The Floresville Independent School District [ISD] has announced Chase Failing as the new band director for Floresville High School. Failing will replace Jim Cathey, who will retire at the end of the 2025-26 school year. Failing brings a strong background in music education, instrumental performance, and program leadership to Floresville ISD. He currently serves as head band director at Poth High School, where he oversees all aspects of the district's band program. The Floresville High School Band Boosters invite community members, band alumni and parents, and the Floresville Independent School District community to join them Thursday, May 21, to honor high school Band Director Jim Cathey. Cathey is retiring after leading the Mighty Tiger Band for more than 20 years. He came to the Floresville ISD in 2005. Cameron Jerde finds a rare break in his packed schedule to sit down with me for an insightful and inspiring conversation.Cameron and I met Boy Scouts as kids. After our time there, he poured his energy into various pursuits — one of which was music. She explains how Booster Clubs, as independent nonprofits, can collaborate effectively while maintaining clear roles and boundaries. Robin offers practical strategies—from holding quarterly meetings and setting budget boundaries to navigating privacy concerns and involving coaches in board succession planning. This week we continue with episode five of our six-part series looking at recruiting students for your band program as Nick Averwater talks with Brent Hopper, Nathan Anderson, and Brandan Bakkala. Brent is Middle School Band Director at Lakeland Preparatory School in Lakeland, TN, which is a town of around 14,000 located just northeast of Memphis. Nathan is a band director at Greene County Tech in Paragould, a city of 30,000 in northeast Arkansas. Brandan is Band Director at Valley View High School in Jonesboro, which is the fifth largest city in the Arkansas, with a population of just over 80,000, and is also located in the northeastern part of the state.In this episode we'll learn about the similar ways in which these directors begin thinking about recruiting for next year on the first day of school in the current year. They'll also tell us about the ways they use short videos and social media to reach out to potential band members.Our conversation was recorded January 3, 2025. In light of Janis Stockhouse's unexpected death at the tail end of 2024, we're re-posting Kirk's 2019 interview with her for anyone who might want to listen to it.Janis started teaching at North high school in Bloomington, Indiana, in the early 1980s. It was a time when "jazz education" as a concept was still a relatively new thing.
