Canada renews commitment to welcome people affected by the conflict in Sudan, released by on 20 February 2025   | Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Federal News Bulletin from CIC news release. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario. | News release February 20, 2025—Ottawa—Canada's approach to immigration supports community needs, economic objectives and humanitarian responsibilities. A key part of these responsibilities is Canada's long-standing commitment to protecting the world's most vulnerable, including people affected by the conflict in Sudan.  After violence erupted in Khartoum on April 15, 2023, Canada took on a leadership role, organizing discussions with like-minded countries to coordinate a response to the crisis. This included work to get hundreds of Canadian citizens and permanent residents and their family members out of Sudan, along with the launch of temporary and permanent immigration measures to help keep people safe and keep families together.  As part of our ongoing work to help people in the region, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced that Canada will resettle more refugees affected by the conflict in Sudan over the next two years and increase the spaces available under the family-based permanent residence pathway. These measures will be delivered as part of the existing Immigration Levels Plan and could help more than 7,000 additional people impacted by the conflict in Sudan.  Canada is committing to resettle up to 4,000 Sudanese government-assisted refugees by the end of 2026, and intends to support an additional 700 Sudanese refugees through private sponsorship. This includes up to 350 Sudanese nationals privately sponsored by groups of five and community sponsors for whom Canada also intends to waive the requirement for a refugee status determination document. More details will be available in the coming weeks.  The Minister also announced that the number of applications accepted into processing for the family-based permanent residence pathway will increase from 3,250 to over 5,000, which will allow Canada to welcome approximately 10,000 people under this pathway. The pathway will remain the same as when it launched in February 2024, but will no longer require the Canadian anchor to reside in a province or territory other than Quebec. We will begin accepting new applications under this pathway as of February 25, 2025. | You can always access past news from the Canadian Federal Government by visiting this link: https://myar.me/tag/fed/. And what happens if the country is forced to wait through months of a liberal leadership race without a functioning government to face the existential challenges from the incoming Trump administration? On today's show we are talking about international investing. Real estate investing is a hyper local business. But that doesn't mean you have to live near your investments. Live where you want to live and invest where the numbers make sense. There are many people who live in the North East of the US and only invest in Texas or Florida for example. In our company we are active in several states across the US and we are also active in Canada. We build what we think is the right product for a given location based on supply and demand and the financial metrics for that specific location. These are almost always special situations. These are special situations in the sense that it is a unique combination of circumstances that creates the inefficiency in the market and leaves behind what we believe is a glaring opportunity. Now I need to be clear, we are not scouring the market for opportunities. With very few exceptions, these have all come to us unsolicited.  It doesn't matter if the project is in Colorado or Florida or Utah or Canada. I'd like to invite you to attend an upcoming webinar on Tuesday evening to learn more about a new project in Ottawa Canada. Today's episode is not a solicitation for investment. Here is Robert Dvorkin's website! www.robertdvorkin.comRobert Dvorkin loved music and studied it at a high level when he was a young man. To pay the bills, Robert entered into a career in IT and continued to enjoy the piano, practicing and performing. Through a variety of circumstances, Robert moved back to Canada from New York City for his work in IT and came to a place where he wanted to get back into music full-time. As he had been studying the Taubman Approach with John Bloomfield since 2000, he was able to be certified in the Taubman Approach and is only one of three Canadians currently certified in this work. This episode frames the incredible journey of Robert in his love for the piano and teaching. He gets to the heart of why teaching this work is so important. People need music! I also want to say, the learning process is explored and some key insights into the work is discussed. Here is a bit more about Robert:I grew up Edmonton, AB, where I began to study piano at the age of nine. For five years, until I was 17, I studied with Ernesto Lejano. Dr. Lejano taught at the University of Alberta, but had a few private students, and I was privileged to be among them. He imbued me with a love for music that continues to this day. From there I went to the Indiana University School of Music (now the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University), studying primarily with Enrica Cavallo-Gulli. Maestra Gulli was a consummate musician, both as a soloist and as a partner in the Duo Cavallo-Gulli with her husband, violinist Franco Gulli. It was under her tutelage that I grew as a musician. I graduated from Indiana University with Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in piano performance. In 1988 I moved to New York City, where I lived for the next 25 years. While in New York, I taught and concertized in both the United States and Canada. In 1999 I began studying with John Bloomfield, who remains my teacher to this day. With John I intensified my study of the Taubman Approach, which I describe in detail here. I am certified to teach the Taubman Approach as an Associate of the Golandsky Institute, one of only three Canadians to have been so-honoured.In 2014 I repatriated to Canada, settled in Ottawa, and built a teaching studio out of my home in the Copeland Park neighbourhood. I continue to concertize, lecture, and teach privately. I teach practical piano as well as theory and harmony. I am currently accepting students from intermediate to advanced levels. Whatever your musical goals are, I know I can help you achieve them. Please feel free to get in touch! The Golandsky Institute's mission is to provide cutting-edge instruction to pianists based on the groundbreaking work of Dorothy Taubman. This knowledge can help them overcome technical and musical challenges, cure and prevent playing-related injuries, and lead them to achieve their highest level of artistic excellence. Please visit our website at: www.golandskyinstitute.org.

