In this episode, we dive into the wild, wonderful world of Ron Bonk, an indie filmmaker and founder of SRS Cinema known for the cult horror-comedy House Shark. Ron shares his journey from studying accounting and criminal justice to becoming a self-taught director, driven by a passion for storytelling and a deep love for genre cinema. With no Hollywood backing, Ron used camcorders, community college equipment, and his own home as a film set to bring his visions to life. House Shark began as a joke about roof noises and turned into a full-blown production that he wrote, directed, and shot over a year. His philosophy? Use what you have, stay true to your weird ideas, and don't be afraid to break the rules. He talks about the challenges and joys of indie filmmaking, how crowdfunding works behind the scenes, and why authenticity matters more than perfection. As Ron puts it, “You tell people whatever they need to hear in order to keep shooting.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.
ARE YOU READY TO GET SLICIN & DICIN WITH SIR. STURDY HORROR FANS? IF YOU DON'T KNOW BY NOW I AM YOUR HOST SIR. STURDY. Welcome to another thrilling episode of "STURD - O - VISION," hosted by the one and only Sir. Sturdy. In episode 21, we're taking a bite out of the hilariously horrifying "House Shark," directed by Ron Bonk and featuring performances by Wes Reid, Trey Harrison, and Michael Merchant. Released in 2017, this offbeat horror comedy comes from the United States, specifically Syracuse, New York. "House Shark" turns a simple domestic environment into a battleground when a monstrous shark inexplicably begins terrorizing the occupants of a suburban home. This film blends comedy with classic horror elements to create a uniquely bizarre cinematic experience. Join Sir. Sturdy as he explores the film's wild premise, dissects the special effects, and dives into the performances that bring this aquatic terror to life. We'll discuss how "House Shark" fits into the wider genre of creature features and what makes it a cult favorite among horror enthusiasts.
House Shark, novelization by Brian G. Berry. Based on the screenplay by Ron Bonk.
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In yet another impromptu “bonus” episode, Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) to discuss a film that was finally unleashed upon the world by SRS Cinema: Space Monster Wangmagwi. As you can see, this one actually fits the season theme of The Monster Island World Tour. As mentioned in the Yongary episode, this was also released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, beating Yongary by a few months. But like many South Korean kaiju films, the story around this one exceeds its artistic merits. In its case, it was a “holy grail” of a lost film for kaiju fans; a thing of legend that few ever saw. But thanks to the dogged efforts of Ron Bonk, it's now readily available. Just prepare yourself for a “rantmaster” about Squirrel (not “Spider”), King of the Kennys! Today’s guest is Ron Bonk, best known as the owner of the New York-based underground production and distribution company SRS Cinema. Ron started out as a filmmaker in the shot-on-video world of the 1990’s, writing and directing low-budget genre films like CITY OF THE VAMPIRES and THE VICIOUS SWEET. He went on to direct several independent horror films like CLAY, MS. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST or the tongue-in-cheek HOUSE SHARK. With SRS Cinema, he’s produced and distributed numerous other films with splendid titles such as AMITYVILLE BIGFOOT, PUPPET SHARK or COCAINE CRABS FROM OUTER SPACE. This week on the Bad Taste Video Podcast we were joined by our best friend E.K. from the LASER GRAVES PODCAST to talk about one of the only death metal zombie films we could think of , "Death Metal Zombies" !! A movie that's like a cross between a Todd Sheets gore fest and a Ron Bonk vampire film, this one definitely brings the heat! So get your cassette deck hooked up and throw up your horns (or blood!) because this is Bad Taste Video!!
Like any good horror story, Ron keeps us guessing through the whole call!
This week on Saturday Night At The Movies, Daryl takes us back into the world of director Ron Bonk with the grindhouse inspired She Kills! Did it go well with Cayt and Bryan or did they give it a quick death? Tune in and find out!
It's our two-year anniversary, so Chris, Ray, Anthony, and Shawn hit Zoom and talk about everything they've been watching. In this episode we talk Ron Bonk's House Shark, Glen Danzig's Verotika, the 1935 predecessor to The Wolf Man, Stuart Walker's Werewolf of London, 976-Evil, and Chris and Shawn cover Narrative
Byrd and Matt are joined by Ron Bonk of home video label SRS Cinema to talk about their history and recent kaiju film releases. SRS has been an established video label for obscure independent genre films for years and just recently they have dipped their toes in the world of tokusatsu/kaiju with the Reigo/Raiga Trilogy, Attack of the Giant Teacher, and their upcoming release of Norman England's film the iDol. We talk to Ron about the origins of SRS, his work as a director, his love of horror, SRS' recent line of kaiju home video releases, and much more. Relax and join the conversation!
Segments from eight of the leading indie horror filmmakers including Tim Ritter, Brad Sykes, Donald Farmer, Todd Sheets, Chris Seaver, Ron Bonk, and Marcus Koch. Each director was challenged to go back to their roots, using analog equipment while tapping into their years of experience to tell a story that is fresh and edgy. Shot all over the USA, the result is a collection of tales that has something to horrify everyone.
