Iddo Moed arrived in Ottawa only six weeks ago to take up the post as Israel's new ambassador to Canada. He hasn't even presented his credentials to Governor General Mary Simon yet, which means he isn't permitted to make direct contact with Canadian politicians until that ceremony takes place. Nevertheless, Moed is making Israel's position clear on who is behind the unprecedented surprise attack by Hamas over the weekend that has killed at least 700 Israelis, wounded thousands more, and saw Palestinian terrorists kidnap over 100 people, including possibly two or three Canadians. While Moed said Iran was clearly the mastermind behind the Hamas onslaught that began Saturday Oct. 6, he suggested that the international community, including Canada, should rethink its habit of sending funds through the UN to help Palestinians in Gaza, since that money winds up instead being used to incite terrorists who carried out “barbaric” acts of hatred of Jews and Israel. Since 2016, when Canada resumed funding the UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East), the Liberal government has sent or pledged at least $300 million. Despite this contentious issue, Moed welcomed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's declaration of support for Israel now, including the move to light up the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill on Sunday with the Israeli flag. Moed joins _The CJN Daily'_s Ellin Bessner from Ottawa. “I never tire of it,” said today's guest, Roberta Gal, her mischievous eyes all a-twinkle. Born into a creative family, Roberta worked as a graphic designer for 25 years (work she also loved) before pulling her first love out of her back pocket – photography – and landing a job as photographer for Public Works Canada. While she took a pay cut for this job, it included shooting the renovation of the historic houses of Parliament in downtown Ottawa... she saw this as an incredible opportunity to be part of history. The chance thrilled her, and she took it! We talk about this, and photography she does outside of work too, in this meander. It was a pleasure and a joy for me to talk with her, learn about her past, and see the world through her eyes.EPISODE LINKSRoberta recommends following the Instagram account for Public Works Canada, where videos and some of her photos, are featured. If you scroll down, you'll see an incredible video of when the stain glass in the Peace Tower was removed for preservation work.

Wednesday, Nov. 3: The federal government is expected to announce on Friday that it will raise, and re-lower Canadian flags on federal buildings and on the Peace Tower, for Remembrance Day.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has ordered flags flown at half-mast on all federal buildings, including the Peace Tower on Parliament in Ottawa, after the remains of 215 Indigenous children were found at a residential school.Trudeau says the move is to honour the 215 children whose lives were taken at the former Kamloops residential school and all Indigenous children who never made it home, the survivors, and their families”.Indigenous community leaders and many others had called on the government to lower flags across Canada after a First Nation in the province of British Columbia announced that the remains of 215 children had been found on the site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School.
