“At the end of that first year, I did a pops concert. I developed the formula that I use now, which is to make it sound a lot like the actual songs. You give a lot of soloists opportunities to sing solos, especially in the verses which are harder because of the syncopation. We had a band that we hired: some horns, a rhythm section. The kids loved it, and we had 750 people come watch it.”J.D. Frizzell is the Director of Fine Arts and Director of Vocal Music at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, TN. “Contemporary commercial music is closer to the students' everyday musical culture. There's that component of culturally relevant pedagogy that both show choir and vocal jazz meet. They are a bit more naturally motivating to a majority of students, and we honor the musical culture of the United States and our popular styles from the last 100 years when we teach these things."Ryan Deignan is Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Minnesota Duluth where he leads the flagship University Singers and the award-winning vocal jazz ensemble Lake Effect and teaches voice lessons, ear training, and vocal pedagogy. Deignan is the Artistic Director of the Twin Ports Choral Project and was a fellow at the 2022 Baylor International Choral Conducting Masterclass. In addition to teaching and conducting, Deignan performs as a professional vocalist. He performed with the Madison Choral Project in 2023 and sang with the new Baton Rouge choir Red Shift in their 2020 Southern ACDA performance, where he also served as tenor soloist. Deignan sang with Dallas' Orpheus Chamber Singers and Dallas Bach Society, and community choir Denton Bach Society as tenor soloist for their performance of Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. At the high school level, Deignan was Director of Choirs for the West Des Moines Valley High School choral program of 350 students, seven traditional choirs, two show choirs, and four jazz choirs. Under his direction, Valley Singers performed at the 2016 North Central ACDA Convention in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Prior to West Des Moines, Deignan was Associate Director of Vocal Music at Cedar Rapids Washington High School where he led a Slice of Jazz to the 2012 Iowa Vocal Jazz Championship.Deignan holds a BA in Vocal Performance from Luther College, an MA in Music Education from the University of Iowa and DMA in Choral Studies with a cognate field in Vocal Pedagogy from the University of North Texas. To get in touch with Ryan, you can email him at rpdeignan@gmail.com or find him on Facebook (@rdeignan) or Instagram (@rpdeignan).Choir Fam wants to hear from you! "My goal as an artist, conductor, and thought leader is to make sure that we always start with 'why are we singing? Are we picking these pieces because people are telling us that we should, because they've been prescribed by lists? Are we picking these pieces because these are culturally relevant topics for the people who are part of our communities of singing? Why are we doing it?' Sometimes we should ask, 'Why are we still doing it?'" Adrian Dunn is a critically acclaimed singer, composer, and conductor. Mike Jensen, Professor of Vocal Music at Wartburg College, was an extremely active man in his late-thirties when a tonic-clonic seizure, formerly known as a grand mal seizure, struck out of nowhere—leaving him and his wife, Jennifer, searching for answers. Raising kids, in the midst of a demanding career, and with a high-deductible insurance policy, Mike pushed off the doctor's visit, and chalked it up to an isolated event. Months later, the diagnosis of brain cancer seemed absurd when the family received the news. Having the support of their entire community, the Jensen family vowed to never give up, and they planned to defeat the brain cancer. Mike Jensen ultimately lost his battle with brain cancer, and he was called Home on Friday, September 30, 2022, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer. Hear the extreme strength it took to never give up, despite the grim conditions. As we reveal that no matter the circumstances we're dealt, we still have the ability to write our own fairytale ending.

Anita Newman has taught in Massachusetts and Rome, as a Kindergarten, First Grade, Bilingual and all-levels Vocal Music teacher. As a teacher of young children she had the opportunity to closely observe students with special needs struggle to come to terms with physical and academic limitations. She understands learning disabilities and how they are overcome (not eradicated). This episode of "Notes on Bach" is sponsored by the American Bach Society. This month we hear from Dr. Mark Peters and Dr. Reginald Sanders about the complex subject of meaning in Bach's vocal music, which can emerge from compositional choices, listener reception, and an intersection of these and other factors. Dr. Peters and Dr. Sanders edited an essay collection on this subject, Compositional Choices and Meaning in the Vocal Music of J.S. Bach, published by Lexington Books.
Back from Covid and stronger than ever! (?) This week's guest is mezzo soprano and fellow denizen of the South Bronx Linda Collazo. I was super happy to catch her in between engagements because she is busy as hell. We talk about her background and development as a singer, the never ending struggle for motivation, and take a lengthy detour to talk about the difficulty of balancing outreach in tough neighborhoods like the ones we hail from. Linda is great and to check out some of her past work and her upcoming performances, hit up lindacollazo.com.
