State of the Arts Episode 180: The Mother's Day Special now available on Spotify! This week, in an in-person interview in her home on Staten Island, I welcome my classically trained pianist Mom Caroline Osborne to my podcast. As a child and teen she studied classical piano at the British Royal Music Academy in her home city of Hong Kong. My Mom performed several pieces at Belen Manuel's Annual Piano Recital in the Snug Harbor concert hall on Staten Island. At Hometown Restaurant she played keyboard while local saxophonist David Colonello accompanied her for several holiday events. My Dad Edwin Osborne III and I entertained patrons with ballroom dance routines during these performances. Under the leadership of Monsignor Jeffery Conway, my Mom joined the worship team at Our Lady Star of the Sea to play hymns at healing masses. Currently she commutes quite often between her homes in Pennsylvania and New York. So, she keeps a piano in both residences. A very big thank you to my Mom for being my special guest on this Mother's Day episode of State of the Arts. It's a blessing to have her on my show for a lovely interview and a performance of a few pieces of music.

(00:03): The narrator introduces Mercy in Action Day, where parishes in the six counties of the Archdiocese of Detroit mobilize to perform acts of service. (01:13) Listeners are introduced to St. Lucy Parish's particularly robust Christian service ministry. This is due in large part to Donna Belli, the Christian service coordinator at St. Lucy's, who served the parish for 12 years. (02:02) Fr. Jim Commyn, pastor of St. Lucy, explains how Donna was the kind of person who needed to be involved, needed to serve. (03:36) The narrator describes how Donna loved Mercy in Action Day, a celebration and culmination of all the things the parish did in Christian service year-round. (04:30) Christian service members and Fr. Commyn describe the extent of what Donna had planned for Mercy in Action Day. (05:27) A description of the expansive service project Donna Belli had planned for St. Lucy's on Mercy in Action Day -- how Donna had planned for everything, including getting more volunteers, what to do if it started raining, or if the parking lot would have to be used for a funeral. Tragically, the funeral would end up being Donna's own. (07:37) A St. Lucy's Christian service member describes how Donna always went above and beyond, never saying “no.” (09:33) Donna's family asked to have the funeral on Mercy in Action Day, but with everyone in the parish wanting to go to the funeral, Fr. Commyn called out to the community to make sure both could happen on the same day. (10:51) St. Isaac Jogues and Our Lady Star of the Sea parishioners come together to help for Mercy in Action Day at St. Lucy during Donna's funeral. (14:32) Fr. Commyn talks about how “mercy in action” described Donna's approach to life. (15:58) Parishioners talk about what can happen when parishes work together for a common good. (17:12) Fr. Commyn speaks to how the wider community effort is an example of what “Families of Parishes” can offer. (17:59) In a video message from earlier this year, Donna gives a reflection on the week's reading from a March 2021 Mass, reflecting on God has put her on earth to help others.

Mary Ellen McNally is one of Louise’s Cape May “beach friends,” and in this conversation they revisited events from the early days after Archer’s accident. They also explored broader themes of faith, prayer, relational awareness, and how their careers helped them learn more about themselves and how to relate to others.  When Louise collapsed at mass, just a few days after the accident, Mary Ellen was in the right place at the right time to catch her as she fell. And, later, Mary Ellen woke up in the middle of the night feeling compelled to pray for Archer, so she got on her knees and prayed. To hear more about that Sunday mass at Our Lady Star of the Sea, where Louise and Mary Ellen met for the first time after the accident, listen to episode 26, “Little Angel”: https://blinkofaneyepodcast.com/e/episode-26-little-angel/  You can learn more about Louise’s book, Being Relational, at www.beingrelational.com Season 2 of Blink of an Eye will launch on June 23! State of the Arts Episode 22: Mother's Day Special just published! This week an unprecedented, thrilling new episode of State of the Arts. I am joined on my podcast by my mother, Caroline Osborne who is a classically trained pianist, ballroom dance hobbyist, world traveler and classic cinema enthusiast. Born and raised in Hong Kong while it was still a British commonwealth, she grew up speaking both Cantonese and English. She was educated in private Vatican-run schools, always achieving high honors. Discovering a passion for classical piano at twelve years old, she was trained by private instructors hired by my grandparents. She ultimately passed all her exams at the British Academy of Music. She graduated from Saint Francis College with an honors degree in Liberal Arts. A classmate of my mom's just happened to be pen pals with my dad and eventually played matchmaker, introducing the two. They fell in love and were married in New York City. For thirty two years my mom worked in civil service for the New York Office of Management & Budget, Intergovernmental Relations, State Legislation, and the Mayor's Office. Her music accomplishments include playing at Belen Manuel's Annual Snug Harbor Recital, playing hymns at the Our Lady Star of the Sea Healing Service under the leadership of Monsignor Jeffery Conway and jamming on her keyboard at events held by the family dining establishment, Hometown Restaurant. Generous, adventurous, intelligent and tenacious, my mom was and still is an exemplary role model. She helped me become who I am today. Because of her boldness, as a teen I unashamedly let my peers know that I preferred classic jazz over boy bands, three inch pumps over Doc Martins, and the '55 Brooklyn Dodgers over the '98 Yankees. Because of her discipline, I pushed myself hard to stay in honors from junior high school to college where I graduated on the dean's list. Because of her sophistication, my childhood was a culturally rich experience. I am so blessed to have my wonderful, amazing mother on this episode of my podcast. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
