Join Beth and Leon for your monthly stargazing guide as they explore the Borloo night sky this May. With the arrival of cooler nights and the end of Bunuru, it's the perfect time to head outside on Star Wars Day (May the 4th!) for some celestial viewing. Spot the bright first quarter Moon alongside rusty-red Mars, both shining in the north. Below them, Gemini's twin stars Castor and Pollux frame a spectacular 7:13pm flyover of the International Space Station, zipping through the gap like a real-life starship.Further up, look for the hilarious “dog” constellation Canis Minor (made up of… just two stars), then continue turning right to find Leo the Lion, with its upside-down question mark mane and mythological ties to Hercules' very first labour. Peek further into Leo's rear to find the Leo Triplet three faraway galaxies, including one affectionately dubbed the Hamburger Galaxy.Early risers are in for a treat, too. On May 5th, the Eta Aquarids meteor shower will peak before dawn. Head out around 5am to face east and catch up to 30 meteors per hour, streaking from the Aquarius constellation. Venus blazes low on the horizon as the new Morning Star, while Saturn hovers above marking a beautiful pairing with the meteor display.May the 4th be with you—and don't forget to wave at the ISS!

The Mars InSight lander has been silent for two and a half years. Yet the craft is still teaching us about the Red Planet. In particular, it’s revealing more about what killed it: dust and the fickle Martian winds. InSight landed in late 2018 and operated for four years. It listened for marsquakes, and monitored the weather. It even recorded the soft sigh of the winds. The wind lofts the dust that coats much of Mars high into the sky. The dust then settles back to the surface. That “settling” was a problem for InSight. The lander was powered by the Sun. But as dust fell on its solar panels, they generated less and less energy. Scientists hoped the wind would clear the dust away, but it didn’t. So by late 2022, with its solar panels coated with dust, InSight fell silent. Scientists still keep an eye on the craft through images from a Mars orbiter. The pictures show that dust has completely covered the solar panels, giving them the same reddish orange appearance as the surrounding landscape. And the area cleared away by the lander’s rocket blast has filled in with dust as well. That tells scientists more about the planet’s winds and dust – the “killers” of Mars InSight. Mars stands close to the lower right of the Moon at nightfall. Its dust gives the planet an orange tint. Pollux and Castor – the twins of Gemini – line up farther to the right of the Moon. The first-quarter Moon is gliding across the constellation Gemini tonight. Gemini’s twin stars and the planet Mars form a bright arc above and to the upper left of the Moon at nightfall. Mars is the brightest member of the arc. It’s roughly twice as bright as the star Pollux, which is twice as bright as Castor. Pollux is just 34 light-years away. And it hosts a giant planet – one of our closest planetary neighbors. The planet isn’t likely to be inhabited, though – the star, the planet, and the system’s age all conspire against life. The star is past the prime stage of life, so it’s puffed up to giant proportions. That bathes the planet in light, making it hot. The planet – known as Thestias – is about three times the mass of Jupiter, the giant of our own solar system. That means it’s a ball of gas, with no solid surface – probably not a good home for life. And the system is only a bit more than a billion years old, so there hasn’t been a lot of time for life to take hold. On the other hand, if the planet has big moons, conditions there might be a bit more favorable for life. But those conditions won’t last long. Pollux will grow bigger and brighter in the future, making the moons even hotter. After that, the star will cast off its outer layers, blasting the planet and moons. Only the star’s hot, dead core will remain – zapping the surroundings with deadly radiation. More about the Moon and Mars tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

