Today, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a special livestream on Substack with Jen Risley, the editor of the Main Street Journal. We're calling it “Jen and Devin Live,” and we hope it marks the beginning of a recurring series to strengthen the ties in our shared community of impact crowdfunding enthusiasts.Jen and I both publish on Substack and share a mission to promote community capital. While we could be viewed as competitors, we see ourselves more as complementary partners. That's why we came together—to cross-promote, build bridges, and amplify the voices in this growing movement. What's New at the Main Street JournalJen highlighted a recent MSJ Extra feature: an in-depth interview with John Abrams, author of the forthcoming book From Founder to Future. John transitioned his company—South Mountain Company, a design, building, and solar firm on Martha's Vineyard—into a worker cooperative. Now retired, he's focused on helping other founders do the same. Jen shared that the response to this piece was overwhelmingly positive, confirming that interest in worker ownership models is growing fast.Updates from Superpowers for GoodOn my end, I shared some exciting updates about Superpowers for Good. Our recent SuperCrowdLA event, which was livestreamed to e360tv and Substack, drove tremendous traffic. But what's been even more rewarding is the success of our new initiative, Super Crowd Voices (read it here, submit your contribution for consideration here). This channel invites new writers to share their perspectives, and it's working better than we imagined. In fact, one of the first posts—by Dorian Dickinson of Funding Hope—became our most-read post ever. His powerful argument for giving investment crowdfunding “a seat at the table” clearly struck a chord. It was particularly rewarding to learn from Jen that our feature on Dorian inspired Main Street Journal to expand their platform listings in their weekly offering summaries. They had initially focused on just a few platforms—but now, they include more, making their coverage even stronger. That kind of cross-pollination is exactly what this collaboration is all about.Shared Admiration for Kathleen MinogueWe also talked about our mutual admiration for Kathleen Minogue and her “Crowdfund Better” methodology. Jen and I both hold her in high regard. Michael Shuman's interview with Kathleen in MSJ Extra—which I was able to read as a paying subscriber—was one of the best practical pieces I've seen. She explains how a rewards-based campaign can serve as a stepping stone to a successful investment crowdfunding raise. Kathleen's approach is a masterclass in how to crowdfund strategically, and Jen shared how Kathleen supported a local crowdfunding initiative in her home region of New Hampshire. It's amazing to see this kind of thought leadership making a real-world impact.Reflections on SuperCrowdLA and a Preview of SuperCrowd25Jen kindly mentioned how much she appreciated the summary I wrote following SuperCrowdLA. She quoted a line I often use: “Capital is not just about dollars. It's about power, purpose, and possibility.” That meant a lot. I shared that we're working on a full book based on the conference's transcripts and insights—something far deeper than a quick summary. We hope to release it by the end of June.I also highlighted some standout speakers from the event:* Doug Willmore, CEO of World Tree, which has raised $17M (including $12M from the crowd) to fund a carbon-sequestering tree farm model.* Sarah Hardwick, former CMO of Aptera, who helped the company raise $140M through Reg CF and Reg A offerings. Her speech was both riveting and deeply insightful.Looking ahead, SuperCrowd25 is coming up on August 21–22, and we're streaming it live again on E360tv. I'm thrilled by how many people discover crowdfunding for the first time through these events. I invited Jen—and Michael Schuman as well—to join us as speakers. Their voices are essential to this community.Closing: Stronger TogetherI closed by encouraging our community to subscribe to Main Street Journal—especially since some of their best content, like the Kathleen Minogue piece, is behind a paywall. It's worth every penny. Jen added that their Monday events roundup is always free, giving folks a way to sample the value before committing. You can subscribe at mainstreetjournal.substack.com or visit their website at mainstreetjournal.org.Jen returned the love, reminding her community to subscribe to Superpowers for Good and promising to keep highlighting our latest work.We both agree: if you're serious about crowdfunding for impact, you need both publications. This partnership is just getting started, and we can't wait to see where it takes us next.Max-Impact MembersThe following Max-Impact Members provide valuable financial support:Carol Fineagan, Independent Consultant | Lory Moore, Lory Moore Law | Marcia Brinton, High Desert Gear | Paul Lovejoy, Stakeholder Enterprise | Pearl Wright, Global Changemaker | Ralf Mandt, Next Pitch | Scott Thorpe, Philanthropist | Matthew Mead, Hempitecture | Michael Pratt, Qnetic | Sharon Samjitsingh, Health Care Originals | Add Your Name HereUpcoming SuperCrowd Event CalendarIf a location is not noted, the events below are virtual.