For skywatchers in the United States, a grouping in the western evening sky right now is a case of the haves and the have-mores. The group is visible across the entire country. But the view gets better as you move farther south. The group features the planets Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury, and the stars Pollux and Castor – the “twins” of Gemini. Venus is the brightest member, with the twins to its right, and Jupiter and Mercury to its lower right. All five members of the group are near the ecliptic – the Sun’s path across the sky. And the angle of the ecliptic varies by latitude. As seen from the equator, the ecliptic stands almost straight up from the horizon at sunset. The Sun drops straight down below the horizon, so the sky darkens quickly. At the same time, Venus and the others stand fairly high above the horizon. They’re still well up as twilight fades. As you go farther north, the ecliptic tilts toward the south. The farther north you are, the greater that angle. So when the Sun sets, it doesn’t drop straight down – it also slides across the horizon. As a result, the sky remains bright for much longer than it does at the equator. Venus and the others are lower in the sky at sunset, so they’re more likely to be blocked by trees or mountains. And they’re immersed in the twilight longer. That leaves less time to enjoy this beautiful group of planets and stars in the evening sky. Script by Damond Benningfield

The twins of Gemini have a front-row seat for a planetary waltz this month. Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury are close to the twins now, and will bunch up even closer as the month progresses. The “twins” are the stars Pollux and Castor. They’re about a quarter of the way up the western sky as evening twilight fades. Pollux is the brighter of the two, with Castor to its right. Jupiter looks like a brilliant star to the lower left of the twins. It’s the largest planet in the solar system. But it’s on the far side of the Sun as seen from Earth, so it’s more than 550 million miles away – about six times the distance between Earth and the Sun. Venus is even brighter – the “evening star.” It’s below the twins. Although it’s a little smaller than Earth, it shines much brighter than Jupiter mainly because it’s much closer to both Earth and the Sun. Venus and Jupiter remain in view for a good while after darkness falls. That’s not the case for Mercury. It’s well to the lower right of the others, and much lower in the sky. It’s bright, though, so with a clear horizon, there’s a good chance to spot it. Mercury will move a little higher into the sky over the next few nights, improving the view. But the real action involves Jupiter and Venus. Venus is climbing away from the Sun quickly. It will nestle especially close to Jupiter on the 8th and 9th. It’ll pull away after that – all in close view of the twins. Script by Damond Benningfield

The Moon lines up with the twins of Gemini this evening – the stars Pollux and Castor. Pollux is the brighter twin, and is closer to the Moon. The brilliant planet Jupiter is to the lower right of the Moon. Gemini has been around for thousands of years. Its roots trace back to ancient Babylon, as do those of many other constellations. All of them were recorded in one of the most important works of astronomy in the ancient world. Known as the Almagest, it was written by Claudius Ptolemy around the year 150. Ptolemy studied many fields, including astronomy, astrology, geology, and music theory. The Almagest is perhaps his most famous work. In it, he recorded the positions of a thousand stars, and included details on the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets. He also discussed everything from eclipses to the length of the year. The book listed 48 constellations that were visible from northern skies – Gemini among them. The constellations weren’t given any borders – just the regions of the sky in which they appeared. And some barren regions weren’t part of any constellation. Over the centuries, astronomers shifted things around some. And they created constellations for southern skies as well. Finally, in 1930, they created an “official” list of 88 constellations. Each one was given precise borders. That gave every star a home – its own “address” in the universe. Only the magnetometer and plasma wave subsystem remain active. •       Engineers are developing 'the Big Bang' — a plan to swap older components with lower-power alternatives — to extend operations into the 2030s. Testing on Voyager 2 is planned for May/June 2026; Voyager 1 to follow no sooner than July. •       Source: NASA JPL — https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-shuts-off-instrument-on-voyager-1-to-keep-spacecraft-operating/   Story 2 — Curiosity Rover Finds Organic Molecules on Mars •       Published April 21 in Nature Communications, the