Kane has researched his butt off to tell us all about The Conet Project, a collection of shortwave radio recordings linked to espionage, conspiracy theories & the ever-mysterious numbers stations. Meanwhile Kane has also been watching Fake taxi, Netflix's Beckham & Disney+'s Only Murders In The Building.     I love making shortwave mixes, so it's hard to believe it's been almost 11 years since my last new shortwave creation. Yikes! I know these mixes are labor intensive and I am a terrible procrastinator but I am shocked that it's been that long. Here are the previous mixes: https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2007/04/drift-on-signal.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2008/06/ghost-in-phase.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2010/04/flicker-fade.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2011/03/distant-transmissions.html https://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2012/05/on-behavior-of-radio-waves.html This mix is a combo of real shortwave broadcasts, tracks that have broadcasts already embedded, and tracks that have that scratchy, radio feel. I couldn't resist adding a bit of Conet Project recordings here and there. Most of the straight radio broadcasts come from Myke Dodge Weiskopf. I've been using his recordings for years. You can find his stuff here - https://www.myke.me/ Two of my favorite cuts in this mix are by Mount Shrine from the album Shortwave Ruins. https://cryochamber.bandcamp.com/album/shortwave-ruins It's a perfect combo of ambience, drone, and radio chatter. Mount Shrine is Cesar Alexandre, who sadly passed away in 2021. His two tracks in this mix fit the vibe perfectly. I hope you enjoy the washes of static and voices from the ether. Hopefully it won't be 11 years until the next shortwave mix. Come along this week as we discuss the weird world of numbers stations.   Do you like coffee? Who doesn't! Check out these conspiracy themed mugs on Amazon. This is an affiliate link. Your purchase supports the show, and doesn't cost you anything extra.    Check out ExpressVpn! Get a special deal, three months free when you subscribe for a year, when you sign up using our link.   You can follow the show on twitter @alienconpod. We also have a facebook page. Join us on Discord for live shows, discussion, and other tomfoolery. New! We now have a subreddit.   There are many numbers stations. It is widely suspected, and in some cases known, that they are used for communicating with spies behind enemy lines. But some, such as the buzz, are used for an unknown military purpose. Still others may be simple hoaxes.   Some links for things mentioned in the show:   Websdr is simply awesome.  Basically it's ham radio receivers from all over the world that you can listen to from your computer. You can use this site to find receivers, and along with a number station schedule you can monitor for yourself in real time! There is also an option to record what you are monitoring. The waterfall display shows the frequency spectrum, and where traffic is at any given moment. Simply the best tool I have found, and it's free! Amazing.    Can't get enough numbers stations? have a look at the Conet Project. You can listen to or download the cd's for free several places online, such as the free music archive. This 4 cd set has been sampled in music, movies and TV shows.    Looking for a good website with tons of resources? Check out numbers-stations.com. This website has too much to mention, but there are descriptions for many of the known stations, sample recordings, articles, and much much more. Check it out!   Priyorm.org is another great resource. Similar to numbers-stations.com, it has descriptions, samples, a schedule of current stations, and more!   That should be good to start with, but if you want to go down the rabbit hole, there are a tremendous number of resources available online. Enjoy!

