Our discussion explores the intersection of psychedelics, artificial intelligence, and filmmaking. We discuss into how Lando used AI and other emerging technologies to create the visual effects for his film, producing some of the best LSD-like psychedelic visuals and audio that I have personally seen in a movie. We also discuss the potential impacts of AI on the film industry and creative processes more broadly. We explore ideas around personal growth, societal change, and envisioning post-scarcity futures as Lando shares his perspectives on the transformative potential of psychedelics, drawing from his own experiences and how they influenced the themes in his movie. Additionally, the conversation touches on some, let's say, provocative topics related to economics, labour, and visions for reorganizing society. And, although I can't endorse any particular views, I believe you'll find it to be a thought-provoking dialogue about technology, consciousness, and human potential. Enjoy! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Fluent dreaming for language models (AI interpretability method), published by tbenthompson on February 6, 2024 on LessWrong. This is a cross-post for our paper on fluent dreaming for language models. (arXiv link.) Dreaming, aka "feature visualization," is a interpretability approach popularized by DeepDream that involves optimizing the input of a neural network to maximize an internal feature like a neuron's activation. We adapt dreaming to language models. Past dreaming work almost exclusively works with vision models because the inputs are continuous and easily optimized. Language model inputs are discrete and hard to optimize. To solve this issue, we adapted techniques from the adversarial attacks literature (GCG, Zou et al 2023). Our algorithm, Evolutionary Prompt Optimization (EPO), optimizes over a Pareto frontier of activation and fluency: In the paper, we compare dreaming with max-activating dataset examples, demonstrating that dreaming achieves higher activations and similar perplexities to the training set. Dreaming is especially exciting because some mildly out-of-distribution prompts can reveal details of a circuit. For example, Pythia-12B layer 10, neuron 5 responds very strongly to "f. example", "f.ex." and "i.e" but responds even more strongly to "example f.ie.", a phrase the model has probably never seen in training. Figure: Comparing activation and cross-entropy between dreaming outputs and the top 64 max-activating dataset examples from 500 million tokens of the Pile. Lower cross-entropy prompts are more fluent. The black line is schematically separating regions of the plot that are empirically inside and outside the training distribution. Like max-activating dataset examples, language model dreams will be hard to interpret in the face of polysemanticity. We would be excited about applying dreaming to more monosemantic feature sets resulting from dictionary learning/sparse autoencoders. We think algorithms like EPO will also be useful for fluent algorithmic redteaming. We are working on that now! We have a companion page here demonstrating the code. We also have a demo Colab notebook here. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org

In this enlightening episode, we explore the concepts that make sleep vital to our well-being. We delve into how sleep allows our bodies to heal, our minds to grapple with problems and aids us in shaping our future. Drawing a link between the calming effects of sleep, hypnotherapy, and meditation, we uncover the key to activating our creative brains to aid in manifesting our deepest desires. The episode takes you on a mental journey, guiding your imagination through a visual of a tranquil beach setting. We explore the sensations of the sand under your feet, the sound of the ocean waves, the warm sun on your skin, and the salty breeze in the air. As you walk along the beach, you're also guided through a powerful exercise involving writing your name in the sand and watching as the sea waves gradually erase it. This visualization encourages you to let go of past restraints and welcome a new, relaxed future. We also delve into the power of controlling overpowering and intrusive thoughts that are often responsible for our sleepless nights. Using stern repetition of commands like "Enough. Stop.", we train the mind to quieten unhelpful thoughts, helping you to regain control over your peace. We also encourage the nurturing of relaxing thoughts, equating them to peaceful dreams. As we conclude, you are reminded that enjoying a good night's sleep is your inherent right and that those you love are undoubtedly happier when you are well-rested. This affirming episode, meticulously designed with calming music breaks, is aimed at equipping you with practical meditation techniques for a deep, rejuvenating sleep.

