In Shakespeare's Sisters: Four Women Who Wrote the Renaissance (Knopf, 2024) by Dr. Ramie Targoff, discover the lives and work of four ambitious Renaissance women who, against all odds, made themselves heard-and read-in the time of Shakespeare In an innovative and engaging narrative of everyday life in Shakespeare's England, Dr. Targoff carries us from the sumptuous coronation of Queen Elizabeth in the mid-16th century into the private lives of four women writers working at a time when women were legally the property of men. Some readers may have heard of Mary Sidney, accomplished poet and sister of the famous Sir Philip Sidney, but few will have heard of Aemilia Lanyer, the first woman in the 17th century to publish a book of original poetry, which offered a feminist take on the crucifixion, or Elizabeth Cary, who published the first original play by a woman, about the plight of the Jewish princess Mariam. Then there was Anne Clifford, a lifelong diarist, who fought for decades against a patriarchy that tried to rob her of her land in one of England's most infamous inheritance battles. These women had husbands and children to care for and little support for their art, yet against all odds they defined themselves as writers, finding rooms of their own where doors had been shut for centuries. Dr. Targoff flings them open to uncover the treasures left by these extraordinary women; in the process, she helps us see the Renaissance in a fresh light, creating a richer understanding of history and offering a much-needed female perspective on life in Shakespeare's day. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Recently, we talked to novelist Jodi Picoult about her contention that many of the works commonly attributed to Shakespeare were actually written by a woman named Emilia Bassano (a.k.a. Aemilia Lanyer). But even as that compelling theory awaits definitive proof, we already know of several women - Shakespeare's contemporaries - who overcame obstacles and wrote their way through a male-dominated literary world. In this episode, Jacke talks to scholar Ramie Targoff (Shakespeare's Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance) about the women who defied the odds and defined themselves as writers at a time when women were legally the property of men. PLUS Jacke talks to Sarah Gristwood (Secret Voices: A Year of Women's Diaries) about her choice for the last book she will ever read. In A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf famously imagined what might have happened if Shakespeare had a sister who was as gifted a writer as he was. She invents “Judith” Shakespeare, and concludes that this female genius would have been doomed. But that's not the end of the story. If Woolf had read Mary Sidney, Aemelia Lanyer (nee Bassano), Anne Clifford, and Elizabeth Carey, she might have thought differently about the fate of her fictional Judith Shakespeare. Ramie Targoff's new book, Shakespeare's Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance, explores the lives and works of those four women.. Targoff tells us about them and reflects on why reading their work is so important. Ramie Targoff teaches English and Italian literature at Brandeis University. She's also a member of the Folger's Board of Governors. Her book Shakespeare's Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance is available from Knopf. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. Get inspired as you hear about a very special journey undertaken by a 90-year-old woman who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and advised to have surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. That woman, Norma Jean Bauerschmidt, said “no” to conventional cancer treatments and “yes” to a life on the road. Going with her on that road trip of a lifetime was her son, Tim, and his wife, Ramie, who've written about the experience in the book, "Driving Miss Norma". It's all about one family's journey saying "yes" to living. Check out their Facebook page, "Driving Miss Norma", at https://www.facebook.com/DrivingMissNorma/. You can learn more about Tim and Ramie's mission at their website, https://www.missnorma.com/.