Listening in the Dark (Mystical Ambience #4) by Paul Asbury Seaman

"Listening in the Dark" is such a great title for an ambient mix. I've listened to a lot of these mixes in the dark - sitting on the deck at night, in bed before sleep, stargazing, etc. I wonder how many folks purposely listen to ambient & electronic music in the dark. I remember playing the Conet Project recordings in the dark and a friend said it was a little too freaky. This mix is definitely not freaky. This is the latest installment in Paul Asbury Seaman's "Mystical Ambience" series. And like the others, it's a great collection of tunes, some of which are not in my normal ambient rotation. But that's why I love getting mixes from Paul, they expose me to new artists and styles. Here's what he has to say about this compilation: “Here's another mixed genre program, including one (just one) spoken word song early in the set. I find it interesting that, metaphorically, darkness has many more layers than what we associate with light. It can be scary and impenetrable, but also part of the hero's journey into deeper understanding, or working through the infamous dark night of the soul. As Guy Clark says it, there's a world of things you can't see in the day time. And some folks take comfort in that.” Thanks for putting this together, Paul! Episode 68 Numbers   Playlist John Cage, “49 Waltzes For The Five Boroughs” from The Waltz Project (17 Contemporary Waltzes For Piano) (1981 Nonesuch). Piano, Alan Feinberg, Robert Moran, Yvar Mikhashoff. Cage worked by using chance operations to make decisions about key aspects of his works. So, by the nature of his method, he worked strictly by the numbers. But the choices become multifaceted when you consider how he applied these random choices to the matrix of sound sources available for a given piece. “49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs for performer(s) or listener(s) or record maker(s)” is a case in point. Think of the numbers. The work translates a graphic map containing 147 New York street addresses or locations arranged through chance operations into 49 groups of three (consisting of five players each). Cage used “hundreds of coin tosses and the I Ching” to arrive at a “tapestry” of sound, combining hundreds of traditional waltz fragments. First realized by Cage in 1977, the recorded version heard here uses three pianists playing the waltzes plus other ancillary sound making devices plus pre-recorded environmental tapes made in various parts of New York. 5:15 Timothy Sullivan, “Numbers, Names” from Computer Music From Colgate Volume 1 (1980 Redwood Records). Computer composition by Timothy Sullivan; Percussion, Frank Bennett. Created at the Colgate Computer Music Studio at the University Computer Center using a DEC PDP-10 with an on-line interactive system and a four channel digital to analog converter designed and built by Joseph Zingeim. 12:28 Philip S. Gross, excerpts from The International Morse Code: A Teaching Record Using The Audio-Vis-Tac Method (1962 Folkways). Including instructions and drills from the tracks “Numbers And The Alphabet,” “Learning The Numbers,” and “Numbers.” 2:23 Kraftwerk, “Nummern (Numbers)” from Live - Paris '76 & Utrecht '81 (2019 Radio Looploop). An unofficial release of a live performance in Utrecht, 1981. 3:37 107-34-8933 (Nik Raicevic), “Cannabis Sativa” from Numbers (1970 Narco). Self-released album prior to this record being issued by Buddha in the same year as the album Head. Recorded at Gold Star Studio in Hollywood, where the Moog Modular Synthesizer was played by “107-34-8933,” aka Nik Raicevic. From the liner notes: “What is the sound of tomorrow? The sound of notes or the sound of numbers?” 17:55 The Conet Project, “Recordings Of Shortwave Numbers Stations” (1997 Irdial Discs). Original 1997 release reports the following at the end of page 15 of the booklet: "A complete set of recordings of all known Morse stations will also be posted in the fourth quarter of 1997". I don't think that released ever appeared. The track included here is my edit of excerpted examples from the four-CD collection of numbers stations recordings from around the globe. 7:12 Thom Holmes, “Numbers” from Intervals (2017 Wave Magnet). A composition using recordings of numbers stations as the primary source, combined with audio processing and synthesizers. 5:57 Background music: Numbers stations remix (Holmes) based on tracks found on “Recordings Of Shortwave Numbers Stations” by The Conet Project (1997 Irdial Discs).   Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.

Earlier this year I was asked by the folks at Lifted Icons to do a guest mix. It was a unique mix because I did two 20 minute sets that were then incorporated into a larger nearly 2-hour mix.   The parameters for my mixes were as follows: 1. A lonely, melancholic wander through the void between stars 2. A triumphant end for our struggle to the stars   You can find the 2-hour mix at Lifted Icons here... https://www.mixcloud.com/LiftedIcons/cartographer/   I liked how everything turned out. It was especially fun to cut the 2nd mix as it had a few louder tunes that I normally might not use. I was too lazy to put together a totally new mix so I decided to put my two parts of the Lifted Icons mix into one new mix.    After I put them together I started tinkering. I added a few tunes to make it longer. And then I changed a lot of the first part but kept the same "drifting in the void" feel. The transition from melancholic wander to triumphant return starts at the 22:28 mark with the Underworld tune. The title for the mix comes from a track I used by the same name from Tony Anderson. It fit perfectly with the journey from part one to part two.   Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Lunar Testing Lab - Space Traffic Control(& added Nasa quindar Tones) 00:40    Steven Price - Aurora Borealis 01:50    Tim Hecker - Boreal Kiss 04:06    Chris Weeks - Spiders & Plugholes 05:42    Clinton Shorter - An Impossible Dream 07:25    Strië - Man with Thick Glasses 10:20    Northumbria - Helluland 13:10    Bryantist - Spherical Harmonics 14:30    Conet Project & other fx 14:57    Memories of JJ 18:12    Jon Hopkins - Feel First Life 22:28    Underworld - Capa's Last Transmission Home 24:12    Ólafur Arnalds - Doria 27:05    Tony Anderson - The Way Home 30:13    Stellardrone - Red Giant 32:30    Johann Johannsson - A Pile of Dust 34:20    M83 - Another Wave From You 35:50    Ulrich Schnauss & Jonas Munk - Amaris 38:25    B. Number stations are believed to be a form of espionage where intelligence agencies broadcast encrypted messages to field operatives. But no government has claimed responsibility for their existence.Number stations come in many forms. Some are beeps or sustained tones. Some are repeated bars of familiar folk songs.