* Impact Cherub Club Meeting hosted by The Super Crowd, Inc., a public benefit corporation, on June 17, 2025, at 1:00 PM Eastern. The former 300-pound computer hacker turned multi-millionaire entrepreneur reveals how he lost half his body weight, built a £140M company, and why most people are unknowingly sabotaging their success. Asprey's controversial views on supplements, sleep tracking and emotional regulation will either change your life or make you very angry. Dave Asprey REVEALS: The vegan diet is a health scam How your body decides your emotions That all human behaviour follows five F-words: Fear, food, fucking, friend and forgiveness Calories don't make you fat How forgiveness is a biological hack How your energy field controls your company's success How venture capitalists remove your rights and equity bit by bit, always claiming it's for your own good or safety BEST MOMENTS "The vegan diet. Straight up health scam. I was a devout vegan, I became a raw vegan... I lost bone density, I lost muscle, and I finally shattered three teeth." "If I can trigger you, it means you're carrying a loaded gun. If you can be triggered, you are not in charge." "Your job as an entrepreneur... you must be the most regulated, stable, peaceful person in the room all the time." "The biggest lie is that calories count... eat a gram of uranium. It has a million calories. You should get fat. But strangely, they don't get fat." Sarah Hardwick, an entrepreneur and expert in equity crowdfunding, is at the forefront of this movement, leveraging her expertise to make investing more accessible to all.Sarah understands firsthand the challenges entrepreneurs face in securing funding. “Traditional fundraising methods often exclude a vast majority of small business owners,” she said. “Equity crowdfunding provides a way for everyday investors to support businesses they believe in while giving founders a viable alternative to venture capital.”Through her work with The Crowd, Sarah helps businesses navigate the complexities of launching successful crowdfunding campaigns. She emphasizes that equity crowdfunding is not just about raising money—it's about building a community of engaged supporters who become brand ambassadors. “When people invest, they feel a sense of ownership. They want to see the business succeed, and they help spread the word,” she explained.Sarah highlighted the importance of transparency and storytelling in crowdfunding. A compelling narrative can make the difference between a successful campaign and one that struggles to gain traction. “Investors connect with authenticity. They want to know who they're backing, why the business matters, and how it will make an impact,” she said. The Crowd itself is leveraging equity crowdfunding to fuel its own growth, showcasing the model's effectiveness. By raising capital from the public, the company practices what it preaches, proving that this funding method can drive meaningful expansion. As more entrepreneurs turn to equity crowdfunding, Sarah believes the financial world is moving toward greater inclusivity. “This is about democratizing investment. It's about allowing more people to participate in wealth creation, not just the elite few,” she said. For founders considering this route, Sarah offers clear advice: Be prepared, be transparent, and engage with your audience. With the right approach, equity crowdfunding can be a powerful tool for growth and impact.tl;dr:Sarah Hardwick shares insights on how equity crowdfunding is transforming access to capital for entrepreneurs. The conversation highlights the importance of transparency and storytelling in building successful crowdfunding campaigns.Sarah explains how The Crowd is leveraging equity crowdfunding to grow and empower other businesses. She reveals her superpower, visionary storytelling, and how it helps businesses connect with investors.Practical advice is shared on crafting compelling narratives to engage investors and build community support. How to Develop Visionary Storytelling As a SuperpowerSarah Hardwick's superpower is visionary storytelling. She has a unique ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate with investors, turning ideas into movements and businesses into community-driven ventures.