Y'all made this happen...Ignore us conflating secular and non-secular! We're talking about religion in witchcraftWhat started as a running joke about toenails unfortunately, hid a horrifying truth: Nail clippings, and other“taglocks,” actually do have a long history in witchcraft. So .... we had to talk about it... Thanks...Then we have a surprisingly thoughtful conversation about secular vs religious witchcraft, egregores, animism, gods, skepticism, ritual, and whether belief itself can create meaning, power, or even divinity.Irish Pagan School, Lora O'Brienloraobrien.ieGet Yer Anahata's Ticketsanahataspurpose.comDelegating upwardwitchhut.questTrailer for Blood in the Snow by TheKetchupPantherhttps://youtu.be/KiqRltWhoXs?si=dOJ0xh4NFFbQlfiowitchbitchamateurhour.comPlay Skyrim With Charlyetwitch.tv/charlye_withawhyWant to help support the Podcast? What lies hidden in the forgotten backroads and isolated hollows of Southern Ohio? Far from the panic of New England, the Midwest developed its own distinct, enduring tapestry of magic—one born of necessity, deeply connected to the land, and carried through generations by powerful women, healers, and respected cunning folk. In this episode of The Twilight Tonic, hostess DeeDee Moonflyer sits down with storyteller and author Mark H. Roe to explore his fascinating book, Witches of Southern Ohio: A Field Guide to Folk Magic, Legends, and Local Lore. Together, they step into a world where Native American traditions, early settler beliefs, and Appalachian folk magic intertwine.
Step into the woods… actually, don't.In this episode of Dark Academy, we gather in the Midnight Library to explore The Village, a film where fear isn't just a feeling… it's a system. A system designed to protect. To control. To keep people safe…From “Those We Do Not Speak Of” to the quiet authority of those who claim to know what's best, The Village forces us to ask a chilling question:Can we trust the people who decide what we're allowed to know?We start with the film itself—its tension, its love story, its carefully constructed fear, and unravel the deeper horror beneath it: not monsters in the woods, but the stories we're told to keep us in line. Then we step beyond the screen.Into the lies we tell children to keep them safe.Into folklore and superstition designed to control behavior.Into real-world beliefs that blurred the line between protection… and harm. From childhood warnings to cultural traditions, and even true crime rooted in fear and belief, this episode explores how easily we accept what we're told, especially when it feels like it's for our own good.Because sometimes the scariest thing isn't the unknown……it's trusting the wrong voice in the dark.So the question is:Would you rather know the truth…or feel safe believing the lie?Welcome back to Dark Academy.Grab your candle.

She explains how this tradition—often misunderstood—centers on empowerment, connection, and working in harmony with spiritual forces to bring about positive change, protection, and clarity. This episode invites listeners to explore the significance of honoring tradition while integrating spiritual awareness into modern living. What role do intention, ritual, and ancestral connection play in shaping our lives? And how can daily practices create a deeper sense of purpose, balance, and alignment? Join us for a fascinating conversation that bridges past and present—where spirituality becomes a daily journey, and where ancient practices continue to guide those seeking meaning, strength, and connection in today's world.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. When it comes to the walnut tree, we're probably more familiar with their produce than the actual tree. Walnuts are easily recognisable, and present in everything from nut selections to coffee cake. We might even know that classic Jaguar cars often feature walnut veneers on their dashboards. Many guitars also feature walnut in their construction. Yet we're probably less familiar with their superstitions, legends, and even remedies. The fact that they appear in folklore shows they were important to our forebears, even if we've forgotten their uses now. Let's put that right and get to know the walnut tree in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! Guest: Icy Sedgwick — folklorist, author, and host of The Fabulous Folklore Podcast Topic: Love magic, divination, and the rituals people used to find (or keep) love.Book: Bring Me Love: Finding and Keeping Love Using Divination and Folk Magic by Icy SedgwickIn this episode, we welcome back folklorist, author, and host of The Fabulous Folklore Podcast, Icy Sedgwick, to talk about her newest book: Bring Me Love: Finding and Keeping Love Using Folk Magic. If you've listened before, you'll know Icy's brilliant blend of deep research, humour, and a lifelong fascination with the supernatural. If you're new — you're in for a treat. We dive into the wonderfully strange, practical, and often charming world of love magic and divination. * The historical roots of love magic and why it mattered so deeply, especially for women with limited choices.* How everyday objects — herbs, cakes, pins, candles — became tools for predicting or attracting love.* Why many rituals focused on discovering a future spouse's occupation rather than their personality.