study describes the first use of the TMAH chemical experiment on another planet. •       More than 20 organic molecules were detected in clay-rich sandstone from the Glen Torridon region of Gale Crater, preserved for over 3.5 billion years. •       Discoveries include a nitrogen-bearing molecule structurally similar to DNA precursors — never before confirmed on Mars — and benzothiophene. •       The experiment cannot determine whether molecules are biological, geological, or meteoritic in origin. Future missions including Rosalind Franklin and Dragonfly will build on the technique. •       Source: phys.org — https://phys.org/news/2026-04-mars-rover-compounds.html   Story 3 — Black Hole Jets in Cygnus X-1 •       Curtin University-led study published April 16 in Nature Astronomy directly measures the instantaneous power of black hole jets for the first time. •       The jets in the Cygnus X-1 system carry energy equivalent to 10,000 suns and travel at approximately half the speed of light (150,000 km/s). •       Researchers used the companion star's stellar winds to 'bend' the jets, allowing calculation of their real-time power — a technique compared to watching wind deflect a fountain. •       About 10% of the energy released as matter falls into the black hole is carried away by the jets — confirming a long-held theoretical assumption. •       The measurement will help calibrate future observations from the Square Kilometre Array Observatory, currently under construction in WA. •       Source: ScienceDaily — https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/04/260416071949.htm   Story 4 — SpaceX 600th Rocket Landing •       SpaceX completed its 600th successful Falcon booster landing on April 19, 2026, during the Starlink 17-22 mission from Vandenberg SFB. •       Booster B1097 landed on drone ship 'Of Course I Still Love You' for its eighth successful recovery. The milestone arrived just 7 months after the 500th landing. •       The tally includes 496 drone ship landings and 104 ground landings, per SpaceX VP Kiko Dontchev. •       SpaceX's Starlink constellation now numbers over 10,275 satellites in orbit. •       Source: Space.com — https://www.space.com/space-exploration/launches-spacecraft/spacex-starlink-17-22-b1097-vsfb-ofisly-600th-falcon-landing   Story 5 — Artemis Spacesuit Crisis •       NASA's Office of Inspector General report (released April 20) warns that next-generation Artemis spacesuits may not be ready until 2031 — three years after the stated 2028 target. •       The xEVAS programme began as a two-company competition (Axiom Space + Collins Aerospace). Collins has effectively been removed after missing milestones. Axiom is now the sole contractor for the lunar surface suit. •       OIG analysis: based on an 8.7-year historical average from contract award to first flight for comparable NASA programmes, Axiom's 2022 award points to a 2031 delivery. •       NASA Administrator Isaacman has publicly maintained confidence in the 2028 date. Axiom plans a suit demonstration in 2026 on the ISS or during an Artemis mission. •       A separate risk: if the ISS variant of the suit slips past 2030, the Station could run out of operational EVA suits before decommissioning. •       Additional Artemis delays: SpaceX lunar Starship at least 2 years late; Blue Origin Blue Moon at least 8 months late (per separate March OIG report). •       Source: SpaceDaily — https://spacedaily.com/sd-n-the-spacesuit-gap-why-artemis-iiis-2028-landing-date-is-already-slipping/   Story 6 — Skywatching: Moon & Jupiter Conjunction •       Tonight (April 22), the half moon sits approximately 3 degrees from Jupiter in the constellation Gemini, near the stars Castor and Pollux. •       Visible to the naked eye in the western/northwestern sky after sunset. Binoculars will reveal Jupiter's four Galilean moons. •       Southern Hemisphere viewers: look northwest after dark; viewing window narrows the further south you are. •       Source: Space.com — https://www.space.com/stargazing/the-moon-and-jupiter-steal-the-show-after-sunset-on-april-22Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/astronomy-daily-space-news-updates--5648921/support.Sponsor Details:Ensure your online privacy by using NordVPN. In the lexicon of astronomy, Pollux is known a class K-zero-3 star. That tells us that the star’s surface is a little cooler and redder than the Sun’s. It tells us that the star has puffed up to many times its original size. And it tells us that the star is nearing its end. Pollux is the brightest star of Gemini. It’s quite close to the Moon tonight. Its “twin,” the star Castor, and the brilliant planet Jupiter are a little farther from the Moon. The system that astronomers use to classify stars was developed more than a century ago. It groups the stars into classes O, B, A, F, G, K, and M. That system is based on a