When burglars break into Hope Mausoleum and violate Crypt 1083-A, where the remains of the former Girod Street Cemetery are housed, New Orleans property crimes detective Thibodeaux “Bo” Duplessis is confronted with three confounding questions: Who are the burglars? Why did they break into the crypt? What, if anything, did they take?In need of expertise he does not possess, Bo turns to his childhood friend Bruneau Abellard, a cranky, overweight antiques dealer with exacting epicurean standards and a font of historical knowledge. Affecting annoyance, though privately intrigued, Bruneau agrees to assist with Bo's case. Together, the friends uncover a secret love affair between a famous antebellum actress, whose remains are contained in the crypt, and the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte. As their investigation deepens, they find themselves confronting two separate yet entwined mysteries, two hundred years apart. To solve the present-day crime, they come to realize they must first unravel a conundrum from the distant, murky past.Set against the singular backdrop of contemporary New Orleans, with glimpses of the city during its “Belle Epoque” of the 1820s, The Lafitte Affair is populated with characters as eccentric as the city itself: a grand dame of the Garden District; a competitive female puzzler; a slippery con man; a giant hermit with a shrouded past; a pugnacious French bulldog; and a phantom thief who seems always two steps ahead of his pursuers. Looming over them all is the ghostly presence of the pirate Lafitte, a larger-than-life figure of seemingly endless contradictions.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Tecovas wants to be more than just about cowboy boots. The ten-year-old company has big plans to become a high-end Western wear lifestyle brand. "Initially, it sort of was known as the Warby Parker of cowboy boots, if you will," said CEO David Lafitte on the Modern Retail Podcast. "We've tried to sort of migrate the positioning of the brand into more of a premium lifestyle brand." Lafitte -- who previously held C-suite positions at Deckers -- has been leading Tecovas for the last two years, and his mandate has been to expand beyond its cowboy boots roots. That includes expanding the brand's apparel line as well as growing its retail footprint. The company, which has locations in 20 states, adds between 10 and 12 store every year. By 2023, it had 33 locations and is on track to open 11 stores this year. The stores, according to Lafitte, are integral to Tecovas's success. For one, the locations are experiential playgrounds -- most have liquor licenses and they all focus on one-to-one connections with customers. What's more, the stores present a way for new customers to learn about Tecovas and its products. Right now, apparel represents around 20% of Tecovas's revenue. The brand is focused on growing that -- as well as growing its overall women's business. Along those lines, as Tecovas continues to expand, it is going into new areas that aren't necessarily associated with Western culture. It is opening a location in Boston, for example, and is keeping an eye out for another East Coast spot. "We've been looking in New York. We want to find the right spot," said Lafitte. "I'd like to be in Soho."

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the sixteenth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is the Brigade Fire Support Officer Observer-Coach-Trainer with Task Force Fires, MAJ Westly “West” LaFitte (Fox 20).   Joint fire support includes joint fires that assist air, land, maritime, cyberspace, and special operations forces to move, maneuver, and control territory, populations, airspace, cyberspace, electromagnetic spectrum (EMS), and key waters. Effective joint fires produce effects beyond the proportion of effort expended in execution. Effective fires are efforts that have both immediate and long term effects on the enemy's capability and will to prosecute the war.   In this episode they discuss joint targeting cycle challenges, insights, and best practices for integrating and synchronizing joint fires. Fires are normally used in concert with maneuver, which helps shape the battlespace, setting conditions for decisive action. At the brigade echelon, this methodology focuses on the employment of fires within the brigade's deep-fight with the maneuver battalions focused on the brigade's close-fight. Another effective employment method is their use to support the brigade's close-fight, which incorporates the use of the maneuver battalions' mortars into the fires plan. Time is a commodity that must be safeguarded through the establishment of battle rhythms and the adherence to the targeting cycle to ensure shared understanding and synchronization. Brigade and division fires plans should use both kinetic and non-kinetic to codify types of actions while using effects or outcomes to describe desired results.   Part of S07 “Joint Fires Discussions” series.   For additional information and insights from this episode, please checkout our Instagram page @the_jrtc_crucible_podcast   Be sure to follow us on social media to keep up with the latest warfighting TTPs learned through the crucible that is the Joint Readiness Training Center.   Follow us by going to: https://linktr.ee/jrtc and then selecting your preferred podcast format.   Again, we'd like to thank our guests for participating. In a recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers," retired FBI Special Agent and Chief of the Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, Robin Dreeke, joined host Tony Brueski to discuss the recent sentencing of Russell Lafitte, the former CEO of Palmetto State Bank. Lafitte received a seven-year federal prison sentence for assisting Alex Murdaugh in defrauding clients of nearly $2 million from legal settlements.   Reflecting on the situation, Dreeke expressed sadness and uncertainty regarding Lafitte's claim of innocence. Dreeke said, "This one's really sad to me. And it's sad because I don't know what to think about it." He referred to Lafitte's behavior as being similar to a "frog in a boiling pot of water," slowly acclimating to the rising temperature until it's too late to escape.   