This month on Minnesota Night Skies, it's a quiet month as we wait for spring to finally arrive, but there are a few things to look out for. Aurora season continues over most of Minnesota! Mars aligns with Gemini's bright start Castor and Pollux on April 10. Look for the smallest full moon of the year, the so-called micro-moon on April 12.  Don't believe it?  Bob has tips to assemble photographic proof. Also April 12, there's a close conjunction with Spica in Virgo. Look for the peak of the annual Lyrid meteor shower April 22. Venus has flipped over to the morning sky after it passed between the Earth and sun. We'll have a nice conjunction of Venus, Saturn and the crescent moon on April 25 very low at dawn.   And watch Jupiter and Mars move to the east at a good clip this month as they orbit the sun.   Plus, for the first time ever, Bob reads poetry!   Next month on Minnesota Night Skies, another meteor shower to look forward to, plus more pleasant weather (we hope) to encourage folks to spend the night out under the stars.   Astro Bob is podcasting! Astro Bob King and Echo Press reporter and host Lisa Johnson did an astronomy radio show together for many years, and now they're back on a new podcast for all of Minnesota, called Minnesota Night Skies.  Bob King is an amateur astronomer, an photographer and author. His most recent book is called “Magnificent Aurora” about the Northern Lights. He writes a syndicated column for the Duluth News Tribune and is a regular contributor to Sky & Telescope magazine.  Bob recommends several guides to help you find what's up in the sky. For more information about the star maps and a local information calendar, you can check out Skymaps.com. Also look for  Stellarium Mobile where you get your apps. It's available for both Apple and Android phones.

Recently, as I scroll through TikTok I come across a rapper's profile that caught my attention. His name is Robert AKA "Castor Pollux". A true lyricist to the fullest degree. As someone who aspires to own the experience of performing a hip hop song on stage at somepoint, I am thoroughly intrigued. His appearance as a performer not exactly reflecting your standard Hip Hop representative, led me to believe he may have something to offer with his vocalized talent. HE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. Specifically, I'm fed videos of him behind a desk in a office cubicle. Wearing a cheesy polo apparently, lipsyincing to his own recorded songs. His chin draped in this ZZ top like beard narrowly avoiding a dip in his cup of Joe. I love the contrasting nature of his style. Reminiscent of a popular Hip Hop duo in the 90's titled "The High and Mighty", the sound of his unique voice and catchy cadence hypnotize the little chubby Hip Hop fan that resides within. Naturally, we hit it off as we journey into the past where it is revealed that our substitution for lack of a digital landscape fulfilling our need for adventure becomes the streets and it's inhabitants surrounding our broken family homes. A sacrifice of safety for a taste of the poetic yet dangerous side of reality. What better way than to transform the trauma into poetry. Spotify TikTok YouTube

The Grand Canyon is impressive – a multi-colored chasm that’s 275 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and more than a mile deep. But compared to the largest canyon system on Mars, it’s like something a toddler dug in a sandbox. Valles Marineris extends a quarter of the way around the planet – almost 2500 miles from end to end. At its widest, it spans 120 miles – so far that you couldn’t see from one rim to the other. And it’s more than four miles deep. Valles Marineris is named for the Mariner 9 orbiter, which discovered the canyon half a century ago. And geologists have been debating its origin ever since. They’ve wondered whether it was carved by water, ice, winds, volcanic activity, or some combination. Today, the leading view says it began as a crack in the crust. Over millions of years, a giant volcano near the eastern end of the canyon grew larger and larger. It became so heavy that it fractured the crust. The walls of that crack then collapsed, making it wider. The wind scoured out more of the landscape. And parts of the canyon may have been eroded by water or ice – giving Mars one of the grandest canyons in the solar system. And Mars is in grand view. It passed closest to Earth a few weeks ago, so it’s still pretty close. It looks like a bright orange star, high in the east at nightfall. Castor and Pollux, the twin stars of Gemini, line up to its left and lower left. Script by Damond Benningfield