* The difference between folk magic, cunning folk, and more ceremonial occult traditions.* How love divination travelled and transformed across regions, especially from Europe to North America.* The ethical and practical challenges of deciding what to include in a book on love magic. We also explore the delightfully odd rituals people genuinely tried — from walking upstairs backwards in silence to baking “silent cakes,” and even interpreting the shapes of egg whites floating in warm water. You can find more about me and Folklore, Food and Fairytales via my LinktreeYou can find the interviews in my newest interview series here: How Food Frames Stories. On today's episode I am joined by Brianna — known online as The Grey Witch — a Romany witch whose craft is rooted deeply in old-world folk magic, land-based practice, and ancestral tradition. Brianna is one of the most authentic witches I have ever had the honour of speaking with. Her connection to the land is fierce and lifelong, and she approaches every aspect of her craft with honesty, integrity and devotion. She does not shy away from difficult conversations, and her willingness to share even a glimpse into her lineage feels incredibly sacred. We begin by exploring how Brianna was taught witchcraft through her family line, including traditional fortune-telling methods passed down through generations. She speaks about crystal ball reading, divination with playing cards, and the ways her ancestors taught her to see, sense and interpret signs. Brianna also shares stories of how she has supported her community — helping farmers with their crops, performing spellwork for those seeking guidance, and calling upon her spiritual court, including a powerful spirit known as The Rider, who she describes in depth. One of my favourite parts of this conversation was hearing how she works with the sickle as a magical tool, both symbolically and practically. We also explore Brianna's use of animal remains within her craft — a topic she approaches with complete reverence. She works only with animals already sacrificed for food, honouring every part of their body in accordance with ancestral custom. Nothing is taken lightly. Nothing is wasted. Her approach reflects a form of witchcraft that is deeply rooted in reciprocity and respect, far removed from modern farming systems and very aligned with how our ancestors lived in relationship with the land. Another fascinating thread in this episode is how Brianna weaves her Catholic faith through her folk magic. She speaks about saints, spirits and symbols with the same natural ease that many witches speak about herbs or lunar phases. Her practice mirrors the syncretic paths of many folk practitioners throughout history — blending spiritual frameworks with land magic, lineage and personal devotion. Romany witchcraft is a deeply closed and protected practice, and I am profoundly grateful that Brianna chose to share what she could with us. Her openness, wisdom and trust make this a rare and incredibly special conversation. If you would like to explore her work further, please do check out her website and social platforms. She also has a folk magic course coming in 2026 for those who feel called to learn from her. It's time for episode three of the dragons' spooky season extravaganza and don't be deceived by the title. Folk Magic can go to some pretty dark places... This week, Jules and Madeleine take a look at a magic system that relies on mundane objects and folk knowledge. In fact this type of magic is, on the surface, so mundane that many people would argue that it's more superstition than a magic system. It forms a backbone in many folk horror and dark fantasy stories and even creeps into sci-fi and urban fantasy. So where does the magic of the mundane originate from? What is its logic? And how do you incorporate it in your own world building? On the slab this week - October Daye - Seanan McGuire, Terry Pratchett's Discworld, Practical Magic and many more. Title music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic

On this week's episode of the *222 Paranormal Podcast*, we welcome a very special guest: **Pat O'Keefe**, storyteller, folklorist, and documentarian of the strange, magical, and mysterious world of the Appalachian region. Known for her deep research and personal experiences, Pat shines a light on a culture rich with history, tradition, and supernatural lore that has been passed down for generations. The Appalachian Mountains are more than just rolling hills and winding roads—they are alive with stories. Pat O'Keefe has spent years preserving these tales, especially those of the **granny witches**—wise women of the mountains who carried with them a blend of herbal knowledge, folk magic, and spiritual practices that bridged the gap between the physical and unseen worlds. In this episode, she shares her passion for uncovering these stories and explains why the traditions of Appalachian magic are so important to preserve in our fast-moving modern world. We dive into the heart of Pat's work and talk about: * **The legacy of Appalachian granny witches** – who they were, what they believed, and how they healed both body and soul. * **The intersection of folklore and the paranormal** – from ghostly apparitions in mountain hollers to unexplained lights in the woods. * **Pat's documentary work** – capturing the voices of locals who grew up