In this episode of Native Circles, co-hosts Dr. Farina King and Eva Bighorse speak with Dr. T. Christopher (Chris) Hoklotubbe and Dr. H. Daniel (Danny) Zacharias, co-authors of Reading the Bible on Turtle Island: An Invitation to North American Indigenous Interpretation (2025). Chris Hoklotubbe, a citizen of the Choctaw Nation, holds a ThD from Harvard and serves as Director of the Indigenous Theology Circle and Coordinator of the Graduate Studies Group for NAIITS: An Indigenous Learning Community, the first accredited theological institute designed, developed, delivered, and governed by Indigenous peoples.Danny Zacharias is a Cree-Anishinaabe/Métis and Austrian scholar from Winnipeg, Manitoba (Treaty One Territory) with ancestral ties to Treaties Two, Three, and Five. He lives in Mi'kma'ki (Nova Scotia) and is Associate Dean and Professor of New Testament Studies at Acadia Divinity College, as well as adjunct faculty and journal editor for NAIITS.Together, they explore what happens when the Bible is read from Turtle Island through Indigenous histories, geographies, and intellectual traditions. The conversation examines scripture's entanglement with colonization, missionization, and boarding schools, and highlights Indigenous survivance, responsibility, and resurgence. Rather than treating the Bible as a text detached from land and power, Chris and Danny open space for Indigenous-centered approaches that honor both sacred text and sacred place.Resources:Reading the Bible on Turtle Island: An Invitation to North American Indigenous Interpretation by T. I joined John DeRosa on Classical Theism to discuss the reliability and authorship of the Pastoral Epistles—1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus—and why the traditional view that St. Paul wrote them remains historically strong. In this conversation we walk through:How I got into New Testament textual criticism and early patristic sourcesWhat the “Pastorals” are and why scholars group them togetherModern scholarly views on the Pauline corpusThe earliest evidence for Pauline authorship (and why it matters)Major objections: vocabulary, church structure, and “developed theology”Additional lines of evidence often ignored in popular treatmentsPermission granted to share this interview on my channel. The Pastoral Epistles (1 Timothy 5) by Orchard Hills Bible Church
What are the pastoral epistles? Why do modern scholars think that St. Paul did not write them? What arguments favor traditional authorship? Dr. Stephen Boyce joins us to discuss these issues. ---------- The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others. As Paul continues to discuss public worship in 1 Timothy 2:8-10, he mentions two "dispositions" (Robert Yarbrough) that can get in the way of public worship: anger and an undue concern with appearance. January 11, 2026Helpful resources that shaped and informed the 1 Timothy Series: The Message of 1 Timothy & Titus by John Stott; The Pastoral Epistles by Osvaldo Padilla; 1 Timothy by Philip Graham Ryken; 1-2 Timothy & Titus by R. Kent Hughes & Bryan Chapell; The Letters to Timothy and Titus by Robert W. Yarbrough; 1-2 Timothy & Titus by Andreas J. Kostenberger; 1 & 2 Timothy/Titus by Walter Liefeld; Exalting Jesus in 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus by David Platt, Daniel Akin, & Tony Merida.
As Paul gives his instructions for public worship, he tells Timothy that he should pray for everyone. Why? Well, as he goes on to say in 1 Timothy 2:4-7, we should pray for everyone because God "desires all people to be saved" (1 Tim. 2:4, ESV) and has sent Jesus as a "ransom for all" (1 Tim. 2:6, ESV).November 16, 2025Helpful resources that shaped and informed the 1 Timothy Series: The Message of 1 Timothy & Titus by John Stott; The Pastoral Epistles by Osvaldo Padilla; 1 Timothy by Philip Graham Ryken; 1-2 Timothy & Titus by R. This sermon is the first in our series on the Pastoral Epistles titled "The Gospel, The Church, and Godliness." Pastor Brad Talley lays the foundation for the series by looking at the implications found in the first eleven verses of 1 Timothy 1. In these verses the gospel is front and center in all that Paul has to say to Timothy. Pastor Brad reminds us that this is also true for us, that the gospel guides everything we do. The gospel is the foundation for all that Christians do.

After Paul was released from Rome and as he made his way back toward Jerusalem, Paul dropped off Timothy to be the primary teaching pastor in Ephesus for a season. We learn why he did that, by eavesdropping on this letter. 1 Timothy 1:3: As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines. This book, one of the three so-called Pastoral Epistles, is addressed to a local church and regional pastor-teacher, but it is included in the New Testament canon for the edification of us all. Everything Paul asked of Timothy and Titus was to be passed on to their congregations, and by extension, to us. The verses in our cross hairs today contain two commands, surrounded by supporting reasons and encouragements. 1 - Be A Good Servant (6) 2 - Point Out The Right Things (6) 3 - Consume The Best Things (6) 4 - Reject Distractions (7) 5 - Discipline Yourself (7) 6 - Here's Why (8-9)