So last week we went to the Opéra Garnier to see Castor et Pollux, a lyrical tragedy by Jean-Philippe Rameau, directed by Peter Sellars. I was afraid I wouldn't enjoy the show. But what did it turn out to be? That's what I tell you in this episode. In the notes that accompany the transcript, we're going to make a list of practical phrases for giving your opinion of a show, rather enthusiastically, and discover a range of formulations that may be useful to you in other circumstances too. Of course, there will also be photos of this unforgettable evening! So you'll discover, as I did, that the Opera is a place where you like to take your time, the Slow Way. A few months ago, Pietro and I were offered a ‘box', a gift box, to go to the Opera. We chose to go and see Jean-Philippe Rameau's lyrical tragedy Castor et Pollux, directed by Peter Sellars. The orchestra is the Utopia Ensemble, led by the Greek-Russian conductor Teodor Currentzis.   Before going to this exceptional evening, tomorrow Thursday 13 February, I did some research on the composer, but I also read some reviews of this new staging. I don't know if it was a good idea.  By the way, when I say ‘the opera', do I mean ‘the Opéra Garnier' in central Paris, built by Charles Garnier in the 19th century, or ‘the Opéra Bastille', inaugurated a hundred years later?  You'll find out in this episode.  The transcript is a very practical and effective tool for improving your understanding. It has a number of advantages, which I describe in detail on www.cultivateyourfrench.comThat's where you can subscribe to receive it and cultivate your French, the Slow Way.  This week, in the notes accompanying the transcript, you'll find a list of very natural expressions from this text and we'll be focusing on two words in particular with examples of their natural use in French.

Things are changing on Mars. The Red Planet is about half way through spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere. The switch triggers a kind of “see-saw” effect. As the north gets warmer, its polar ice cap gets smaller. And as the south gets colder, its ice cap gets bigger. That transition can cause the air pressure to vary by as much as a third across the entire planet. The ice caps are made mainly of frozen water. They’re up to a couple of miles thick. They’re marked by spiral patterns of deep valleys – perhaps carved by strong winds. A layer of dry ice forms atop each cap every autumn, and vanishes every spring. The carbon dioxide is pulled from the atmosphere, which is much thinner than Earth’s. So as the dry-ice cap moves from pole to pole, the atmospheric pressure changes by quite a bit. There’s disagreement about what lies below the southern ice cap. A few studies have suggested there could be liquid water – perhaps in a thin layer, or mixed with the dust and rock in the ground. But other studies say that liquid water couldn’t survive in the conditions below the ice at the south pole of Mars. Mars is in a crowded region of the sky tonight. It’s close to the upper right of the Moon at nightfall, and looks like a bright orange star. The true star Pollux is closer to the lower left of the Moon, with Castor, the other twin of Gemini, to their upper left. Script by Damond Benningfield

There’s a double burst of color in the sky right now. The planet Mars and the star Pollux stand side by side. They’re in the east at nightfall and soar high across the sky later on. Mars is by far the brighter of the two, with Pollux close to its left. Mars and Pollux both shine bright orange. But they achieve that color in different ways. Mars is a planet – a chunk of rock and metal about half the size of Earth. Much of its surface is coated with dust. It’s made mostly of iron oxide – it’s basically rust. And if you have any rusty iron pipes, you know it looks orange. That dust could be a problem for future Mars explorers. It’s so fine that it could get into machines and electronics. That could jam any moving parts, and short out the electronics. So mission planners will have to find ways to prevent astronauts from tracking the dust into their habitats. Pollux, on the other hand, is a star. And it’s an impressive one: It’s about twice as massive as the Sun, almost 10 times wider, and more than 30 times brighter. Pollux is so large because it’s burned through the original hydrogen fuel in its core. That’s made the core smaller and hotter. Radiation from the hotter core pushes on the surrounding layers of gas, making them puff up. As the gas expanded it got cooler. So the surface of Pollux is a couple of thousand degrees cooler than the Sun. At that temperature, the gas glows orange – a bit of color in the night sky. Script by Damond Benningfield

