Grace Aki, a playwright and performer, joins Brian to talk about her one-woman show, To Free A Mockingbird. Here's the secret. Grace didn't actually “write” her one-woman show. Well she did. She talks about how she incrementally developed her show over a number of years, and how she used voice memos as her main tool to get material down. Grace and Brian talk about the lessons she learned from Rick Crom and Seth Barrish, how important the ending and the climax of a show (or a story, or a beat) is, the through line in all of Grace's work, and what the word storyteller means to her. Grace also gives fantastic advice on how to motivate yourself to do your own creative work. They also talk ice cream. Let's normalize meeting up for dessert the way people meet up for drinks! Over the last couple years, I’ve been in communication with Noam Dworman, the owner of the Comedy Cellar in New York, which is one of the most influential comedy clubs in the country. He suggested that we collaborate and put together a show that would explore the relationship between truth, free speech, and comedy. After a lot of back and forth, we came up with the idea of putting non-comedian intellectuals into conversation with professional stand-up comics. We weren’t quite sure what would happen, but we both sensed the idea had great potential. And so, last month, The Glenn Show held its first live event. Roland Fryer, Coleman Hughes, and I served as the “serious” participants, and Noam invited the comics Andrew Schulz, Judy Gold, Shane Gillis, T.J., and Rick Crom to come up and offer their thoughts. The event also included special appearances from Nikki Jax and the stellar Sam Jay. Noam and I wanted to know, are there certain truths that only comics can get away with telling? Can delivering a potentially unsettling idea in comedic form make people more receptive to it? The place was packed—tickets sold out in just a few days. The atmosphere was electric. After I introduced the event and kicked things off with an opening provocation, the show took on a life of its own. As you’ll see, the comics took the idea and ran with it. There are moments of chaos, moments of profundity, and a lot of laughs. I couldn’t have asked for a better live debut for TGS, and I am excited to be able to share with all of you who made it possible through your support. We’re planning on doing more of these events in the future, so let us know what you think! Many, many thanks to Noam Dworman for his hard work, generosity, and for providing video and audio of the event. The title sequence was created by our own Nikita Petrov. This post is free and available to the public. After a short break, Backstage Babble is BACK, and I am so proud to present my episode with the extraordinarily talented singer, actress, and comedian Christine Pedi. With a career spanning three Broadway shows, a daily radio show on Sirius XM, long-running stints off-Broadway in two hit parody shows, several York Theater revivals, appearances on quite a few hit TV shows, and an ever-growing cabaret career, how could she not have stories to tell? Tune in to hear her talk about how she surprised her parents with her role in Chicago, the Forbidden Broadway skit that she suggested, the magic of Alvin Colt, the advice Jerry Herman gave her, getting compliments from Helen Gurley Brown, imitating Suze Orman to Suze Orman, the logistics of putting together a radio show, how Act One affected her Father, and what she hopes everyone will have learned from Covid. Plus: Angela Lansbury, Gerard Alessandrini, Rick Crom, Fran Weissler, and more!
Buddy talks about letting life happen. The comedian/instructor was Rick Crom by the way.