Knowing the various rules and conventions that govern the setting of lyrics in vocal music is a good start, but if you use music notation software, there's more to learn. In this second of a two-part episode, Philip Rothman and David MacDonald discuss how to actually apply those principles in the leading scoring programs: Finale, Dorico, and Sibelius. There's a surprising degree of overlap in the way that these programs approach lyrics, but also some crucial differences. We first start by talking about how the software conceptualizes lyrics, and where to find them in the program. We discuss the various ways that you can actually get the lyrics into the file: typing into the score, copying and pasting, and importing. A few small but useful details don't go overlooked: hard spaces, hyphens, elisions are important elements of lyrics but are special cases when it comes to inputting text. Then, how do you edit the lyrics once they're into the score? Lyric settings are found in a variety of places in the software — document options, engraving rules, text style definitions, default positions — and we help you find your away around and try to avoid some common pitfalls. Hyphenation, or syllabification, is a hot-button topic and we offer up several tips of our own as well as those from podcast listeners. We also take a few questions and address those at the end of the episode. More on Scoring Notes: Lyrics and vocal music, part 1 Tricks for lyrics in Finale 3 helpful plug-ins for working with lyrics in Sibelius Differentiating staff text, system text, and lyrics in Sibelius Traditional lyrics beaming and slurs on melismas Adding extra lines of lyrics Making lyrics something to sing about Elsewhere: The Lyric Hyphenator
Working with lyrics and vocal music presents a special set of challenges and opportunities to burnish your music engraving skill set. In this first of a two-part episode, Philip Rothman and David MacDonald discuss many of the conventions and principles that govern lyric text. Staff position, alignment, and spacing must all be carefully considered when setting vocal text, and we sort through the best approaches for presenting the music clearly in relation to the lyrics. Beaming is an issue that has often confounded notesetters — specifically syllabic beaming, where the beams reflect the text instead of the rhythmic groups — and we talk about the change from traditional to modern notation and how best to handle melismatic passages. Fonts, always a favorite topic of conversation on Scoring Notes, are again worthy of exploration, and why certain fonts are better than others for lyrics. We offer our suggestions there, and also discuss the topics of hyphenation and word extensions that are necessary components of any instance where vocal text is present. There's much more we cover in this episode, and then in the next episode, we'll talk about where in the music notation software you can find the settings to control these various aspects and some tips to achieve good results. Some shared experience about my Musical career, Tips about Vocal Music!!
Monday, 14 February 2022, 10 – 11am 'Historically Informed Performance (HIP), Vocal Music of the Late Baroque, and the Employment of Female Musicians' a talk by Dr Simon Trezise as part of the School of Creative Arts Research Forum in association with the Trinity Long Room Hub. The School of Creative Arts Research Forum meets fortnightly at 10am on Mondays during term and is led by the School's doctoral students. The aim of the Forum is to give a space for School researchers, both staff and postgraduate students, to share their ideas in a supportive environment. It is also an opportunity for the School to hear about the research of colleagues both from within TCD and outside who share our research interests. In line with the research agenda of the School, talks will encompass traditional research and practice-based research and will be followed by Q&A. The past half century has witnessed great changes in the performance of late Baroque vocal music (along with much other ‘early' music) by the application of a historicist, evidence-based approach. That this approach has sought to recreate the sound of early performances through carefully produced Urtexts, study of theoretical treatises, restoration or reconstruction of original instruments, and much more is acknowledged, but the HIP movement has its blind spots, where historical evidence is overlooked or distorted. A few instances of this are described, concluding with some observations on the employment of female musicians. Dr Simon Trezise is a retired Associate Professor of the Music Department at Trinity College Dublin.
Matt Webber is a Vocal Music Teacher that has been teaching children and adults for over 19 years. He also established and directs his own men's acapella chorus group called Smorgaschorus. During this episode, Matt illustrates his career as a musician and mentor, and also explains the importance of music and how it can enhance people's lives.
