association in New Orleans for 6 years and directed the "Muslims for Humanity" Hurricane Katrina Relief effort. It was in this time that he was noted on a national level as being a strong advocate of community service, interfaith dialogue, and social justice. Most recently, he was recognized by CNN as one of the 25 most influential Muslims in America and included amongst the Fredrick Douglass 200 most influential Americans whose modern day work embody the legacy of the great abolitionist. Maïmonatou Mar, phD, is the cofounder of Gribouilli, the French social venture empowering domestic workers. Gribouilli launched the first community for nannies in Paris. They are key workers but invisible: mainly middle-age women with migration backgrounds who suffered from isolation and the digital divide. Nearly a thousand nannies benefit from information, P2P learning, basic learning and soft skills class for their economic inclusion and access to decent work. Gribouilli offers leadership programs through an Ambassador program for nannies. Ambassadors of Gribouilli therefore collaborate with public-private partners to improve the public policies. They also develop a coop with more inclusive and accessible commercial services to the benefit of the families. The two reflect on their roles as faith leaders amidst the police brutality of the last decade and the effect it has had on their interfaith friendships. Whether it’s offering a shoulder for each others’ sorrow when their global communities are attacked, or working as co-conspirators for justice, Omar and George are an example for everyone on how to join hands with your interfaith allies and power up in the pursuit of peace.
