Uma desoladora mistificação do nosso tempo opera-se pelo colapso da responsabilidade, como um processo de recitação em que o ser se expurgasse daquela impiedade no juízo que faz de si mesmo, deixando de reconhecer como a consciência só alcança um limiar sagrado no momento em que cada um de nós admite que o “sermos responsáveis pelos nossos actos até ao fim dos tempos é o verdadeiro juízo final com que temos de nos confrontar” (Steiner). Suponha-se, então, que nos seria possível construir uma excepção que revertesse aquele sentido de responsabilidade absoluta de que falava Dostoievski em Os Irmãos Karamazov (“Todos somos culpados de tudo, culpados por todos diante de todos, eu mais do que os outros.”), construindo-se um efeito de expiação automática de qualquer pecado, em que a culpa não implica já que nos refaçamos dos nossos erros, mas que estes sejam atribuídos ao regime de dissociação geral em curso. Podemos hoje reconhecer como se tem procedido a uma espécie de morbidez da projecção, em que, por um lado, os homens entram num transe, num confessionalismo constante das suas fraquezas, exprimindo aquele desgosto por si mesmos que parte então em busca de causas mais gerais, por outro, tornando-se especialistas em narrar a sua queda, superam assim qualquer transtorno e retiram até um gozo perverso de se verem a actuar como possuídos, como se o próprio céu não passasse de uma ficção infernal, um modo de antecipar a culpa, justificar-se enquanto se encarna os piores defeitos que se poderia reconhecer de fora, sendo este o supremo gozo estético. Seria uma forma de dispor intimamente dessa intuição que guiou Benjamin ao reconhecer como a humanidade, que antigamente, com Homero, foi objecto de contemplação para os deuses olímpicos, veio a tornar-se objecto de contemplação para si própria, e até de forma cada vez mais obsessiva. Ele notava que a alienação de si própria atingiu tal grau que lhe permite viver a sua própria aniquilação como um prazer estético de primeira ordem. De algum modo isto explica como cada um tomou a seu cargo esse movimento de queda para lá de qualquer possibilidade de redenção, em que os seres se deliciam com a possibilidade de enfrentar o juízo final com uma insolência desmedida, com tal desdém pela realidade, que os seus gestos estariam consagrados à produção e reprodução da destruição do mundo, apreciando essa simetria entre a sua devastação íntima e a degradação sucessiva dos planos exteriores, como se o Antropoceno fosse uma projecção de ordem quase libidinal, uma forma de reclamar, pela posse violenta, toda a vida e todo o espaço, revirá-los, cometer contra eles o acto mais infame, realizando assim as nossas fantasias despóticas. E isto porque chegamos a um tal estado de amputação sensível que não conseguimos retirar verdadeiro gozo de uma relação de proximidade e de dependência dos elementos, de tudo aquilo que revelava a nossa fragilidade intrínseca, essa ânsia de ligação. “Compreendo que Nietzsche tenha perdido os sentidos ao ver espancar um cavalo”, diz Steiner. “Trazemos a condenação dentro de nós. Caso contrário, porque teríamos destruído o planeta?” Talvez tenhamos encontrado um meio de vingar-nos da morte, sendo certo que todo o anseio e o terror que esta nos provoca é o resultado de vidas que não sabem cumprir-se. Assim, produz-se esse golpe desesperado que faz do mundo um imenso cadáver de modo a ser-nos mais fácil passar por cima dele, fazer da nossa morte um triunfo. Conseguimos reconhecer esta forma de buscar a própria catarse no lixo, a forma depravada de encontrar esse corpo que corresponde inteiramente aos nossos excessos, à dedicação de todas