WORT 89.9FM Madison · Metropolitans: New York Baseball, Class Struggle and the People’s Team A.M. Gittlitz(Photo by David Siffert) Major League Baseball is a multi-billion dollar business venture, with teams owned by venture capitalist billionaires and star players earning upwards of fifty million dollars a year. The idea of any major-league team, let alone the New York Mets, being a true “team of the people” seems, on the face of it, absurd. But baseball, like any other cultural practice, reflects the politics and struggles of the society that produced it. In his new book, avowed anti-capitalist activist and unabashed New York Mets fan A.M. Gittlitz looks at the history of working class movements through the lens of baseball in New York City. The book is “Metropolitans: New York Baseball, Class Struggle and the People's Team” out now from Astra House press. A.M. Gittlitz joined Monday 8 O’Clock Buzz host Brian Standing on April 20, 2026. Joe is solo for this episode and begins discussing what will be a competitive first round playoff series for the Knicks against the Atlanta Hawks (1:05). Then, he talks about the NBA Play-In Tournament and how entertaining the games were last night (11:39). Finally, Joe talks about the early struggles for both the Yankees and Mets to start the MLB season (20:30), & SO much more!
Two weeks into the 2026 MLB season and it is already completely unhinged. Both New York teams are simultaneously on five-game losing streaks — a first in MLB history — and somehow that's not even the wildest part of the week. The Yankees started 8-2 and looked like the class of the AL East. Then the bats went completely silent — a .199 team average, 29th in baseball — and five straight losses followed. The rotation has been elite, but the offense can't cash in. And then Jazz Chisholm Jr., in a contract year where he's demanding $35 million annually, blamed the cold weather for his slow start and then cost his team an extra-innings game by admitting he didn't know the force out rule. His manager's defense? “That's just what he says to reporters.” Which is somehow worse. The Mets aren't in much better shape. Juan Soto is on the IL with a calf strain and not close to being cleared to run. Francisco Lindor — two-time Gold Glover, $341 million man — has been making mental errors his own manager says he's “never seen.” Forgotten outs. Getting picked off adjusting his batting gloves. Leaving second base completely uncovered. Four straight losses and an offense that can't hit with runners in scoring position.Meanwhile in Pittsburgh, Konnor Griffin debuted at 19 years old, played six games, and signed a $140M extension — the richest rookie deal in MLB history, locking him in alongside Cy Young winner Paul Skenes through 2034. José Ramírez hit a home run against his 29th different team AND broke a franchise games-played record that had stood since 1918 — in the same week. Mason Miller still hasn't allowed a run since last season. And Drake Baldwin is leading the league in RBIs through two weeks. Two weeks in. We're already losing our minds.Tap into Episode 721 of the Productive Conversations Podcast—available now on all podcast platforms and YouTubeYankees (4:40)Jazz Chisholm (13:52)Mets (25:19)Konnor Griffin (32:37)Stats of the Week (40:15)Early Standing Surprises (50:30)ABS System thoughts (58:23)---------------#trending #podcast #podcast #podcasts #baseball #mlbBest way to contact our host is by emailing him at productiveconversationspodcast@gmail.com or mbrown3212@gmail.com Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/productive-conversations-with-matt-brown/id1535871441 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7qCsxuzYYoeqALrWu4x4Kb YouTube: @Productive_Conversations Linktree:https://linktr.ee/productiveconversations

BT and Sal opened their show with a passionate, if despairing, breakdown of the concurrent losing streaks afflicting both the Yankees and Mets, lambasting the "circus" of errors, baserunning gaffes, and anemic clutch hitting that has plagued both New York baseball teams. Sal zeroed in on the Mets' perennial struggles against the Braves, while BT meticulously dissected the Yankees' inexplicable offensive slump without Aaron Judge and their abysmal .077 batting average in extra innings, even with the ghost runner. Beyond the current woes, the hosts expressed deep concern over the Yankees' player development, particularly Anthony Volpe's struggles, questioning the organization's strategy of playing prospects out of position and stunting homegrown talent. Amidst the on-field sloppiness and management accountability questions, BT and Sal also grappled with a quintessential New York dilemma, debating whether to attend Lionel Messi's Red Bulls match or David Wright's Mets number retirement ceremony, both slated for July 19th. Despite the grim state of New York baseball, BT and Sal maintained their characteristic high energy and good vibes, promising listeners an uplifting show even in the toughest of times.

Irish Baseball Podcast host Rick Becker sits down one more time with Steve Steinberg to talk about the author's book about Mike Donlin, and some of his other projects. Mike Donlin is such an interesting character that this conversation has lasted three episodes of the show.
Mike Donlin: A Rough and Rowdy Life From New York Baseball Idol to Stage and Screen The Not Old Better Show, Art of Living Interview Series Ladies and gentlemen, picture this: A baseball star so good they called him “Turkey Mike,” a man who could hit, run, and put on a show at the plate like nobody else. A fan favorite, a heartthrob, a natural entertainer. But also—a brawler, a drinker, a man with a temper so fierce he got himself suspended almost as often as he hit home runs. And then? He walked away. Right at the peak of his career, with numbers that could have made him a legend, Mike Donlin did the unthinkable—he left baseball. Not for injury. Not for money. But for love. Her name was Mabel Hite, a Vaudeville star with a dazzling smile and a quick wit. Together, they became one of the most famous couples of their time—packing theaters, charming audiences, and proving that baseball and showbiz weren't so different after all. But their story wasn't all curtain calls and encore performances. Tragedy struck, and Donlin, once the brightest star on both the diamond and the stage, found himself at a crossroads once again. Today, we're diving into this forgotten, fascinating, and downright unbelievable story with baseball historian and award-winning author Steven Steinberg. His new book, available at Apple Books, Mike Donlin: A Rough and Rowdy Life from New York Baseball Idol to Stage and Screen, brings this larger-than-life character back into the spotlight. We'll talk about Donlin's triumphs, fights, Hollywood years, and the love that changed everything. Baseball, Vaudeville, scandal, romance, and a man too big for just one stage—this is going to be a great one. So, grab a seat, and let's get into it. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is The Not Old – Better Show.
