Episode 328: On June 30, 2009, the serene waters of the Rideau Canal in Kingston, Ontario, revealed a dark and tragic secret. A submerged car discovered that day contained the bodies of three teenage sisters—Zainab (19), Sahar (17), and Geeti (13) Shafia—along with their father's first wife, Rona Muhammad Amir (52). What initially appeared to be a tragic accident soon unravelled into a chilling tale of premeditated murder. The perpetrators, Mohammad Shafia, his second wife, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, and their son, Hamed, were arrested on July 23, 2009, and later convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Shockingly, the victims were Mohammad Shafia's daughters and his first wife. This heinous act, driven by twisted notions of family honour, shocked the nation and highlighted the grim reality of honour-based violence. Join us as we delve into the harrowing details of the Shafia family murders, a case that not only captivated Canada but also sparked crucial conversations about domestic violence and the challenges faced by immigrant families in preserving their cultural values while integrating into a new society. This April, his latest immersive documentary is Tripping the French River. The mode of travel this time is aboard a cedar strip canoe as we travel from Lake Nipissing on a three-hour paddle towards Georgian Bay. If you haven't taken one of these TV trips before you'll get so close to nature you may find youself tripping outdoors all on your own! To help address the climate crisis the city of Boston is piloting the replacement of natural gas with ground-source heat pumps in a public housing project. The technology also brings clean air, cooling and heating to historically disadvantaged tenants, advancing environmental justice. Also, the warmer winters of climate disruption are bringing shorter and shorter skating seasons on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Canada. We head into the Living on Earth archives for a taste of days gone by, when reporter Bob Carty hit the ice to meet locals enjoying the serenity of a skate along the canal. And the oceans cover 70 percent of our “blue planet” yet remain largely unexplored because of the intense pressures at depth. But there are some intrepid few who have descended into this “underworld” and lived to tell of its marvels. -- We rely on support from listeners like you to keep our journalism strong. Patrice Dutil meets Alastair Sweeny to talk about the remarkable career of Thomas McKay, a Scottish immigrant to Canada in the 1820s who went on to build a remarkable business career in the Ottawa area. McKay was a mason, and a very good one at that. Using his skills to build projects in Quebec and then the locks on the Rideau Canal in Bytown, he emerged as a virtual “laird” in the area, founding a variety of businesses and creating new architecture, including Rideau Hall, today the residence of the Governor General of Canada. The discussion of McKay's career includes his significant role in Scottish immigration in Canada and the politics of Upper Canada. Alastair Sweeny is the author of Thomas MacKay: The Laird of Rideau Hall and the Founding of Ottawa, published by the University of Ottawa University Press). 'SCALE (Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency) is a national round table for the arts and culture sector to mobilize around the climate emergency. A few months ago, you and I, and a few others were all having the same realization that while there was a lot of important work and projects happening at the intersection of arts and sustainability in Canada, there lacked some kind of structure to bring this work together, to align activities, to develop a national strategy, and to deeply, deeply question the role of arts and culture in the climate emergency and activate the leadership of the sector in terms of the mobilization that needs to happen in wider society. SCALE is really trying to become that gathering place that will engender that high level collaboration, which hopefully will create those positive tipping points.'Judi Pearl, e59 conscient podcast, OttawaJudi Pearl is currently Associate Producer, Artistic Projects for English Theatre at the National Arts Centre and a board member for The Only Animal. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Infrastructure Minister Catherine McKenna says her decision not to run again in a federal election was a “difficult” one and that while she plans to take the summer to weigh her next move, her focus will be on working to keep fighting climate change. McKenna spoke with reporters alongside the Rideau Canal pathway in downtown Ottawa, which is part of the Ottawa Centre federal riding she won away from the NDP in 2015. She shut down speculation that she is eyeing a possible run in the Ottawa mayoral race, saying her decision comes after reflections during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was a difficult decision but it's the right one for me and my family, and it's the right time to make it,” she said. “Like many Canadians, living through COVID-19 over a very long year made me step back and reflect on what matters to me most. It was quite simple, two things: my kids and climate change.” GUEST: Laura Babcock, President of PowerGroup - While recent events have brought some of Canada's worst historical crimes into international focus, a clear majority of Canadians do not support calls to “cancel Canada Day,” according to a new Leger poll commissioned by