“You have captured my heart, my treasure, my bride. You hold it hostage with one glance of your eyes, with a single jewel of your necklace. Your love delights me, my treasure my bride.” Song of Songs 4:9-10Song of Songs is the last of the Biblical wisdom literature and puts a bow on our time with Solomon. It's a book not commonly taught from because of its intimate nature, but I was grateful to find somebody who is actually currently teaching through this book at his church. Dr. James Hamilton is Professor of Biblical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is the Senior Pastor at Kenwood Baptist Church. In this conversation, Jim and I talk about the rich theological truths of Song of Songs, what we can learn from all of Solomon's writings, the connection between Song of Songs and Genesis, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “What do people really get for all their hard work? I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:9-11Ecclesiastes is one of my favorite books of the Bible. I might be weird in this, I don't know many other people who would say Ecclesiastes is their favorite. To me, it's one of the most human books in the whole Bible. Not only does it have some of my favorite verses, but it's such a relatable look at one man's struggles. Ecclesiastes is another entry in the Wisdom Literature of the Bible, along with Job, Psalms and Proverbs and, even though it may not seem like wisdom literature at first glance, it becomes clear why the more you spend time in it.To help us navigate the book of Ecclesiastes is Dr. Richard Belcher. O LORD, I give my life to you.2     I trust in you, my God!Do not let me be disgraced,    or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat.3 No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced,    but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others.4 Show me the right path, O LORD;    point out the road for me to follow.5 Lead me by your truth and teach me,    for you are the God who saves me.    All day long I put my hope in you.6 Remember, O LORD, your compassion and unfailing love,    which you have shown from long ages past.7 Do not remember the rebellious sins of my youth.    Remember me in the light of your unfailing love,    for you are merciful, O LORD.Psalm 25:1-7The Book of Psalms is without question one of the most well-known books of the Bible. You open up your Bible in the middle and you're likely to open to a Psalm. Psalms are read at weddings and funerals, you see them written on artwork and mugs and frames. But how should we read the Psalms? What does Psalms teach us about God and about ourselves? Today I'm grateful to have Dr. Tremper Longman navigating us through the book of Psalms. Dr. Longman is the author of How to Read the Psalms, the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary on Psalms, and was one of the lead translators for the New Living Translation or NLT. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Then Job replied to the LORD:2 “I know that you can do anything,    and no one can stop you.3 You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?'    It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about,    things far too wonderful for me.4 You said, ‘Listen and I will speak!    I have some questions for you,    and you must answer them.'5 I had only heard about you before,    but now I have seen you with my own eyes.6 I take back everything I said,    and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.”Job 42:1-6The book of Job is perhaps the most unique book in the Old Testament. Up until this point we had been reading narrative accounts of historical events, but Job ushers us into new territory as a wisdom literature book. It tracks events that happen in the life of a man named Job . . . but it does leave you to wonder if these events really happened as written, or if this is a different type of literature exercise altogether. Most importantly for the book of Job though is what it teaches us about God and about ourselves and there's a central question at the very heart of this book that will completely change and shape how you read it. To help us navigate the book of Job is Dr. John Walton. Dr. Walton is professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Wheaton College and other of many books including How to Read Job and the NIV Application Commentary on Job.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. The journey through suffering - Job, a righteous man whom God had blessed with divine provision lost everything, including his children, health, and relationships. God responds to Job's questions by asking questions. 2. The significance of restoration - When Job prayed for his friends, he was restored. He received double portions as God's favor. The three daughters are named, described, celebrated. Names were prophecies in antiquity. -Jemimah. New beginning like dove after flood -Kezia. Valuable and beauty -Keren-happuch True beauty is a divine blessing Points for home:  We don't understand suffering  Be patient until the end  Suffering can transform Listen to Mark teach the wisdom of God exceeds our understanding. True wisdom often begin with humility. We will never understand God fully, but we can understand him truly. Faith first, then recovery. God's restoration exceeds our expectations.

Context and Characters:  Israel is under oppression from the Canaanite army led by Sizer who has control of the Jezerel Valley. The people are regulated to the mountains where it is not suited for agriculture and the trade routes are blocked. Deborah was Israel's prophet and judge who commands Barak to lead Israelites into battle and defeat Sisera. Jael was a woman from a tribe friendly to the Canaanites who drives a tent peg into Sisera's temple. The Narrative Tension: Describes one story from 2 perspectives in Judges 4 and 5. 3. The theological implications (Take Home Points): God can use unexpected deliverers 2. God uses the everyday stuff 3. Have courage Listen to Mark teach how God works thru everything. He still rescues and provides for us despite time, culture, and circumstances.

