Ceri talks with artist Hannah Perry as she shares her journey from a working-class background to becoming a renowned contemporary artist. Hannah discusses her major solo exhibition at Baltic Gallery, navigating the art world, and balancing creativity with motherhood. Her insights on resilience, collaboration, and staying true to oneself offer invaluable lessons for artists at any stage of their career. KEY TAKEAWAYS Hannah's working-class background and dyslexia diagnosis led her to pursue art, finding her voice through identity-based work at Goldsmiths University. Collaborating with diverse creatives in DIY spaces and warehouse living fostered Hannah's interdisciplinary approach and artistic growth. The Royal Academy provided Hannah with practical skills, nurturing support, and valuable connections in the art world. Hannah emphasises the importance of maintaining long-term relationships with supporters and collaborators throughout one's artistic career. Balancing commercial work with experimental projects can help sustain an artist's practice financially while allowing creative freedom. Hannah's process for developing major exhibitions involves extensive research, collaboration with curators, and adapting to unexpected life changes. Self-care strategies, such as exercise and maintaining personal relationships, are crucial for managing the emotional highs and lows of an artistic career. Hannah advises artists to take action and seize opportunities, rather than becoming paralysed by overthinking or fear of failure. BEST MOMENTS  "I ended up going to like a vocational college to do a-levels alongside, like potentially a vocational subject, but I couldn't really find my space, there I found out I was dyslexic" "I think what Goldsmiths gave me was like a thinker's degree, if that makes sense." "I try and counteract is that I always try and like, get up and do like, a training program, go for a run, cycle into the studio, just do anything to just get up and get moving" "I think from my perspective, I've always found it useful to just go for every opportunity that is possible, rather than kind of thinking too much about, like, you know, potential risks or potential problems." "When you sort of find something that you really excel in when you sort of struggled in a lot of areas, you know it's the right place for you to be." "You ignored the advice, you applied and you got in." "It's always probably going to be a thing of like figuring out how to best, how to make something work, essentially, with what you've got, and that takes a lot of time." Collaboration with others can create amazing things, as long as you are willing to compromise and deal with obstacles to accomplish your goals together.  Having more failures than successes isn't a bad thing. It's how you learn and grow as an artist and leads to better collaborations. It helps you create what you really want to and helps you not care about the critics. He grew up in Toronto and got his creative start attending high school at the prestigious Etobicoke School of the Arts along with two future members of BSS, Emily Haines and Amy Millan. After his interests changed from acting to music, he teamed up with Charles Spearin for a recording project called K.C. Accidental and released two records. The duo gradually blossomed into the more ambitious Broken Social Scene, and in 2007 he recorded his first solo release, Spirit If..., the first in a proposed series of solo records by various members of the mega-group. His second solo record wouldn't appear until seven years later, following the success, and eventual 2011 hiatus, of Broken Social Scene. While recording his solo follow-up, Drew began working with Canadian singer/songwriter Andy Kim of classic pop group the Archies, which reignited his creative flair and inspired him to finish his second offering Darlings, which was released in March 2014. The help of talented musicians and mixers helped Melanie create the sound she was looking for. To create her versions of the songs she chose, Melanie faced the challenge of working on her songs during the Pandemic lock-down. She had to pivot to create these songs at home instead of in a studio, truly putting blood, sweat and tears into the project.  As an artist, she feels the need to reflect on experiences and share them with others, and Melanie sees her album as a way of connecting with her community about past and current struggles with racial tension. The Brooklyn born and raised, Melanie Charles, is one of these artists. Over the past few decades, she has made a name for herself through dynamic engagements with jazz, soul and R&B. Her bold genre-bending style has been embraced by a range of artists including Wynton Marsalis, SZA, Mach-Hommy, Gorillaz and The Roots. In 2021, she appeared on NPR's Tiny Desk and stunned with her eclectic style. Through it all, she has remained committed to making music that pushes listeners to consider new possibilities—both socially and politically. “Make Jazz Trill Again,” a project that she launched in 2016, demonstrates her allegiance to everyday people, especially the youth and is focused on taking jazz from the museum to the streets. “I love jazz, I really fell in love with it deeply. But I was interested in young people interacting with it,” Charles says. The album Y'all Don't (Really) Care About Black Women is reflective of Charles' tremendous versatility and imagination as an artist but of also her deep care for community. PEG Interviews Melbourne songstress TAMS/N OTWAY BIO: Melbourne identity and songstress TAMS/N OTWAY offers uninhibited tenderness in her new release "Fallen Angel" "Fallen Angel" has character and sass and radiates Witchy/western/film noir vibes.
You can almost smell the toes on the dashboard as the name "Quinton Tarantino" appears on the screen before you.
This song belongs in that world.
The protagonist? An Angelic Cowgirl who's fighting for redemption.
It's sure to take you on a journey of ups and downs with tension and release, leaving you wanting more. With a voice sounding like it was braised in champagne and lightly massaged between the hands of angels, TAMS/N offers both vulnerability and control in their new release. Episode 024, Rural Radio Show, mixed by @EmptyShelter One month ago we had the pleasure to release “A N D A N G E L”, a four track EP by Empty Shelter including remixes by @Distale_Berlin and @Andy-Arias, and we want to thank everyone for the great support and feedback on it. https://soundcloud.com/ruralsoundsrec/sets/rur005-empty-shelter-andangel-ep Today, we’re very excited to have them on our Radio Show showcasing some their particular Techno space, welcome to the show Empty Shelter. Empty Shelter is the fusion between @Du_Sant and @Miino-Block, 2 recognised minimal producers from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who decided join forces working on this project as a duo and trust me, the combination of both sound imprints is a true outstanding quality Techno. They’ve been releasing their music since 2010 on labels such as Krad Records, La Boheme, minim.all, Loob Label, HDR Limit… and of course Rural Records, where they remixed Christ Burstein’s (@djchristb) “Knowbody Knows” on our very first release almost a year ago now, and which remains still on the Top 2 of our most sold tracks on Beatport. With no more delay, we let you enjoy for the next 30 minutes in the mix, @EmptyShelter! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Artist Links: www.facebook.com/emptyshelter.music www.soundcloud.com/emptyshelter www.beatport.com/artist/empty-shelter/575092 Rural Radio Show is a bi-monthly podcast that aims to bring you the very latest in underground music, a global collection of Deep, Tech and House sounds with exclusive guest mixes and hot releases. www.rural-music.com www.facebook.com/RuralSoundsRec

I then selected pod safe artists (from music.podshow.com) who all hail from Boston, MA to keep with a bit of a theme and tribute to my old stomping grounds.
