This week on Collecting Weekly, we're breaking down the newly revealed Hot Toys DKR Superman, inspired by The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller. This version captures the older, government-aligned Man of Steel with his broader build, darker suit tones, and the unmistakable “S” shield design from Miller's iconic art style. We'll dive into the portrait sculpt, body proportions, suit texture, articulation, and whether Hot Toys successfully translated that exaggerated comic aesthetic into sixth scale form. How does he pair with DKR Batman? Is this a must-have for comic collectors, or does the stylized look limit shelf versatility? We're discussing pros, cons, pricing expectations, and display potential. #HotToys #Superman #DKR #DarkKnightReturns #FrankMiller #DCComics #SixthScale #SixthScaleFigures #ActionFigures #CollectingWeekly #CWLive #FigureCollectors #toynews Want to support our show? Steve & Max, Max & Steve...take you, the faithful listener, on a journey through sound. Specifically, the sounds of Steve telling you like it is when it came to Charlie Sheen freakin' out. There's also segments on how they create all those TV shows that seem to be all the same, but different. NCIS...we're looking at you. Same thing happens with movies, btw. We get a bit nostalgic as well with cons, the way they could make 2 movies about the same thing, but one would be the cheap rip off. We get into the history of the X-Men, how art imitates life, especially concerning current events, and the 40th anniversary of the Dark Knight Returns...plus more! Thanks for listening.

EPISODE 338 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Dark Knight Returns style! We go over the 2020(ish) mini series The Last Ronin. This takes place in a bleak future version of our world, where only one turtle is still alive, and he is fighting to avenge his fallen brothers and father.  It was a hit story and mostly very well received by fans! There is a very clear influence from Frank Miller's mid-1980s Batman story The Dark Knight Returns, but it's still very much a TMNT story, albeit one in the "mature, violent" category. Kevin Eastman collaborated on this, using an outline he and Peter Laird had done in 1987 as a starting point. Along with writer Tom Waltz and a cadre of brilliant arists (Esau and Isaac Escorza, Ben Bishop as well as Kevin Eastman), they craft a dark post-apocalyptic (not technically, but it feels like a fallen world) landscape. We visit most of the main cast of Turtles lore (in the comics) one way or the other.  Despite all the harshness and sad turns, it's very fun! In Loose Screws, we talk about Batman: Dark Patterns, which Kevin loves (and Will has not read).

BatChat With Matt & Will: A Batman Ranking Podcast

While in comics circles the most well known alternate future for Batman is The Dark Knight Returns, in the public consciousness, that title has to be held by Batman Beyond. Three seasons of young Terry McGinnis and crotchety old Bruce Wayne in the DCAU, plus appearances on Justice League Unlimited, left a mark for this particular iteration of Batman. This week, with Terry returning to comics in Batman/Static: Beyond, we do our first episode focused on stories featuring Terry McGinnis; two are animated series tie-ins, and one is an arc from the series that followed that continuity in a more traditional DC style. Commissioner of Fear (Batman Beyond V.2 # 13) Terry's Mom Dates a Splicer (Batman Beyond V.2 # 24) 10,000 Clowns (Batman Beyond Unlimited # 1-13) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

Frank Miller is regarded as one of the most influential and awarded creators. He began his career in comics in the late 1970s, first gaining notoriety as the artist, and later writer, of Daredevil for Marvel Comics. Next, came the science-fiction samurai drama Ronin, followed by the groundbreaking Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One with artist David Mazzuchelli. Following these seminal works, Miller fulfilled a lifelong dream by doing an all-out crime series, Sin City, which spawned two blockbuster films that he co-directed with Robert Rodriguez. Miller's multi-award-winning graphic novel 300 was also adapted into a highly successful film by Zack Snyder. His upcoming memoir, Push the Wall: My Life, Writing, Drawing, and the Art of Storytelling, is now available for pre-order.This episode is brought to you by: Eight Sleep Pod Cover 5 sleeping solution for dynamic cooling and heating: EightSleep.com/Tim (use code TIM to get $350 off your very own Pod 5 Ultra.)Shopify global commerce platform, providing tools to start, grow, market, and manage a retail business: https://shopify.com/tim (one-dollar-per-month trial period)AG1 all-in-one nutritional supplement: DrinkAG1.com/Tim (1-year supply of Vitamin D (and 5 free AG1 travel packs) with your first subscription purchase.)Timestamps:[00:00:00] Start.