essas descargas ofensivas, não sendo já possível a ninguém escapar a esta encarnação doentia. Os nossos actos ganhariam assim esse prestígio do horror, como se participassem de uma profecia obscena, traduzindo esse horizonte cor de carne, como as costas de um moribundo… “Demos graças pela nossa violência, disse ele, mesmo que ela seja estéril/ como um fantasma, embora não nos leve a lado nenhum,/ porque estes caminhos não levam a lugar algum” (Bolaño). O lixo torna-se a condição necessário de toda a lógica de acumulação, e acaba por representar a verdadeira herança e o próprio destino que melhor exprime os anseios de um ser que adoptou nas suas rotinas um princípio de indiferença face aos efeitos que produz, sentindo-se desalojado da própria mente, desalojado daquele sonho que antes nos aproximava, sendo que agora todos os sonhos implicam a degradação dos outros, e até quando tenta transmitir aquilo que deseja, só é capaz de produzir um discurso em que todas as palavras se tornam medonhas. “E viajava de um lugar a outro/ dos sonhos/ qual verme da terra/ arrastando o seu desespero/ comendo-o”… Ninguém estranha assim toda esta raiva, e alguns põem-se a fantasiar com um suicídio planetário, sendo hoje mais fácil imaginar o fim do mundo do que a possibilidade deste mundo prosseguir sem eles, com a frieza com que hoje nos despedimos seja de quem for. A destruição do planeta torna-se assim uma espécie de ilustração do estupor de um ser que faz a escolha de transformar o ultraje dos anos, a consciência do fim. É como se os vivos já não pudessem senão acreditar nessa cumplicidade que liga aqueles que estão obcecados com a sua morte, esses que conspiram para dar a morte à morte. Só que, como nos faz ver Michael Marder, “a morte da morte deteriora fatalmente a vida”, e, assim, “os restos descarregados no vazadouro das nossas loucas aspirações à incorruptilidade, à preservação estática, acabando por interferir nos estreitos parâmetros da vitalidade. Perecemos devido aos nossos anseios de imortalidade perversamente realizados e arrastamos connosco grande parte da biosfera.” A vida que se serve como esse deplorável espectáculo entrou numa decomposição angustiante há algumas décadas, e isto dá-nos uma sensação de ver realizar-se o projecto de um mundo submetido a um contágio em que vemos os mortos continuar entre os vivos. “Custa-lhes mudar os costumes, renunciar ao tabaco, ao prestígio de violadores de mulheres”, lê-se em A invenção de Morel. E se até certa altura a humanidade odiava aqueles seres que se dispunham a ter uma relação virada para o livro, o pensamento e a ética, e que lhe lembravam de que esta não era ainda verdadeiramente humana, se Steiner diz que essa era a verdadeira fonte de todo o ódio contra o judeu, esse que nos vinha exigir uma coisa que sabemos ser justa, mas que nos obrigava a dominar os nossos impulso e desejos, a certa altura, parece que a humanidade quis libertar-se dessas aspirações, e ela mesma realizou-se através de uma imortalidade pútrida, esta lixeira que significa a produção de uma realidade alinhada com o niilismo que por fim nos desobriga de qualquer obrigação moral para com este mundo. Neste episódio, Marder, que acaba de ver publicado entre nós Filosofia no Lixo – Uma Fenomenologia da Devastação, com selo da VS, veio orientar-nos neste confronto com esse monturo crescente de resíduos que sufoca, fende e diminui as regiões habitáveis do planeta, ao mesmo tempo que penetra a própria fibra do ser e exprime materialmente essa fantasia metafísica da economia capitalista que no seu crescimento monstruoso e sem trégua produziu um pesadelo de que não parece haver saída.

