I first heard about Colin through a former guest who was deeply moved by an article he had written. Her words piqued my curiosity, and when I finally read Colin's piece, I immediately understood why—it was powerful, honest, and deeply human. We later crossed paths through mutual colleagues, and it became clear that we shared not just a passion for helping others navigate grief, but also the personal experience of child loss. That shared bond drew me to connect with him more personally, and I knew I wanted to invite him onto the podcast. Colin brings a heartfelt and courageous voice to conversations around grief, and I'm honoured to have him here today to share his story, insights, and the wisdom he's gained on his journey through unimaginable loss.About this week's guestColin Campbell is a writer and director for theatre and film. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Seraglio, a short film he wrote and directed with his lovely and talented wife, Gail Lerner. He has taught Theatre and/or Filmmaking at Chapman University, Loyola Marymount University, Cal Poly Pomona University, and to incarcerated youth. His book, Finding the Words: Working Through Profound Loss with Hope and Purpose, was published by Penguin Random House in 2023. What happens when history, activism, and theater collide? The producers of The Return of Benjamin Lay break it down. What happens when a story refuses to be forgotten? Comedian JOEY CAMEN originally from the streets of DETROIT makes his way from LA to NYC! Here is what he said...."A big thanks to United Solo for having the NYC world premiere of my new seriocomic one-man play Laughing Through the Pain on Nov 9th at Theatre Row! Here's a promo trailer to give you a little preview. Enjoy. Get your tickets @https://festival.unitedsolo.org/show/1722894607414x392580299845533700https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOJRONMPbLMShow SummaryLaughing Through the Pain: My Journey from Detroit to Hollywood Standup Comedy and Beyond is a thought provoking one-man play based on the autobiography of standup comedian, voice actor and author Joey Camen. It's the story of a young Jewish boy growing up in Black neighborhoods in Detroit in the 1960s, making his way into the world of Hollywood standup comedy in the 1970s and working as an actor and voiceover talent. This insightful seriocomedy delves into Joey's not so pleasant home life with an abusive father, his leaving home at 17 and becoming one of the youngest professional standup comedians at the World Famous Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip. Naturally funny, he finds himself working with comedians Richard Pryor, Paul Mooney and others. Joey's story is also a tale of childhood survival, ups and downs, laughter and pain, engagingly written and performed by someone who has spent decades in the world of entertainment.

What is it like to develop a story through dialogue, how do you get your work on the stage, and where does inspiration itself come from? These questions and many more are explored as Odin and Rachel sit down for a deep dive into the world of writing for the stage and the page. Rachel's play, "Little Egg, Big World" premiered Off Broadway at Theatre Row on June 24th, 2022. An autofiction piece about growing up as a sperm donor child and then becoming an adult egg donor. Co-Produced with BBTF. Rachel Leighson is an actress/singer/writer hailing from Los Angeles, CA. She literally fell into performing at the age of seven when she nearly spun off stage during the tornado dance in The Wizard of Oz and never looked back. In Los Angeles, she performed with the Los Angeles Opera in Noye's Fludde, Judas Maccabaeus, and Friedl under Maestro James Conlon. She then attended Oberlin College and Conservatory and Vancouver Film School for Acting in Film and Television. Rachel has performed all over the United States (38 states and counting!) and in NYC at Carnegie Hall, Playwrights Horizons, St. Luke's Theatre, and The Actor's Temple Theatre. Her acting and writing passions center around moralistically grey women and finding the nuanced perspective in a piece or character. She believes theatre gives people a safe opportunity to explore uncomfortable truths and grow, and that is the base of everything she wants to do. Rachel is a donor child with two moms, too many cats, too many half-siblings, and too many opinions. She wouldn't have it any other wacky way. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/roundtablewriters/support