I resonate with Job because his path was like mine in some ways. He struggled with the same philosophical problems that I struggled with and that many Christians struggle with: the problems of evil and suffering. And in my life it led to a spiritual awakening, just like with Job.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, they kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ.  Amen.  TODAY'S SCRIPTURE: JOB 17; ACTS 24-26 follow us at www.dailyradiobible.com We are reading through the New Living Translation.   Partner with us! All of us deal with anxiety or fear of some kind, and to some amount, for some period of time. As I was studying for NLP certification, I came across this: "Based on metaphysical thinking, there is only one real emotion on the planet--- love. All negative emotions are derivatives of fear." part of my work then is to help people be rid of fear, whether via NLP, or just by being a friend. Our fears can range from what someone said to me recently: "I'm feeling a little out of control," to something as extreme as in the Bible: Job 2 verse 9: "Then said his wife unto him, doest thou still retain thine integrity? Curse God and die." He was really going through some stuff and she was done with it.  Some of our fear takes the form of stage fright. Some is just regular old--- and I mean regular old, though it can be crippling--- anxiety. Some fear is well-founded and some is not. Most of it will put us in a state of fight or flight, and spending a lot of time there will destroy your body, your mind, and your relationships. Anxiety / fear of any kind, and excitement, are almost physiologically identical. As far as your body is concerned. They're the same thing. So what's the difference? What makes one shut us down and the other one get us all jazzed about what's about to come? The answer is all in your head, literally. Here are some things that will help you find excitement, in place of fear and anxiety.  I can help you find excitement and hope for the future. Go to natewalkercoaching.com, click on the contacts page, and tell me how I might be of assistance. There are great things that you and I can do, and great tools that I have available to help you. Referenced article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5149447/

Psalm 75:1-10 - Jesus Drank the Cup of Our Judgment

But God is the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another. For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, And the wine is red; It is fully mixed, and He pours it out; Surely its dregs shall all the wicked of the earth Drain and drink down. Psalm 75 was written by Asaph as a song of victory and celebration to be sung, a poem to be read, a worship hymn of praise and of thanksgiving, of how the Lord had miraculously delivered Jerusalem from the powerful Assyrians. He and the inhabitants of Jerusalem were elated to discover one morning how the Lord had sent one angel during the night to slay 185,000 Assyrian soldiers and send the rest of them and their king back home to Assyria. Asaph proclaimed, “We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.”   King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem were “lifted up” by God and “exalted”, while the enemy was put down and humiliated! Asaph the musician, then writes this song and acknowledges that God is the judge of all the earth and in His time, he will execute His judgment on the ungodly that will not repent! In verses 4-5, Asaph has a word for anyone who is arrogant and boastful and warns them that one day they will have to deal with Jehovah God!   In verses 6-8, Asaph encourages God's people to apply His Word to our lives. How easy it is to hear God's message, leave the meeting, and then forget to obey what we heard! The real blessing doesn't come in the hearing of God's Word but in the doing of it. Remember the admonition in James 1:22-25, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”   The word translated "lifted up" or "exalted" in verses 6, 7, and 10 has to do with God delivering His people from trouble and setting them free. In verse 6, the Old Kings James translation uses the word "Promotion" rather than “exaltation”. Promotion has nothing to do with getting a better job or being highly publicized. The arrogant were lifting themselves up only to be cast down by God, but the humble wait on the Lord and He lifts them up (1 Peter 5:6).   When Asaph says that this “exaltation does not come from the east, west, or the south”, (the desert, Egypt).  A Jew could search in any direction, the east, west, or the south, but he would never find anybody who can do what only God can do. Why is north omitted? To look in that direction would mean seeking help from the enemies, Assyria and Babylon! (See Jer. 1:13-16; 4:6; 6:22-26.)   Only the Lord can truly deliver His people! This is the story line of the Bible! God delivered Joseph and made him second ruler of Egypt. God delivered David and made him king of Israel (1 Sam. 2:7-8). God delivered Daniel and made him third ruler of the kingdom.   In verse 8, God has a cup in His hand, “And the wine is red; It is fully mixed, and He pours it out”.  The cup is a familiar image of judgment in the Bible (Job. 21:20; Isa. 51:17, 22; Jer. 25:15ff; Rev. 16:19; 18:6). The Jews usually drank wine diluted with water, but this cup contained wine mixed with strong spices, what they called a "mixed drink." (Prov. 23:30).     My friend, we as believers can go home from the worship service trusting the Lord to deliver us and judge our enemies! But the ungodly should go home concerned about future judgment. Thank God, the Lord Jesus Christ drank the cup for us on the cross! (Matt. 26:36-46). But those who refuse to trust Him will drink the cup of His judgment to the very dregs.   God bless!

In today's conversation, we're going to jump head first into the deep end as we wade through the story of Job. We're going to discuss the perplexing and often-overlooked truth that our story is interwoven into a much bigger one—a heavenly one, which we can't fully understand any more than we can fully see. We're going to confront the tension we often feel when we try to reconcile what we believe about God's sovereignty and character with what we observe and endure in regard to suffering. And we're going to talk about what we should and should not do (and say!) in response to the suffering of others. So, pull up a chair at our table, and let's dive into the conversation.
