Send us a textWhat if a belief system you thought was just eccentric turned out to be fundamentally abusive? Apostate Alex returns to the podcast to unravel the complex activism efforts against Scientology in the UK, working with Members of Parliament to challenge the organization's behavior. From halting local Dianetics book sales to advocating for a parliamentary debate, we discuss the crucial shift in public perception needed to understand Scientology as an abusive organization, with a focus on educating law enforcement about the unique challenges faced by Sea Organization members.Moving into the realm of education, we share personal stories from Greenfields, a Scientology-affiliated school, where promises of an advanced education meet the harsh reality of financial barriers. With insights into how non-Scientologist students inadvertently encounter Scientology principles, we shine a light on prominent figures like Peter Hodkin and the influence they wield. Ongoing protests and legal challenges are explored, underscoring the broad implications of Scientology's reach and the efforts to counteract their maneuvers. We also confront the harrowing experiences within Scientology's Cadet Org, where restrictive policies and neglect paint a grim picture of childhood in the Sea Org. From systemic failures in child protection to the emotional toll on those who grew up within the organization, the discussion emphasizes the urgent need for safeguarding measures. Personal stories of isolation, neglect, and the intricate relationships within second-generation Scientology families highlight the moral responsibility to report abuses and ensure accountability. Let me take you back to the halcyon days pre-Covid. The biggest story around was Shane Jones and New Zealand First promising to make Northport the port of the future that New Zealand not only needed, but deserved. The port in Auckland was no longer fit for purpose. Northport would be the biggest infrastructure spend in New Zealand's history. It would revolutionise and revitalise Northland. There would be jobs, loads and loads of glorious jobs. The streets of Kamo and Kawakawa and Whangarei would be paved with gold. We were so close to pressing go on the project and which is not to say there wasn't pushback, trucking industry leaders, infrastructure planners, port operators wanted an evidence-based debate on the Upper North Island's port strategy, not Shane Jones's rhetoric. And they were concerned the official study focused on New Zealand First's preferred option of moving the port of Auckland to Northland. They said, well, let's have a look at a new ‘Greenfields' port at the Firth of Thames, that could handle things long term. Oh, the discussion raged on talkback with the fors and againsts. Then all of a sudden Covid arrived, and the biggest infrastructure spent in New Zealand's history was shelved while we spent billions and billions of dollars fighting a virus. But now Northport is back, and let's face it, it was never going to go away. Having a port in the middle of congested Auckland City doesn't make sense for the future, and surely there is no more room for the Port of Tauranga to expand. They've been turned down permission to expand or extend at Sulphur Point Wharf. So, the people of Tauranga and in The Mount are like, come on, you're big enough. According to the Environment Court, there's no room for Northport to expand either. Northport had applied for consents from the Northland Regional and Whangarei District Councils for a 13 hectare eastern extension, which would have been used as a dedicated terminal to accommodate future freight growth. The Environment Court said no, because of the significant adverse effects on cultural values of tangata whenua and the law on the loss of recreational values and public access to and along the coastal marine area. So now Northport's appealing that and I totally understand. They need to have a plan for growth and expansion, but we need a nationwide plan, not a local one. It needs to be across the board. And I totally understand that the Far North used to be the centre for import and export for the North Island, Dunedin and the South. Far North was always a place things came to and went out of. The Far North needs to be revitalised, it needs a shot in the arm, it's been neglected for far too long. Totally get that. But my main concern around Northport, well, with all due respect to the tangata whenua and the loss of recreational values, is how the hell do you get freight to and from Northport when the road's closed all the time? What are you going to do then? The Brynderwyns can't cope with the traffic it has now, where are the hundreds and hundreds of heavy transport vehicles going to go when the road is inevitably closed? The Brynderwyns were closed for 58 days in 2023, 17 weeks and counting this year with no guarantee that it's going to stay open the next time there's a deluge. And come at me with your narrow-gauge rail, because I vaguely remember the narrow-gauge rail arguments and our trains aren't big enough to take the containers. Yes, they are, said a few other train trainspotters and the trainspotters debate raged in 2019. But that's going to be a heap of infrastructure as well to upgrade the train tracks ready for the sort of freight that would be coming into and out of Northport. So yes, I would love to see