Por eso la mayoría de las traduciones de este versíuculo prefieren usar en su lugar la palabra (humildes) (DHH, NVI, TLA, etc.) o «apacibles» (RVR1977). Lutero explica esta declaración de Jesús en estos términos: «El mundo emplea la fuerza para poseer la tierra; Jesús nos enseña que la tierra que vale la pena es ganada por la mansedumbre». La tierra prometida es, evidentemente, la patria celestial (cf. Sal. 37: 11).En numerosas controversias relacionadas con ideas políticas he escuchado decir que «todos queremos la paz», dando por supuesto que todos somos pacíficos o humildes, es decir, «mansos». Pero cuando observo el comportamiento frecuente de quienes sostenemos esa afirmación, la veo muy alejada de la realidad comprobable.Si somos realmente «mansos», ¿por qué nos impacientamos si el conductor que circula delante de nosotros parece tardar demasiado en arrancar? ¿Por qué, en algunas conversaciones, en vez de escuchar los argumentos del otro apenas si lo dejamos terminar de hablar? ¿Por qué, hasta en cosas banales, nos cuesta tanto poner la otra mejilla? ¿Por qué cuando estamos presenciando un match deportivo, aunque sea por televisión, tendemos a denigrar o insultar a los jugadores del equipo contrario? ¿Estamos seguros de desear la paz con verdadera mansedumbre?¿Y cuando nos enfurecemos deseando que ciertos culpables reciban ración doble del castigo decretado, o queden públicamente inhabilitados para siempre, además de recibir la multa y el castigo que se merecen?David Bush cuenta que, al comienzo de la guerra del Vietnam, el pelotón norteamericano al que pertenecía se hallaba agazapado en un arrozal cuando, de repente, seis monjes aparecieron avanzando en fila india por el sendero que separaba a un bando de otro.
