Can a state require every public school classroom to display the Ten Commandments?Federal courts are currently answering that question in different ways, and the disagreement could eventually reach the U.S. Supreme Court. In this episode of Legal Ledger Sidebar, OSBA attorneys Sara Clark and Jennie Hardin break down recent court decisions from Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas involving laws requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms. They explain how the Supreme Court's decision in Kennedy v. Bremerton changed the legal framework for church-state cases, why courts are now focused on "history and tradition," and how two courts reviewing nearly identical issues reached opposite conclusions. The discussion also explores:• The end of the Lemon test.• The role of Stone v. Graham in modern court decisions.• What lawyers mean by a "circuit split."• Whether the U.S. Supreme Court could eventually weigh in.• Why Ohio school leaders should pay attention, even though Ohio does not currently have a similar law.Legal Ledger Sidebar is a podcast from the Ohio School Boards Association that examines legal developments affecting public education and school governance. For more resources, training and advocacy updates from the Ohio School Boards Association, visit ohioschoolboards.org.
No Doubt's been doing their Sphere residency out in Vegas, and man, it gives me FOMO! Telling the whole story of when MxPx opened for them way back in 1997, our first bus tour ever. The band themselves (always 100% awesome). Plus voicemails: Jason wants to know if Tony Kanal ripped off my look, a longtime fan calls in with a really thoughtful take on the Michael drama and a Wilco rec that gets me going about A.M. and Summerteeth, and a Star Wars debate that Robbie Aaron from Oceans Away calls in to agree on. This week I'm flying solo on the pod with show announcements and a round of your voicemails. Free Subscriber Sticker Link: https://forms.gle/kwYDM93UvCGgCdhp9 (While Supplies Last) Tour news includes a solo acoustic set at the World Cup fan zone in downtown Bremerton on Friday, June 12 (free as far as I know), all the MxPx Warped Tour dates, and a show coming up at Punkadeka Festival in Milan on September 5. I also talk about the Goldfinger drum heads in Seattle that everyone signed except me and why I had to clear that up. Your voicemails cover a few things: new songs on Warped Tour, waiting on a signature bass, why we still do free post-show meet and greets, and why so many stand-up comedians are MxPx fans. I shout out a few comedians I'm into, including Lee Hardin, Ian Fidance, Anthony Jeselnik, Adam Ray, and Scott Losse, and we close on the question that gives the episode its title: how do you think funny? In the account of Philip, we encounter an unusual moment: people are baptized as disciples of Jesus, yet they do not receive the Spirit right away. Luke presents this as an exception—which implies the norm is that the Spirit accompanies Christian baptism. That raises an important question: what is baptism's role in the life of a Christian? Does it save? Or is it the means by which we receive the Spirit—as if the Spirit could be compelled by the act itself? Our faith can feel fragile, like the right gust of doubt could send it crashing down. But how do we strengthen our faith? C. Michael Patton's book, “Increase My Faith”, offers a helpful breakdown of the essence of faith. This book helps you diagnose the source of fragility so that you can “work out” your faith and grow your confidence in the truth. In this episode, we reframe technology and media as morally neutral tools that become morally significant in use, and we explore a distinctly Christian approach that seeks redemption through repentance and faith in Christ, lived out through the ordinary, “low-tech” means of worship. A 2022 decision from the Supreme Court continues to sow confusion and misguided claims four years later. Today, we're revisiting our conversation on the Kennedy v. Bremerton decision, where the Court ruled for a public school official and abandoned long-standing Establishment Clause protections in ways that harm the religious freedom rights of students. Hear Amanda and Holly react right after this decision and ponder just what, exactly, would actually constitute "coercion" for this Court. The Supreme Court did not overrule the previous school prayer cases with the decision, but it did gut some of the consensus that protects the religious liberty rights of everyone at public schools. This conversation was recorded in front of a live audience on June 29, 2022, and was first released July 7, 2022. SHOW NOTES Segment 1 (starting at 02:57): Not solving a problem, but creating one: Kennedy v. Bremerton decision You can read the Bremerton opinion here, written by Justice Neil Gorsuch. Justice Sonia Sotomayor's dissenting opinion includes photos of the prayer practice at issue (see pages 9 and 10 of the dissent, which are on pages 49 and 50 of the opinion PDF document). We released three podcasts