the Far North revitalised. I would love to see Northport extend. It makes sense, it's close to some of the biggest markets, but surely not until we have the infrastructure to be able to take the trucks. And yes, there's a four-lane highway planned but let's see if that can stay open, because that beautiful, beautiful stretch of road that we can travel on sometimes, yeah, that's great but it doesn't stay open is there any guarantee a four-lane highway will? So where do we put a bigger, better port? Tauranga is struggling to expand. You can't get to Northport for 17 weeks of this year. Auckland's in the middle of a congested city, I can't imagine how much it costs with all the time wasting. Napier, Timaru, come back Dunedin? The Firth of Thames? What's the answer? CORRECTION: This piece incorrectly refers to the Environment Court declining the port expansion. It was not the Environment Court, it was independent commissioners.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Isaiah 56:1-8 shares God's message of not only tolerance but radical welcome for the ultimate Others of the biblical world: eunuchs. Kathryn Parker & Olivia Lloyd are owners of The Veiled Mirror, an online store of antique jewelry & curiosities with a penchant for the romantic, dark and macabre based out of Richmond, Virginia. To start this tour of Victorian culture [1837-1901], we begin with a crafting fad, ornate floral wreaths made of human hair. From there we touch on mourning etiquette; the comical paraphernalia of secret society initiations; The Aesthetic Movement; showing off with a pineapple; & the accessories of women's fashion as eccentric as live insects. Switching to the personal, the ladies share a handful of haunting anecdotes; one about researching a man's calling card found in a bin of 1920's clothing; another about unwittingly removing a "witch bottle" from an abandoned farm house. In 2016 stellar Canadian band 54.40 released an album La Difference: A History Unplugged. It was a brilliant reworking of their greatest hits. You could instantly tell it was one of their songs but the instrumentation and overall sound had been changed and made fresher. It brought new life to older songs and I thought it was a great move. Clever and classic. It takes a band working together to allow each member to express what they feel about a song they've been playing for years. 7 years later, here comes The Northern Pikes. They also have a nice collection of hits and the commitment to reimagine those hits and bring new life to them. Acoustically inspired. Before Covid changed the World, they had planned to release a 30th-anniversary salute to their landmark album Snow in June. A collection of Pikes songs driven by one of the best radio hits ever released in Canada – She ain't Pretty. This interview takes us through the group think about how to carry on and what it would sound like. The Pikes have just released an acoustically driven album called TIME TO TIME that includes 7 songs from Snow in June and three new songs. Between my radio life and many years at Much West, I crossed paths and got to hang with Jay Semko, Bryan Potvin, Don Schmid and the “new kid” in the band Kevin Kane (also a charter member of The Grapes of Wrath) This Mulligan Stew Podcast features a delightful gathering of Jay, Bryan and Kevin and myself. We could have filled the time just remembering stories from the late '80s and '90s but we had new versions of Pikes hits to talk about and play. Girl with a Problem, a Celtic feeling Green Fields, a smashing reworking of the title track and a She Ain't Pretty that still rocks – acoustically. Come hang with The Pikes and their album Time to Time
In the episode we chat to Rob Smillie, MD of Southern Gold, an exploration company exploring for precious metals in South Korea. They have a highly experienced team with a track record of exploration success in Asia, Australia and Eastern Europe and have a growing Brownfields and Greenfields exploration portfolio they are developing. Rob is an experienced management and exploration professional, with over 30 years of experience, including significant epithermal gold exploration, and is particularly working in Asia for the likes of OK Tedi, Calibre Mining and Oceana Gold. Rob gives us an overview of the company and what they are up to and what's South Korea like as a mining jurisdiction which many of you maybe surprised. KEY TAKEAWAYS Robert's experience has taken him from greenfield exploration to mining, all along the mining sector spectrum, making him well placed to act in any area of the business. South Korea's mineral potential is hugely attractive, and is massively unexplored by modern day standards. The mining business is a very small part of the economy in South Korea, and the rapid industrialisation means that high tech manufacturing is a vital part of the country's growth. There are a number of brownfields and greenfields projects under Southern Gold's belt. The main mine was mined over several levels to around 250 metres. With a third of the year already gone by, the so-called pandemic has quietly dropped out from the main media news, but more worrying is the war continuing in Ukraine with no end in sight. As you know, we've supported Ukraine & Russian musicians with no malice to the latter, any music from them kept out of the politics of this war. The lineup for this edition