On today's show we are talking about the process for getting properties rezoned. The subject of today's show is a three parcel land assembly in my home city of Ottawa Canada.  At the start of the planning committee meeting there were no less than six projects being reviewed. Several that had contentious elements were held for further discussion after the procedural portion of the meeting. That front end portion of the meeting that lasted a total of 11 minutes. In that time, all of the projects were announced including our project. The committee basically uses that introductory session to set the agenda for the remainder of the meeting. We were asked if there was any public input. There being none, we asked if we wanted to make a presentation even if the committee recommended approval of the zoning application. Our self is always there and present throughout our whole life. Despite the many social, environmental and ecological changes as well as the major bodily changes, our self remains one and the same throughout the changes of our life. Where and how is the temporal continuity of our self coming from?   Georg Northoff is a philosopher, neuroscientist and psychiatrist, holding degrees in all three disciplines. He works in Ottawa/Canada holding a Canada Research Chair for Mind, Brain Imaging, and Neuroethics. His research focuses on the relationship between brain and mind. The question driving him is: “why and how can our brain construct mental features like self, consciousness, etc.”  His approach to this complex answer is as unique as it is simple: he proposes that the brain's constitutes its own inner time and space which, if properly aligned to and synchronized with the world's outer time and space, will yield mental features like self and consciousness.  This led him to develop a spatiotemporal theory of brain-mind relationship in all three fields, neuroscience, psychiatry and philosophy. He is one of the leading figures in linking philosophy, psychiatry, and neuroscience having developed non-reductive neurophilosophy. He authored over 300 journal articles and 18 books in neuroscience, psychiatry and philosophy which are translated into several languages including “Neuro-philosophy and the Healthy Mind” (2016) Norton Publisher, and “Neurowaves"  (McGill University Press 2023) and "Neuropsychoanalysis, an introduction" (Routledge 2023).   This episode is available also in German   All papers etc, can be found on the website: www.georgnorthoff.com See recent Podcast for broader audience: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDX3xOVHB18&t=237s   References: Spagnolo R, Northoff G (2022) The dynamic self in psychoanalysis. Since completing his term as a division head in 2019, he has continued to teach and practice oncology in Ottawa. He recently wrote the book A Short Primer on Why Cancer Still Sucks. It is intended for cancer patients, other members of the public, and non-oncology healthcare professionals. ✨A few highlights from the show: 1. The first reason that cancer still sucks is that it is everywhere. You can contract it no matter how healthy your lifestyle is or how pure your family history is. 2. A blood test such as a circulating tumor cell test detects cancer cells in your blood. The cells might be in the blood if they've broken away from where they started and are spreading to other parts of the body. 3. The US and Canadian healthcare systems each have strengths and weaknesses that help and hinder cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Folks there are about six weeks remaining in 2022. I believe goal setting is a critical component of success. If you have not started planning for next year, you are probably going to start the year without a solid plan. If you're planning in January, then you missed the starting gun. Every year, our team takes three days to plan the upcoming year. This year, we will be doing that work from December 9-11. It will be a face to face session held over those three days in Ottawa Canada. We have only a few number seats available for those who would like to participate in our planning process. This would be a seat at the table with our team as we develop our individual and personal goals for 2023. If you would like to spend these three days with us, send an email to goals@victorjm.com and we will send you information on how you can participate and work on your own goals following what we believe is a very solid process for goal setting. Send an email to goals@victorjm.com On yesterday's show we talked about the importance of learning from the GFC. It seems that the root causes of the financial crisis have been glossed over and not properly dealt with. Ben Bernanke who was the Fed chairman at the time has gone on record and said that the scope of the subprime mortgage loans was not sufficient to explain the magnitude of financial destruction that took place during those years. He also went on to say that the Fed lacked the tools to effectively deal with the crisis. The Fed stepped in to bail out some institutions. But the crisis did not appear first in the US. The cascade of dominoes started overseas and did not involve any US entities at first. The first inkling of a problem happened on Aug 7, 2007 when trading in three funds based in Lichtenstein virtually stopped. These were money market funds, denominated in US dollars, trading in London and securitized a basket of assets that were considered to be high quality, on par with US Treasuries in terms of quality. A credit bubble appeared in both the United States and Europe. This tells us that our primary explanation for the credit bubble should focus on factors common to both regions. Home prices in the UK, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy and Australia experienced similar effects to the United States. But as we discussed on yesterday's show, Canadian real estate was largely unaffected by the financial crisis. So why is that? What was different? Large financial firms failed in Iceland, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom, among others. Not all of these firms bet solely on U.S. housing assets, and they operated in different regulatory and supervisory regimes than U.S. commercial and investment banks. In many cases these European systems have stricter regulation than the United States, and still they faced financial firm failures similar to those in the United States. Did the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission really get to the root cause of the crisis? ----------------- Hoat: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com

