James Lee is a 16-year-old classical and jazz pianist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. A junior at Wilsonville High School, James is an active member of the Symphonic Band/Pep Band as a percussionist, the Jazz Band as a pianist and drummer, and regularly accompanies classmates for OMEA competitions. This summer, he graduated from the OMTA Syllabus program “with distinction” under Heidi Evans, having also participated in solo and concerto piano festivals, masterclasses with renowned pianists Jeeyoon Kim and Kate Boyd, and recently earned honorable mention in the 2024 OMTA State Composition Festival.
Ron Omani Carson shares his hero's journey and the lessons he learned along the way. He discusses the importance of showing up and holding space for both joy and pain. Sean Smith is the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Illinois and a recent graduate of that program. Sean recounts his experiences at his first job, describes the transition from high school teacher to graduate student, and shares his opinion about the larger issues facing music education. Sean completed a year of coursework at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York prior to coming to the University of Illinois to continue his Master's degree with Dr. Stephen Peterson, which he finished in 2017. He has six years of public school teaching experience as Director of Bands in the Conneaut Area City Schools in Conneaut, Ohio. While in Conneaut, Sean taught bands from fifth grade through high school, directed the Conneaut High School Marching Band, and developed the music technology, guitar, and piano courses offered by the high school. Before teaching, Sean studied at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio, where he received a Bachelor of Music Education. Sean received much conducting experience at Baldwin Wallace as Conducting Apprentice for the Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble and student conductor for the Brass Choir and the Contemporary Ensemble. Sean’s professional experiences include serving as Music Director of the Euclid Civic Orchestra and working as a National Director for Bugles Across America. In August of 2015, The Instrumentalist Magazine published an article Sean authored titled “The Ideal Marching Schedule.” He had previously presented on the topic at the Ohio Music Education State Conference and at the Whalen Symposium at Ithaca College.
Ben Spalding has two passions in his life: his family and music. Ben grew up in the Winton Woods school district, where he met his future wife, Kylene, who shares his love of music. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Ben taught music at Winton Woods schools. Ben now lives with his wife and two daughters in Centerville, Ohio. Ben is an avid supporter of a cappella music and recently wrote a book with Deke Sharon and Brody McDonald, called A Cappella (available at Amazon.com and other resellers). He is a founding member of the A Cappella Education Association and is associated with several other a cappella organizations. He is an instructor at Camp A Cappella and a clinician for vocal groups across the country. Ben, along with Deke Sharon, has recently formed a professional a cappella group called Vocalight. Vocalight is comprised of award-winning vocalists and performers from the Dayton, Ohio area. Ben is the head Choral Director at Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio. At CHS, Ben directs all of the vocal groups and is also the music director for the fall and spring musicals. Under his direction, the Symphonic Choir has received Superior ratings at OMEA since 2011. A legend in the state of Oregon, Patrick Vandehey joins me to discuss believing in music education with passion. Prior to the PSU position he taught 14 years at George Fox University, a small private liberal arts college in Newberg, Oregon and 23 years teaching in area public high schools. Mr. Vandehey received his Bachelors of Art and Bachelors of Music from the University of Washington, and a Masters of Teaching Music at Portland State University. Mr. Vandehey is a Past-President of the Oregon Band Directors Association and serves as chairman of the Adjudication Training Board of OBDA. He served for two years as the Band Liaison to the Oregon Schools Activity Association. He has served twice on the Oregon Music Education Association’s Board as Band Chair and served on the OMEA Executive board as President in 2005-2006. In 1993 Mr. Vandehey was the State, Regional and National recipient of the ASBDA- Stanbury Award for Outstanding Young Band Director. In 2000 he was inducted into the Band World Legion of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Also in 2000 he was named one of Oregon’s top ten Music Educators by the Oregon Music Educators Association in the Teaching Music Magazine. In 2002 Mr. Vandehey received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. He is a founding member of the Oregon Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, and in 2006 was inducted into the Northwest Bandmaster’s Association. Mr. Vandehey was named the Oregon’s Outstanding Music Educator in 2010 by the Oregon Music Educators Association. Mr. Vandehey is married to Kristin, his wife of 40 years and they have two daughters, both of whom are educators.