on this case: We previewed the case in April 2022 in Episode 14 of Season 3 in an episode titled "#NoPrayToPlay." We recapped the oral arguments in Episode 15 of that same season: "The coach is the loudspeaker and the field is his classroom: Recapping the arguments in Kennedy v. Bremerton" We released this episode as our season 3 finale. The full episode is titled "Not solving a problem, but creating one: Dissecting the Kennedy v. Bremerton decision" Segment 2 (starting at 26:51): Concluding thoughts For all of BJC's resources on this case, visit BJConline.org/Bremerton. How should Christians think about raising their children? In a culture that says kids should choose their own beliefs when they grow up, the Bible presents a very different vision. In this episode, we consider the calling God has given parents and the church to shape the faith of the next generation—and why the way we think about discipleship will shape the way we raise our children. Can employers force Americans to choose between their job and their faith? In this hard-hitting episode, attorney Larry Dershem sits down with Cliff Martin, Senior Legal Counsel at First Liberty Institute, to discuss the growing legal battles over religious freedom in America. As the largest legal organization in the nation dedicated exclusively to defending religious liberty for all Americans, First Liberty Institute has built an extraordinary record—winning over 90% of its cases, including 10 victories at the U.S. Supreme Court. Martin shares powerful stories from the front lines of these cases, including: A Nashville school teacher forced to read classroom material that violated his deeply held religious beliefs A high school football coach in Bremerton, Washington, removed from his position for praying on the field after games A pastor hit with nearly two dozen criminal charges for feeding and caring for the homeless during freezing winter weather In each case, First Liberty’s attorneys stepped in to defend the constitutional rights of individuals who believed their faith should not cost them their livelihood—or their freedom. Has Jesus lived up to your expectations? Probably not, if you're honest. And you're in good company. John the Baptist faced that same situation as he sat in a Roman prison. As you follow Jesus, living in obedience to His Word, your expectations will often be shattered by reality. And you will be faced with the dilemma: Will you be offended by Jesus or will you follow Him? Westside Unscripted is the pastor's podcast of Westside Baptist Church in Bremerton, WA. Today: We are back from the holiday weekend, thank you for your patience!! Today we talked about gambling rings above a bowling alley in Bremerton, haunted roads and fake nails, drinking vinegar and tiny horses, human washing machines, and more - have a great night friends!!
RUNDOWN Time for a post-Thanksgiving catch-up — from Hotshot's massive Bonnie Lake feast (and industrial-sized leftovers) to Mitch explaining why he avoids other people's stuffing, small talk, and social gatherings altogether. The guys 'roll' into a playful celebration of area code 360, spotlighting surprising celebrity ties: Sam Elliott's Clark College days, Hilary Swank's Bellingham childhood, The Rock's Vancouver roots, and of course Kurt Cobain — whose Aberdeen home, schools, and legacy still anchor the region. Mitch and Hotshot mourn Washington's deflating rivalry loss to Oregon, wondering what's happened to Damon Williams over the last few weeks and whether Jed Fisch's 8–4 season is real progress or just a tiny baby step. They pivot to the Seahawks' 26–0 shutout of a completely overmatched Vikings team led by one-and-done starter Max Broer, raising fresh concerns about Sam Darnold, a sputtering passing game, and what—if anything—you can actually learn from a win like that. Mitch then slips into full "Mr. Playoffs" mode, mapping out the Rams–Seahawks tiebreaker hell. Brady and Jacson join Mitch to break down Seattle's emphatic 26–0 shutout of Minnesota — the team's first since 2015 — powered by five takeaways, four sacks, and total defensive domination of an undrafted rookie QB. While the win keeps Seattle tied atop the NFC West, all three acknowledge the troubling offensive trend. The crew debates whether this defense — with Ernest Jones ascending, DeMarcus Lawrence wrecking pockets, Reek Woolen surging, and reinforcements like Julian Love near return — is good enough to carry a sputtering offense deep into January. Rick joins Mitch to dissect Washington's season-ending loss to Oregon — highlighting Damon Williams' late-year regression, disorganized reads, and off-timed footwork, while crediting Dante Moore for outplaying him in a game UW needed. They walk through the wild coaching carousel (Lane Kiffin to LSU? Will Ole Miss even let him coach the playoff?) and unravel the tangled playoff math: whether the Ohio State–Indiana loser still deserves a bye, how an Alabama loss would knock them out, and why Texas Tech's "purchased darlings" have a real shot to win it all.