Throughout the conversation, Dreeke reflected on his experience working with the FBI and examined the behavior patterns of those who commit heinous crimes. He emphasized that Lafitte's actions don't necessarily indicate that he was "born to do this," but instead, he was likely "wrapped up in some really bad people" and became part of the destructive path that resulted. In response to Dreeke's observations, Brueski agreed that Lafitte's situation was likely more complex than it initially appeared. He speculated that Lafitte may not have been fully aware of the extent of the fraudulent activities, possibly due to confirmation bias. However, he underscored that this doesn't excuse the former banker's actions.   In considering the role of Alex Murdaugh, Brueski suggested that his defense of Lafitte might be a result of either grandiosity or genuine remorse. He questioned, "Is he doing that because he's a pure psychopath looking for grandiosity? Or is he actually trying to be a decent human being, defending someone that he knowingly duped?"   The discussion turned toward Lafitte's sentencing, with Brueski questioning whether Murdaugh's defense of Lafitte had helped or hindered his case. Dreeke noted the importance of holding everyone accountable for their actions, stating, "No one is above the law, and if you're part of any of these horrendous things that's taken advantage of another human being, we're gonna get you."   Despite the complexity and ambiguity of the case, both Brueski and Dreeke agreed that justice had been served. Brueski summed up the sentiment, stating, "I think justice was served."   The conversation concluded with a sobering observation: Murdaugh's destructive behavior has far-reaching impacts that are still unfolding. Dreeke noted, "This is a lifetime of behavior that is unraveling before our eyes." Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In a recent podcast episode of "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski discusses the conviction and sentencing of Russell Lafitte, former CEO of Palmetto State Bank, with retired FBI Special Agent and show contributor Jennifer Coffindaffer. Lafitte was sentenced to seven years in federal prison for assisting Alec Murda in stealing over $2 million from clients' legal settlements. Despite Lafitte's continuous minimization of his role in the financial scheme, Coffindaffer strongly dismissed his claims of innocence. "These individuals like him who are involved in these complicated financial schemes know exactly what they're doing," she stated, adding that those involved in white-collar crimes are "amazing in terms of money laundering, in terms of how they see through these schemes." Lafitte, like many white-collar criminals, was seen as a respected member of his community before his crimes were unveiled. This often makes such criminals harder to identify, a fact Coffindaffer acknowledged during the podcast. Brueski asked if these individuals were harder to catch because they often held positions of respect within their communities. Coffindaffer agreed, pointing out that white-collar criminals are "typically not violent" and are "leaders in their communities," often highly regarded due to their affluence. These individuals "know how to manipulate others," she noted, which can enable them to carry out financial scams that victimize those less knowledgeable about money matters. While white-collar crimes can be complicated to prosecute due to the criminals' standing in the community, Coffindaffer asserted it became easier when considering the victims. "It's quite easy when you look at the victims and see what they've done in terms of stealing the money," she remarked. The prevalence of white-collar crime, according to Coffindaffer, is concerning due to the difficulty in prosecuting these crimes, especially if they do not reach the threshold of federal authority. Such crimes can often fall through the cracks, particularly when they are not "egregious enough" to warrant a federal investigation. "If the fraud isn't at least a million dollars, the bureau won't even get involved in it," Coffindaffer stated, highlighting the difficulties faced by local authorities who may lack the resources or the necessary expertise to handle these complex cases. White-collar crimes, such as those perpetrated by Lafitte, require in-depth forensic examination of bank records and wire transfers, which can be time-consuming and require a high level of expertise. Because of these challenges, Coffindaffer expressed concern that many of these crimes may be overlooked and not properly investigated, allowing criminals to evade justice. The discussion between Brueski and Coffindaffer sheds light on the intricacies of white-collar crime and the challenges law enforcement faces in identifying and prosecuting these criminals. The sentencing of Russell Lafitte serves as a reminder of the darker underbelly lurking beneath the surface of affluent communities and the potentially devastating consequences for unsuspecting victims. Thank you for your patience as this episode is publishing later than usual. As I said on social media, our team is in adjustment mode after the adrenaline and the chaos of the trial slowed down and we're all still trying to all recenter our focus.  Now that Alex Murdaugh has been convicted in the murders of his wife and son, it's time to take a look back on all the pieces that had to come together for the jury to deliver that guilty verdict. In the short time since Alex Murdaugh was convicted of murdering his wife and son, a lot has happened in the wake of his sentencing. This week on Murdaugh Murders Podcast, co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell take a look at the latest criticism of the murder investigation and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division — as well as Jim Griffin's strange post-trial social media presence and Russell Laffitte's defeats in the courtroom. They also talk with Sandy Smith about the next steps in finding justice for her son, Stephen Smith. To learn more about the planned Independent Exhumation and Autopsy for Stephen, click here: http://bit.ly/3JGacec A private medical examiner must be present from the start of the exhumation through the examination period at a cost of approximately $750 per hour. It is a huge expense, but we are hoping that with your support we can make this happen and finally get the answers we need. If you can give, we thank you for your generosity. If you cannot give, we would appreciate you sharing and praying for justice for Stephen. We believe 2023 is Stephen's year.
