“I don't have a sound that I'm trying to make the choir fit into. I'm trying to understand and uncover the palette of sounds that are in front of me and then expand our sense of what we can sound like. This happens through the community building process, because the more we honor each individual and allow them to bring themselves into that rehearsal space, then the fuller and richer we are.”Dr. Joel Tranquilla (he/him/his) is a conductor and music educator noted for his versatile musicianship and creative programming. Originally from Fredericton, Joel is thrilled to have returned home to assume the position of Artistic Director of the Halifax Camerata Singers and Chorus Master of Symphony Nova Scotia. A singing member of the Canadian Chamber Choir since 2007, he was named the ensemble's Associate Conductor in 2013. As such, he contributes to the programming and long-term artistic visioning of that organization. British Conductor Tess Jackson is the Associate Conductor of the National Youth Orchestra. Originally a violinist, Tess was inspired to take up conducting aged just fourteen, eventually going on to study music at Cambridge University and then a Masters in Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music. Some highlights of the upcoming season include her symphonic debut with the Philharmonia, West Side Story at Volksoper Vienna, and she has recently been assisting Enrique Mazzola at the Lyric Opera Chicago. In this episode, Tess gives us an insight - through the eyes of an artist in the early days of her career - into the various roles a conductor can play; and how she had to challenge her own self-perception in order to find confidence as a very young conductor. She also talks about her recent debut at this year's Proms with the National Youth Orchestra, and the incredible role that the orchestra played in her own development when she herself was a member.-------------------Tess's links:WebsiteInstagram-------------------Follow The Classical Circuit on InstagramDid you enjoy this episode? What up, Beasts? Welcome back to the show. Today I am hanging out with my old friend, old pal Myk Price! Myk was born on a Tuesday, but he wasn't born LAST Tuesday, so don't try and get smart, Bucko! Myk was born in Queens, New York, and moved with his family to Southern California just before Neil Armstrong did his "One Giant Leap for Mankind" bit. Somewhat of a musical prodigy, he earned a music scholarship at the age of ten for a private school in Northridge, California, where he learned the majority of his musical instruments and vocal training. As a singer, Myk has performed at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion with the Los Angeles Master Chorale, as well as an instrumentalist and singer for an A&E documentary on the Titanic. Myk was Associate Conductor for the New Valley Symphony Orchestra, the San Fernando Valley Master Chorale, and co-creator of the Celtic international music group, Sheer Pandemonium. Currently, Myk is the Board of Directors President and performer for the Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra, based in Mar Vista, and as of 2022, has been performing across the country as a professional Santa Claus. As always, I hope something lands with you today. I hope something you hear tugs on your heart-strings and/or I hope you laugh. Allyson Devenish uncovers the remarkable story of an African American composer and musician who made his life in London and Paris in the early twentieth century. Edmund Thornton Jenkins was a composer, musician and band leader from Charleston in South Carolina who travelled to London in 1914. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music for seven years and became a sub-professor. In 1919, at Wigmore Hall, he conducted his own work, A Folk Rhapsody, which incorporated themes from spirituals and songs of the Gullah fisherman of his native Charleston. As well as composing some of the earliest music in the European concert tradition to incorporate jazz rhythms and the folk melodies and spirituals of his home town, Edmund was also wildly successful as a dance band leader and recorded some of the earliest British jazz records in 1921 playing clarinet and saxophone. His early death, in 1926, far from home, meant his story almost faded away. His music, shipped back to the US after his death in 1926, remained almost entirely unperformed. Only one piece of Edmund's work has been commercially recorded: Charlestonia which was premiered in 1925 and reconstructed in the 1980's, by the composer Vincent Plush from manuscripts held at the Centre for Black Music Research at Columbia College in Chicago. Now, nearly a hundred years later, the pianist Allyson Devenish travels to Charleston to hear about Edmund's roots and to meet some of the people trying to bring his music the recognition it deserves. She traces his musical life in London and Paris and returns some of Edmund's music to the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied for seven years and performs it with some students and alumni, including the violinist Braimah Kanneh-Mason. Edmund Thornton Jenkins' story is told in a biography by Jeffrey Green and we are grateful for his invaluable help in researching this programme. Contributors include: Kellen Gray Assistant Conductor of the Royal National Scottish Orchestra and Associate Conductor of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra who conducted the premiere of Edmund T Jenkins' piece Rhapsodic Overture, (reconstructed by Tuffus Zimbabwe) for the Spoleto Festival in 2022. John Kennedy, Resident Conductor and Director of Orchestral Activity at the Spoleto Festival. Wojciech Milewski, Music Director of the Charleston Opera Theatre and the Summerville Orchestra who has made the parts and score for Charlestonia publically available. Dr Bernard Powers, historian and Director of the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston. Victoria Smalls, Director of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. Braimah Kanneh-Mason, violinist and Royal Academy of Music alumnus who performs Edmund T Jenkins' Reverie Fantasie with Allyson Devenish. Tamara Tare, a student at the Royal Academy of Music who sings Edmund T Jenkins' That Place Called Italy, accompanied by Allyson Devenish. Jeremy Ng, a student at the Royal Academy of Music who performs Edmund T Jenkins' Prelude Religieux. Emily Woolf, the archivist at Wigmore Hall. Today Alexa is joined by Robert ‘Bob' Marks, a voice teacher, coach, conductor, arranger, author and director. His extensive career has seen him act as a musical director for over 200 productions and his clients have included Ariana Grande, Ricky Lake, Sarah Jessica Parker, Natalie Portman, Britney Spears, and Ashley Tisdale. His writings have appeared in the Journal of Singing and he has recently published the book 88 Keys to Successful Singing Performances with co-author Dr Elizabeth Gerbi. KEY TAKEAWAYS Bob saw his first musical theatre performance on Broadway when he was five years old. It was Jerry Herman's first show called Milk and Honey. Bob was much more enthralled with the conductor and the orchestra players than he was with what was happening on stage. Bob worked with many stars before they became famous. At the time when Natalie Portman saw him, she hadn't won an Oscar. Britney Spears was sent to Bob by her agent because she had an audition for Les Misérables. Ariana Grande was the younger sister of Frankie Grande who was Bob's student and had just landed a role in Mama Mia on Broadway. It's a wonderful thing to be in control of your own audition with self-tapes. You don't have to deal with a stranger at the piano or worry about tempo as you know what you're singing with. Bob's book is a collection of 88 short chapters, hence its title: 88 Keys to Successful Singing Performances. People can just read a chapter or two at a time and get what they need. His book covers vocal health, dealing with voice teachers, finding a voice teacher, finding a coach, and preparing music for the accompanist. BEST MOMENTS‘I learned a lot. I learned from my mistakes. Act One focuses on the true story of Polish poet Krystyna Zywulska surviving the Holocaust – and the psychological trauma she dealt with the rest of her life. It's based on her searing memoir of 1946, “I Survived Auschwitz.” Brandon and Tessa share more about Krystyna's life, about how challenging it is to perform and interpret a story of this magnitude, and how important it is to keep telling these stories.