Dr. Fabian Offert ist Assistant Professor in History and Theory of Digital Humanities an der University of California, Santa Barbara. Over the years, he has added many other instruments to his collection, including exotic flutes from around the world, conch shell, charango, 12-string guitar, Tibetan bowls, feathers, harmonica, gong, drums, and rattles. Bodhi's been working with sound meditation, sound healing, and sacred sound journeys for over 40 years. He's studied with Tito La Rosa, Paul Horn, Allaudin Mathieu, and many other artists. Around the globe, his music is used in yoga studios, health spas, and health practitioners' offices. His music has had millions of plays on Pandora, Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming sites. Bodhi's deep love for the natural world led him to work many years as a wilderness and river guide. Playing his flute in the forest, inspired by the sounds of nature, he developed his own unique style of improvisation within the healing music modalities. He's been a featured artist at many festivals and conferences around the world, including the International Conference on Shamanism. He has 18 original albums in his portfolio and is the founder of the touring and recording ensembles Sonic Transfusion, Crystal Wind, and Rhythm Matrix. He's had two no. 1 flute albums on the Zone Music Reporter International New Age Music Chart, Trans Ukraine in 2006 and Deep Dream in 2020. In 2021 he created the Soundscape Oasis, a sound healing temple sanctuary near the town of Mt. Shasta in California. Enter this heavenly Universe and unlock your best sleep with this Deep Lucid Dream 432 HZ sleep Frequency music + Water Flowing Relaxing + Birds sounds. It releases all negative thoughts, and blockages, and cleanses the mind! 432Hz: In the western world, we typically hear music tuned to 440Hz. This is because most radio stations and concerts use that as their tuning frequency. The upside is that it's a little easier to hear the high notes, but many people argue that the 432Hz frequency produces a more authentic sounding instrument. A recent study found that listening to music at 432Hz during dental procedures can reduce anxiety, heart rate, and blood pressure as well as make patients feel less pain. 432 Hz is popular among people who are looking to get more relaxed or improve their mental state because of a scientific factor called the Schumann Resonance. German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann first documented the Schumann Resonance, which is the frequency of magnetic waves constantly resonating between Earth's surface and the ionosphere. This frequency is about 8Hz and is sometimes called the heartbeat of the Earth because of its constant vibration. 8Hz is connected to 432Hz because the two frequencies resonate with each other. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Chris Olah's views on AGI safety, published by evhub on the LessWrong. Crossposted from the AI Alignment Forum. May contain more technical jargon than usual. Note: I am not Chris Olah. This post was the result of lots of back-and-forth with Chris, but everything here is my interpretation of what Chris believes, not necessarily what he actually believes. Chris also wanted me to emphasize that his thinking is informed by all of his colleagues on the OpenAI Clarity team and at other organizations. In thinking about AGI safety—and really any complex topic on which many smart people disagree—I've often found it very useful to build a collection of different viewpoints from people that I respect that I feel like I understand well enough to be able to think from their perspective. For example, I will often try to compare what an idea feels like when I put on my Paul Christiano hat to what it feels like when I put on my Scott Garrabrant hat. Recently, I feel like I've gained a new hat that I've found extremely valuable that I also don't think many other people in this community have, which is my Chris Olah hat. The goal of this post is to try to give that hat to more people. If you're not familiar with him, Chris Olah leads the Clarity team at OpenAI and formerly used to work at Google Brain. Chris has been a part of many of the most exciting ML interpretability results in the last five years, including Activation Atlases, Building Blocks of Interpretability, Feature Visualization, and DeepDream. Chris was also a coauthor of “Concrete Problems in AI Safety.” He also thinks a lot about technical AGI safety and has a lot of thoughts on how ML interpretability work can play into that—thoughts which, unfortunately, haven't really been recorded previously. So: here's my take on Chris's AGI safety worldview. The benefits of transparency and interpretability Since Chris primarily works on ML transparency and interpretability, the obvious first question to ask is how he imagines that sort of research aiding with AGI safety. When I was talking with him, Chris listed four distinct ways in which he thought transparency and interpretability could help, which I'll go over in his order of importance. Catching problems with auditing First, Chris says, interpretability gives you a mulligan. Before you deploy your AI, you can throw all of your interpretability tools at it to check and see what it actually learned and make sure it learned the right thing. If it didn't—if you find that it's learned some sort of potentially dangerous proxy, for example—then you can throw your AI out and try again. As long as you're in a domain where your AI isn't actively trying to deceive your interpretability tools (via deceptive alignment, perhaps), this sort of a mulligan could help quite a lot in resolving more standard robustness problems (proxy alignment, for example). That being said, that doesn't necessarily mean waiting until you're on the verge of deployment to look for flaws. Ideally you'd be able to discover problems early on via an ongoing auditing process as you build more and more capable systems. One of the OpenAI Clarity team's major research thrusts right now is developing the ability to more rigorously and systematically audit neural networks. The idea is that interpretability techniques shouldn't have to “get lucky” to stumble across a problem, but should instead reliably catch any problematic behavior. In particular, one way in which they've been evaluating progress on this is the “auditing game.” In the auditing game, one researcher takes a neural network and makes some modification to it—maybe images containing both dogs and cats are now classified as rifles, for example—and another researcher, given only the modified network, has to diagnose the problem and figure out exactly what modif...