Tudo o que disser aqui pode ser usado contra si. E não é assim, e cada vez mais, em toda a parte? Parece que temos alguma coisa contra a vida. Por princípio, e contrariamente ao que se diz. Só isso explica a falta de ar, a falta de vidas absurdas. No seu estado de demência mais benigna, percebe-se como o mundo cedeu a uma imensa nostalgia do passado. Ninguém saberia, contudo, situá-lo. Na verdade, são doenças da nossa falta de memória. Os delírios de uns débeis. Mas vez por outra lá se cruza connosco um desses seres descarrilados, vendendo beijos com sabor a cerveja, contrariando a ideia de que tudo só se passa muito longe, no cu do mundo. Ainda antes de isso ser tido como um acto político, era vista com o batom a transbordar sempre um pouco dos lábios. O desastre torna-se sugestivo a partir de certa altura, e há quem se apegue a ele, desenvolva por esses sinais uma estima imensa. A realidade, no fundo, interessa-nos muito pouco. Só a partir do momento em que alguém se dispõe a recuperar velhas cassetes, as gravações soluçantes, ficando buracos que é preciso compensar. Uma canção que toca ao longe e que quase se deixa reconhecer, e também a partir de frases cortadas uma linguagem que nos parece desconhecida, feita de réplicas oferecidas em lugares esquecidos. É preferível quando alguém só conhece uma versão parcial, e faz dela o seu todo. Não se põe a investigar todas as circunstâncias, porque a partir de certa altura a enxurrada dos acontecimentos devasta qualquer possibilidade de segurar uma narrativa mais firme. «Não ser amada é um acto de terror», disse ela. Só ter para mostrar a quem a visita naquele quartinho infecto «um coração cheio de moscas negras». E, nas paredes, balouçando, «um alfabeto de más experiências.» É o de sempre: histórias gaguejantes, overdoses, comprimidos para dormir, os bibelôs para compor uma solidão de deserto, e a clara sensação de que tudo caminha para o seu fim. São as impressões o que respira no meio dos relatos. Todos sabemos secretamente que as histórias estão mortas há muito. Hoje, só nos sonhos não nos sentimos ali despejados, desfeitos. Só nos sonhos, as impossibilidades não se apresentam como impossibilidades. Michael Marder diz-nos que após a segunda morte de Deus, convencionalmente chamada secularização, o vazadouro global incita à expiação do ser através da massa em energia, potencialidade pura, inflamável e explosiva. «A existência é tolerada desde que nada permaneça quieto, os seres não se detenham no interior dos seus limites próprios e o próprio ser acelere a caminho do nada.» Por isso prefiro ler como quem tem a sensação de ouvir alguém perdido num transe, como Sara Stridsberg a recolher os sinais da passagem de Valerie Solanas por este mundo. Falar-nos daquele quarto do Hotel Bristol, em abril de 1988, daquela cama que «é um deserto em chamas de tudo o que não fizeste e de tudo o que fizeste mal, profunda como dez mil braças de água de oceanos de tudo o que esqueceste e de todas as vezes que te esqueceste de dizer adeus.» Morreu ali, aos 52 anos, como uma personagem de quem se dizia que não tinha os parafusos todos. Mais um nome a juntar a uma lista, que poderia seguir assim: Valerie. Marilyn. Roslyn. Ulrike. Sylvia. Há tantos narradores empenhados em chegar ao fundo da verdade, apenas para descobrirem que à medida que se aproximam as frases se tornam vazias, tomadas de uma irresolução, de uma fundamental inépcia retórica. Por isso, as histórias são só uma força de atiçar, manter a tensão, para levar as pessoas a confiarem naquilo que já viveram e sabem. Assim sendo, que importa que o narrador exagere ou minta? Que importa saber quem é o narrador? Cada um está entregue ao que viveu já e a partir disso está disposto a imaginar. «A tua memória é um passador», diz uma delas. Todos se esfalfam por abordar um material genuíno, mas acaba por valer mais essa voz capaz de demorar-se até ficar com os pensamentos encardidos, a roupa suja, revelar as suas sujas intenções, a sua baixeza. No fundo, para que alguma coisa sobreviva a este mundo precisa ser arrancada às suas circunstâncias, aquilo que fica na memória dos que registam apenas os contornos mais frios, essa cultura geral da indiferença. Solanas ficou conhecida apenas como mais outra histérica, a feminista radical que, nos anos