New Zealand music's big night out took place this week. The Aotearoa Music Awards celebrated its 60th year, with our biggest musical stars glitzed and glammed for the red carpet. Taking out two awards this year —Best Solo Artist and the highly coveted Album of the Year— was Fazerdaze, also known as Amelia Murray. It's her first time winning an Aotearoa Music Award, and she told Francesca Rudkin when her name was called, she felt weirdly calm. “It feels kind of like it's been a really long time coming,” Murray says. “I've been nominated quite a few times before and it was kind of, it was nice to finally take home a trophy.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Zealand's Phoebe Rings announce their debut album, Aseurai, today with a pair of new singles “Aseurai” and “Drifting.” On Aseurai, due June 6th on Carpark Records, the quartet, led by NZ jazz-school-trained pianist and songwriter Crystal Choi, adds disco and city-pop influences while staying true to the dream-pop sound of their self-titled EP. “Aseurai means around you in the atmosphere, hard to reach, fading away,” Choi says. “It's a poetic expression. You wouldn't say it in normal conversation, but I like that.” While Phoebe Rings was originally a solo project of Choi's, Aseurai marks a shift with contributing songwriting credits from the whole band, which includes Guitar/synthesist Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent, bassist Benjamin Locke and drummer/producer Alex Freer. The four musicians cut their teeth working on other notable NZ projects such as Princess Chelsea, Fazerdaze, Tiny Ruins, AC Freazy, Sea Views and Lucky Boy^. With a more ambitious collection of instruments, Choi says this album heralds the start of true collaboration: “I feel more precious about this LP because it includes everyone's gems.” The broth is richer with more cooks in the kitchen, and the brewing of textures creates a distinct ‘Phoebe Rings' sound.

After receiving glowing reviews for her earlier releases including her debut album Morningside, Fazerdaze spent years touring throughout the world, resulting in burnout. After taking some time out, she has returned with a new album that represents coming out of the darkness, with a sound that is bigger, but still holds true to her distinctive dreamy guitar pop.
Before they take to the stage at this year's The Other's Way festival in Auckland, local band Voom called in to have a chat about writing a song for the All Blacks back in the day and working with Fazerdaze on their new album. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As broadcast October 18, 2022 with Al Green driving the ladies mad once again! Tonight we start with the so-called "Grits Incident," when a woman dangerously obsessed with soul singer Al Green poured boiling grits over his head and then committed suicide in the next room with The Reverend's own gun. As broadcast July 26, 2022 with plenty for you to chill, study, and relax to. This evening we open with a favorite from Mark Farina's acclaimed and highly influential Mushroom Jazz series, which starting in 1996 really brought what's now called lo-fi to the forefront of underground music. We continued in that vein for the first block with Ted Feighan aka Monster Rally out with Botanica Dream on Friday, and we also had an interesting new LP from the UK's letherette to bump a bit as well with Kat Bass. New tunes out this week are pretty incredible, with Japanese Breakfast and SE SO NEON's So!Yoon! teaming up for a Korean version of "Be Sweet" right before Michelle Zauner herself joins us in Korea live for the Pentaport Music Festival on August 6!#feelthegravityTracks:Part I (00:00)The Hue feat Kissey Asplund – Stressin'Monster Rally – Moon FlowerLetherette – AlonePolo & Pan – From a World to AnotherStevie Zita – GhostbusterDivino Niño – Nos Soltanos Part II (30:03)Japanese Breakfast ft. We had the pleasure of interviewing Merk over Zoom video! Merk is the musical moniker of Auckland, New Zealand artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Mark Perkins who began his career as a touring member of Tom Lark and Fazerdaze. Merk’s recent singles “H.N.Y.B” and “GOD” have already earned critical acclaim spanning SPIN Magazine and BBC Radio 6. Today, he reveals new single/video “Laps Around The Sun'' alongside the announcement of his debut globally released album Infinite Youth due out April 9 on Humblebrag Records. This is a record that thrives on a certain simplicity of rhythm, melody, and lyric, and is compelled by contrast: pop songs influenced by art music, an album about adulthood that reflects heavily on what it is to be young, and a sonic world that is both expansive and deeply intimate. Pop songs that transcend the basic, disregard the complex, and zero in on the simple: Merk seeks to find where ABBA, The Beach Boys, The Carpenters, the Japanese City Pop of the late 70s and 80s meet. An album that will capture you on first listen and then reward your every repetition, Infinite Youth reintroduces Merk and invites you, warmly, into his orbit. Perkins learned the craft of recording and producing under the stewardship of Crowded House’s (and now Fleetwood Mac’s!) Neil Finn while working at Roundhead Studios. His debut album Swordfish went on to win Best Debut Album at the Taite Music Prize (New Zealand’s equivalent of the Mercury or Polaris Prize), and led to tours with Cub Sport, Marlon Williams and Julia Jacklin in Australia and New Zealand. Jon actually left his house and saw a movie: Director Jordan Peele’s second film, Us. In the Music 101 Pocket Edition this week, Yadana Saw talks to Aldous Harding backatage in Atlanta, Melody Thomas talks to Amelia Murray from Fazerdaze about being a woman who plays guitar, and a budding young radio producer has a crack at being a busker.
Amelia Murray started her first five-piece, all-girl band at 16 - learning the ropes of live performance, guitar and songwriting that would later serve her so well in solo project Fazerdaze.
Will and Nicholas discuss new music by Thurston Moore and Fazerdaze, plus a Kiss convention and a live report.
Tash was back in the studio this week with a heavy helping of new music to help you through your post-Brexit sorrow. Top tracks came from WOLF KASH, ORI, DiDi, Fazerdaze and Desperate Journalist. Then she was joined by Tash Cutts from This Must Be For You who talked about art, alturism and picked some of her favourite tracks of the moment from Horsey, Dama Scout and Venture Lows - an absolute delight!
hanks to the force of nature that is Doris, Tash was the only one to make it to the studio this week. She played her favourite new music with an unintentional Nordic theme from the likes of ARY, Claire Jensen and Asgeir. Other top tracks came from Gurr, Fazerdaze, Anna Pancaldi and future guests of the show The Tuts. This week's live session came from The 286 who played three absolute delights! @getinherears @maudeandtrevor