star’s surface temperature or color – hotter stars are bluer, while cooler stars are redder. O stars are blue-white, while M stars are red or orange. Each class is subdivided using the numbers zero through nine. At K-0, Pollux is just across the line from class G – the class that includes the Sun. The classification ends with the Roman numerals one through five. A “five” means the star is in the main phase of life. A “three” means it’s moved on to the giant phase. It’s converted the hydrogen in its core to helium. Pollux is now fusing the helium to make carbon and oxygen. That change has caused it to puff up; it’s nine times the diameter of the Sun. Over time, Pollux will get even bigger, cooler, and redder. It may evolve into class M – a brilliant star at the end of its life. Script by Damond Benningfield

You might forgive Pollux if it feels disrespected. It’s the brightest star of Gemini – twice as bright as Castor, its “twin.” But the designation that’s most often used by astronomers is Beta Geminorum. And the Greek letter “Beta” usually is applied to a constellation’s runner-up. That naming system was created by German astronomer Johann Bayer, in 1603. He used the Greek alphabet to name most of the stars in a constellation. Usually, the brightest star was given the first letter, Alpha. The next-brightest was Beta, and so on. But in some cases, Bayer switched things up. He labeled the stars based on their location in the constellation’s classical outline, or on some other category. So for Gemini, Pollux became the “Beta” star even though it’s clearly brighter than “Alpha.” Pollux really is an impressive star. It’s moved into the red-giant phase of life. In fact, it’s the closest red giant to the Sun, at a distance of just 34 light-years. It’s puffed up to about nine times the diameter of the Sun, so it shines almost 40 times brighter than the Sun. And it has a distinctively orange tint – a beautiful look for an impressive star. Pollux and Castor line up to the upper left of the Moon at nightfall this evening. Pollux is closer to the Moon. The planet Jupiter is farther to the upper right of the Moon. Jupiter outshines all the true stars in the night sky – even the brightest light of Gemini. Script by Damond Benningfield

If you head for orbit around Jupiter, you might want to take along your dust mop. Wide but thin rings encircle the planet. And they’re made of tiny particles of dust. Jupiter’s rings are nothing like the magnificent set that encircles Saturn. The rings are so faint, in fact, that they weren’t discovered until 1979, when the Voyager 1 spacecraft flew close to Jupiter. The system consists of four main rings. The inner ring, known as the halo, contains especially tiny particles, like a thin haze. The particles in the main ring are a little larger, but still quite small. And the two outer rings – known as gossamer rings – are wide and thick, but still don’t add up to much. The particles that make up the rings probably were chipped off of some the small moons that orbit close to Jupiter. Chunks of ice and rock slam into the moons, blasting out clouds of debris. The particles in the rings spiral into Jupiter quickly – within hundreds or thousands of years. So the rings are being constantly replenished by more impacts – adding to the dusty environment around the solar system’s largest planet. Jupiter teams up with the Moon and the twins of Gemini tonight. The planet looks like a brilliant star below the Moon at nightfall. It’s far brighter than any of the true stars. Gemini’s twins – the stars Castor and Pollux – line up to the lower left of the Moon. More about this beautiful grouping tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

The constellation Gemini consists of two long lines of stars capped by two of the brighter stars in the night sky. Many cultures have seen these stars as two men. But the legend that endures is the Greek story of Castor and Pollux. The two bright stars bear their names. In the story, the twins had the same mother – Leda, the queen of Sparta. But they had different fathers. Castor was the son of the king – a mortal – while Pollux was the son of Zeus, the king of the gods. The boys were inseparable. They had many adventures together. They joined Jason and the other Argonauts in the search for the golden fleece, and saved their legendary boat during a nasty storm. But during a later battle, Castor was killed. Pollux was inconsolable. He begged Zeus to let him die so he could join Castor in the underworld. Moved by Pollux’s love for his brother, Zeus agreed to keep them together for all time. They would spend half of their time in the heavens, and the other half in the underworld – just like the stars of Gemini. The twins appear near the Moon the next couple of nights. The Moon aligns along the body of the twins tonight. Castor, the fainter twin, is to the left of the Moon at nightfall, with Pollux to the lower left. The giant planet Jupiter is passing through the constellation as well. It looks like an especially brilliant star. Tonight, it’s a little closer to the Moon than the twins are. Jupiter Opposition IV