Postmedia. Across virtually every age, region and political affiliation polled, most Canadians intended to celebrate the July 1 national holiday, are cheered by the sight of the Maple Leaf and — all things considered — saw Canadian history as something worth celebrating. ALSO: Sending COVID-19 Vaccine Doses to Developing Countries - June 29, 2021 – Leger Poll GUEST: Dave Scholz, Executive VP of Leger - The discovery of hundreds of children's remains in Kamloops, Brandon and Cowessess have exposed the absolute devastation settlers inflicted upon Indigenous children, families and communities through the Indian Residential School system. Ian Mosby, historian of food, Indigenous health and the politics of Canadian settler colonialism, uncovered that between 1942 and 1952, Canada's most prominent nutrition scientists performed highly unethical research on 1,300 Indigenous people, including 1,000 children, in Cree communities in northern Manitoba and at six residential schools across Canada. Many were already suffering from malnutrition because of destructive government policies and terrible conditions at residential schools. In the eyes of researchers, this made them ideal test subjects. What is the beckoning of the unknown? The word beckoning means: to make a gesture to encourage someone to come nearer or follow. The unknown is a constant presence and we usually fear the unknown, but how can we instead allow it to beckon us forward. I was inspired to chat about this concept through my own musings and through examples coming forward in my life right now after reading a beautiful passage on Mystic Mamma from Deepak Chopra: We all experience the new and the unknown, but few of us see the unknown as a force that is beckoning us. The unknown contains clues to another reality. “What are those clues? They change every moment, but if you look closely at any image the world presents to you, more of your own self will start peering back. “The seeming randomness of events will begin to resolve into form and meaning, as if a part of yourself is saying, ‘I’m here. Can you find me?’ On this episode I describe my time at the Old Mill Manor in Almonte and the beautiful stone manor I enjoyed with my boyfriend for his birthday. And I also talk about our time snowboarding at this cool groovy 70's ski lodge called Mount Pakenham. I then dive into the spring equinox and spring arrival as nature as a spiritual process and how it relates to the unknown. I chat about the long runs that have led to this spiritual inquiry and looking at nature through the lens of the unknown as I run in Chaffey's Lock and the lakes of the Rideau Canal region. I also dive into my human design and how knowing my energy type has refreshed my sense of creation and how to best navigate life based on my design. Knowing my specific design has reminded me to find patience in the unknown and allowing life to present things for me to respond to. I also share the insight that came to me recently on the home/cabin I am looking for and how to work with the frequency of that place and allow it to find me. This perfectly goes with my strong interest in interior design and creating spaces and how I have been loving the HGTV show Home Again with the Fords and the nuggets of wisdom I am learning from Leanne Ford, how she uses what she has, reimagines spaces and problem solving in creative design. This is correlated to the creativity found in nature and ultimately how nature is a creative living spiritual process. Most recently, she published a memoir about her parents' final years in Ottawa: All Things Consoled. She has been writing since she was fifteen, and also spent ten years working as a radio broadcaster, living in Yellowknife, Winnipeg, Toronto and Latin America. Ben sits down with Elizabeth in her Ottawa home to talk about her books, her writing process, and much more. About the Guest I was born in 1951 in a beautiful part of the world. Owen Sound, Ontario, is on the southern shores of Georgian Bay. When I was five, we moved about twenty miles north to Wiarton on the Bruce Peninsula, a small town defined by limestone cliffs, icy water, poison ivy and an abundance of colourful characters. I roamed as freely around Wiarton as I did through books. My otherwise strict parents let me read whatever I wanted to. With Eric Friesen at The Lodge on Amherst Island, April 2008. My father was the high-school principal. My mother painted in her spare time, not that she had much time, since I was one of four children. The public library was almost a second home, a place in which I didn’t have to set the table or do the dishes or cope with being teased. I read good and bad alike. We had no television until I was nine, when we inherited my grandmother’s television set and were allowed to watch it for two hours a week. It stopped working after a few years and was never replaced. Then when I was almost ten, we moved inland and about a hundred miles south to another small town, this one on the edge of Alice Munro country. My five years in flat, agricultural Mitchell were probably the worst in my life—the years of puberty, unpopularity, self-consciousness. When I was fourteen, everything changed. Out of the blue my father moved us to London, England for a year and the world opened up in a thrilling way. I saw places every reader dreams about—the British countryside and famous cities—and I went to plays, ballet, art galleries, to Covent Garden as it used to be. That year I attended Camden School for Girls, where by accident (a random English assignment) I discovered that I could write poetry of a sort. A year later we came back to Canada, settling in Guelph, Ontario, where I finished high school. My years at the University of Toronto convinced me that what I needed was not academia but the real world. At the end of second year, I hitchhiked to Newfoundland, and at the beginning of third year I dropped out for a year and took the train to the west coast, eventually making my way to the Queen Charlotte Islands, now Haida Gwaii. I returned to university at the end of August and completed my third year, but went no further in school. After that, I moved west again, then north to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories to join the man who would be my first husband, Craig McInnes. The northern photographs on the website are his. In Yellowknife I began to work in radio. During the ten years I was a broadcaster, I was a writer with a split personality, writing to a formula for radio and writing privately in the notebooks I began to keep. It took me a long time to see that the clarity and economy and directness required to tell a story to a radio audience would serve me well in whatever I wrote. After Yellowknife, I moved to Winnipeg, then Toronto, and then I freelanced in Latin America for a time, basing myself in Mexico. While in Mexico I met Mark Fried and we have been together ever since. We have two children, a daughter and a son. For six years we lived in New York City, where I put together my first books, Crossing the Snow Line and The Only Snow in Havana, and gathered the experiences that I used in Captivity Tales: Canadians in New York. Finally, my homesickness became intolerable and I dragged everyone to Ottawa, where we’ve been since 1992. Small Change, the collection of stories about friendships gone wrong, draws on material from throughout my life and explores the pain we experience in the name of friendship. My neighbourhood is Old Ottawa South, the setting for part of my first novel, A Student of Weather, and for all of my second novel Garbo Laughs. The Rideau Canal is two blocks away, the Rideau River an easy walk in the other direction. The streets look much as they did in the 1950s. It’s a quiet backwater, which suits me. I like to walk, I don’t like to drive and avoid it. The Sunnyside branch of the public library is a ten-minute walk from my house. I use it a lot. Almost directly across the street from the library is the Mayfair movie theatre, in constant use since the 1930s. This is the part of the world, not Ottawa but the Ottawa Valley, where my mother grew up. It has a lot of emotional resonance for me as a result. While I was writing my third novel, Late Nights on Air, I was already making notes for my fourth, Alone in the Classroom, which focuses to a large degree on the Ottawa Valley. His Whole Life, which has the 1995 Quebec referendum woven through it, moves between New York City and a lake in eastern Ontario. All Things Consoled, a daughter’s memoir is about my mother and father at the end of their lives. They both died in Ottawa, in a retirement home a six-minute walk from my house. From the age of fifteen I have been writing. The great struggle has been to believe that I have enough imagination of the necessary kind to write compelling material. I am dogged but self-doubting, and happiest at my desk. Learn more about Elizabeth. Mentioned in this Episode Late Nights on Air, 2007 novel by Elizabeth Hay All Things Consoled, 2018 memoir by Elizabeth Hay A Life in Letters by Anton Chekhov, a collection of letters published in 2004 for the hundredth anniversary of his death Video of the comedian Louis CK saying "everything is amazing and nobody is happy" His Whole Life, 2015 novel by Elizabeth Hay DH Lawrence, English writer (1885-1930) The Only Snow in Havana, 2008 novel by Elizabeth Hay Succession, an HBO television drama The Crown, a Netflix television drama Oedipus Rex, an ancient Greek tragic play by Sophocles Tomas Tranströmer, Swedish poet and Nobel Laureate Gustav Mahler, renowned 19th century composer Charlie Kaufman, American screenwriter of films such as Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind A Moveable Feast, a 1964 memoir by Ernest Hemingway "The Mere Presence of Your Smartphone Reduces Brain Power, Study Shows", article from the University of Texas Margaret Atwood, Canadian writer A quote from American writer Kurt Vonnegut: "Novelists have, on the average, about the same IQs as the cosmetic consultants at Bloomingdale’s department store. Our power is patience. We have discovered that writing allows even a stupid person to seem halfway intelligent, if only that person will write the same thought over and over again, improving it just a little bit each time. It is a lot like inflating a blimp with a bicycle pump. Anybody can do it. All it takes is time." Franz Kafka (1883-1924), German-speaking writer Beryl Bainbridge (1932-2010), British writer The Quote of the Week You are confusing two notions, "the solution of a problem" and "the correct posing of the question". How does water turn into ice? Why is ice sometimes slippery and other times sticky? Why is it so cold? Why does it float? How are icicles made? Why are icebergs mostly underwater? What was the ice age? We'll get answers to all of those questions with help from Celeste Labedz of the California Institute of Technology. And we'll take a trip to the world's largest skating rink, the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Ontario.