Mars is especially fetching this month. That’s because it lines up opposite the Sun on Thursday. It rises around sunset and remains in view all night. It’s also brightest for the year – it looks like a brilliant orange star. It shines as intensely as Sirius, the brightest true star in the night sky. Mars looks bright because it passes closest to Earth for the entire year today. It’s about 60 million miles away. That’s not an especially close opposition; at its best, Mars can approach to within about 35 million miles. But Mars’s orbit is lopsided, so the planet’s distance from both the Sun and Earth varies by tens of millions of miles. This time, we’re catching Mars near its farthest point, making this one of the planet’s fainter oppositions. But the view is enhanced by a couple of nearby stars: Pollux and Castor, the twins of Gemini. Pollux is closer to Mars, and the two of them will snuggle even more tightly over the coming nights. At their closest, they’ll be only about two degrees apart – the width of your finger held at arm’s length. Mars and Pollux have a similar color, but Pollux is only about one-tenth as bright as Mars. The Moon will heighten the drama tomorrow night. It’ll cross in front of Mars, blocking it from view. The disappearing act will be visible from the Lower 48 states. At most, Mars will remain out of view for a little more than an hour. We’ll have more about that tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

To the eye alone, the star Castor looks like a single pinpoint of light. It’s one of the “twins” of Gemini. But Castor takes the “twins” business to an extreme. Instead of a single star, it appears to be a system of six stars, consisting of three binaries – three sets of twins. The sets are known as Castor A, B, and C. The members of each pair are so close together that not even the biggest telescopes can see them as individual stars. Astronomers use special instruments to determine the details of each star. Castor A and Castor B each consist of a star that’s bigger, heavier, and brighter than the Sun, plus a small, faint companion. A and B orbit each other once every 450 years or so. Astronomers have been watching the two binaries for hundreds of years. That means they’ve seen enough of an orbit to know for sure that the two binaries are gravitationally bound to each other. Both of the stars of Castor C are small and faint. The system appears to orbit the other two binaries about every 14,000 years. But astronomers haven’t been watching Castor C as long as the others. So they still can’t be completely certain that Castor C is tied to the others – making one of the “twins” of Gemini a family of three sets of twins. Look for Gemini near the Moon at nightfall. Castor is to the left of the Moon, with brighter Pollux to the Moon’s lower left. Mars rises well below them, and we’ll talk about it tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

For '90s kids, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were the dominant force in twin fiction. Over the years, other generations have been fascinated by characters like Wrigley's Doublemint Twins, or Hayley Mills and Lindsay Lohan in the 1961 and 1998 versions of the film "The Parent Trap," respectively. Twins are rich narrative terrain and raise questions about individuality. "They're a natural kind of hook for a bunch of questions about human life in general," said Helena de Bres, a professor at Wellesley College and author of "How to Be Multiple: The Philosophy of Twins." Her identical twin, Julia de Bres, illustrated the book. Together, they explored the twin experience through a philosophical lens and examined free will, love, and personal identity. "I think people are fascinated because we're just kind of cute and unusual and trippy, but also because we raise these really big questions just by standing there," Helena de Bres said. Stories about twins go back to antiquity: Castor and Pollux, Romulus and Remus, and Hercules and Iphicles all represent binaries that describe human nature. "You can use twins narratively to explore a whole range of different contrasts, or different ways of living or being," Helena de Bres said. "So they're just really useful for getting at some of these questions. They're also easily used for comic purposes — you know, that whole switcheroo thing [of] twins switching places. Identity confusion is really ideal for theatrical treatments." Whether twins fit neatly into those binaries is a different story. Helena de Bres said she believes that twin binaries are a created to differentiate between children who people can't tell apart. "We're going to decide, maybe randomly, maybe on a little bit of a clue that this is the quiet one. And then the quiet one takes that up and starts acting into that role. And it is a self-fulfilling prophecy," she said. When astronomers compare the brightness of different stars, they use a scale known as absolute magnitude. That’s how bright the stars would look if they were lined up at the same distance: 10 parsecs, which is 32.6 light-years. One star they’d barely have to nudge is Pollux, the brightest star of Gemini. It’s only one light-year farther than that distance. So if it moved to exactly 10 parsecs, you’d have a hard time telling any difference in its appearance. That includes its color. Its orange glow tells us that its surface is thousands of degrees cooler than the surface of the Sun. Originally, Pollux would have shined almost pure white – an indication that its surface was much hotter than it is today. But the star used up the hydrogen fuel in its core. That triggered a series of changes that caused its outer layers to puff up to giant proportions. As the gas expanded, it cooled, making the star orange. Today, Pollux is the closest giant star to the Sun – a bit more than 10 parsecs away. Pollux is close to the Moon as they climb into good view by about 10 o’clock tonight. The moonlight will wash out some of the star’s color. Gemini’s other twin, the star Castor, will stand farther to the upper left of the Moon. They’ll be high in the sky at first light. By then, the Moon will line up half way between Pollux and an even brighter orange light: the planet Mars. We’ll have more about Mars and the Moon tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

