Was ist euer Kryptonit?2 Yongary OST by Jeon Jong-kun
In this episode Mike, Rich and Steve tackle five main releases - as usual, click the link to check out the trailers for each film! We kick off with POOLMAN (Signature Entertainment), starring, directed by and co-written by Chris Pine. Check out our review to find out if its worth a watch! Set on the US/Mexican border, DEADLAND (Lightbulb Film Distribution) follows a conflicted Border Patrol officer dealing with a mysterious dead body and the sudden appearance of his estranged father. THE LAST BREATH (Signature Entertainment) is the latest entry into the Shark Attack genre, as some old college friends become trapped inside the wreck of WW2 battleship, surrounded by sharks! Director James Bamford had already proved himself to be a decent DTV director with Airforce One Down. JADE (101 Films) doubles down on that, making him a director to look out for and serves up a new action star, Shaina West! Going straight to Netflix, AXEL F is exactly the nostalgia piece you'd expect. Check out our review to see whether we enjoyed it! Our Short Shot this week is THE BAKU - click the link to see the whole 30min short. Former Power Ranger Jonny Yong Bosch made the excellent short Ark Exitus a few years back, so we were eagerly anticipating his latest film! Finally, our DTV Throwback is REPTILIAN, aka Reptile 2001, aka Yongary. This is a Korean produced Kaiju, featuring a giant dinosaur resurrected by invading aliens. You have to dig hard, but it is available on Prime and other locations. Follow the Short Shots on X (formerly Twitter) where you will find hundreds of links to awesome short films! Don't forget to also check out our main show, the DTV DIGEST on X and FACEBOOK!

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what might be the most subversive and inspirational episode of MIFV yet, Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) joins Nate to discuss the infamous South Korean “kaiju” (notice the air quotes?) movie, Reptilian. This is, in fact, a “remake” of Yongary, Monster from the Deep, and it's often called “The Room of kaiju films.” But Elijah says it's more than that. He even goes so far as to say that if it wasn't for this movie, the world wouldn't have BTS or Squid Game. How? Listen to find out! Then stay for our Toku Topic, which is something Elijah has become an expert in: Korean kaiju cinema. Read Jimmy's Notes on this episode on the MIFV website! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In yet another impromptu “bonus” episode, Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna (Godzilla Novelization Project) to discuss a film that was finally unleashed upon the world by SRS Cinema: Space Monster Wangmagwi. As you can see, this one actually fits the season theme of The Monster Island World Tour. As mentioned in the Yongary episode, this was also released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, beating Yongary by a few months. But like many South Korean kaiju films, the story around this one exceeds its artistic merits. In its case, it was a “holy grail” of a lost film for kaiju fans; a thing of legend that few ever saw. But thanks to the dogged efforts of Ron Bonk, it's now readily available. Just prepare yourself for a “rantmaster” about Squirrel (not “Spider”), King of the Kennys! Nate and Jimmy fly Uber-Moguera to Panmunjom intent to recapture Yongary, but the Korean kaiju scores a couple lucky hits that disable the mecha's weapons system. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The South Korea leg of the Monster Island World Tour begins with arguably the first true Korean kaiju film: Yongary, Monster from the Deep. Author Neil Riebe, who might very well be this film's biggest fan, pays yet another visit to MIFV's mobile studio in Uber-Moguera to enlighten us with his copious research on the movie. Released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, it borrows some from Showa Godzilla films but way more from Showa Gamera—complete with a Korean Kenny! Ironically, only the dubbed version of the movie survives. It was once the most expensive film ever made in South Korea (until that record was broken by its remake) and is considered one of the country's most important films, but does it have the artistic merit to warrant such acclaim, or is it truly just MST3K fodder? Since the film had Japanese technicians from Toei and X Productions working on it, our Toku Topic is Japan-Korea relations. Byrd, Matt and Kevin discuss the South Korean obscurity, 1967's Space Monster Wangmagwi! Made (cheaply) to compete with the same year's Yongary, Wangmagwi has been a rarity up until 2023 when it got its first home video release (in any country!) via SRS Cinema in The United States. The film was thought lost until the Korean Film Archive started doing rare showings at festivals in the 2000s, which only made giant monster fans even more curious. The film tells of a space monster sent to destroy the population to make room for its alien overlords to populate the earth. Along the way we have interrupted weddings, someone falling in their own poop, and a homeless child getting stuck inside the monsters head in one of the most stream of consciousness monster movies we've ever seen. We expected weird, but nothing could have prepared us for the madness that is Wangmagwi. So how does the film hold up to the hype it has built in its decades in hiding? Listen and find out!

Join us as we dive into the history of South Korea's premiere giant monster, Yongary! We start by looking at the 1967 film Yongary, Monster from the Deep, which was an attempt at cashing in on the international success of the Godzilla and Gamera films. We talk about the long, complicated history of South Korean cinema and the country's complicated relationship with Japan, and how those factors influenced the film. We then get into the 1999/2001 reboot Yonggary (aka Reptilian), including its notoriously troubled production history, aborted sequels, and its um... interesting director, Shim Hyung-Rae. This is a wild one, folks. Relax and join the conversation!

Long before the South Korean film industry was putting out groundbreaking and critically beloved flicks like The Host and Parasite, they bestowed upon the world such epic daikaiju dumpster fires as Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) and War of the God Monsters (1985). The question isn't if the "The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and "The Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key enjoyed these two movies - it's if they survived them. Though Yongary's historical significance on the Korean film world is legitimate and undeniable, it provides little shelter from itchy monster dances, rectal bleeding, poorly hidden flame throwers, and thinly veiled metaphors regarding South Korea's geo-political views following the Korean War. It helps redefine the word "boring". But less than twenty years later, the world was treated to what can only be described as the cinematic interpretation of insanity in its purest form. Stock footage Tsuburaya monsters described as "dinosaurs". Bones that may or may not cause children to get sick. Uncomfortable emotional and physical abuse. A sociopathic pre-teen. And that baby scene...oh, that baby scene. Maybe there was a reason this film was lost. In addition to traversing the landscape of South Korean kaiju, Jake and Jay discuss some hot news items such as the approaching Godzilla Day and the two huge announcements - the official Toho short, Godzilla vs. Hedorah (in honor of Hedorah's 50th anniversary), and Super7's tease of their next reveal (the first wave of Ultimates, maybe?). The two hosts also compare pick-ups; Jake flexes his cute credentials with a "pumpkin" Negora and LitGodzi Space Godzilla cup...Jay battles back with a cool MaxToyCo Ultraman and a set of Eiji Tsuburaya 100th anniversary finger puppets from Yutaka.

Tony and Johanna take a trip to South Korea to see their attempt at rubber suited kaiju genre. Yongary Monster from the Deep is a weird movie where a giant sleepy monster comes to the surface to binge drink oil and dance...for real.
When doing a show about a niche genre, you gotta cover the good, the bad, and the ugly. One of those last two can be applied to this week's entry, Yongary. A South Korean movie with no real substance, it is not a standout of the genre. But that doesn't mean we didn't have a good show right?

Beware the jack-o-lanterns filled with feathers!
You ever wanted to watch a kaiju movie where the monster is desperately looking for a bathroom? Well, Yongary is the movie for you! One of South Korea's most successful movies ever made, Yongary was nearly a lost film and makes a perfect addition to the Grindbin.