sessenta, disparou três tiros sobre Andy Warhol, depois de ter participado num dos seus filmes. Os dois primeiros tiros falharam o alvo, mas o terceiro perfurou-lhe o esófago, o estômago, o baço, o fígado e os pulmões. Um ano após o atentado, que a levou a ser internada com um diagnóstico de esquizofrenia, Warhol posou para uma fotografia com a camisa arregaçada, exibindo as marcas das cirurgias. Aquelas cicatrizes deram-lhe a gravidade que lhe permitiam afastar-se da figura de um patético cadáver disponível a tudo para somar mais uns minutos. Havia ali um certo triunfo, uma dimensão insinuante e provocatória. «Vemos Warhol a assimilar o facto da sua própria morte, a processá-lo com a mesma ligeireza inquisitiva e penetrante que animava o resto da sua obra. Se Solanas está presente na fotografia, é apenas sob a forma de um ponto de interrogação, objecto do olhar perplexo de Warhol», registou um artigo numa revista middlebrow, como eles dizem. «Ele tinha controlo excessivo sobre a minha vida», terá dito Solanas ao polícia a quem se entregou, como explicação para o ataque. Se não morreu dos ferimentos provocados pelos disparos, as cirurgias subsequentes a que Warhol foi submetido levaram a passar demasiado tempo na companhia dos moribundos, e era essa vulnerabilidade excessiva que instigou o terror que acabaria por matá-lo, tendo mais tarde recusado procurar tratamento para uma infecção na vesícula biliar até já não haver nada a fazer. Hoje, nada senão esse fetiche dos factos sustenta as maiores ficções, que permitem a alguns estar muito confiantes dos seus esforços para esclarecer a época, e tantas vezes esquecem-se como a condenação deste tempo é a forma como leva «todos os seres a verem-se confundidos nos amontoados caóticos dos refugos, esmagando e sendo esmagados, sobrepondo-se e arrasando-se uns aos outros» (Marder). O jornalismo não pode dizer-nos muito pois não está em condições de ir até ao fundo, e o fundo são as nossas próprias vidas. Solanas tinha escrito um manifesto para a sua «associação para esquartejar os homens» (SCUM, Society for Cutting Up Men). Quando ela foi internada no hospital psiquiátrico, dois tipos que a conheciam encheram-se de dinheiro com uma edição do manifesto. Dez anos depois, quando foi ela a publicá-lo já ninguém estava interessado. Ficou célebre o arranque: «A vida nesta sociedade é, na melhor das hipóteses, tremendamente enfadonha, e nenhum dos seus aspectos é minimamente relevante para as mulheres. Às mulheres civilizadas, responsáveis, que procuram o estímulo, resta apenas a possibilidade de derrubar o governo, eliminar o sistema económico, implantar a automatização integral e aniquilar o sexo masculino. Temos agora possibilidades técnicas de nos reproduzirmos sem o contributo dos homens e de produzir apenas mulheres. Temos de começar imediatamente a pôr isto em prática.  Imediatamente. Conservar os homens não tem sequer o mais duvidoso sentido no plano biológico. Os homens são um desastre biológico: o cromossoma Y é um cromossoma X incompleto, ou seja, um gene com uma composição deficiente de cromossomas. Por outras palavras, o homem é uma mulher incompleta, um fracasso ambulante, falhado logo no estádio do gene. Ser homem é ser uma falha, é ser emocionalmente limitado. A masculinidade é uma deficiência, e os homens são aleijados emocionais. (…) contudo, os homens que são racionais não irão protestar e espernear, nem fazer um alarido patético, vão simplesmente deixar-se ficar sentados, calmamente, desfrutar o espectáculo e cavalgar as ondas até soçobrarem.» Naturalmente, este espectáculo não encherá a plateia do Tivoli. Neste episódio fomos levados pela Margarida Davim a pensar o que pode ser ainda um jornalismo capaz de definir por si mesmo um horizonte muito além dos enredos de conveniência, capaz de nos oferecer alguma coisa além desse chá para os submissos. Fomos postos a par do turbulento e incerto percurso em que está lançada essa balsa daqueles poucos que conseguiram resgatar a Visão, num dos episódios mais conturbados e que melhor ilustram os bastidores daquele que em tempos se tinha como o quarto poder e que hoje anda por aí lançado aos caídos, devendo o melhor de si à obstinação de uns quantos que talvez resista mais à base do desespero do que um resto de utopia requentada.