Earth passed by Jupiter yesterday. Now, we’re beginning to leave the giant planet behind. We’ll loop past it again early next year. That passage is known as opposition – Jupiter lines up opposite the Sun in our sky. It’s closest to us then, so it shines brightest for the year. And it’s in view all night. Jupiter is much farther from the Sun than Earth is, so it takes about 12 years to complete a single orbit. Earth follows a much shorter path around the Sun, and it moves faster. So it passes Jupiter every 13 months. As we approach Jupiter, the planet stops its normal eastward motion against the background of stars. For a while, it moves backward – a period known as retrograde. Jupiter itself doesn’t change direction. Instead, the shift is a result of our changing viewing angle. It’s like passing a car on the highway. For a little bit, the other car looks like it’s moving in reverse compared to the background of buildings and trees. As the gap opens, though, it appears to resume its forward motion. Jupiter will reach that point on March 11th – shifting gears as it circles the Sun. Jupiter looks like a brilliant star – brighter than any other planet or star in the night sky now. The twin stars of Gemini are close by. Pollux, the brighter twin, is close to the left of Jupiter at nightfall. Castor is farther to the upper left. The whole group soars high across the south during the night. The Moon sometimes rumbles during “moonquakes.” And according to a recent study in China, those quakes may happen fairly often. The first moonquakes were recorded by instruments left on the lunar surface by Apollo astronauts. Some of the quakes are deep – they’re centered hundreds of miles below the surface. They’re triggered by the tides – the gravitational pull of Earth squeezes and stretches the interior, causing things to clatter about. The other main moonquakes are shallow – they occur much closer to the surface. These quakes are triggered by the Moon itself. Our satellite world is shrinking as it loses its internal heat. It might have shrunk by as much as 150 feet over the past few hundred million years, and continues to contract even today. The Chinese study looked at 74 spots on the lunar surface, on both the nearside and farside. Scientists pored over hundreds of pictures snapped from 2009 to 2024. And they found 41 fresh landslides that happened during that period. They ruled out other causes for about 70 percent of the landslides. That left them with one conclusion: the landslides were caused by shallow moonquakes. So the Moon continues to shake and jiggle long after its birth. The Moon has some prominent companions tonight. It’s flanked by the brilliant planet Jupiter and the star Pollux, the brighter “twin” of Gemini. Castor, the other twin, is to the upper left of the Moon. Script by Damond Benningfield

A look at the evening sky is a nice way to wrap up your Christmas. It features the Moon, two bright planets, and some of the brighter stars in all the night sky. As twilight drains from the sky, the Moon is well up in the southwest. The Sun lights up more than a quarter of the lunar hemisphere that faces our way, so it’s a fat crescent. It’s waxing toward first quarter, on Saturday. The planet Saturn is to the upper left of the Moon, and looks like a bright star. It shines so brightly for a couple of reasons: It’s the second-largest planet in the solar system – more than nine times the diameter of Earth – and it’s topped by clouds that reflect much of the sunlight that strikes them. The only planet that’s bigger than Saturn is Jupiter, and it climbs into good view, in the east-northeast, by 7 or 7:30. In all the night sky right now, only the Moon outshines it. The “twin” stars of Gemini – Pollux and Castor – stand to Jupiter’s left and upper left. At the same time, the brilliant constellation Orion is off to the upper right of Jupiter. Look for its three-star belt aiming straight up from the horizon, flanked by orange Betelgeuse and blue-white Rigel. Taurus perches well above Orion. It’s marked by its bright orange eye, Aldebaran. And the Dog Star, Sirius, climbs into good view by 8 or 8:30, below Orion’s Belt. It’s the brightest true star in the night sky – a beautiful decoration for Christmas night. The Moon forms a beautiful grouping with the planet Jupiter and the twins of Gemini tonight. Jupiter looks like a brilliant star. It’s below the Moon as they climb into view, by about 8:30. Castor, the fainter of Gemini’s twins, is to the left of the Moon. And Pollux, the brighter twin, is to the lower left. The grouping is even tighter at first light tomorrow. The Moon