is mostly names that have appeared before on Sequences, except for Alpha Romeo's sublime mixes of retro synth urban vibes with quality production. Beatless mixtures of treated guitar and electronics inspired by nature and effects treatments by Trem 77. On Tone Science no 7 are modular synthesists Andrew Ostler, three aspects of drones sequences & audio processing, with Dark Sparkler creating a stormy shipwreck of a patch with siren calls & turbulent water., finally Shajan on the relaxing subtle and multi-faceted music from another excellent compilation from BSC Music. The vintage track comes from the prolific German experimental musician Conrad Schnitzler associated with West Germany's Kraut rock movement, who joined Tangerine Dream for their debut album Electronic Meditation in 1970 and the founder of the band Kluster. An evocative film-poem exploring the literary and other ghosts of the bohemian quarter bordering Dublin's Baggot Street during the mid-20th century where there was a radical flourishing of artistic and intellectual activity. A screening of ‘Ghosts of Baggotonia', followed by a Q&A with Alan Gilsenan and poet Seán Hewitt, will be held at the IFI in Dublin on Friday, December 9 and is screening in cinemas around the country. Alan Gilsenan is an Irish writer, filmmaker and theatre director. His work includes the cinematic documentaries Ghosts of Baggotonia, The Yellow Bittern, Then Meeting and Meetings with Ivor, the feature film Unless, based on a novel by Carol Shields and The Meeting, which he wrote and directed and premiered at the 2018 Dublin Film Festival. Trond Undheim, futurist, speaker, entrepreneur, venture partner, and the author of a new book, Augmented Lean in this second episode gets to the practical details of how flexibility can be achieved in manufacturing plants after a 50 year innovation hiatus. Trond draws on his industrial tech background, understanding of manufacturers' realities, and recognition of frontline workers' expertise to develop flexible, augmented environments. He recommends balancing inputs from both employees on the shop floor and management to “hack and govern” new solutions. Trond acknowledges these are long term paradigm shifts. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:57] Trond explains the deskless reality for factory workers results from forgetting to innovate for 50 years. [05:00] Adding multiple screens gives employees the data they need and freedom to walk around. [05:36] How no code technology now allows data to be widely available and accessible. [06:26] Up to date information augments workers' intelligence and real-time operational decisions. [07:03] The first killer application is digital work instructions. [07:52] Tech advances enable empathetic learning as feedback is immediate and uncontentious. [09:44] Augmented lean approaches technology integration in a smarter way—top down and bottom up. [10:54] Governance is an essential aspect of modern organizations. [11:42] The problems arising with top down only technology integration. [12:57] The benefit of bottom up analysis of bottlenecks and operating needs. [13:51] The advantage of workers' general understanding of operations and cross-training. [14:38] In manufacturing, employees have to be learning on the job, on site. [15:27] How can we expect an innovative workplace if the tools do not augment workers? [16:32] Greenfields permit shortcuts so workers can add digital apps to legacy systems. [17:44] What to do with legacy machines. [18:39] Taking a First Principles approach to production based on value creation. [19:10] Augmented lean is about context and flexibility. [20:32] “Hack and Govern” – hacking is bottom up and governing is top down. [23:58] Apps-based productivity in this digital revolution needs a certain amount of flexibility. [24:56] Empowering and inspiring frontline workers to show their experience and improve ROI. [26:15] How to get new workers interested in manufacturing jobs in the US. [28:08] What is factory work like now? What do factories look and sound like? [32:43] What does Trond think about Musk's edict “return or resign”? [34:25] Backlash or not, managers have a losing proposition trying to get everyone back to the office. [35:44] This decade, Trond does not see factory work being done 100% on site. [37:12] With significant advanced technologies, the shop floor has more pull than office environments. [38:52] New fluid interfaces that interact with workers—the factory floor wasn't ready at first. [42:01] With cyber-physical systems, ‘prototype to product' is not easy and can take time. [43:42] The vision of “lean” in Trond's new book. [44:54] Did we take a wrong fork in the road away from cyber-physical systems in the 1970s? [46:22] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Rinse and repeat! Use quick iterations to experiment your way through to positive change. Hack and Govern: the juxtaposition of bottom-up and top down approaches for a more balanced outcome. RESOURCES Trond Undheim on LinkedIn Trond on Twitter Futurized & Augmented podcasts Augmented Lean: A Human-Centric Framework for Managing Front-Line Operations, by Trond Arne Undheim Tulip.co QUOTES “If the tools that we are providing to the workforce don't augment them, don't make them feel meaningful, don't give them dignity, and don't give them knowledge, how can we expect to have an