I live in Ottawa Canada, and I invest primarily in the US. This fact has given me a unique perspective on markets. I started my investing career by investing in my home market. I made my first investment in 2006. After that, you might remember there was this little event that started about a year later. The Great Financial Crisis had a global impact in many ways. I saw the opportunity to deploy capital into markets that had seen a dramatic fall in price. I was still new at investing in real estate and I made a lot of mistakes in those days. Fortunately, prices were so depressed, that the market would eventually wallpaper over those mistakes. There were some powerful lessons from the GFC. What were they? Were the lessons global in nature or local? Not everywhere was impacted equally. Some markets suffered more than others. In fact, when real estate prices went down in Miami Dade County by 45.5% from 2008 to 2012, prices in Ottawa Canada went up 32.7% over that exact same five year period. In 2008 when prices in Miami fell by 28% in a single year, prices in Ottawa Canada went up 6.3%. So the question is why was Ottawa Canada so stable throughout the great financial crisis? If the GFC was all about subprime mortgages in the US, then why was the first bank to signal a problem on August 9, 2007, BNP Paribas, the second largest bank in Europe the one to come forward with a press release stating that they were having trouble valuing three funds that were on its balance sheet. The first financial institution to collapse was Northern Rock, a bank based in the UK. But wait, this was a US problem wasn't it? What does Europe have to do with it? On tomorrow's show we're going to talk about what the GFC was truly about.

When my husband and I quit our jobs to work in vineyards around the world in 2008, we spent six months in Blenheim, New Zealand. After work each day, I'd go to the Blenheim public library to siphon free wifi, but I'd just as often wind up in the stacks picking out books to read. One of those books was Red, White, and Drunk All Over: A Wine-Soaked Journey from Grape to Glass by author Natalie MacLean. I loved her humor, her description of how it feels to fall in love with wine, and her honesty about the appeal of a good buzz. Her writing definitely helped inspire me to be a wine writer. Fast forward fourteen years, and guess what? Natalie MacLean reached out to me to be on her podcast, Unreserved Wine Talk, which the New York Times named one of the seven best drinks podcasts to listen to in 2020. We also flipped the script so I could interview her here for CONSUMED. Natalie has a very, very long resume, including four James Beard Awards and the MF.K. On today's show we are talking about resilience in our daily lives. This past weekend my home city of Ottawa Canada has a line of summer thunderstorms come through the region. It was a few degrees warmer than usual and a bit on the humid side. By mid afternoon the sky had darkened . Then all the cell phones started chiming a severe storm alert in unison. Then suddenly this wall of wind hit thrashing the trees in all directions. Frankly, I'm surprised that the trees were left standing at all. Naturally we lost power. After the storm subsided we drove around the city looking for a restaurant that had electricity. There were vast areas of the city with no electricity and a few intersections that did have power. Let's be clear. What happened is an inconvenience. We might be days without power. We have no internet connection at home and the local cell tower has exhausted its battery backup. We will probably lose the content of our freezer in this extended power outage. We rarely even think about food insecurity let alone plan for that risk. But this year 2022 is a year like no other. We are emerging from two years of global pandemic and that feels awesome. But at the same time we have a devastating war raging in Europe. Crops that needed fertilizer this year didn't get it. Agricultural problems can't be solved with money. If you and I were stranded on a desert island and if I have a case of bananas and you have $1M in cash, I'm rich and you are hungry irrespective of how much cash you have. Food and fuel security are at the foundation of our western society. They are so foundational that they are taken for granted. We talk about affordability when it comes to housing. The basic rule of thumb is that housing should not exceed 30% of household income. We don't even calculate the percentage of food as a fraction of household income. But there are parts of the world like the Philippines where for major portions of the population food makes up 70% of household income. A 10-20% increase in food price here in North America is an inconvenience and for some households it's a problem. Nobody wants to pay $2 for a head of lettuce, or $5 for Broccoli. But if food makes up a large percentage of your household expenses, you don't have much tolerance for inflation before your very survival is threatened. We are already seeing social unrest in Peru, and Sri Lanka. The unrest was enough to force the resignation of the prime minister. The food shortages that are forecast for later this year will be like watching a train wreck in slow motion. I feel like I need to emphasize that I'm not a pessimist. If you have been following this show for a while you will know that I predicted the pandemic before it was mainstream news. I predicted the surge in inflation before the official reports. I predicted the fall in lumber prices before they happened. And I predicted the fall in the stock market. But with any of these predictions, it's hard to know the precise timing. You can be prepared, or you can be surprised.
