No matter how you look at World War 2, it was tragic on levels beyond our own comprehension. Life was severed and lost and many parents went their entire lives without confirmation of when or how their children died. The Crane family experienced the same fate in 1944 when their youngest son went missing.  But no one knew he was the shadow walking through Alaska in the middle of winter.  The outdoors are a beautiful that can be filled with light and bliss and many different ways to bring yourself closer to those you love and yourself. But they can also be filled with terror and death, imminent and oppressive. Join me as we dig into these stories that inspire you to be just a little bit more careful while you're in the outdoors. When a place is smack dab in the middle ... You often wonder where it fits in. Such is the peculiar case with the Big Cypress _________.  And yes, I left that blank for the reason that it has contributed to the plight and mystery of the region's ambiguity.  Often times people capitalize the "t" from "the" to add a prestigious flair: The Big Cypress.  But The Big Cypress What?  The blank is alternatively filled in with Basin, Swamp, Watershed, Ecosystem, Physiographic Region or National Preserve.  As for its relation to the adjacent Everglades and its restoration? That changes, too, depending on who you talk to, and on what day.  In sum, the Big Cypress ________ is a unique place that defies normal definitions and most definitely poorly and incorrectly understood by modern-day lines.  If you want to get the ecosystem right, you have to think the whole ecosystem -- and that most definitely includes the Big Cypress half.

During this month celebrating Women's History, we want to focus on the important role Maxine Johnston played in the fight to preserve the Big Thicket, the nation's first (alongside Big Cypress) National Preserve and one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. In our travels, we have always been impressed by the tenacity and dedication of so many volunteers and citizen groups - true democracy in action. We all owe them so much. One such citizen and conservationist champion is Maxine Johnston, who was recently featured in a National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) blog post: These 10 National Parks Wouldn't Exist Without Women. Thanks to Shannon Harris from KVLU Public Radio in Beaumont, TX, who interviewed Maxine Johnston in late 2019, we are able to share an excerpt of Maxine Johnston speaking about her involvement. The episode also features our conversation with the very helpful Ranger we met at the Visitor Center, who reviewed our Junior Ranger badges (you can hear us all take the oath together!) and spoke to us about forest restoration, longleaf pines, and the Kirby Nature Trail. We are grateful to Shelly Vitanza from Lamar University for allowing us to use photos from Lamar University tribute on the occasion of Maxine being selected as the Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal for Lamar University, where she spent more than three decades as a research librarian and then library director. She was honored both for her contributions to the university as well as her dedication and success as a conservation advocate. In fact, today at 93 years young, her LinkedIn profile lists her occupation as “Conservation Gadfly.” We are so thankful for gadflies like Maxine Johnston.