[00:02:14] Aristotle's definition of happiness: Devotion to excellence.[00:03:02] Tools of the trade: Blackwing pencils, India ink, liquid frisket.[00:04:45] Sin City‘s physical creation at “twice up” size.[00:08:06] The toothbrush spatter technique.[00:09:24] Channeling impatience, anger, and violence into dramatic creative work.[00:10:33] What Jack Kirby knew about making comics competitive with cinema's spectacle.[00:11:56] Will Eisner and The Spirit‘s influence on the US market where writer-artist duality is rare.[00:13:33] How Jack Kirby blasted apart the panel grid (and a young Frank's mind).[00:15:49] Push the wall and defy the code.[00:19:54] The ruthless mentorship of Neal Adams.[00:24:57] The genesis of the Elektra amd Daredevil “soap opera.”[00:27:56] Story structure: Start late, end early.[00:29:10] Trusting the muse over rigid methodology.[00:31:15] European invasion: Moebius and Forbidden Planet.[00:32:52] Japanese influence: Lone Wolf and Cub‘s impact.[00:34:30] Cultural differences in depicting violence and motion.[00:36:38] Ronin: Shameless imitation and rebirth.[00:37:28] How does Frank know if something is working (or not working)?[00:39:27] The critical reception of Ronin as a “broken nose.”[00:42:37] The ruthless structure of The Dark Knight Returns.[00:43:40] Mutual elevation with “smartest fan” Alan Moore.[00:48:26] Robert Rodriguez: Angel of goodwill and generosity.[00:49:28] Sin City film: Co-directing and the Director's Guild sacrifice.[00:50:31] Working as a “two-headed beast” with Rodriguez.[00:55:27] Favorite films.[00:58:19] Books and ancient history inspiring 300.[00:59:00] Hollywood lessons: The importance of working with the right people.[01:01:13] The partnership and guidance of Silenn Thomas.[01:02:01] The clarity and creative rejuvenation of getting sober from alcohol.[01:04:48] Advice for aspiring comic artists: Story, story, story.[01:06:20] Learning to draw: Bridgman and Loomis books.[01:08:07] Perspective as a mathematical trick and lie.[01:11:00] Dick Giordano's advice: Lay in blacks first.[01:13:52] Sin City workflow innovation: Batch processing stages.[01:15:48] Dark Horse Comics and creative freedom.[01:17:29] Economy of line work and elegant minimalism.[01:20:46] On collaborating with Bill Sienkiewicz on Elektra.[01:25:20] Billboard wisdom: “Ask every question,” and “Why?”[01:27:08] Challenging pathological conformity.[01:27:39] Parting thoughts and where to find Frank's work.*For show notes and past guests on The Tim Ferriss Show, please visit tim.blog/podcast.For deals from sponsors of The Tim Ferriss Show, please visit tim.blog/podcast-sponsorsSign up for Tim's email newsletter (5-Bullet Friday) at tim.blog/friday.For transcripts of episodes, go to tim.blog/transcripts.Discover Tim's books: tim.blog/books.Follow Tim:Twitter: twitter.com/tferriss Instagram: instagram.com/timferrissYouTube: youtube.com/timferrissFacebook: facebook.com/timferriss LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/timferrissSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this episode of Geek Freaks, Frank and Squeaks sit down with middle school teacher Mark Daumier, who's using comic books to revolutionize how kids engage with reading. Mark shares how he turned his love of comics into a classroom staple, building a library of over 14,000 comics and using them to teach visual literacy, historical events, and critical thinking. Plus, the Geek Freaks crew breaks down everything from the new King of the Hill revival and Vision series casting to the cancellation of EA's Black Panther game and the Switch 2 release. If you're a fan of comics, games, or how pop culture shapes education, this one's for you. