Send us a textRISKYSometimes you gotta say, “What the Fuck” to research, make your move. This week Season 14's penultimate 1x1 is co-host Ryan's pick: RISKY BUSINESS (1983). His reason: TGTPTU normally pairs filmographies of a single director or actor, and the writer-director on this film was so triggered by the experience of having his written, shot, and edited original ending replaced in the final cut that he never directed another film again… or at least not until his second film in 1990 (WTF, Ryan?). This film that would go on to become part of 1980s iconography by first-time director Paul Brickman, who had previously written the Michael Pressman-directed The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977) and the Jonathan Demme-directed Handle with Care (1977) and would later be one of three credited writers on Clint Eastwood's True Crime (alternately known as Speed Zoo) (1999), Risky Business as dark teen comedy and potential Reagon-era satire stars a number of early roles by actors who'd become comedy stars of the 1980s, including as the protagonist Joel's fellow yuppie North Shore friends and entrepreneuring high school seniors in their first film appearances Curtis Armstrong (also known as Booger in the 1980s) and Bronson Pinchot (aka Balki in the 80s). It costars Rebecca De Mornay (later in the 90s known for her roles as a terrible nanny and as Milady de Winter) as the business-savvy prostitute, and has an early movie appearance by Joey Pants (known in the late-90s for taking the blue pill, Ralphie Cifaretto in the 00s, and a Bad Boy 4 life) as Guido the pimp. Oh, and it's also the first time that actor born Thomas Mapother IV, better known later in life by his stage name Tom Cruise, stars in the leading role in a film (but not the first time he danced in his underwear or kissed a female person, if DVD commentary tracks are to be believed). Behind the camera, you have two cinematographers: Eastwood's 70s and early-80s collaborator Bruce Surtees as well as regular Hollywood comedy lenser Reynaldo Villalobos. Pod-favorite Tangerine Dream scores. And the film scores big with first watches by host Tom and guest host Jack and with the Gen X'ers Ken and Ryan. It's a wild ride, so mind your parking brake. In this episode Ryan explains the economic milieu behind the 80's yuppie culture to the two young hosts while drawing comparisons to American Psycho (2000); the two Zoomers discover how to shorten future episodes; and Broom Hilda's creator, whose life strangely overlaps with Ken's past and present, drops by studio. When you hear the word Ghoomer, you probably think of Deepika Padukone, resplendent in red, performing the traditional Rajasthani folk dance in Padmavat. But writer-director R. Balki's new film refers to a bowling delivery that the one-armed Anina specializes in. Listen to the full review by Anupama Chopra.

“You Can't Win 'Em All” (February 27, 1985) Sara is a one-season sitcom that first came to our attention via a gag on The Simpsons, the context being that it wasn't a show worth remembering. The Simpsons was wrong, however, and this Geena Davis vehicle does a lot of what we think '80s sitcoms don't do. Namely, it has an out gay character who is allowed to have a sex drive. He's also more than a set of stereotypical mannerisms but he still reads as gay. And Bronson Pinchot, who one year later would become a sitcom star as Balki on Perfect Strangers, does a great job bringing dimension to this character who should have been on TV for a lot longer. Greetings! We are combatting the dead zone that is the holidays with a bonus episode: the fourth of Weirdest Episode Ever, our new Patreon series looking at sitcoms that venture into sci-fi, horror and fantasy. If you like this, you can listen to three other episodes on Patreon, with another six to come in early 2023. They're available for people supporting us at the $5 level or higher. Here's the full list of episodes we have done/will be doing: The Cosby Show, "The Day the Spores Landed" (a.k.a. the male pregnancy episode) I Love Lucy, “Lucy Goes to Scotland" (a.k.a. Lucy gets fed to a dragon) Perfect Strangers, "Aliens" (a.k.a. Balki is an alien) The Facts of Life, "Seven Little Indians" (a.k.a. the Twilight Zone parody) A Family Matters, "Stevil" (a.k.a. Steve Urkel gets a murderous puppet doppelganger) Benson, "Death in a Funny Position" (a.k.a. serial killer cruise ship) Day By Day, "A Very Brady Episode" (a.k.a. a very strange venture into Brady Bunch land) Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place, "Two Guys a Girl and a Psycho Halloween" (a.k.a. Ryan Reynolds murders everyone) Punky Brewster, "The Perils of Punky" (a.k.a. the cave of horrors) The Cosby Show, "Cliff's Nightmare" (a.k.a. Cliff Huxtable vs. Muppets) Here are the details on this Facts of LIfe episode: “Seven Little Indians” (January 3, 1987) It would be ambitious for any sitcom, much less Facts of Life specifically, to attempt a weird episode that not only satirizes 1980s slasher movies but also murder mysteries and also The Twilight Zone. For all that being packed into one 22-minute format, this one actually works pretty well. Lisa Whelchel as Blair — big-haired, wild eyed and caked with makeup — makes for a striking visual that probably traumatized a few kids back in the day. The Facts of Life, previously: Blair Warner Is a Homophone Jo Polniaczek Is a Lesbian Hearththrob The logo for Weirdest Episode Ever + the rad art of psycho killer Blair Warner was designed by Ian O'Phelan. The theme music was composed by Nick Loiacano.