hearing stories of spells, cures, omens, and encounters that defy logic. * **The role of faith, superstition, and nature** in shaping Appalachian spiritual practices. * How these traditions influence paranormal investigators and researchers today. What makes Pat's storytelling so powerful is her connection to the land and the people. She doesn't just collect stories—she honors them. With warmth and authenticity, she explains how folklore has always been a way for Appalachian families to pass down wisdom, cope with hardship, and stay connected to the mysteries of life and death. For our listeners who love ghost stories, Pat also shares chilling accounts of haunted cabins, spectral figures along mountain paths, and eerie experiences that leave even seasoned investigators at a loss for explanation. But beyond the chills, this episode opens up a deeper conversation about belief, tradition, and the ways humans make sense of the unknown. If you've ever been fascinated by folk magic, mountain mysteries, or the idea that the veil between worlds is just a little thinner in certain places, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Pat O'Keefe reminds us that the paranormal isn't always about high-tech equipment or big investigations—it's about listening to the voices of those who came before us, and understanding how they saw the world. In doing so, we keep those stories alive and maybe even open ourselves to new experiences with the unexplained. So grab your headphones, settle in, and join us as we journey into the Appalachian hills with Pat O'Keefe on this week's *222 Paranormal Podcast*.

Sfinga and Key explore a sample of folk magical traditions involving that ever-faithful ally: bread. In addition to revisiting old debates over the leavened or unleavened Eucharist, they go over different techniques of capturing timing, forces of nature, and even stars in bread, finding thieves and cleansing ills, and helping the dead pass on into the afterlife with just water, salt, yeast, and flour. Did you know that roughly a million people in Russia today make their living as some kind of wizard, witch, or folk healer? And that some of the most popular TV programs in Russia in the '90s were presentations of psychic healers and self-proclaimed sorcerers? Russians have a long history of believing in magic, with old Slavic spiritual beliefs surviving Russia's past Christian takeover thanks to Russia's system of dual beliefs. American folk magic is a broad term for a variety of traditional spiritual practices that have developed in the United States. It's often called "low magic" because it was passed down through families and communities, not learned in formal schools or from books. This kind of magic is very practical and focused on everyday problems, like healing the sick, finding lost things, bringing good luck, or protecting a home from harm. These traditions are a blend of different cultures, mainly from European, African, and Native American sources. As people from these different backgrounds lived together, they shared and combined their spiritual beliefs and practices. This led to different types of American folk magic developing in various regions. For example, some well-known traditions include Hoodoo (which comes from African American communities in the South), Powwow or Hex-Work (found among the Pennsylvania Dutch), and Appalachian folk magic. Even some common superstitions today, like carrying a rabbit's foot for luck or hanging a horseshoe over a door, are a part of this history.
In today's episode I talk about the reality of how fresh starts, and endings, present in our lives (it's never neat and tidy like in a book or movie!) and how to nurture ourselves through these changes. I offer a "phase in - phase out" ritual to help us cleanse our life of what we no longer want - and bring in the new beginning we are craving. I also go off on a little tangent (again) about how we need to stop doing the toxic bypassing thing about the Death card and allow ourselves to acknowledge endings. In this episode of Fabulous Folklore Presents, I chat to Scott Richardson-Read of Cailleach's Herbarium about Scottish cosmology, discuss the differences between Scottish folk magic and folk magic practices elsewhere in the British Isles, and talk about the value of ancestor work in Scottish folk magic. Scott is an independent researcher, published author, and activist with several master's degrees in research, social sciences, and psychology. His academic background helps him explore Scottish folklore, customs, and traditions, uncovering their relevance today while grounding them in a rich historical and social context. His next book is launching in Spring 2025 “Mill Dust and Dreaming Bread” exploring these topics in a new way. Combining academic research, archival work, and hands-on experience, Scott explores the historical roots of Scottish folk practices. With his "in the world, off the page" approach, he encourages people to take an active role in preserving Scotland's cultural and intangible heritage. Through his work with the Woven Land Network, Scott curates events that bring together experts in Scottish folk magic, music, storytelling, and traditional practices, making these traditions meaningful and accessible today. Scott's passion for activism is shaped by a lifelong commitment to social justice.