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00:00 Introduction and Patreon shoutouts 00:00:45 Guest Preview: Mark Daumier's comic-based classroom 00:02:09 Comfort Games: Mass Effect, Space Marine, and Animal Crossing 00:04:01 King of the Hill revival and modern updates to the cast 00:08:24 Marvel Vision Series: Jocasta's debut and Ultron's return 00:12:12 EA cancels Black Panther game, industry layoffs discussed 00:20:34 Pokemon Legends Z-A and Switch 2 impressions 00:26:35 Full breakdown of the Switch 2's hardware, internet issues, and accessory talk 00:31:09 Upcoming Switch 2 games and gimmicky features 00:33:00 Assassin's Creed Shadows and Cyberpunk on Switch 00:33:16 Interview: Mark Daumier on comic books in the classroom 00:35:50 Comic book reading comprehension and visual learning 00:38:01 Mark's early comic fandom and Spider-Man subscription 00:43:44 Teaching narrative structures and novel writing with comics 00:47:12 Star Wars and pop culture in student assignments 00:50:03 Comic fandoms, MCU popularity, and Thunderbolts in class 00:59:19 Advice for teachers: meeting students where they are 01:01:10 Watchlist: Ironheart, The Bear, Squid Game Season 3 01:02:33 Movie Talk: Ballerina, How to Train Your Dragon, 28 Years Later 01:04:22 Pixar's Leo and the debate around Disney originals 01:06:13 F1 with Brad Pitt and Megan 2.0 reactions 01:07:42 Recommendations of the Week: Warhammer Darktide and Marvel's Darth Vader (2020) Key Takeaways: Comics help bridge the gap for students who struggle with traditional reading. Mark Daumier uses over 14,000 comics in his curriculum, including creative assignments like comic-style reports. Comics like Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns are powerful but carefully used depending on student maturity. Star Wars, Captain America, and Spider-Man continue to resonate with students. The Vision series and Jocasta casting hint at deeper Marvel storytelling on the horizon. EA's canceled Black Panther game reflects broader industry issues. The Switch 2 launches with improvements but raises concerns about internet requirements. Original stories from Disney and Pixar are in demand more than retellings. Memorable Quotes: “If you read 20–25 comic books, that's the same as reading a novel.” — Mark Daumier “Comics help kids visualize what they're reading. That unlocks everything else.” — Mark Daumier “I was like, can I teach in your class now?” — Frank Lourence “Nintendo throws stuff at the wall to see what sticks. Sometimes they reinvent the industry.” — Squeaks Call to Action: Love what you heard? Subscribe to Geek Freaks on your favorite podcast platform and leave us a review. In 2005, filmmaker Christopher Nolan was about to become mainstream with the first movie in his superhero trilogy. Meanwhile, a group of developers in Derby were working on a video game tie-in for said movie that wouldn't turn out to be quite as popular. We're taking a look at an action adventure game that was neither a precursor to a game based on The Dark Knight, nor The Dark Knight Returns. We're talking Batman Begins. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we chat a little bit about trailers that feature Batman smiling, Trailer Voice Man, and Phoenix International. We also look at how important it was for this to be an interactive version of the movie in almost every way, as well as a cavalcade of celebs: a disinterested Morgan Freeman, a bloodthirsty Cillian Murphy, anbemused Michael Caine, and a Christian Bale that thinks all this video game stuff is a complete waste of time. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: the first glimpses of many things that would become staples in the Arkham games; instilling fear in your enemies by interacting with very specific parts of the environment; goons dropping their guns when they're scared; the optic cable from Splinter Cell; an exceptionally violent inverted takedown; familiar punching and kicking, as performed by a more acrobatic, yet less fluid Batman; the weird context-sensitive special move thing; NO BATARANG BUSINESS; climbing things with 70% arm and 30% leg; bonus Game Boy Advance opinions; a lack of yellow paint; training in the Himalayas; driving the tumbler around Gotham like it's a Burnout game; dingy rooms illuminated by beams of light coming through blinds; restrictions vs limitations; being rewarded(?) with clips from the film in between levels; odd differences in the narrative; Gary Oldman's absence; and a lockpicking minigame that's the same every single time. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Batman Begins is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Deus Ex on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