innovative workplace?” “You have to govern technology … but on the other hand, the internet revolution is all about hacking, it is about bottom-up initiative, about enabling your smartest nerds — who nowadays can be someone who didn't study computer science.” “There are so many exciting factories right now … they have robots, they have digital interfaces, factories don't look like you might imagine they do!” “Tesla is today's Ford — it is not a virtual organization of software programmers — Tesla produces something physical, they have factory floors, in fact, they have some of the world's biggest factories that they just opened in Texas.” “Software is easy, cyber-physical systems are hard.” “Think in sprints, allow hacks, don't forget to govern.” “There is no management of workers that doesn't include letting them experiment and try out new things, and there is no responsible management approach that lets everyone do their own thing.”
The man accused of leaving a mother-of-five for dead after hitting her with his car near Mandurah allegedly tried to cover up his crimes by dumping his vehicle before returning to the scene of the alleged crime with his young son and calling police claiming he had found Sherylee Bonney seriously injured on a bush track. Police say Ms Bonney, 39, was mowed down by Brayden Lee Bradshaw's Mazda BT50, in bushland just metres from her Greenfields home on Tuesday night. Mr Bradshaw was arrested on Wednesday and was held behind bars overnight before appearing in the Northbridge Magistrates Court on Thursday morning. She did her first Feis this month as a beginner and came in third place for Light Jig among 11 other kids. We were pretty excited. Before the Feis, I had a LOT of questions. I was not raised on Irish dance. I really know nothing about it. So last month, I contacted Emma Burke of Atlanta Irish Dance to find out more. Emma Burke was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in Atlanta. She is a former litigation attorney in the area and a classically trained flautist. Now she is co - founder of Atlanta Irish dance and is a certified Irish dance teacher and internationally certified Irish dance adjudicator, which allows her to judge Irish dance competitions world wide. During her Irish dancing career, Emma competed all over the world, winning titles throughout. Emma is also a four time Southern Region Champion, consistently placed top 5 in the North American Nationals, and competed in the World Championships of Irish dance many times where her highest placement was 13th, earning her a coveted World Medal. I asked her to tell me more about Irish dance. 41:52 - WHAT IS IRISH DANCE? Since I also wanted to know what to expect at a Feis, I asked Emma what a Feis is and what happens at a Burke Connolly Feis. I'll let her tell you more about it. 45:51 - MORE ABOUT BURKE CONNOLLY FEIS If you want to learn more about Irish dance, the instruments they play and the types of dances they do, make sure you join us on Patreon. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/freerangeinterview Our kids need us now more than ever... -Why are our children more sick, unfocused and depressed than any generation before them? -Is a shift in childhood education happening, what will it look like? -Why are more people homeschooling and unschooling than ever, and could it work for a busy family? -What is authoritarian parenting and schooling, and how will it hurt my child in their adult life? -If discipline doesn't feel right, what is the alternative? -How can we reverse autism and chronic disease and what role do vaccines really play? These questions and more were addressed in the recent Raising Free Range Kids conference, at which Yours Truly was invited to give a presentation on parenting. To be quite honest, I don't feel at all qualified to speak with authority on the topic of parenting as I've yet to finish the job of raising my two boys. I'd just as soon someone who has raised children into adulthood be a speaker at such an event, at which you'd find me on the front row taking copious notes. But in spite of my objections, conference organizer Robin Shirley insisted she interview me, my wife Jessa and my two boys River and Terran via Zoom about the lifestyle, rituals and experiences of life in the Greenfield home, and that interview is what you'll hear on today's episode. And you'll forgive the cow tongue meat occasionally stuck in my teeth... We did the call while we were having dinner! Meet Robin Shirley Robin Shirley is the Founding President of Take Back Your Health Int'l, a company that hosts health conferences and retreats across the U.S. She speaks, consults and writes about The Take Back Your Health Lifestyle and how to reduce the symptoms of chronic illness, especially in children. Robin is a mother of two beautiful babies, a passionate cook, a Medical Intuitive, Reiki Master Practitioner, Energy Healer, Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and a member of the American Board of Drugless Practitioners. She has helped thousands of people overcome the symptoms of Chronic Lyme Disease, Autoimmune Disease and Depression through her energy healing sessions, intuitive readings, and nutrition, detoxification and healing protocols. Robin grew up with chronic pain, headaches, rashes, depression, digestive discomfort and out-of-control systemic inflammation, and was