circles through Gemini roughly once a month – the time it takes to complete one full turn through the background of stars. If you made a movie of those passages over the years, the Moon would look like a car that can’t stay in the same lane. That’s because the Moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted a bit compared to the ecliptic – the Sun’s path across the sky. So the Moon moves back and forth across the ecliptic during its month-long cycle. It moves from about five degrees north of it, to about five degrees south. The Moon’s position on the ecliptic relative to an individual constellation doesn’t change much from month to month. Instead, it takes years to see much of a difference. In the case of Gemini, that means that every few years the Moon comes especially close to Pollux. But then it moves away, and eventually leaves a big gap – up to the width of your fist held at arm’s length. But that won’t happen again until the early 2030s, as the Moon weaves into another lane. More about the Moon and Jupiter tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

Her Tolkien, Race and Cultural History won the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Inklings Studies and she co-edited the critical edition of A Secret Vice: Tolkien on Invented Languages which won the Tolkien Society Award for Best Book. Her Celtic Myth in Contemporary Children's Fantasy won the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award in Myth and Fantasy Studies. Other work includes co-editing Sub-creating Arda: World-building in J.R.R. Tolkien's Work, its Precursors and its Legacies and Imagining the Celtic Past in Modern Fantasy. She has contributed articles for the TLS and The Conversation, and has appeared on numerous radio and TV programs. When the rightly famous and beloved ‘The Great Courses' series decided to offer a Lord of the Rings entry for their catalog of the very best in scholarship for adult-learners, they asked Dimitra Fimi to create ‘The World of J. How does a woman born and raised on the Greek island of Salamis wind up in Cardiff studying Celtic Mythology?2. You're a Tolkien scholar and expert in fantasy and Children's literature. Tolkienistas are legend for looking down their Ent noses at Harry Potter, though there are important exceptions to that rule (the late Stratford Caldecott, his wife Leonie, Amy H. Sturgis, others). How did you meet the Boy Who Lived and what were your first impressions of Rowling as author?3. You have a lot in common with Rowling, no? Tolkien devotee, serious student of mythology, and a wonderful appreciation of the magic of story, especially magical stories for children. The Tolkien influence on Rowling is well documented though she has tried to belittle it, but her use of myths as templates for her stories is less well known but at least as important. What do you make of her admittedly “shameless” borrowing from folk tales and myths?4. I guess this is a segue to the Cormoran Strike books which are awash in myths -- Leda and the Swan, Castor and Pollux, Cupid and Psyche, Artemis and Tisiphone... Am I missing any?5. You've seen Rowling's recent confirmation of the Cupid and Psyche myth in her tweeted painting of ‘Psyche Ascendant.' That suggests we'll see the happy ending of the myth in Strikes 9 and 10. Or does it? What did you see of that myth specifically in Hallmarked Man?6. Running Grave has another embedded text, not a myth per se, one that makes sense in light of Rowling's love of everything the Bronte sisters wrote. Tell us what made you think of Jane Eyre as you were reading Strike 7.7. Rowling did something unusual in 2019, well, among the unusual things she did that year, in inviting readers to interpret her work in light of their ‘Lake' inspiration as well as her intentional ‘Shed' artistry. Writers like Lewis and Tolkien would be aghast at that, though Inkling Studies today necessarily include heavy biographical leanings in almost everything written about those authors. What is your take in general on what Lewis called ‘The Personal Heresy' and about Rowling as a living author inviting that critical perspective while she is still among us?8. It's fascinating, frankly, that you are not so compartmentalized in your reading that Rowling is still a writer you read outside of her fantasy and children's literature. Do you read the Strike-Ellacott stories because you also love a good detective novel or is it your interest in Rowling and whatever she is writing?9. Have you read Christmas Pig? John believes that in fifty years, the Lord tarrying, high school and college students will read Pig as Rowling's representative work the way we had to read Tale of Two Cities or Christmas Carol to be exposed to Dickens.10. John tries to read imaginative fiction through what he calls an “iconological lens,” a method born of his Perennialist beliefs and life as an Orthodox Christian. In what ways do you think your childhood and secondary education gave you a sympathy unusual for multi-valent texts than those born and raised in relatively secular cultures? The Moon shoots the gap between some bright companions tonight: the planet Jupiter and the star Pollux, the brighter “twin” of Gemini. They climb into good view by about 10:30 or 11, and stand high overhead at dawn tomorrow. Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, and it has the most turbulent atmosphere. Hurricane-like storms as big as continents twirl across it. Thunderstorms can produce lightning bolts far more powerful than any on Earth, as recorded by a passing spacecraft. And the storms might produce their own giant hailstones: “mushballs” as big as softballs. The idea was first proposed in 2020. And a study published earlier this year supports it. The study used observations by the Juno spacecraft, which is orbiting Jupiter, along with Hubble Space Telescope and a radio telescope on Earth The study says the mushballs may begin as droplets of frozen water far below the cloud deck. They get caught in updrafts that howl at 200 miles an hour. They’re carried to the tops of the clouds, which can be tens of miles thick. Along the way, the ice mixes with ammonia, forming a slushy liquid. When the balls get heavy enough, they begin to drop. As they descend, they’re coated with fresh ice, giving them a hard shell around a slushy middle – mushballs. The mushballs plunge hundreds of miles below the clouds, where they vaporize – “mushing” into the depths of the giant planet. Script by Damond Benningfield

11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island—it was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux. 12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days. 13 From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli. 14 There we found some brothers and sisters who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome. 15 The brothers and sisters there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these people Paul thanked God and was encouraged. 16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.

A bright star and planet team up with the Moon early tomorrow to form a tight, beautiful triangle. Pollux will stand close to the lower left of the Moon, with much brighter Jupiter about the same distance to the lower right of the Moon. Pollux is the brightest star of Gemini, while Jupiter is a planet. Jupiter is by far the giant of the solar system. It’s more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined. And it’s about 11 times the diameter of Earth. That makes it big enough to hold 1300 Earths. But a recent study says that Jupiter might have been much bigger during its infancy – about two or two-and-a-half times its current diameter. That would have made it big enough to hold thousands of Earths. Scientists came to that conclusion by studying the orbits of two of Jupiter’s small, close-in moons. The orbits are slightly tilted. Simulations showed that the moons were pushed into those orbits by the larger moon Io as it moved away from Jupiter. Those calculations revealed Jupiter’s original size and other details. Jupiter probably formed in just a few million years – much quicker than most of the other planets. By then, the supply of planet-making materials had dried up. So Jupiter’s gravity began squeezing it and making it spin faster. Eventually, the planet reached a point where it couldn’t shrink any farther – leaving the smaller but still-giant world we see today. Script by Damond Benningfield

Nick Jeffery and John Granger opened the Orthodox New Year with a conversation about, you guessed it, Rowling-Galbraith's Hallmarked Man. Both of them confessed that they were struggling with the most complex and carefully integrated novel in the author's oeuvre, with five different candidates for the body in the silver vault, a cast of characters for each candidate, all of them spun together with the Strike-Ellacott cum Murphy-Bijou ‘shipping madness as it unfolded. Neither of them was ready to talk about the book's structure in any detail. They chose instead to discuss the most obvious and most neglected of Rowling's Seven Shed tools, the signature writing elements she uses to craft the inspiration from her Lake springs and from her touchstone Golden Threads into the stories that fascinate her admirers around the world. That tool is her ‘Big Twist' finish, the surprise ending that shocks the reader caught in Rowling's narrative misdirection, the story clues sprinkled throughout a story to foster believing something that isn't true. Every Rowling reader knows this is what she is doing, but very few are conscious of the set-up until the narrative trap is sprung. One thing that readers can be looking for, consequently, are the ‘pushes' Rowling puts into her story to have