Dive deep into the shadows of Gotham as Geek History Lesson embarks on a gripping journey through Batman's Dark Age—spanning from 1985 to 2000. This era redefined the Caped Crusader, courtesy of visionary creators like Frank Miller, whose "The Dark Knight Returns" brought a gritty realism to Bruce Wayne's world. Alongside Alan Moore's "The Killing Joke," which delved into the twisted psyche of the Joker, and Grant Morrison's innovative narratives in "Arkham Asylum," these stories sculpted a darker, more complex Batman. This period ushered in a renaissance of the Dark Knight, transforming him into a symbol of vigilante justice steeped in moral ambiguity, setting the stage for Batman's evolution for years to come. In 2024, we published 58 Comic Book Couples Counseling episodes. However, that was not the total Comic Book Couples Counseling experience. Over on our Patreon, we published an additional 61 episodes, including our Married to Singlesseries, where we talk with comic book creators about their favorite single issues. In 2025, we'll make these a regular thing, starting with Tyler Crook this week, diving deep into his cherished Mage: The Hero Discovered #6. Crook has appeared on the podcast multiple times, mostly exploring his exceptional Dark Horse Comics series, The Lonesome Hunters (links to those episodes below). He's a passionate, enthusiastic champion of this medium, and that devotion began at a very young age thanks to books like Mage: The Hero Discovered. We enjoyed this conversation with Crook about this comic so much that we've decided to drop it into the main podcast feed to entice some of you over to the CBCC Patreon, which we consider one of the most welcoming, loving comic book communities on the internet. Published by Comico in March of 1985, Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 landed just as the industry shifted. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 arrived the year before, while Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns were just on the horizon. Comics were ready to celebrate themselves as thematically rich, adult entertainment. NOT. KIDS. STUFF. Mage: The Hero Discovered #6 was written and illustrated by Matt Wagner and features additional inks by Sam Kieth. The series follows Kevin Matchstick, who is basically a stand-in for Wagner, as he tumbles into a fantasy adventure where each obstacle represents some issue or situation from his own life. Be warned, our conversation with Tyler Crook spoils the entirety of the sixth issue, as well as some critical plot points from the rest of the series. Although, knowledge of those plot points won't ruin your overall reading experience if you decide to read after you've listened to the episode. We make the Comic Book Couples Counseling Patreon as cheap as we can. Our "Smitten Kitten" level costs only a dollar and gives you access to all the Patreon episodes. Our "Dearly Beloved" tier is $5, which grants you access to our Slack community. For the month of January, we're donating all proceeds made by our Patron to BINC (The Book Industry Charitable Foundation). It's the 50th regular episode of the podcast, and to celebrate, we're finally doing a deep dive on a comic that helped ushered in the Iron Age and still stands as one of its most enduring accomplishments: Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight (better known in collected form as The Dark Knight Returns), aided and abetted by inker Klaus Janson, colorist Lynn Varley, and letterer John Costanza. But after 39 years of attention from the comics industry and mainstream media alike, is there anything left to say about arguably the most celebrated Batman comic ever published? Rather than try to reduce this landmark comic to a tidy message or thesis about “what it means,” we embrace the glorious messiness of DKR. By examining all the complexities and contradictions of the series, we try to foster an honest and true appreciation of this landmark work. Thanks to everyone who's listened to us over the past two years and 50 episodes. There's a lot more great stuff to come. Then, in 1976's The Joker #7, a scientific accident gifts the Joker with Lex Luthor's intellect, and Luthor with the Joker's madness! Last but not least, we switch gears with 1978's “The Laughing Fish” and “Sign of the Joker,” from Detective Comics #475-476, featuring one of the Ace of Knaves' most bizarre schemes yet!
