Known as the Father of Contemporary Acappella, Deke Sharon is the man responsible for bringing contemporary a cappella music into the mainstream.  Perhaps best known as the music producer for the Pitch Perfect Trilogy and NBC's The Sing Off, which launched the career of the now multi-platinum Grammy winning group Pentatonix. He was arranger, on-site music director and vocal producer for all three of Universal's hit films in the Pitch Perfect franchise. Sojourner Brown is an actor based in New York City. She recently joined the cast of HADESTOWN on Broadway, and she has also been seen on Disney Channel, NBC, ABC's Magical Christmas Celebration, Freeform, as a guest artist on season 16 of American Idol, and as a vocalist on the Incredibles 2 soundtrack. Sojourner worked as a singer for Walt Disney Records as the alto in DCappella, Disney Music Group's a cappella group that has racked up millions of views on their YouTube videos and digital single releases. She performed with DCappella at the Hollywood Bowl acting in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, toured across Japan and North America with the group in 2019, and headlined at Carnegie Hall for Deke Sharon's “Total Vocal” concert.Originally from small-town Lincoln, Nebraska, Sojourner has always felt called to the arts as a platform for storytelling, a means of self-expression, and a catalyst for social change. Deke Sharon, often called “the father of contemporary a cappella,” has made it his life’s work to bring vocals-only music to the masses. As director of the Tufts ensemble the Beelzebubs in the early 1990s, his experimental take on a Peter Gabriel song—with voices standing in for instruments—inspired a new era in a cappella performance. Sharon has also helped popularize a cappella through movies like "Pitch Perfect," television, and even Broadway. Earlier this year, Sharon was back at Tufts for a residency where he coached nine singing groups, culminating in a first-of-its-kind all-Tufts a cappella concert. In between rehearsals, he sat down to talk about his career and his mission to create harmony through harmony.

Deke Sharon ladies and gentlemen! This guy is a super awesome guy! He is a super awesome friend. I loved this interview! Deke started the Contemporary A Cappella Society in his dorm room. There is so much to list and I didn't want to miss any of them so... Instead of trying to list all of his amazing work I just reached over and grabbed his bio. Take a look! Deke produced “The Sing-Off“ worldwide (USA, Netherlands, China, South Africa), which had the highest ratings of any new, unscripted television show in the US in 2009, and was the third highest rated show on NBC in 2010. In addition, Deke served as arranger, on-site music director and vocal producer for Universal’s “Pitch Perfect“ & “Pitch Perfect 2“ & “Pitch Perfect 3“ starring Anna Kendrick & Rebel Wilson. Deke founded the Contemporary A Cappella Society while in college, and is responsible for many seminal a cappella programs, including the CARAs (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, ICCAs (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella), BOCA (Best of College A Cappella Compilations), the first contemporary a cappella conferences (The A Cappella Summit), the Contemporary A Cappella League, the professional ensembles Voasis and Vocalosity, and Camp A Cappella. His latest project for Disney – D Cappella – launched in 2018. He is also contemporary a cappella’s most prolific arranger, having arranged over 2,000 songs, with many of them in print worldwide with Hal Leonard/Contemporary A Cappella Publishing. He has written 5 books: “A cappella Arranging” (2012), “A Cappella” (2015), “The Heart of Vocal Harmony” (2016), “A Cappella Warmups for Pop and Jazz Choir” (2017) and “So You Want To Sing A Cappella” (2017). Ben Spalding has two passions in his life: his family and music. Ben grew up in the Winton Woods school district, where he met his future wife, Kylene, who shares his love of music. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Ben taught music at Winton Woods schools. Ben now lives with his wife and two daughters in Centerville, Ohio.   Ben is an avid supporter of a cappella music and recently wrote a book with Deke Sharon and Brody McDonald, called A Cappella (available at Amazon.com and other resellers).  He is a founding member of the A Cappella Education Association and is associated with several other a cappella organizations.  He is an instructor at Camp A Cappella and a clinician for vocal groups across the country.   Ben, along with Deke Sharon, has recently formed a professional a cappella group called Vocalight. My guest today is Amanda Newman. Amanda has served as Executive Director of Varsity Vocals for more than a decade, dedicating her career to promoting, encouraging, and providing unique performance opportunities for young musicians. Amanda has extensive experience producing educational and entertaining concerts, festivals, and competitions, as well as handling recorded music distribution and production.   In her capacity as Executive Director, Amanda has brokered high-profile licensing and development agreements, facilitating the use of the ICCA brand and related properties in the major motion picture Pitch Perfect as well as the development of Sing It On, a docu-series produced by CORE Media Group (American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance) that follows college a cappella groups on their journey through the ICCA tournament. Amanda serves as Co-Executive Producer on the series, which debuted in 2015 on the Pop Network.   Under Amanda’s leadership, the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) tournament has more than tripled in size and currently features 3,500 singers from more than 300 competing groups each year. Amanda was also responsible for the creation and development of the International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) in 2006, a program that has significantly expanded since its inception and has helped foster a passion for a cappella in thousands of high school students.   And this year, Varsity Vocals created The Open, a competition that encourages singers to bring together groups of any age, experience or origin to form a cappella “dream teams.” By giving them a stage — and a cash prize of $25,000 to jump start their professional career, our programs encourage young people to sing together throughout their lives. Today we talk to the father of contemporary a cappella, Deke Sharon. In college, Deke decided to make a career of contemporary a cappella.[22] even though people laughed at him [23] and thought he was crazy for doing so. Since then, he’s arranged for The Social Network, and served as music director and arranger for Pitch Perfect 1 and 2, the sing off, and now his new show Pitch Slapped premiered this week on Lifetime. In this episode, we talk to Deke about how you can design a whole new industry based on passion and perseverance.