What better way to spend a Christmas Eve than in your apartment with your Greek cousin and reminiscing about the good days. Well, according to Larry Appleton, he'd rather be in Madison doing his God given job as the Christmas boy! This was such a fun episode of this 80's classic. We had a blast hanging with the modern day(?) odd couple in Larry and Balki. We hope you enjoy it too! Next week, Stephen is taking us to The Bob Newhart Show! In this episode, Dhruv and Aryan respectfully disagree about the merits of the latest Bollywood release that takes a stab at film critics and their volatile relationship with the filmmakers and thier films. Whereas the former takes issue with both the dramatization and the muddled messaging, Aryan finds value in some of Balki's filmmaking. He also defends the film's ultimate message that, for him, overrides some of the film's baffling contradictions that continue to prove annoyingly bothersome to Dhruv. Do listen to the full spoiler-filled episode to for an in-depth criticism/appreciation of the film before informing any "tortured" artist-cum-serial killer! If you type Sumanto Chattopadhyay's name in Google, he is described as an actor. And by his admission, he has a lot of people asking him about his blink and miss role in the popular movie - Piku. If you type 'English Nut' on Youtube, you'll see Sumanto in another avatar - simplifying phrases and words and English. You'll also catch him interviewing the likes of Shashi Tharoor and Ruskin Bond. The page has a loyal following (and over 140k followers). The best part? It's not clickbait. No trends are being chased, and no trending music is being used. It's genuine, honest content - an oasis of sense in a sea of mindlessness. And, finally, he also happens to have a day job as one of India's most well-recognized Creative Chiefs. He's been a part of the Ogilvy system for most of his career and today is Chairman of ad agency 82.5, Ogilvy's second agency. "I wanted to delay working as much as possible" Advertising is (or was) the confluence of misfits, and Sumanto is no different. That is precisely why he didn't stop with one Master's Degree but has two. During his MBA, he studied advertising and realized he could make a career in it. Another aside - he won a slogan competition in college and won a trip to France to be a part of Bastille Day. The trip never came to fruition on account of an Air Traffic Controllers Strike. "I knew it wasn't a passing fad" Advertising, like any industry, has seen a world of change over the last decade. Established agencies are competing with hotshot freelancers and influencers for attention and have been accused of not keeping up with the times. Sumanto says he started the English Nut because he loved the English language and it gave him a chance to understand a new medium better. Going by the popularity of his Youtube channel, it looks like he has found an alternative career, leave alone understanding a new medium. "If the right role comes along, I'll jump into it" Movies and advertising have always been a kind of unholy matrimony —many advertising professionals dream of breaking through the film industry at some point. Sumanto's peers like Prasoon Joshi, Balki, Rensil D'Silva and Juhi Chaturvedi have already made the leap. But Sumanto is a little different - instead of directing or writing scripts, he's been in front of the camera. He's honing his craft and has taken acting lessons in this regard (you can see the rub-off effect in the English Nut videos). He also let me in on another secret - he's now working on a book (I reckon he finally got tired of writing forwards for other people's books). With no more rungs to climb on the advertising ladder, he says he's looking to take his acting more seriously. And we'll all wait to see how this script unfolds. PS: I mispronounced Sumanto's name for most of the podcast but being the person he is, he corrected me only in the end. Sorry for that, Sumanto and thanks for sharing your journey with us. From Alaska to the CIA to being the funny drama guy... this week host Gray Jones interviews TV writer and Script Anatomy instructor Zach Ayers. Zach Ayers is a versatile TV writer who has found his stride as the funny guy in a drama room. Although before his TV career, Zach spent five years in a deadly-serious job at the Central Intelligence Agency. There he wrote and produced top-secret training films that taught US intelligence officers how to do their job well and survive doing it. He knows all the scary stuff. Which, in retrospect, Zach finds hilarious. Recently, Zach wrote and produced the bio-series "American Soul" (BET). Other credits include "Siren" (Freeform), "State of Affairs" (NBC) and "A.N.T. Farm" (Disney). He's also developed and sold several TV projects of his own across genres and formats. Zach's one of those oddball writers who actually loves to pitch. Zach's an alumnus of the ABC/Disney Writing Fellowship, Second City and Ithaca College. He grew up in rural, working-class Alaska, learning how to drive a forklift before he learned how to drive a car. But now he's 100% city kid, living with his family and his cat Balki on the eastside of Los Angeles. He still does his own yardwork. Pax, CT, Jaime Hood (www.shezcrafti.com and Cult Film Club), and William Bruce West (www.williambrucewest.com) review the sitcom greats (?) of the 90s. This episode asks and occasionally answers the hard hitting questions that everyone has wondered about. Why were Uncle Jesse and Uncle Joey still living with the Tanner family? How on earth did Saved By The Bell: The New Class last 10 seasons? Why is the finale to Seinfeld so damned important? What is French Stewart's tour de force performance? Which 90s sitcom character would we want to take the place of, date, or have for a neighbor? Not to be left out, our TV driven Nerd To-Dos include the Larry Sanders Show, Game of Thrones, Burn Notice, and The Walking Dead comic.