Welcome to Week 3 of Advent - the time which the Christian church uses to prepare for the great celebration of Christmas. The coming of Jesus Christ as a helpless baby - a human like us - sharing our earthly life, but leading us to an everlasting life - is often likened to the darkness of our world being driven out by the light of Christ. So it's appropriate that, at this time, we celebrate the Feast of St Lucy - Sankta Lucia - which falls on 13th December. We do this with a short Service of Light - a partnership between Birmingham Cathedral, and the Church of Sweden - with some glorious music from the Ex Cathedra Academy of Vocal Music, with soloist Charis Burden. And what would make someone cheerfully give away £2,000,000 - yes two million pounds? Not a lottery win - but money that's been earned ...... we have the answer - in conversation with David Dorricott. Plus there's a huge notice board of carol services, Christingles, concerts and more ...... Items for the notice board, and requests for your favourite hymns, are always welcome - email me - judithley@manxradio.com

Manish Vyas: India, its Paths, Traditions, Yoga, Music, Mantra, Spirituality
Following the previous interview with Gundecha Brothers, who dedicated their lives to continuing this style of music, we present the part II of the talk, where among other interesting insights, the main topics covered are:The importance of Sanskrit and the connection between Dhrupad and this language, the three notes used in the Vedic chanting style, and the difference between mantra chanting and mantra singing.Dhrupad claims the distinction of being the oldest form of Indian Classical music heard today, its origin can be traced back to the chanting of Vedic hymns and mantras. The birth of Dhrupad as we know it today coincided with the Bhakti movement and consequently was more devotional in nature. It was rendered in temples facing the the Divinity full of devotion and bhaav, this was the genesis of what became known as Haveli Dhrupad/Sangeet. Dhrupad is a body of spiritual and mystical knowledge to be practiced with devotion (Bhakthi) and dedication (Shraddha). It is primarily an act of submission to one's inner spirit, not a tool for entertainment. The Gundecha Brothers from Ujjain, India are classical vocalists of the Dhrupad genre of the Dagar Vani (a tradition of classical Dhrupad of 20 generations tracking back to Swami Haridas.) From 1985 to 2019 the duo consisted of brothers Umakant Gundecha and Ramakant Gundecha and were awarded the Padma Sri for art for 2012. Following the death of Ramakant Gundecha in 2019, his son Anant began to perform with Umakant in the Gundecha Bandhu. They also run a Dhrupad institute outside Bhopal, India, where they teach students from all over the world according to the guru–shishya tradition, or parampara ("lineage"), denoting a succession of teachers and disciples."Dhrupad is the search of the ultimate, the search for a true sound, the eternal sound, the sound of the cosmos. Dhrupad is Nada Yoga - the yoga of sound. It is the best way to get yourself into a calm, peaceful state of mind." Umakant Gundecha"In Dhrupad, we sing the notes in their pure form. Both the performers as well as the listeners experience the life energy in these notes. Dhrupad is therefore really about going deep into the essence of everything, including oneself. You can see yourself through Dhrupad." Ramakant Gundecha
Agata Żelechowska is a researcher interested in music psychology and body movement. In this conversation we speak about music-induced movement, the human voice, the menstrual cycle and Slavic songs. Agata even does a beautiful demonstration of some of the songs. Here are the Slavic songs she sang: Pusta mladost (Bulgaria) Rasti, rasti moj zeleni bore (Serbia) Letila zozula (Ukraine) Jurija, ustavai rana (Belarus) Oj, gorzaline pilbym (Poland) Here is a note from Agata regarding the folk songs: "Such folk songs don't have copyrights and it is difficult to attribute authorship, since they are usually passed on orally from generation to generation. However, I would like to credit people that passed on these songs to me, either in person or through their records. I learned "Pusta mladost" from Kasia Pakosa, "Rasti, rasti moj zeleni bore" from Laboratorium Pieśni, "Letila zozula" from Drewo, "Jurija ustavai rana" from Olga Jemialjanczyk and "Oj, gorzaline pilbym" from Zofia Bernad. Thank you for sharing these fascinating songs and sorry for any variations I introduced while trying to recreate them. I would also like to credit Fundacja OVO for sparking the joy of slavic folk songs in me and my dear Wiedmy for keeping that spark burning bright." Music by Kosy, Pysh, Lyra Pramuk and Björk too. The latest installment in a multi-album series with Navona Records, CARTHAGE offers six striking pieces by composer James Primosch that confront the most elemental questions of Western philosophy. Internationally recognized and prolific, Primosch is the 2020 winner of The Virgil Thomson Award for Vocal Music from The American Academy of Arts and Letters. CARTHAGE opens with Journey, a solemn meditation in which the men of The Crossing chant text based on the work of 13th-century monk and mystic Meister Eckhart: "There is a journey you must take. / It is a journey without destination. / There is no map. / Your soul will lead you. / And you can take nothing with you." The title track, Carthage, draws on prose from Marilynne Robinson's novel Housekeeping, a work that employs the devastated city of Carthage as a metaphor for desire and imagination: "For to wish for a hand on one's hair is all but to feel it." Following is Mass for the Day of St. Thomas Didymus. Here, four soloists sing the Latin Mass texts, while the main choir sings Denise Levertov’s cycle of poems which gives the work its title. In pulling together these texts, Primosch celebrates the feast of St. Thomas Didymus—better known as “doubting Thomas”—plumbing the depths between unbelief and faith in which true spirituality so often resides. More works inspired by questions of spirit and faith round out the program, with spiralling ecstatically - a setting of a poem of E.E. Cummings - and Two Arms of the Harbor, drawing on the musings of Thomas Merton. The album closes with One with the Darkness, One with the Light, a setting of poetry by Wendell Berry.