Mars is much more arid than even the driest deserts on Earth. But that hasn’t always been the case. Rivers once flowed there, filling lakes and perhaps even a giant ocean. And the Perseverance rover is tooling along inside one of those ancient water features. It’s in a crater that once held a large lake, fed by a river that poured through the crater’s rim. Jezero Crater is about 30 miles wide. It formed when a giant asteroid slammed into Mars about four billion years ago. Perseverance has found evidence of long wet periods, with long dry periods between. The rover has revealed layers of sediments deposited by water over hundreds of millions of years. It’s also found minerals that formed in a watery environment. And it’s found big boulders that were carried by a massive river. The evidence shows that the first river flowed through Jezero a few hundred million years after the crater formed. Later, water filled the crater, forming a lake about 20 miles wide and maybe a hundred feet deep. And later still, a massive river punched through the crater’s rim. It deposited huge amounts of sediments, forming a large, thick delta. Eventually, though, the crater dried out – a dry remnant of a watery past. Look for Mars below the Moon as they climb into good view, after midnight. The planet looks like a bright orange star. You can tell whether a train or a police car is moving toward or away from you just by listening. Its horn or siren changes pitch – higher if it’s moving toward you, lower if it’s moving away. The same principle applies to the stars. Their light is shifted to longer or shorter wavelengths. Measuring that shift reveals the star’s motion – its “radial velocity.” An example is Pollux, the brightest star of Gemini. It’s close to the Moon at first light tomorrow. Its radial velocity tells us that the star is moving toward us at more than 7,000 miles per hour. That sounds fast. But at the star’s distance of almost 34 light-years, it would take millions of years to reach us. Pollux’s orbit is also carrying it sideways, so the star will never even get close. By measuring its radial velocity, astronomers at McDonald Observatory discovered a planet orbiting Pollux. As it orbits, the planet tugs at the star, changing its motion toward us by a few miles per hour. Precise measurements of that change revealed some details. The planet is a bit more than twice as massive as Jupiter, the giant of our own solar system. It’s a little farther from Pollux than Mars is from the Sun. And it orbits the star once every 19 months. Astronomers named the planet Thestias – a version of Leda, the mother of Pollux – a planet discovered by measuring a tiny shift in the star’s light. Script by Damond Benningfield

No matter which system you go by, the names of the two brightest stars of Gemini aren’t quite right. In mythology, the stars are named Pollux and Castor. They represent a pair of twin half-brothers. They had the same mother, but one had a mortal father, while the other was the son of Zeus, the king of the gods of Olympus. But the stars don’t look like twins. Pollux is almost twice as bright as Castor, and it looks orange, versus Castor’s pure white. They were called the twins mainly because they’re both bright, and they appear close together. The stars themselves aren’t physically related. And they’re nothing alike. Pollux consists of a single giant star, while Castor is a system of six stars. A second naming system is also off. In this system, Castor is Alpha Geminorum, while Pollux is Beta Geminorum. The naming system was devised by Johann Bayer. In a star atlas published in 1603, he assigned each star to a constellation. And he named the stars using the letters of the Greek alphabet. “Alpha” usually was applied to a constellation’s brightest light, and “Beta” to the second-brightest. But in Gemini, they’re reversed. No one is quite sure why that’s the case. No matter the reason, though, the names of the bright “twins” of Gemini are a bit off. The stars appear near the Moon early tomorrow. Pollux stands above the Moon at first light, with Castor a little farther to the upper left of the Moon. Script by Damond Benningfield