“A great story isn't just about facts—it's about connection,” Sarah said. “Investors want to know the people behind the company, what drives them, and how their investment can make a difference.” Through her expertise in equity crowdfunding, she has demonstrated how storytelling transforms a fundraising campaign into a movement, making investors feel like they are part of something bigger. One striking example of Sarah's storytelling superpower in action was a campaign she helped structure for a mission-driven startup. The founder had an inspiring backstory but struggled to articulate it in a way that engaged potential investors. Sarah worked closely with them to refine their message, focusing on their journey, their impact, and their vision for the future. With a compelling narrative in place, the campaign exceeded its fundraising goals, proving the power of authentic storytelling. For those looking to develop visionary storytelling as a skill, Sarah offers the following actionable tips:Define your “why” clearly—investors want to understand your deeper purpose.Be authentic—genuine passion and honesty build trust with potential supporters.Keep it simple—clarity and focus make your story easier to remember and share.Use multimedia—videos, images, and testimonials enhance the emotional connection.Engage consistently—interact with your audience and keep them updated throughout your journey.By following Sarah's example and advice, you can make visionary storytelling a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. This week's Sicko Soundoff brought heated debates and bold takes as fans tackled the Pirates' biggest questions. The highlight? A deep dive into a potential Paul Skenes extension. With pre-arbitration leverage, one caller suggested a 7-year, $140M deal—locking up the ace while keeping future flexibility. But would Skenes even consider it? The bullpen also took center stage, with Kyle Finnegan and Craig Kimbrel emerging as intriguing options to bolster late-game security behind David Bednar. Meanwhile, Nick York's potential remains underrated, and concerns over Mitch Keller's future sparked discussion. Should the Pirates trade him before his value dips? With pitchers and catchers reporting soon, optimism (and skepticism) is running high. Want to join the madness? Hop into the NS9 Discord and be part of the next Sicko Soundoff!

Episode 358 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Simon Taylor, Founder & CEO of HYCU. One of the things that I love about this podcast is hearing the stories of entrepreneurs and the ambitious moves they make to build their companies. For example, last week's interview with Brian Liu was a great example where he and his Co-Founder cold called and got the most recognizable lawyer on the planet - that being Robert Shapiro - involved with LegalZoom in the early days of the company. Simon's story is also legendary. At the point of having an MVP, they wanted to partner with a fast growing company called Nutanix. He flew out to the company's offices in California and unannounced, he asked to speak to the CEO. After pitching his company and convincing team members during that initial unannounced call, the CEO did finally sit with him and after building a backup solution for Nutanix, a partnership was established and they were off and running. HYCU is a leader in the multi-cloud and SaaS data protection as a service industry. The company has raised $140M in VC funding to date. In this podcast, we cover: * A discussion around leveraging a partnership model for a company's GTM strategy and how to build it with the right mindset and approach. * Simon's background story, including receiving a signed book from legendary computer entrepreneur An Wang, the founder of Wang Laboratories, when his family moved to the U.S. * Starting his career in cubicle jobs and how he learned the importance of rigor like his experience as a 401K rep answering phones and how it helped shape him as an entrepreneur. * Building his first company in Prague, an IT outsourcing company which was acquired by Comtrade and then his next company, a monitoring tools company that was acquired by Citrix. * The full lifecycle story of HYCU and all the details about their platform. * The benefits of raising capital from corporate VCs. * And so much more. Later in the hour Chase and Big Joe discussed DeAndre Hopkins' contract after the big news of Justin Jefferson signing a $140 million contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings for four years. To end the hour, Chase and Big Joe read off some text from some listeners about the first car they ever owned.