This week we go down the rabbit hole with gonzo producer & comedian Dustin Sussman to discuss his 15+ years adventuring through the entertainment industry and what eventually lead him back home to Pittsburgh. Dustin and I talk about moving all over and eventually making LA home base for more than a decade. We talk about him working at The Château Marmont and all his wild interactions with celebrities like Jerry & Anne Stiller, and even the great Hunter S. Thompson. Dustin then talks me through how he ended up in New York City where he pursued his comedy career and eventually directed and produced a documentary highlighting longtime Comedy Cellar comedian, Rick Crom. Dustin has one of the most insane stories I’ve heard yet. I probably wouldn’t have believed half the shit he told me if he didn’t have pictures to prove it. This episode is wild. Saluton, estas mi, Tyson Saner welcoming you to Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. The podcast that dares to call itself a soundcast that features clips from other soundcasts...allegedly of the comedic variety...sometimes merely comedy-adjacent. That is to say, if you have a soundcast and it can be considered a comedy related soundcast I may have listened to it, I may have already clipped it...former-host-now-executive producer Marc Hershon may have clipped it...or I have yet to hear it. And when I do hear it, I will probably clip it and feature it here on Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast" because that's what this soundcast is all about. You want clips? We've got clips. This epi features content from: Awards Chatter, Broad Topix, Just Joshin', Entry Level with Brooks Wheelan, About Last Night and Come To Papa. But wait - there's more! In addition to clips, we've got our Burst O' Durst segment with political wag and social gadfly Will Durst which is opening our show this time around and another reading from our still-pretty-new sponsor TrumPoetry.com... DAS CLIPS Awards Chatter Moderated by The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg, Awards Chatter features in-depth interviews with the most interesting and accomplished people in show business. His guest back on May 7th of this year, which this epi dropped was Samantha Bee, the host of TBS' Full Frontal. Our clip features her talking about the chronology of former host of Comedy Central's The Daily Show Jon Stewart's departure, and the beginning of her own show. Entry Level with Brooks Wheelan This is a podcast about all those jobs we've had that sucked. Each episode host Brooks Whelan interviews a guest to find out what garbage they had to put up before they got to the position they're in now. John Roy, winner of Star Search in 2003, was Brooks' guest back in April of this year, talking about his run of bad managers. About Last Night We've clipped About Last Night on Succotash before but it's always fun to hear what hosts and comedians Brad Williams and Adam Ray are up to — as it says on the iTunes description: "From sex, to sports, to booze, when a dwarf and a Jew come together the results are unpredictable but always entertaining." Their guest in July was the great Bill Burr, who covered a gamut of topics - being a parent, bullying, high school days, and more. Our clip shaves off a slice of that action for you… Broad TopixHosts Kim Congdon and Alex Scarlato use their soundcast Broad Topix as a platform to cover everything from near-death experiences to naming their vaginas. We clip from an episode released just this month, where the hosts recount their adventure-filled trip to Vegas, baby! Savage Henry Magazine Radio NetworkAfter a mighty long slumber, hosts Chris Durant and Daniel Amaral welcome the rebirth of the Savage Henry Magazine Radio Program, a new special producer and ringleader, Michelle Meyers, as well as a the show debut of guest Just Joshiní. Host of Just Joshiní, Joshua Barnes is joined by studio hosts, Evan Vest and Matt Redbeard. Our clip features conversation about host Josh Barnes's recently discovered appreciation for Fleetwood Mac. Come To PapaA positive podcast from stand-up comedian/actor/writer/bread maker/friend to all Tom Papa. This clip is about a special promotion during a live epi of the show from July featuring guests Judy Gold, Robert Kelly, Colin Quinn, Keith Robinson, Dave Hill, Bonnie McFarlane, Olivia Vessel, and Rick Crom. And just like that...the show is near over. I close another chapter of the audiobook that is Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. It's time to sweep up the eyeballs...oh wait I used that one already...didn't I? Ugh I...I can't remember...a wiki for the show would be so handy as a reference tool ...sadly the rules of Wikipedia wouldn't allow me to do it myself...as far as I know...I don't understand how Wikipedia works really...is there a Vox video? I'll look it up after I get done here. Thank you so much for joining me whenever you are listening. If you like us here at Succotash and you'd like to help us out, it would be great if you could write a review on iTunes or anywhere they let you write reviews really...online that is...well, you know what? I'm cool with print media... Also there is "Succomerch" available at our Succotashery (https://www.cafepress.com/succotashshow) and I imagine that's another great way to show us love by showing off your love of us to others...sharing us with others...loving us together...It's a huge and wonderful favor you'd be doing us, being our mascot of sorts...sharing images of yourself on social media with our shirts on...being featured on our Social Media sites...that sort of modern reciprocal love that is just another fantastic way that you could ...if you were to be so inclined to make a fashion statement AND (Please) Pass the Succotash... — Tyson Saner

Part 2 of my conversation with actor/comedian/songwriter Rick Crom! Perhaps best known as Louis CK's gay poker buddy on the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award winning show Louie on FX, he's also been seen on Chappelle's Show, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and Caroline's Comedy Hour. As a comedian, he's a regular at The Comedy Cellar in New York and has performed in clubs throughout the country. As an actor, Rick has appeared on Broadway in The Goodbye Girl (with Martin Short and Bernadette Peters), Footloose, and Urinetown. As a songwriter, Rick wrote the book, music and lyrics for Newsicle, a musical that lampoons current events, celebrities and trends which has been running Off-Broadway since 2009, and has earned him several Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Lyrics. Newsicle is currently enjoying an open-ended run at The Kirk at Theatre Row. In Part 2 of our conversation, Rick continues to makes me laugh A LOT. Plus, he talks about his television work, including the origin of his famous poker scene on Louie, the effect that scene continues to have; the reason he waited so long to come out publicly, and why being a comedian is so therapeutic.

He also does impressions of Kirk Douglas, Don Pardo and a gay John Wayne that you don't wanna miss. Tune in.