us accept as facts that we have some reason based on textual evidence (and Tools, Springs, and Golden Threads) to think may not be true. Whence John's prediction post Running Grave that Robin was sterile. Whence Nick's theories that Charlotte was murdered and that Cormoran and Robin will forever be best mates, not husband and wife. The ‘pushes' in Hallmarked Man that John felt were positioning of a Strike-Ellacott reader for a judo move in Strike 9? There are five, three of which turn on paternity):* Per Ed Shardlow, that Murphy is not a good guy deserving of Robin's sympathy but a very bad man, in fact the man behind the gorilla mask (and if his surname has any mythological weight, the likely murderer of Castor and Pollux in Strike 10);* That “proper man,” Edward ‘Uncle Ted' Nancarrow, is Cormoran Strike's biological father consequent to an incestuous union with his much younger sister, Margaret (aka ‘Peggy,' aka ‘Leda Strike');* That Cormoran Strike is the biological father of Bijou Watkins, Esq.'s daughter, Ottolie, and that he was risibly reckless in his DNA testing for paternity;* That Jonny Rokeby was fooled by Peggy-Leda and Ted's management of his positive paternity test the way that Cormoran was hoodwinked by Bijou's sleight of hand with his negative result; and* Peggy-Leda told her older brother that she was going to tell Whittaker that Rokeby wasn't Cormoran's father, which led to her execution staged as a suicide. On to Week Three of Hallmarked Man! Next week we'll discuss Rowling's consolation tweet to Strike and Robin fans in “extreme trauma” from Strike 8's last chapter, a message that included a Cupid and Psyche painting, in addition to conversation about the importance (and difficulty!) of getting the surface story straight before diving beneath it Thank you for your support! The Quadrigal or ‘Reading at Four Levels' (John Granger, December 2021)The ‘Locked-Room Mystery' or ‘Impossible Crime' Subset of Detective Fiction (Wikipedia)Boris Akunin (Gregori Chkhartishvili) and the Erast Fandorin novels (Wikipedia)Who Killed Leda Strike? Early risers are in for a treat tomorrow. Venus, Jupiter, and the twins of Gemini congregate around the Moon. The group climbs into good view a couple of hours before dawn. Venus is close to the lower right of the Moon, Jupiter is farther to the upper right, and Gemini’s twins are to the upper left of the Moon. The brighter twin, Pollux, is especially close to our satellite world. Venus is the “morning star” – the brightest member of the group after the Moon. It shines so brightly because it’s close to Earth and the Sun, and because it’s topped by clouds of sulfuric acid. They reflect about three-quarters of the sunlight that strikes them. Jupiter is the next brightest – mainly because it’s the largest planet in the solar system. It’s about 11 times the diameter of Earth, and it’s more than twice as massive as all the other planets and moons put together. And Earth is moving closer to Jupiter now, so the planet will grow even brighter over the next few months. Pollux and Castor, the twins, are true stars. But they’re hundreds of thousands of times farther than the planets, which dulls their countenance. Even so, they’re easy to see through the moonlight – part of a beautiful panorama in the early morning sky. Another bright light rises well below the group: Mercury, the Sun’s closest planet. The Moon will stand close to it on Thursday, and we’ll talk about that tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

The Mars InSight lander has been silent for two and a half years. Yet the craft is still teaching us about the Red Planet. In particular, it’s revealing more about what killed it: dust and the fickle Martian winds. InSight landed in late 2018 and operated for four years. It listened for marsquakes, and monitored the weather. It even recorded the soft sigh of the winds. The wind lofts the dust that coats much of Mars high into the sky. The dust then settles back to the surface. That “settling” was a problem for InSight. The lander was powered by the Sun. But as dust fell on its solar panels, they generated less and less energy. Scientists hoped the wind would clear the dust away, but it didn’t. So by late 2022, with its solar panels coated with dust, InSight fell silent. Scientists still keep an eye on the craft through images from a Mars orbiter. The pictures show that dust has completely covered the solar panels, giving them the same reddish orange appearance as the surrounding landscape. And the area cleared away by the lander’s rocket blast has filled in with dust as well. That tells scientists more about the planet’s winds and dust – the “killers” of Mars InSight. Mars stands close to the lower right of the Moon at nightfall. Its dust gives the planet an orange tint. Pollux and Castor – the twins of Gemini – line up farther to the right of the Moon.