Today’s show is a case study of a specific project which my wife and I visited this weekend. It seemingly has all of the right elements. The location is one of the best in the city. It’s directly across from the Rideau Canal one of the most historic and picturesque waterways in North America. During the winter months, the canal is the site of the world’s longest 7 mile skating rink. The property is walking distance to restaurants, shops, two universities. It’s in the heart of the community and still has lots of green space right outside your doorstep. The location counts some embassies in the same area overlooking the canal. The project is being developed by an experienced development team who have completed several other successful projects. The architect is one of the premier architects in town. The general contractor is one of the largest and most established contractors in building concrete structures in North America having built numerous high rise buildings, government office towers. They have over 14,000 employees and have been in business over 100 years. The showroom and sales center is situated in an old church that resides on the site of the future condo tower. The developer took the project through the entitlement process and the project is approved. The six story building has a few technical challenges. It’s across the street from the Canal which means that the water table is going to be extremely high. The underground parking will have to be protected from water intrusion that will ultimately be present. This will increase the cost of construction. The site is not that large. The original plan was for 32 units on 6 floors. The floorplans are large and spacious. The terraces and balconies are luxurious and spectacular. Once you have a project that is entitled, that process defines the envelope of the building. It defines the setbacks from the property line, from the street, and the height. In some cases, if buildings are going to be higher than other properties in the area, the city will require the upper floors of the building to be set back and have a smaller footprint so you don’t have a huge rectangular block. This creates tremendous opportunities for roof-top terraces on the upper floors. But there’s one small problem. The units are not selling. Why? Because in my opinion they’re too expensive. In fact the developer has pulled all the pricing from their marketing materials and have stated that they’re in the process of redesigning the interior. They plan to increase the number of units from 32 to 40 without changing the exterior envelope of the building. There simply isn’t that large a market for apartments at the 2.5M price point. Underground parking spaces are going to be priced at $45,000 each. At the end of the day, the target clients are going to be people who are empty nesters who want a property in a premier walkable location combined with the security of a lock and leave condo. They want to know that the maintenance of the building is handled and that they can spend a few months away in the winter without having to worry about taking care of their property. The problem is that the price point is too high. As developers we tend to think in terms of price per square foot. But retail buyers don’t think in those terms. Retail buyers think in terms of price point, of affordability. Tenants don’t think in terms of rent per square foot. They have a monthly budget of so many dollars per month. They might want a large two bedroom for that price, but if they can’t get it, they’ll accept something smaller that fits within their budget. If you’re choosing to develop a premium product, pay very close attention to your market demand and be prepared that it could take a lot longer for your project to sell than you imagine.

If the Stanley Cup Could Talk

Hockey Hall of Fame curator and Keeper of the Cup Philip Pritchard joins Tim to talk about the history and lore of the Stanley Cup and how it’s unique among all professional sports trophies with its own personality, and the stories it could tell. Wherever the Cup goes, Phil goes with it as the Keeper of the Cup. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/The_Stanley_Cup_-_If_the_Cup_Could_Talk_auphonic.mp3   Photo Credit: Hockey Hall of Fame The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy that professional athletes in North America compete to win.  It was a donation in 1892 from Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby. He wanted to present the trophy to "the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada." The first team to ever win the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association in 1893. In 1910, the National Hockey Association took possession of the Stanley Cup. Since then the trophy has been symbolic of professional hockey supremacy. Starting in 1926, only NHL teams have competed for the Cup. The Stanley Cup has changed shape several times. Tiered rings supporting the actual bowl were added periodically. Then in 1927, long narrow bands were added. These were later replaced by uneven bands in 1947. On those bands are the names of every member of the winning teams who have won the Stanley Cup. Over time, bands have been retired to make room for new champions. Retired bands, along with the original Stanley Cup bowl, are displayed in Lord Stanley's Vault at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Each year once the trophy is presented to the NHL’s champions, the Cup goes on tour as each of the organization's players and staff enjoy their own 24 hours with the Cup. To say that players have a special relationship with the Cup would be an understatement. In its many years of existence, the Stanley Cup has traveled around the world, including stays in Russia, Japan, and Switzerland as well as atop mountain peaks in the Rockies. In all of professional sports, no other trophy has the lore of the Stanley Cup. Philip Pritchard is curator at the Hockey Hall of Fame and is better known as the Keeper of the Cup. The Stanley Cup goes nowhere without Phil. What Players Have to Do to Win the Cup The Stanley Cup Playoffs are four rounds of a best of seven series. There are 60 minutes in every game, and that is without overtime. Every shift a hockey player takes, especially in the playoffs, he’s giving 100% and more. They play with broken bones and other injuries willing to accept the pain in the hopes of winning the Cup. This after an 82-game regular season. Players’ Relationship with the Cup Some players are wary of the Cup if they haven’t won it yet, and steer clear if they’re still in contention—in fact, some players on conference champion teams won’t even touch the respective Western Conference Campbell Bowl or Eastern Conference Prince of Wales Trophy so they don’t jinx their team’s chances at the real prize. The Cup Went Swimming Three Times Following their 1991 victory over the Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux hosted the team at his house. When Lemieux wasn’t looking, his teammate Phil Bourque decided he wanted to see if the Cup could float—and threw the trophy into Lemieux’s swimming pool. It didn’t float, and immediately sank to the bottom (thankfully, it was recovered unharmed). Two years later the Cup also found the bottom of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Patrick Roy’s pool. In 2002, Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hašek attempted to swim with the Cup. The Ottawa Hockey Club, now known as the Ottawa Senators, won the Cup in 1905, members had a little too much to drink and took the trophy outside and decided to test their accuracy by trying to kick the then-small Cup into Ottawa’s Rideau Canal. Once they achieved their goal, they went on their way and forgot about it—then they realized the next day that the...