She is a polymath who has been singing, writing, acting and performing since college. Is she the most famous? No. Has she made it to Broadway? Well, yes, but most of her career has not been there. Has she built a family and a body of art that she is immensely and justifiably proud of? Absolutely. Take a listen. Here is a link to Joanne's website: http://joannesydneylessner.com/ Here is her bio: Joanne Sydney Lessner is a writer, singer, and actor. Joanne's debut novel Pandora's Bottle was inspired by the true story of the world's most expensive bottle of wine and named one of the top five books of 2010 by Paperback Dolls. Joanne has written the book and lyrics to several musicals with her husband, composer/conductor Joshua Rosenblum, including the cult hit Fermat's Last Tango, which received its Off-Broadway premiere at the York Theatre Company. The original cast recording became a bestseller, and the DVD has been screened at festivals from New Jersey to New Zealand. The Teatro da Trindade in Lisbon, Portugal, presented the European premiere and subsequently gave the world premiere of their next musical, Einstein's Dreams, based on the celebrated novel by Alan Lightman. Their musical Garbo and Me was presented in concert at the York Theatre Company and the historic Paramount Theatre in Rutland, Vermont, while their adaptation of Wilkie Collins's The Haunted Hotel was unveiled at the Signature Theatre Company in Arlington, Virginia. Their musical revue Love is Not a Science was presented at London's Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, where they will return with a musical based on Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman's classic play, Stage Door. Joanne's play, Critical Mass, received its New York premiere at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row as winner of the Heiress Productions Playwriting Competition. One of the world's most impactful minds is battling Alzheimers. The beautiful B. Smith. Her husband decided to move in his girlfriend. Is she really there to help or to capitalize on B. Smith's fortune? Is her husband trying to live some sort of fantasy? Would B. Smith consent to this if she was in her right mind? Local Atlanta Business Owner Hahna shares insight on the matter. What do you think about the situation? Website: www.bsmith.com About B. Smith: Restaurateur, magazine publisher, celebrity chef, and nationally known lifestyle maven, B. Smith now has a tag she never expected to add to that string: Alzheimer's patient. She has been heralded by The New York Times as “a Renaissance woman,” by television anchor Chuck Scarborough as a “domestic goddess,” by The New York Daily News as “one of the most important African-American style mavens of all time,” and honored with a 2012 Silver Spoon Award for sterling performance by Food Arts. A broadcast talent, entrepreneurial spokesperson and multiple award-winning recipient across a wide range of fields, Smith also earned kudos when she returned to the stage in her Off-Broadway debut in “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” the award-winning play by Nora and Delia Ephron. In 2012, Smith was inducted into the American Chef Corps, part of the U.S. Department of State's newly-formed Diplomatic Culinary Partnership with the James Beard Foundation. Until recently, she ran three B. Smith restaurants: on Theatre Row in Manhattan; Sag Harbor, NY; and Washington DC. But then her life changed. In 2013, at the age of 64, B. Smith was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Since then, she and her husband Dan Gasby have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of the disease and its effects on the African-American community in particular. Their book, Before I Forget, interweaves their narrative with practical and helpful advice. Part 2 of my conversation with actor/comedian/songwriter Rick Crom! Perhaps best known as Louis CK's gay poker buddy on the critically acclaimed, Emmy Award winning show Louie on FX, he's also been seen on Chappelle's Show, Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn and Caroline's Comedy Hour. As a comedian, he's a regular at The Comedy Cellar in New York and has performed in clubs throughout the country. As an actor, Rick has appeared on Broadway in The Goodbye Girl (with Martin Short and Bernadette Peters), Footloose, and Urinetown. As a songwriter, Rick wrote the book, music and lyrics for Newsicle, a musical that lampoons current events, celebrities and trends which has been running Off-Broadway since 2009, and has earned him several Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Lyrics. Newsicle is currently enjoying an open-ended run at The Kirk at Theatre Row. In Part 2 of our conversation, Rick continues to makes me laugh A LOT. Plus, he talks about his television work, including the origin of his famous poker scene on Louie, the effect that scene continues to have; the reason he waited so long to come out publicly, and why being a comedian is so therapeutic.

She wrote a one-act play, a graphic novel, started her autobiography, and accomplished her biggest dream to date, which was to tell her story in the medium she's always loved best – the theatre.