diagnosed with Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at 11 years old. She tried everything to heal naturally. Food overhauls helped a little, supplements helped a little, but nothing truly took the pain away. At 23 years old, Robin was on track to file for disability and give up on her dream to run her own hospitality company. Robin has personally experienced the power of a natural approach to reducing pain and inflammation. Fast forward and Robin is now 32 years old, a mother of two beautiful babies, fiancé to the love of her life and running the business of her dreams. She is in the process of writing her first book and launching online healing programs for chronically ill patients to get healthy from home. Robin writes and posts about the Take Back Your Health Lifestyle on www.ClubTBYH.com During this episode, you'll discover: -The Greenfield family eating traditions... -The core message of Ben's upcoming parenting book... -Ben's morning routines... -Jessa's and the boys' morning routines... -How two new children affected Ben and Jessa's lifestyle... -Solidifying values and purpose specific to a family... -How River and Terran spend their days... -Silver linings discovered among the capricious clouds of Covid-19... -And much more! In this episode of GoGreenfields, River and Terran use one of their favorite fall harvest ingredients—pumpkin—in two different ways. The Greenfield family was very happy to have two delicious desserts awaiting them after dinner this evening. While Terran took on the classic pumpkin pie, River tried something new, creating a no-bake pumpkin-cheesecake for his harvest dessert of choice. As an added bonus, the co-hosts take their viewers on a tour of Greenfields' mini orchard in honor of the fall harvest season. *Many fall pie recipes call for Crisco or shortening. However, River and Terran do not bake with shortening, which has been shown to promote inflammation in the body, to be connected with fatty liver disease, to promote fat gain, and to be linked to type II diabetes. Fall Harvest Pumpkin Pie Crust Ingredients 2 ½ C flour 22T butter* Filling Ingredients 1 can pumpkin puree 1 can condensed milk 2 eggs ½ tsp ginger 1-2 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp nutmeg ½ tsp salt Directions Preheat oven to 425 degrees fahrenheit Combine flour and butter fully and form into a large ball Remove crust from bowl onto floured surface Roll into a circle (approximately ⅛” thick) large enough to fill the pie plate. Lay crust into pie plate and pinch edges, set aside In a separate bowl beat eggs with a fork Add pumpkin, condensed milk, and spices, and mix well Pour filling into pie shell and place in preheated oven Bake at 425 for 15 minutes Reduce heat to 350 and bake for an additional 40-50 minutes. Check the pie by sticking a knife or toothpick into the filling, one inch from the side of the plate. If it comes out clean, the pie can be removed from the oven. Let sit until cool before serving. For even better results, refrigerate overnight and serve with whipped cream. *Many fall pie recipes call for Crisco or shortening. However, River and Terran do not bake with shortening, which has been shown to promote inflammation in the body, to be connected with fatty liver disease, to promote fat gain, and to be linked to type II diabetes. No- Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake Crust Ingredients 5T butter 1T sugar ½ cup crumbled gluten free ginger snaps Filling Ingredients 1 c. heavy cream 2 blocks cream cheese (room temperature) 1 can pumpkin puree 1 c. powdered Swerve 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp. kosher salt Directions Combine crust ingredients in a food processor. Pulse until mixture can be easily rolled into a ball. Press the crust mixture into the bottom of a springform pan, so it is fully and evenly covered. Pour heavy cream into a separate bowl and whip with electric beaters until peaks are achieved. In another bowl, soften cream cheese further with an electric mixer. Add one can of pureed pumpkin to the softened cream cheese and mix thoroughly, until the mixture is free of lumps. Add Swerve, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and vanilla to the pumpkin mixture. Beat thoroughly, ensuring a smooth consistency. Fold in the whipped cream. Pour mixture over crust, and refrigerate overnight, or several hours, until set. Instead of your regularly scheduled episode of GoGreenfields, River and Terran wanted to share another recent project with you. The Greenfield family was very happy to sit down together for a Q&A session, during which they answered some of their viewers' most frequently asked questions. On Bengreenfieldfitness.com, this is described as “The Official Greenfield Family Q&A Podcast: Parenting, Cooking, Traditions, Legacy-Building, Family Game Nights & More!” There are certainly a lot of questions answered, and if you've ever been curious about what happens behind the scenes at the Greenfields' household, then this is the episode that you have been waiting for. For instance, did you know that River and Terran's mom, Jessa was the jock, while they consider their dad, Ben, to have been the nerd? The pair were married when they were just twenty-one years old, though, and have built a great family life and a professional empire together since then. Learn even more fun facts in this family Q&A!
