“Praise the Lord!” This three-word exhortation begins and ends the last five psalms in the Psalter. Why is praise important, and how can we join the psalmist in praise, seeing the world as he also sees it? This sixth and concluding session of our study of the Psalms addresses these questions.

The prophet Zephaniah extends an urgent invitation to seek the Lord and only the Lord. At the time of Zephaniah's prophecy, even the priests in the house of the Lord were worshipping other gods. He predicts that a day of the Lord is approaching to eliminate those who rebel against Him, but in His grace, he will leave a meek and humble remnant. Later, in 2 Thessalonians, Paul writes to the church concerning how they should live in light of Christ's impending return. Rather than live idle lives, they are encouraged to work until that day comes, giving glory to God by loving each other well and committing themselves to faithful obedience.Zephaniah 1 – 1:09 . Zephaniah 2 – 5:02 . Zephaniah 3 – 8:47 . 2 Thessalonians 1 – 14:41 . 2 Thessalonians 2 – 16:55 . 2 Thessalonians 3 – 19:59 . Psalm 148 – 22:56 . :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by Bobby Brown, Katelyn Pridgen, Eric Williamson & the Christian Standard Biblefacebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

This song evokes praise with all our heart, soul and body ~ with all of creation, with all instruments, with all aspects of who we are. Indeed, praise includes what brings us pleasure, joy and delight ~ something we don't often sing about in hymns, and yet which are such an important aspect of living as fully and vibrantly as God intends. Set to the Scottish tune with Irish words, this paraphrase maintains some of the original language in the refrain of the song ‘Happy are We All Together.'Continue your reflections with the accompanying journal, which includes further questions for reflection and some invitations to prayer and practice.Paid subscribers receive a free journal PDF, or you can purchase a paperback versionVisit the Celtic Psalms website for scores/books, mp3s, CDs, and videos for May We RiseFind out more about the Habits for the Spirit course: an 8-week online course exploring habits and daily spiritual practices to promote wellbeing in body, mind, and spiritFollow Kiran's monthly reflections on Bless My FeetPsalms for the Spirit is a reader-supported publication. In our last episode, the Lord God turned away the messengers of King Sennacherib of Assyria and his armies, sending his angel to strike down 185,000 in their camp. Sometime during those days of the Assyrian threat, Hezekiah became terminally ill. After Isaiah prophesies that his illness will end in death, Hezekiah prays to the Lord and the Lord hears, granting him another 15 years of life. It's not long, however, before Hezekiah gets cocky and shows off his sweet digs to his neighbors, the Babylonians. Of course, we know that won't end well. Isaiah tells Hezekiah that some of his descendants will be taken captive to Babylon, but that matter much to Hezekiah; he's just glad it won't happen during his lifetime.Isaiah 38 - 1:10 . Isaiah 39 - 6:29 . 2 Kings 20 - 8:52 . 2 Chronicles 32:20 - 13:59 . Psalm 148 - 17:24 .  :::Christian Standard Bible translation. All music written and produced by John Burgess Ross.Co-produced by the Christian Standard Bible.facebook.com/commuterbibleinstagram.com/commuter_bibletwitter.com/CommuterPodpatreon.com/commuterbibleadmin@commuterbible.org

As the Psalter draws to a close with a grand Hallelujah Chorus, Psalm 148 calls upon all creation to join together to praise the LORD. The praise starts with the heavens and the heavenly creatures. These are not to be worshiped, but rather, they join together in worship to the Creator who continues to sustain them by His Word. The praise of the LORD continues on the earth among all earthly creatures, as they live according to the way He has made them to live. As the high and exalted one true God, the LORD acts in strength for the sake of salvation for all His people and all His creation. He has accomplished this through Jesus Christ.  Rev. Matt Ulmer, pastor at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church--Friedheim, just outside Decatur, IN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Psalm 148.  To learn more about Zion Lutheran, visit zionfriedheim.org. Join Sharper Iron this summer to study selected Psalms. In the Psalter, God speaks His Word to us and teaches us how to speak back to Him in prayer. Even in the great variety of the Psalms, each one points us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Carefully Examining the Text