We had a family with a $140M+ net worth at our recent 2024 NYC Super Summit - and what they suggested was a strategy that stuck with us, which was to listen to your gut. Even if you are unsure why, if something feels off with someone who is trying to close a deal with you, then you should trust your instincts and run the other way. Maybe they are not enjoyable to be around. Maybe they are not respectable. Or maybe they are just not your type of person. Either way, when it comes to closing deals with potential partners, do not just trust the numbers - trust the way you feel about them as a partner. Tune in to get Richard C. Wilson's full thoughts on this crucial strategy for narrowing down the best opportunities through your own intuition.---------------------------Welcome to the "Private Investor Club - 7,500 Investors. Follow Up 02:25 Microsoft Agreed to Pay Inflection $650 Million While Hiring Its Staff Listener Note: Payway article Last week, we talked about Microsoft hiring the Inflection Co-Founder Mustafa Suleyman and their Chief scientist, as well as most of the 70-person staff. Inflection had previously raised 1.5B, and so this all seemed strange as part of their shift to an AI Studio or a company that helps others train AI models. Now, it has been revealed that Microsoft has agreed to pay a 620M dollar licensing fee, as well as 30M to waive any legal rights related to the mass hiring. As well as it renegotiated a $140M line of credit that aimed to help inflection finance its operations and pay for the MS services. 03:22 Justin – “…that explains the mystery that we talked about last week for those who were paying attention.” General News 05:17 Redis switches licenses, acquires Speedb to go beyond its core in-memory database Redis, one of the popular in-memory data stores, is switching away from its Open Source Three-Clause BSD license. Instead it is adopting a dual licensing model called the Redis Source Available License (RSALv2) and Server Side Public Licensing (SSPLv1). Under the new license, cloud service providers hosting Redis will need to enter into a commercial agreement with Redis. The first company to do so was Microsoft. Redis also announced the acquisition of Speedb (speedy-bee) to take it beyond the in memory space. This isn't the first time that Redis has changed the licensing model. In 2018 and 2019, it changed the way it licensed Redis Models under the Redis Source Available License v1.

In any business, replacing a great founder is no easy feat. Birthing something is very different to inheriting it, so there's pressure on both the founder and successor to make the transition a great one. On one end, you have someone handing over what they built over decades, and on the other, someone with huge shoes to fill. Sometimes, the best person for the job is the one who was unknowingly groomed for it by osmosis her entire life. That's how Bob Kilinski appointed his daughter, Anna to take over his successful KW regional center. What is so special about this transition of power? How do you take over such a successful operation? What's the process of taking over like? In this episode, the father-daughter duo share how the decision was made and how to build and maintain a thriving business. Real estate is less about houses and more about process and people and bringing a solution to the table. -Anna Kilinski Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode -Survive, progress, arrive What can sailing teach us about running real estate businesses in today's market? -Real estate isn't actually about homes How did Bob Kilinski get into the business of running real estate offices without a background of selling homes? -Don't play small by being stingy with your gifts What made Anna Kilinski go after the opportunity of taking over the regional center her father built? Guest Bio Anna Kilinski Anna Kilinski is a Realtor with over $140M in Sales as the #1 KW Team in Georgia in 2023. She is a fearless leader, barsetter, visionary and coach, who recently and most notably has taken on the role of Regional Operating Partner of the “award-winning” Southeast Region for Keller Williams, the largest and pack leader in the KW franchise. A New Orleans native who was practically born into real estate, she swore she'd never join the family's favorite industry, but that quickly changed after she bought her first house at 25 (a duplex for that matter) and never looked back. In 2018, Anna's unrivaled Atlanta reputation and no-nonsense, all-in approach to serving her clients earned her the Realtor-host spot on Bravo® TV's “Buying It Blind”, in which she bought new homes on her clients' behalf (and with their savings)—but without them actually seeing the properties. She's earned the Millionaire Real Estate Agent accolade year over year since 2014, and Anna K Intown is consistently ranked a Top 10 Team by the Atlanta Board of Realtors, and her team #1 in Georgia for KW in 2022 serving over 200 clients and $140M+ in residential sales annually. If you're in the KW world, you'll appreciate knowing she runs a TRUE MREA & “profitable” model – and is passionate about others learning to do the same. Bob Kilinski Bob has 40+ years of experience in operating, managing and teaching in the real estate brokerage industry. As the Vice President of a prestigious real estate company in New Orleans, Gertrude Gardner Realtors, he headed up both the residential and the commercial divisions, helping to expand the company to 22 offices throughout the city and surrounding areas. Bob opened his own Keller Williams market center in New Orleans in June 1998, which grew to 75 agents in one year. Because of his enthusiasm for the Keller Williams concept, he bought the rights to develop the Southeast Region which includes Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.