Big machine learning models can identify plant species better than any human, write passable essays, beat you at a game of Starcraft 2, figure out how a photo of Tobey Maguire and the word 'spider' are related, solve the 60-year-old 'protein folding problem', diagnose some diseases, play romantic matchmaker, write solid computer code, and offer questionable legal advice. Humanity made these amazing and ever-improving tools. So how do our creations work? In short: we don't know. Today's guest, Chris Olah, finds this both absurd and unacceptable. Over the last ten years he has been a leader in the effort to unravel what's really going on inside these black boxes. As part of that effort he helped create the famous DeepDream visualisations at Google Brain, reverse engineered the CLIP image classifier at OpenAI, and is now continuing his work at Anthropic, a new $100 million research company that tries to "co-develop the latest safety techniques alongside scaling of large ML models". Links to learn more, summary and full transcript. Despite having a huge fan base thanks to his explanations of ML and tweets, today's episode is the first long interview Chris has ever given. It features his personal take on what we've learned so far about what ML algorithms are doing, and what's next for this research agenda at Anthropic. His decade of work has borne substantial fruit, producing an approach for looking inside the mess of connections in a neural network and back out what functional role each piece is serving. Among other things, Chris and team found that every visual classifier seems to converge on a number of simple common elements in their early layers - elements so fundamental they may exist in our own visual cortex in some form. They also found networks developing 'multimodal neurons' that would trigger in response to the presence of high-level concepts like 'romance', across both images and text, mimicking the famous 'Halle Berry neuron' from human neuroscience. While reverse engineering how a mind works would make any top-ten list of the most valuable knowledge to pursue for its own sake, Chris's work is also of urgent practical importance. Machine learning models are already being deployed in medicine, business, the military, and the justice system, in ever more powerful roles. The competitive pressure to put them into action as soon as they can turn a profit is great, and only getting greater. But if we don't know what these machines are doing, we can't be confident they'll continue to work the way we want as circumstances change. Before we hand an algorithm the proverbial nuclear codes, we should demand more assurance than "well, it's always worked fine so far". But by peering inside neural networks and figuring out how to 'read their minds' we can potentially foresee future failures and prevent them before they happen. Artificial neural networks may even be a better way to study how our own minds work, given that, unlike a human brain, we can see everything that's happening inside them - and having been posed similar challenges, there's every reason to think evolution and 'gradient descent' often converge on similar solutions. Among other things, Rob and Chris cover: * Why Chris thinks it's necessary to work with the largest models * What fundamental lessons we've learned about how neural networks (and perhaps humans) think * How interpretability research might help make AI safer to deploy, and Chris? response to skeptics * Why there's such a fuss about 'scaling laws' and what they say about future AI progress Get this episode by subscribing to our podcast on the world?s most pressing problems and how to solve them: type 80,000 Hours into your podcasting app. Producer: Keiran Harris Audio mastering: Ben Cordell Transcriptions: Sofia Davis-Fogel

We kick off Season 2 of Into the Impossible by diving into the world of artificial imagination. As the artificial intelligence dream comes closer to AI reality, are the doomsday stories about AI correct—or will AI augment human imagination in unexpected and powerful ways? We speak with Kenric McDowell, the Director of Google's Artists and Machine Intelligence group, about generative AIs, Deep Dream, neural nets, AlphaGo and Deep Blue, artists working with machine learning, and what the technological enhancement of human imagination may, ultimately, look like.

Justin Johnson, now at Facebook, wrote the original Torch implementation of the Gatys 2015 paper, which combines the content of one image and the style of another image using convolutional neural networks. Manuel Ruder’s newer 2016 paper transfers the style of one image to a whole video sequence, and it uses a computer vision technique called optical flow to generate consistent and stable stylized video sequences. Ruder’s implementation was used, by me, to generate a stylized butterfly video, located at https://medium.com/@SamPutnam/deep-learning-zero-to-one-art-generation-b532dd0aa390

O'Reilly Bots Podcast - O'Reilly Media Podcast

The O’Reilly Bots Podcast: Hilary Mason, Jimi Smoot, and Roger Chen on what AI means now.Something remarkable is happening in the world of artificial intelligence. At the O’Reilly AI Conference in New York, people weren’t just talking about AI as a far-off dream; they were talking about AI as something that exists in real products today. In this episode of the O’Reilly Bots podcast, I talk with three artificial-intelligence practitioners about the real practice of AI: Hilary Mason, Jimi Smoot, and Roger Chen. Hilary Mason, founder and CEO of Fast Forward Labs, a startup that conducts research on machine intelligence, says that today’s AI “gives us a capability that would have seemed like magic even five years ago, and yet that capability is not nearly as interesting as the fact that the app is actually useful.” We also talk about the potential of AI-generated content, and some products that provide a glimpse of what a new AI-written world might look like. My second conversation is with Jimi Smoot, founder and CEO of Vesper, a hybrid AI and human assistant that helps executives with tasks like scheduling and travel arrangements. AI that augments human functions is likely to be a facet of the next economy. Smoot says that “early in the process with a new user, having a human touch is critical to developing trust.” Finally, Roger Chen, co-chair of the O’Reilly AI Conference, talks about what the term AI really means, the origins of the AI Conference, and how companies can implement AI now.  “I think a lot of these interfaces that we call AI and bots are just going to be known as seamless, great experiences and interfaces,” he says. O’Reilly’s upcoming Bot Day on October 19, 2016, in San Francisco, will provide more insight on AI for bots. This chapter in the saga finds Jason Bourne giving up the spy game and living completely off the grid, earning his keep as a bruising slugger in the Eastern European underground fighting circuit. That's until he's pulled out by his old crony in the CIA, Nicky Parsons, who has gone rogue to deliver intel to Jason that she's hacked regarding the identity and mysterious death of his father, as well as his key involvement in a top-secret government operation. Tenacious CIA director Robert Dewey is hot on their trail, but he doesn't so much want Bourne to come in out of the cold so much as think he is better off dead for being unobtainable and knowing far too much, which might jeopardize their current plot to utilize a monumentally popular social-media platform dubbed "Deep Dream" to spy on the majority of the world's population. Dewey's underling, Heather Lee, meanwhile, searches for a way to get Bourne on board without taking him out.