In celebration of our 10th anniversary, we are bringing you a remastered and re-edited edition of an episode we recorded in 2016 at the New Haven Museum with Alfred Marder, Judge Andrew Roraback and his father Charles Roraback. This compelling first-person interview with Alfred Marder shares his experiences as a defendant in New Haven's Smith trial. Mr. Marder died in 2023 at the age of 101. He was defended by civil rights attorney Catherine Roraback, an inductee in the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame. In 1954, 32-year-old Alfred Marder was arrested in New Haven along with several others under the Smith Act for allegedly working to overthrow the US government. After a lengthy trial, during which he was defended by the celebrated civil rights lawyer Catherine Roraback, he was acquitted. Hear Mr. Marder tell in his own words what he was fighting for and what it feels like when the full power of the state, federal, and local government is aimed at you. Laufenten, auch Indische Laufenten oder Flaschenenten genannt, sind gesellig und unkompliziert. Gezüchtet wurden sie als Legeenten, ihre Eier galten als Delikatesse und waren begehrt. Heute werden die Tiere oft angeschafft, um der Schneckenplage im Garten Herr zu werden. Wie der Name vermuten lässt, laufen Flaschenenten viel und schnell. Als Herdentiere tun sie das am liebsten in Gesellschaft. Es ist aber generell möglich, nur ein Paar im Garten zu halten. Aber in grösseren Gruppen fühlen sich die Tiere wesentlich wohler. Ganz oben auf der Speisekarte der Laufenten stehen Schnecken, vor allem Nacktschnecken und deren Eier. Sie sind darum die idealen Schneckenjäger für den heimischen Garten. Laufenten sind Freiheitsfanatiker. Vor Schutz vor Marder und Fuchs brauchen sie einen Stall. Ebenfalls zwingend ist ein Planschbecken im Garten. Pia Oechslin aus Lauernz im Kanton Schwyz züchtet seit bald 30 Jahren Laufenten. Ihre indischen Laufenten können sogar fliegen. Sie sind nur 1 bis höchstens 2 Kilogramm schwer und können gut abheben. Auch tauchen können sie sehr gut, wenn das Wasserangebot stimmt. Pia Oechslin vermietet ein Teil ihrer Enten auch als natürliche Schneckenjäger.

Der Eindruck täuscht nicht: Füchse, Dachse, Marder und Co tauchen tendenziell häufiger in urbanen Gebieten auf. Gerade das ist Beleg dafür, dass sie nicht zusätzlich gefüttert werden sollten. Ein Fuchs der im Wohnquartier am heiterhellen Tag über die Strasse trabt. Ein Igel, der im Laub vor der Gartenterrasse raschelt. Ein Milan, der über den Dächern der Stadt seine Kreise zieht. Wildtiere haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten ihren Lebensraum in urbane Gebiete ausgebreitet. Oder umgekehrt: Der Mensch dehnt sein Siedlungsgebiet immer weiter in die Natur aus. Begegnungen zwischen Mensch und Tier können eindrückliche Erlebnisse sein, auch in der Stadt. Respekt gegenüber der Wildnis ist dabei das Wichtigste. Nachhelfen kann der Mensch, indem er die nötigen Lebensräume schafft. «Nahrungsmittelhilfe» für wildlebende Tiere ist aber nicht nötig und oft schädlich.