Psalm 148“The whole creation, animate and inanimate, is called upon to praise God” Miller, 450. “The poem expressed a grand cosmic vision” Alter, 509. “This hymn of praise consists almost entirely of imperative calls to praise” Broyles, 515. “'Praise the LORD' occurs twelve times in Psalm 148” NICOT, 1002. “The psalm is naturally divined into two parts by the poetic structure. First, the summons goes out to praise the Lord from the heavens (vs. 1) and then from the earth (vs. 7). Next, in each section certain persons and things which inhabit the heavens (vss. 1b-4) and the earth (vss. 7b-12) are addressed in the second person and exhorted to praise God. Finally, in each section a partial refrain is uttered in the third person in which reasons for praising God are stated (vss. 5-6, 13-14). The psalmist moves from conscious (vs. 2) to unconscious (vss. 3-4) praise and then from unconscious (vss. 7b-10) to conscious praise (vss. 11-12)” Miller, 450. “This psalm rather regards worship as virtually inherent in the world's structures” NICOT, 1004. “Psalm 148 displays the typical structure of a song of praise- invitation to praise followed by reasons for praise” McCann, 1271.  1.     Hallelujah, praise Jehovah,From the heavens praise His name;Praise Jehovah in the highest,All His angels praise proclaim. All His hosts together praise Him,Sun, and moon, and stars on high;Praise Him, O ye heav'n of heavens,And ye floods above the sky.Refrain:Let them praises give Jehovah,For His name alone is high,And His glory is exalted,And His glory is exalted,And His glory is exalted,Far above the earth and sky. 2.     Let them praises give Jehovah,They were made at His command,Them forever He established; His decree shall ever stand. From the earth, oh, praise Jehovah,All ye floods, ye dragons all;Fire, and hail, and snow, and vapors,Stormy winds that hear His call.Refrain:Let them praises give Jehovah,For His name alone is high,And His glory is exalted,And His glory is exalted,And His glory is exalted,Far above the earth and sky 3.     All ye fruitful trees and cedars,All ye hills and mountains high,Creeping things, and beasts, and cattle,Birds that in the heavens fly.Kings of earth, and all ye people,Princes great, earth's judges all,Praise His name, young men and maidens,Aged men and children small.Refrain:Let them praises give Jehovah,For His name alone is high,And His glory is exalted,And His glory is exalted,And His glory is exalted,Far above the earth and skyJesus and Psalm 148“The intimate turn taken by the psalm at its close reminds the Christian of the progression from old song to new in Rev. 4:11; 5:9ff.” Laymen, 701. In Rev. 5:8-14 ever increasing numbers are praising the one on the throne and the Lamb. 148:2 The angels praise Him- Luke 2:13-14148:8 The stormy wind shows God's power and Jesus controlled the winds and waves- Matt. 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-41; Luke 8:22-25.All nature proclaims the identity of Jesus- Luke 19:39-40.148:11-12 Kings, princes, judges bowed before Him- Matt. 2:1-12.148:14 Kidner, 488, regards raising up a horn as a Messianic prophecy- Luke 1:69.

In this episode of the Sermon Brainwave podcast, Profs. Karoline Lewis, Matt Skinner, and Rolf Jacobson discuss the readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter, focusing on love, community, and the significance of the Farewell Discourse in the Gospel of John.  They explore how Jesus' command to love one another is foundational for discipleship and how this love is to be embodied within the community. The discussion also touches on the cultural barriers faced by early Christians, particularly in the context of Peter's encounter with Cornelius, and concludes with reflections on the themes of praise in Psalm 148 and the promise of a new heaven and earth in Revelation. Commentaries for the Fifth Sunday of Easter can be found on the Working Preacher website at https://www.workingpreacher.org/commentaries/revised-common-lectionary/fifth-sunday-of-easter-3/commentary-on-john-1331-35-6. ⏰Timecodes⏰ 00:00 The texts for Fifth Sunday of Easter 01:52 The Theme of Love in the Farewell Discourse 07:04 Community and Mutual Love 09:31 Peter's Vision and the Inclusion of Gentiles 15:09 God's Radical Shift in Fellowship 16:11 Praise and Creation in Psalm 148 18:14 Revelation: New Heaven and New Earth 20:20  Outro *  *  * Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share to stay connected with more insightful lectionary discussions!
